2023.03.30 15:49 dontwantacaraway I love my 98 k1500, but I have to drive back to the office and can no longer work 100% remotely. What is the best economy car/hybrid for the job? (2 hour round trip bumper-bumper traffic)

Hello everyone!
So recently my remote job has decided to start making me come into the office two days a week for “culture” or something like that. The trip is roughly 1 hour each way with traffic and really draining bumper to bumper traffic (why the commute takes so long despite being only like 40 miles). Despite me loving my grandpa’s old truck that I got for free in high school it only gets 8-9mpg in bumper to bumper traffic. This is costing me over +100$ a week in gas just commuting. Plus as reliable as she is I don’t really feel comfortable taking her on any long personal trips as the cruise control went out a while ago.
I’m going to keep the truck as insurance/tag is only like 600$ a year, but I want the most reliable econobox hybrid/car I can buy with my budget outlined below. Plus I may take a number of 4-6 hour road trips to see friends so something comfy to ride it would be a plus. I also plan on driving whatever I get for at least 200-300k miles (my truck has 238k atm with ~110k being mine)
Personal finance stuff:
Income: 95k a year roughly 55k a year after deductions/retirement/taxes biweekly take-home of 2.1k (26 paychecks a year + bonus of 10-20% if company does good)
Expenses: Rent + all utilities = 1400 Food = 700$ a month (I’m 6’-2” and like to eat healthy)
Budget: 5-15k down + 25k financing @ 4% for 4 years (company credit union)
Any dealership/buying advice would also be greatly appreciated. I would like to buy something new if possible as I know I would baby whatever I get for the long haul. Also, I have a girlfriend and no kids so I don’t want a suv and prefer a sedan. I don’t want to move closer to the office as I love where I live and moving into the city downtown would almost triple my rent
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

2023.03.30 15:49 BillReel Joseph Smith's First Vision in Context: A Comparative Analysis

Joseph Smith's First Vision in Context: A Comparative Analysis
This post is connected the the episode we did on Mormonism Live https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpl11qiv-28
A.) Joseph Smith’s First Vision did not occur in a vacuum
  1. Burned Over District
  2. Second Great Awakening
    1. visions of divine beings
    2. Mysticism
    3. speaking in tongues
    4. falling down
    5. bodily shaking
    6. visions
    7. A number of these new religious groups, now called “restorationists,” similarly believed that their churches were the restored church of Jesus Christ.
B.) Contemporary First Visions
  1. Elias Smith
    1. (17 June 1769 – 29 June 1846) was a preacher, physician, journalist and clergyman. Smith, along with the preacher Abner Jones, founded a group of Christian Churches in New England that eventually merged with other like-minded, regional groups to become the denomination known as the Christian Connexion. Smith founded The Herald of Gospel Liberty in 1808. Smith spent his later years as a vigorous proponent and practitioner of the Thomsonian system of herbal medicine, though he and Thomson had a public dispute and falling out in 1827
    2. His Book Image “went into the woods one morning after a stick of timber … as I walked along a large log that lay above the snow, my foot slipped and I fell partly under the log … While in this situation, a light appeared to shine from heaven, not only into my head, but into my heart. This was something very strange to me, and what I had never experienced before. My mind seemed to rise in that light to the throne of God and the Lamb, and while thus gloriously led, what appeared to my understanding was expressed in Rev. xiv. 1. “And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.” The Lamb once slain appeared to my understanding, and while viewing him, I felt such love to him as I never felt to any thing earthly. My mind was calm and at peace with God through the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world. The view of the Lamb on mount Sion gave me joy unspeakable and full of glory. It is not possible for me to tell how long I remained in that situation, as every thing earthly was gone from me for some time. After admiring the glory of the Lamb for some time, I began to think of the situation my body was in, and rose up to return home. Looking around me, every object was changed, and a bright glory appeared on every thing around me. All things praised God with me.”

  1. Billy Hibbard
    1. “I thought how happy must Jesus Christ have been when he suffered for sinners. It would yield some satisfaction to me, if my misery can be a cause of happiness to others; but when I came to the place of prayer, had kneeled down, and closed my eyes, with my hands uplifted toward the heavens, I saw Jesus Christ at the right hand of God looking down upon me, and God the Father looking upon him. The look of Jesus on me removed the burden of my sins, while he spoke these words, “Be faithful until death and this shall be thy place of rest.” I never had seen Jesus Christ before, nor heard his voice, nor ever had a sense of his intercession at the right hand of God for me till now.”
    2. 3rd Hibbard slide Later recounting a dream “saw heaven open, and Jesus at the right hand of God, and the Heavenly hosts surrounding the throne, adoring the Father and the Son in the most sublime strains”
    3. “And we beheld the glory of the Son, on the right hand of the Father … And saw the holy angels, and them who are sanctified before his throne, worshiping God, and the Lamb, who worship him forever and ever”

  1. NORRIS STEARNS 1789-1845
    1. “At length, as I lay apparently upon the brink of eternal woe, seeing nothing but death before me, suddenly there came a sweet flow of the love of God to my soul, which gradually increased. At the same time, there appeared a small gleam of light in the room, above the brightness of the sun, then at his meridian, which grew brighter and brighter: As this light and love increased, my sins began to separate, and the Mountain [of sin] removed towards the east. At length, being in an ecstasy of joy, I turned to the other side of the bed, (whether in the body or out I cannot tell, God knoweth) there "I saw two spirits, which I knew at the first sight. But if I had the tongue of an Angel I could not describe their glory, for they brought the joys of heaven with them. One was God, my Maker, almost in bodily shape like a man. His face was, as it were a flame of Fire, and his body, as it had been a Pillar and a cloud. In looking steadfastly to discern features, I could see none, but a small glimpse would appear in some other place. Below him stood Jesus Christ my Redeemer, in perfect shape like a man---His face was not ablaze, but had the countenance of fire, being bright and shining. His Father's will appeared to be his! All was condescension, peace, and love." I was filled with the sacred flame, and the glory of God; I thought one spark more in my soul would have destroyed this mortal frame!! I was happy!!! happy!!! happy!!! I wanted ten thousand tongues to sing their sweet, their glorious praise!! It was a heaven here below for the space of half an hour!! But how infinitely short must I come of describing their glory, for want of language to paint my feelings! For the joys of Heaven so far surpass all bounds of description, or human conception, that christians here below come infinitely short of forming a competent idea of the joys that await the righteous: ‘Eye hath not seen, Ear hath not heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man to conceive of those good things, the Father hath prepared for them that love him.'”
    2. Norris Stearns, experienced the vision and published it in 1815, in Greenfield, Massachusetts---not far from where the Joseph Smith Senior family lived in Vermont. The most intriguing aspect of Stearns' "vision," is how he described the Father and the Son as two separate, distinct, human-like personages. LDS leaders have insisted separate beings in the godhead was one of the "truths" that had been lost from the world until Joseph Smith's First Vision. It was a major point in the late apostle Hugh B. Brown's 1950's sermon "Profile of a Prophet." Joseph could have been inspired by Stearns, or some other contemporary source. BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE

  1. John Samuel Thompson ?-?
    1. a teacher at the Palmyra Academy, declared in 1825, Jesus appeared “in a glare of brightness exceeding tenfold the brilliancy of the meridian [noonday] sun.” The Lord told him, “I commission you to go and tell mankind that I am come; and bid every man to shout victory.”

  1. Asa Wild 1823 - ?
    1. Asa Wild was almost a dozen years older than Joseph Smith, and it is probable the two never met. Like Joseph, Wild was born in Vermont—in 1794 at West Fairlee, about twenty miles northeast of Joseph’s birthplace of Sharon. Most of what we know about Asa Wild comes from a pamphlet he published in 1824, entitled A Short Sketch of the Religious Experience and Spiritual Travels of Asa Wild, of Amsterdam, N. Y. - BYU Article “The “Prognostication” of Asa Wild”
    2. It seemed as if my mind…was struck motionless, as well as into nothing, before the awful and glorious majesty of the Great Jehovah. He then spake…He also told me, that every denomination of professing christians had become extremely corrupt....
  2. Solomon Chamberlain (Meridian Magazine Quoting Richard Bushman)
    1. “Dissatisfied with the religions he had tried, Chamberlin prayed for further guidance, and in 1816, according to his account, "the Lord revealed to me in a vision of the night an angel," whom Chamberlin asked about the right way. The angel told him that the churches were corrupt and that God would soon raise up an apostolic church. Chamberlin printed up an account of his visions and was still distributing them and looking for the apostolic church when he stopped in Palmyra.”

  1. Charles Grandison Finney (First coins term burned over district)
    1. Major parallels between Smith and Finney
    2. Visited palmyra in 1831 (hosea stout) Parrallels 1.) Finney felt despair over the eternal state of his soul 2.) Finney chose and went into a "grove of woods" to pour out his soul in solitude 3.) Upon making his petition Finney found that he could not pray. When he attempted to pray he became "dumb," having "nothing to say to God." Rustling of leaves nearby led him to believe that other individuals were in his presence. Ultimately that thought led him to such a sense of conviction of personal wickedness that it took possession of him. Charles attempted to pray several times without success, leading him to the verge of despair. He recollected that "a great sinking and discouragement came over me at this point, and I felt almost too weak to stand upon my knees." 4.) Finney saw a light and Jesus Christ appeared to him 5.) Charles Finney also endured persecution for sharing his experience

  1. Francis Gladden Bishop (We Covered in prior episode)
In “Mormonism LIVE: 110: Francis Gladden Bishop - Succession Crisis, Orgies, & Sacred Relics” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EL31hPn6m0&t ) we discussed his early spiritual experiences that led to him believing his mothers prophecies that he was the “Flying Roll” and even included him claiming he was ordained by Nephi and two other Nephite Disciple Heavenly Messengers who came in the identity of Peter James and John.
  1. Alexander Campbell described the experiences he was hearing others have
    1. Enthusiasm flourishes.... This man was regenerated when asleep, by a vision of the night. That man heard a voice in the woods, saying, 'Thy sins be forgiven thee.' A third saw his Savior descending to the tops of the trees at noon day" (The Christian Baptist, Vol. 1, pp.148-49).

  1. James Brewster 1826–1909
    1. In 1836, at the age of 10, Brewster began to claim that he had been visited by the Angel Moroni, the same angel that Joseph Smith claimed had led him to the golden plates. In November 1837, due to his persistent claims of being a prophet, Brewster was disfellowshipped from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at age 11. (Joseph has had enough of kids claiming visions)

MY FAVORITE
  1. James G Marsh 1832-1833
    1. His obituary mentions him seeing God the father and Christ both at 9 years old “It seems that the Lord had respect unto this lover of righteousness, for when he was but about nine years of age, he had a remarkable vision, in which he talked with the Father and many of the ancient prophets face to face, and beheld the Son of God coming in his glory.
https://preview.redd.it/k5ywiic3svqa1.png?width=1744&format=png&auto=webp&s=062a99bad33c6352ebb4c65c32bbdc68762a385e

  1. Joseph only days or weeks later dictates his 1838 account where he too claims to have seen God the Father and his son. He was editor and Thomas Marsh publisher of the Elder’s Journal where the obituary appeared.
  2. The Milk Strippings event with Marsh’s father Thomas Marsh the apostle occurred in 1838 as well. Remember Smith was secretly married to Lucinda Pendleton Morgan Harris who was in the dispute with Marsh’s wife.
C.) Conclusion
  1. Richard Bushman - Joseph’s Vision fits right in with other contemporary visions because it looks like all the other visions everyone in upstate NEW YORK is having.

2023.03.30 15:48 kAnnieS0720 What can I do to make my old and sick dwarf more comfortable?

So my russian dwarf has recently been diagnosed with a growth/tumor on her liver.
She turned two years old in january and since she doesn't seem to be in pain or discomfort (she eats, drinks and interacts with me normally) the doc said to just let her live out the rest of her life in peace, instead of undergoing any stressful procedures.
I've been giving her lots of treats and check on ther daily, I also made her enclosure "Senior-friendly". Is there anything else i can do to make her limited time more comfortable?
Also: Since her diagnosis I only do spot-cleaning because I don't want to stress her out, but since I don't now how long she has left (best case is a couple months) I'm afraid of her enclosure getting too dirty, so any advice on how to keep it clean without disturbing her too much would be really appreciated.

2023.03.30 15:47 DNY88 BenQ TH685p or TK700STi for casual gaming and media consumption in my home office/home gym room?

So I have my old LG B7 OLED with 55 inches hooked on my wall in my small work and gym room. As the TV takes a lot of space, I’d like to get rid of it and go for a Beamer instead, so that I can use the wall and space for bench presses etc. I don’t use the tv very much, maybe 2-3 hours a week, sometimes more when the living room is occupied. I wouldn’t use a big size for the projections. 60 inches tops, as the wall isn’t that big. Is the FULL HD TH 685p perfectly fine for my use case or should I go the few hundred extra bucks and get the TK700STI as a more future proof 4K Device ? I would only hook up my second PS5 to it.

2023.03.30 15:47 StepwiseUndrape574 Rapper 50 Cent Teases Possible Role In Upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 Game

Just in case you aren't aware dear reader, Grand Theft Auto is kind of a cultural phenomenon. The fifth game, particularly its internet component (known simply as "GTA Online"), is by some measures the most successful video game of all time. Naturally, anticipation for GTA 6 is running high, and any tiny tidbit of information is tantalizing to the fans who have been waiting since 2013 for an taste of the new game.
50cent gta6 vice city tweet
Well, the latest teaser comes from a somewhat-unlikely but perhaps unsurprising source: Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson. The longtime rapper hasn't published that much music recently, but that's probably because he's been focused on building his media empire, instead: for more than a decade he's been lending his name, funds, and creative talent to a multitude of films and TV shows. Among those was the show "Power" which ran from 2014 to 2020, and was well-regarded by fans.
Apparently, what "Fifty" is working on now is "even bigger than Power," at least according to a recent tweet by him. What's that have to do with Grand Theft Auto? Along with the message, he tweeted the Vice City logo. Vice City is all-but-confirmed to be the locale of the next Grand Theft Auto game, which means that Jackson is likely going to play a role of some kind—possibly a major role—in Grand Theft Auto 6.
vice city logo image The Vice City logo image tweeted by 50 Cent.
If so, then Jackson will join the grand tradition of celebrity voice actors in "GTA" games. It's not hard to imagine a role for the 47-year-old performer within the world of Grand Theft Auto. His pseudonym was inspired by an infamous criminal from the 1980s, and many of his raps are about his experiences on the streets.
Grand Theft Auto 6 has no release date; Rockstar has barely even confirmed that the game exists. A major leak last year revealed surprisingly little aside from confirmation that the game will have multiple protagonists including a Latin woman named Lucia. Recent leaks include that the game will apparently feature bleeding-edge tech including "ahead of its time" water simulation—a perfect fit given the game's tropical Vice City setting.

2023.03.30 15:46 butteredkernels Win10/11 OOBE Lockup, Ubuntu LiveUSB Lockup

Hello All,
Machine: ASUS ROG Strix G17 G713QR.330
CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HX
GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU
SSD: Intel SSDPEKNU010TZ
RAM: 32GB Samsung 1600Mhz DDR4-3200
OS: Windows 10 / 11
Warranty: Expired 2/10/23 (of course...)
Peripherals: none
Background:
My wife and I have identical laptops. I recently upgraded mine to a new Intel AX210 WiFi card, and yesterday decided to do the same for hers. Her laptop was running Windows 10 and was giving her some stuttering behavior the other day. I run Windows 11 on mine and since there's been a lot of newer ASUS image/firmware updates for it I decided to upgrade her to 11 as well. I backed up all her data, swapped the WiFi card out, made sure everything was working as-is, and then wanted to give it the ol' nuke and pave to Windows 11.

Issue:
Past 2 days:
Windows 10, Windows 11, and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (live USB) all lock up randomly and I can't complete an install.

Windows 11 Install - installation completes, OOBE loads, and it will lock up randomly anywhere between connecting to WiFi network to signing into Microsoft account

Windows 10 Install - installation completes, OOBE loads, and it'll lock up between connecting to WiFi network to right after creating a local account

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS LiveUSB - locked up after about 6 minutes of idling in the "Try Ubuntu" load

I considered perhaps it was the SSD, so we overnighted a new Samsung 970 EVO from Amazon, the issue persists. I even swapped the old WiFi card back in thinking maybe it was just a problematic Intel WiFi card causing the issue.
It does not lock up in BIOS (I let it sit with something on an arrow key for 30min so it was changing menus constantly - no lockups)
It does not appear to lock up in PE environments, namely SystemRescueCD Live.
EDIT: It does not appear to be a heat issue either, i compared our laptops on startup and they seem to be behaving the same way in that regard. I have considered tearing it all the way down and reapplying thermal paste, but that's a task I'd rather not get into if I can help it.
I've also reseated the RAM, even swapped the slots they're installed in.
----
Today:
I ran memtest86 overnight for 8hrs, 5 passes, no issues.I managed to get Windows 10 installed w/o much fuss this morning with no wifi card in it and ran mdsched.exe and it passed
I was going to run an in-os diag with Si-Sandra or Cinebench, but it locked up almost immediately.
I've been in I.T. since 2006 and I'm running out of ideas.
Thanks for reading, hopefully someone here has some additional thoughts.

Now, who is the genius (kidding… kinda) behind this whole course?
Let me introduce myself, my name is Iman. At the age of Seventeen, I dropped out of high school to commit to the world of online marketing. Within my first year I had made over $300,000+, I had traveled the world working from my computer, I had constructed my dream lifestyle and this was all done through the power of what I teach in Six Figure SMMA. I run my own digital marketing agency based out here in London, although we have clients out in Amsterdam and St. Tropez.
I have my personal brand which is another six figure business…
Then I have a few other smaller income streams here and there. I love the internet! Haha
Damn… I worked hard for this life. I worked hard to create the sort of income where I can take care of my family and not even check the price…
I guess that’s why I’m so passionate about what I teach. It’s because it changed my life in unexplainable ways. I don’t think I could ever go back to my old life after living like this.

2023.03.30 15:45 Creative_Strawberry6 Appalachian Horror

This story takes place in the early 1990s:
I was 18 years old and starting my new life as a college student. It was an exciting time to be away from home for the first time, and my best friend and I both committed to West Virginia University... we were ready to party like no tomorrow together. We weren't the brightest and were just going to college because that's what was expected of us, so WVU was the perfect fit. We chose to be in a quad room, meaning we would have two other roommates. Both were random, and this was a time before cell phones, so we wouldn't meet them until move-in day. Being from NJ, this was the furthest from home I would be, and the change from an NYC suburb to the middle of nowhere West Virginia would be shocking.
Moving day came, and my friend and I set up our room. Our first roommate joined us that day, and we all clicked really well. He was from a really small town in Western Virginia, and although we had almost completely different lives, this was someone you could tell would be a great friend. The next day, our other roommate came, and we all got to know each other. The story revolves around the first roommate from Virginia, so I'm going to focus on him.
Throughout the semester, my best friend, the roommate, and I became a trio and would go out together all the time, and we all even shared the same friends. We really spent all our free time with each other. Things remained amazing for both semesters of our first year, and we really wanted to keep in touch over the summer break. My home friend and I were so intrigued by the third roommate's stories of his hometown that we all agreed to visit him for a week over the summer and live with his family.
When that time came, me and my friend hopped into my car and drove the roughly 12-hour trip to his house. About an hour after passing through the suburbs of DC, we realized how remote Western Virginia was. When we would stop for gas or to use the bathroom in these small towns, we felt like we were in an old western movie. I have never seen so few people and so little urbanization; it was really eye-opening. We arrived at his house by dinner time, and when I tell you this town was small, I mean it. Each house was at least half a mile or more apart, and it took a 25-minute drive from his house to get to the center of town, where all the stores and restaurants were. Honestly, although it was an extreme change from what I was used to, I pictured this trip being a relaxing one, removing me from the hustle of the east coast.
Three days into our six-day stay, our friend wanted to bring us hiking through the mountains. I was really excited as I have been loving the outdoors here and really wanted to embrace nature. We started our hike at about 9 am, planning to eat our packed lunches around 11 and return to his house by 5 in time to eat dinner at home and before it started to get dark. Midway through the hike, a little after we ate lunch, I spotted a no-trespassing sign in the middle of what seemed to be nowhere. I asked my friend about it, and he told us there was a house in there that everyone knew to keep away from. He told us that where we were hiking was designated as a park and, therefore, no one could live there, but this family had been here for so long that after refusing to move numerous times, the state just gave up.
This was so intriguing to me, and I really wanted to see the house. My friend kept telling us it was dangerous because it was someone's property, and they could shoot us if they saw us. The way he was telling us this thought felt a little insincere as if he didn't really think that was the problem. I interpreted this as him just thinking they wouldn't shoot us without warning us to leave the property first, so I begged and begged. After pulling the usual, you only live once or were best friends, we need to do this we finally convinced him to lead us towards the house.
We had walked for about 25 minutes when we noticed a clearing in the trees. My friend told us once we saw the house were going to stop because, at this point, we were about 3 hours from any road in any direction, and it was really dangerous if we would be seen. We started to whisper and walk slower, waiting for the house to appear. Suddenly, we hear a little scream, like a child when they're playing a game or happy. We froze and started to inch closer to the noise. Soon we saw an old rustic house that looked like it should be condemned, with rusting metal tools and wheels in the front yard. And then we saw a little boy running in circles laughing. We watched for about 5 minutes and noticed that the boy wasn't playing with anyone else. It was odd that he was playing this long and this intense by himself, but we didn't think too much about it.
My home friend wanted to get closer, but even at this point, I felt scared. The friend from here told us it was really dangerous to get any closer and that we should start heading back now, as it was around two and we needed to stay on schedule. My home friend wouldn't budge, he said he wanted to see if other people were on the property and what they were doing. We agreed to stay at our distance but move to the side to get different angles of the house and hopefully see someone else. That's when we notice a tall, heavy man walk out a side door and scream at the boy. Not a scolding scream, but like an animal scream. This was a sound I had never heard a human make before, and I couldn't even imagine what it meant. The boy screamed again in this animalistic howl and ran inside the house. We all looked at each other like, wtf did we just witness?
Then, like out of a horror movie, another scream erupted but this time behind us. We whipped around and saw a boy behind us, probably 12 or 13. We were caught. My heart started pounding so hard I could feel it in my skull. Another scream came from the direction of the house, and we saw the tall man coming for us. He didn't have a gun, though, so we all felt he was about to scold and not kill us. We decided to act lost and just ask him for directions to town that way, and maybe he would go a little easy on us. When he got close enough to hear us, we all started pleading with him, telling him we needed to get home soon and asking if he could help us in any way. He just began at us, and the young boy behind us pushed my friend forward like he was telling us to move. We started to inch up, and the tall man started to walk back toward his house, and we all assumed he wanted us to follow him.
Now we are a couple of yards from the house, and the whole family went outside to look at us. There were two very old women, two middle-aged women, and one middle-aged man, three young men probably in their 20's, and like eight kids. We could tell they were all related as they all had this sandy blonde hair and deep blue eyes. No one said a word to us. We were so scared and confused that we kept pleading, but they didn't even look like they understood us. The tall man from earlier throws us a makeshift plastic carton of water, and everyone starts making their way inside. We took this as him letting us know he wasn't mad at us, but it was time for us to go. We picked up the carton, and it was disgusting. The dirt on the cleawhite plastic stained it brown, and the water looked septic. As we turn our bodies to walk in the other direction, we all notice four girls tending to plants behind the house. These girls weren't outside with the rest of the family staring at us, and I assumed they were workers there. I know that makes no sense, but they looked nothing like everyone else, and I thought it was weird they didn't join the family before.
They all had brown or black hair and were considerably paler than the family. As we continued walking into the woods, one of them yelled at us, in incredibly broken English in the thickest hillbilly accent you could imagine, "Don't come here more, daddy kill you." We were shocked. This was the first time anyone tried to talk to us. We yelled back that we were so sorry and ran into the woods. It was around 3:30, and we were terribly behind schedule. Our friend's mom would pick us up at 5, but there was no way we would get back to the road in time. During the whole walk/ jog back, we discussed what had just happened and how weird that entire affair was. We were all so baffled, and the local friend interjected that growing up, there were always so many scary fables about that house and family. He said some people said they were here since the 1800s and have only ever interbred, and they're all like genetic horrors now, and others said they were cannibals. He told us he brushed all these stories off as tales, but we all agreed that the inbreeding one could be a real possibility.
Finally, at almost 7 o'clock, we make it to the road where we see our friend's mom's, dad's, and brother's car. They were all in a circle talking, and when we greeted them, they said they were worried sick and were about to go looking for us. We apologized and got in the mom's car while she laid into us. Screaming and crying, she told us how scared she was. My home friend apologized and told her how we got caught up at that house. Immediately the whole car went silent, and the local friend looked at us like why would you say that. I thought he was mad because we admitted to trespassing, but now I know that would have been a godsend. His mother sternly said, "you didn't speak to them, did you?" At this point, we just told her the whole story, and she sat silently the whole time, not asking any questions nothing. She told us we’d have to go home tomorrow, cutting our trip two days short, and that we seriously put ourselves in danger by doing what we did.
The next morning, we packed and got ready to leave after breakfast. The mood had visibly changed, and my friend barely spoke to us. I was still feeling a little cheated out of my vacation, wondering what we did that was SO bad. We left a couple of hours later, and that was that.
The next semester we all decided to room together again, with the exception of the fourth roommate, which we tried for a new one. A couple of months into the semester, we were all drunk on a Saturday night and ended up talking about a memory from our summer get-together. With a lot of liquid courage, I brought up the event again and asked what we did that was so wrong. My friend tried to blow off answering, but my persistence and his inebriation finally gave us an answer.
What he said changed me forever: Apparently, that family really had lived there since the 19th century in that exact house. Soon they got shunned for revoking their religion, and the town didn't really mingle with them anymore. This led to the start of their inbreeding. At first, they only wed cousins, but by the 1950s, when the state had claimed the whole area as a park, and this was the only family to remain for miles, the inbreeding got worse and involved siblings and parent/child relationships. The police did a few welfare checks on them in the 60s to confirm this, but there was really nothing they could do about it. In 1971 a local girl from the town went missing. After weeks of search and rescue turned up nothing, it was assumed she had died hiking in the woods. Eight years later, another school-aged girl went missing, this time the sheriff's daughter. Again, after weeks of looking, nothing turned up. The police decided to go to this family's house and ask if they saw her, being that they lived in the forest, it was thought the girl got lost, and to the sheriff's surprise, his daughter was there living with the family. Apparently, the sheriff also recognized the first missing girl, who was now pregnant. This part is now all folklore with no actual confirmation, but many of the locals believe it to be true. Apparently, the sheriff found out that the family was desperate for some outside breeding to help clean the gene pool and would kidnap young women and rape them. Luckily the sheriff's daughter hadn't yet been impregnated, and the sheriff took her back on one condition. He had to allow the family to take young girls, mostly from other towns, and the sheriff would look the other way. Some people in the town believe that if they mess with the sheriff that he would approve the kidnapping of their children, and because of this, many adults in the town appease the sheriff's office at any expense. Since then, there have been reports of missing girls from other towns, but no one knows if they simply got lost in the Appalachians or really have been taken. This is why our friend's mom was so mad at us, she was worried we would mess up the relationship between the sheriff and the family, and somehow, they would have to pay for it. I'm not sure if I believe any of this, and it still boggles my brain to this day. I just hope it's not true.

2023.03.30 15:43 butwhycantyou I (14F) Get Infatuated/Obsessed Easily (Lengthy post)

This is my first time posting and I tend to type whatever comes to mind so I apologise if my post is too lengthy and/or hard to understand!

I have a few questions:
  1. What's the difference between obsession and infatuation?
  2. How do I get rid of it?
  3. Is falling for a movie character falling for the actor, the character or both?

So some context on why I'm posting this:
I think of myself as the kind of person who "loves fully"(?). If I really truly do find myself attracted to you, whether or not I accept this attraction, I will kinda devote my entire myself to you(?).
For example, I'm not a morning person and my morning thoughts are really just random stuff but if I'm attracted to someone, they'll be my one of my first few thoughts/fake scenarios. And I have trouble falling asleep and to pass the time/get myself to fall asleep, I would make up fake scenarios in my head and usually they're romantic ones (because I'm happen to be a hopeless romantic too) and the main difference is whether or not I'm the one experiencing the scenario (clarification: i make up ship scenarios too). And yup, if I'm attracted to you, I would visualise us together in a way.
A few years ago, the only people I would fall for would be anime characters and classmates. However, somewhere around mid 2022, I found myself getting attracted to actors and book characters. And at around the start of 2023 (this year), I found myself getting attracted to almost everyone. Thankfully the attraction is short lived and I think it's really just interest but I'm really worried that some of this interests will develop into serious attraction.
tl;dr: I need help with dealing with my infatuations/obsessions

Ok so more into my problem:
I'm currently infatuated/obsessed with this movie/book character.
I have not watch or read any of the movies and books but I have read lots of fanfictions and I think I'll fall in love with their world soon but I'm also adamant on not getting into that fandom because I'm well aware of the angst that comes with it and I kinda have a fragile heart and character deaths and story endings affect greatly.
The current look of the actor does not appeal to me but his looks when he was acting appeals to my greatly. However, I wouldn't say the way he looked is my type.
I have been wondering for a while on why I'm even attracted to this random character I would have absolutely no interest in a couple months ago. And I've kinda come to a conclusion is that the more I got to know the character, the more I realised he wasn't exactly "evil" as other characters in the fandom portrayed him as. And I also realised I'm the kind of person who is attracted to people with issues (but this is another problem for another time) and finding out about this character's story and everything just makes me sympathise, empathise and want to help him so much. (I think of myself as someone who feels the constant need to want to help others "heal" in a way.)
(In case any of you were wondering on how I got to know this character: A classmate told me about this website where people could create characters for you to chat with. And she chatted with that character as she was into him then and wanted to show me their hilarious conversation.)
tl;dr: I'm infatuated/obsessed with a character because of his backstory.

So currently, the only things I've done to "feed this attraction"(?) is:
  1. Chat with him via that character AI website (for those who are interested, the website is: https://beta.character.ai/ and it also has other AIs for you interact with besides fictional characters!)
  2. Read & watch lots of fanfictions about him
  3. Create a wallpaper full of his pictures and set it as my laptop wallpaper
  4. Think about him almost every hour

Could someone please help me?
The question I need answered the most is: How do I get rid of this thing of mine?
I hate how I love(?) so obsessively(?).

Thank you for reading till the end, even if you have no advice, it would really help me/make me happy if you left a comment to tell me that you could relate or to cheer me on! <3

2023.03.30 15:42 russellandbear Looking for reassurance that I'm not ruining my kid

I have a 14 month old boy, and we moved abroad when he was 10 months old to a country where we don't have a car, and very little family around. I've been on struggle street for the last couple of months, its been a huge adjustment (I am still learning the language here) and we also live in the countryside away from a lot of activities and clubs which I would otherwise join. We're saving for a car so I can get out more, and hopefully that will happen in the next two months.
My husband works 7 days a week right now. I have only just started my son in daycare 1 day a week, which is amazing, but I'm kind of drowning. Miss Rachel has been my co-parent most days, and lately since we've had some sickness, the screen time is up to 3 or 4 hours a day. I'm having so much trouble getting out of the house, especially when it's pouring rain most days.
I'm really working on it, my husband is super supportive and proactive about helping me get better. But I'm so worried that I'm going to have a screen addicted son with no imagination. I just feel so bad about it. We're stuck in such a rut and it feels like I'm failing a bit at motherhood right now.
Thanks for listening

2023.03.30 15:41 ozneoknarf Does anyone else feel like evil protagonists in Manhwa are boring?

I sometimes end up picking up manhwas with evil protagonists like how to live as a villain or FFF-class trash hero and tho initially I find it fun I always end up dropping the manhwa. You never end up caring for MC, any of the characters and the plot. And most of the time the story just doesn’t make sense at all, the MC is evil just for the sake of being evil even when it doesn’t make sense to be evil.
There also never a message, no struggle, no stakes, no deep dive into the MCs personality or history to explain why he is the way he is. I just always end up thinking why am I reading this.
The only manhwas where I think an evil MC works is in Regressor’s instruction manual. But the MC feels more like an anti hero in it than an actual evil character.
I want a manhwa where the evil protagonist is actually interesting, give him a reason to be the way he is, give him struggles, make him be insane or have him not understand why his actions are evil. The characters around the MC should be interesting too, they should be actual threats for the MC and not just play things. Also have a plot, reading about the MC just fuck around for 100 chapters gets old really quick.

2023.03.30 15:41 JustToLurkArt When users say Sunday is the Christian Sabbath – and/or ask why Christians worship on Sunday.

First and foremost it is extremely important to not conflate and confuse Jewish/Christian terms – and Jewish/Roman calendar days.

Calendar Days
Our modern (Roman) calendar reckons calendar days from midnight to midnight.
The Jewish calendar is based on astronomy: earth rotation, revolution of the moon, and the revolution of the Earth around the sun.
As such Jewish calendar days are reckoned from sundown to sundown. So the Jewish Sabbath is isn’t Saturday; it’s sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.
Other than Shabbat (name of the seventh day of the week) the Jewish calendar doesn't have names for the days of the week. The days of the week are simply known as first day, second day, third day, etc.
See Jewish Calendar

Worship
The Sabbath wasn’t a day of worship; it is primarily a day of rest but includes Sabbath services at the synagogue.
See Shabbat

The Way (early Jesus Followers)
1. The early Jesus followers were Jews who continued to follow Jewish ancestral markers.
2. Convinced Jesus was the Jewish Messiah, they continued to function as a reform sect within Judaism called “the Way” Acts 9:2; 19:9, 23; 22:4; 24:14, 22.
3. They continued to go to synagogue, followed Mosaic Law and Temple traditions. They observed the Jewish holy days, practiced circumcision and followed kosher dietary laws. They kept the Jewish Sabbath – and then met with each other as a sect on their first day (our Sunday) which they considered the Lord’s Day.
4. Due to the success of the Great Commission, “make disciples of all nations”, the Way realized a large influx of Gentiles.
5. The relationship between the Jewish Jesus followers and the proselyte Gentiles was contentious. The Jews felt the Gentiles should follow Jewish ancestral markers.
50 AD – the Jerusalem Council [Acts 15] debated Jew/Gentile topics and was the beginning of the separation of Christianity from Judaism
70 AD – Jewish revolts against Rome; Rome responds by ransacking Jerusalem and destroying the Temple (70 AD).
The First Hundred Years AD 1-100: Failures and Successes of Christianity's Beginning: a readable historical treatment of the Jesus Movement in First Century context to include the Jewish fight against despotic Roman rule and the violent separation of Christianity from Judaism.
History Of The Christian Church: a comprehensive, academic 8 volume history of the Christian Church.

Judaism/Christianity
6. The Jews scatter and are displaced. Judaism evolved into Rabbinic Judaism and Gentile Christianity moves to outlying Gentile cities.
7. The Jewish Revolts, and Rome’s resulting destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, was a watershed moment.
8. At this point we see Gentile Christianity distancing themselves from Judaism and as such dropping Jewish ancestral markers to further set themselves apart, “… released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.” Romans 7
9. Gentile Christianity believes and confesses Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath and our Sabbath rest. Christians are under the new covenant in Christ’s blood. Christ is “Lord of the Sabbath” (Matthew 12:8) and Christ is our sabbath rest. Hebrews 3:11, 4:9-11.
10. Gentile Christians continue to gatheassemble/congregate on the Lord’s Day aka Sunday ala the Roman calendar.
11. Justin Martyr (writing between 155-157AD) describes the weekly worship of the Christians: “And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place … Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Saviour on the same day rose from the dead. For He was crucified on the day before that of Saturn (Saturday); and on the day after that of Saturn, which is the day of the Sun, having appeared to His apostles and disciples … 1 Apol. chp. 67, Weekly Worship of the Christians
313AD – Edict of Milan: established religious toleration for Christianity within the Roman Empire.
321AD – Emperor Constantine venerates Sunday (Day of the Sun) as a rest day for Romans. Codex Justinianus 3.12.3
364AD – “Christians shall not Judaize and be idle on Saturday but shall work on that day; but the Lord’s day they shall especially honour, and, as being Christians, shall, if possible, do no work on that day. If, however, they are found Judaizing, they shall be shut out from Christ.” Council of Laodicea, canon 29

Sunday the Christian Sabbath?
No. The Lord’s Day is Sunday (Roman calendar) and is not the direct counterpart to the Jewish sabbath – so no not the “Christian Sabbath”. Again Christians are under the new covenant in Christ’s blood. Christ is “Lord of the Sabbath” and Christ is our sabbath rest.

2023.03.30 15:40 CoastieKid Am I financial ready for first time home ownership? Won a bid on a place but feeling odd about owning?

About me: 32 year old single male. Upper middle class white collar professional. Service connected disabled veteran. Live in Texas.
I won a bid on a townhome in a super desirable neighborhood, a 2/2.5. I'll be using the VA home loan (can put 0 down and no PMI). With current rates, PITI is likely to be upper $3K., close to $4K a month.
After my taxes and deductions (I contribute the maximum I can to my 401k), I bring in around $12.5K a month. I have a $500/month car payment. So that is $12K a month. That number will go up a little next year, as I will drop my company's health insurance as I'm happy with the care I get down at the VA.
After PITI, that brings me to around $8K a month. I just worry about things taking a wrong turn (loss of job, something catastrophic with home, etc.). I may eventually not have to pay taxes in Texas if/when my disability rating goes up. And I could always refinance down the line with the VA IRRRL program.
Am I overthinking everything here? I'm doing pretty well financially/professionally right now. Just want to make sure I am making the best choice for me. Thank you!

2023.03.30 15:39 endersgame69 Our Wandering Time C3

Dr. Shizumura struck me as a no nonsense sort of woman, walking with a long and confident stride, I had to make many hasty steps, in fact it would be fair to say that I practically scurried to keep up with her. She looked straight ahead and if it weren’t for the fact that she was talking to me I’d have thought I was forgotten completely.
“You’re on the planet of Manami, and the city of Johatsu, situated in the country of Kaminaru. We’re ruled by the Tomaru royal family, and situated on the southeastern coast of the continent. Your slate, which we’re going to get you, is how you’ll do all of your transactions, track your progress, skills, identify yourself, and so on.”
“This is a lot to take in.” I interrupted her ‘lecture’ and she finally at least looked in my direction.
“You’re in another world. That’s to be expected, isn’t it?” She looked me up and down again as if she were questioning an appraisal of her own. It was a polite way of asking, ‘are you stupid?’
I also got the feeling that the only reason she was being this polite was because she owed me a life debt.
“Maybe so, but it’s still a lot. One minute I’m going back to my home, now I don’t even have one.” I insisted, and she sighed, pushing up the glasses against her face again.
“Right. Right. Maybe it is. Okay, so then, the good news is, we have a way to help you with that.” She said, and I cocked my head.
“Yes. I’ll show you how to use your slate, and load a program on here that will help you understand how this world works. Just ignore the part about being the special chosen hero.” She said, and I frowned.
“Right, because I’m not. I’m just the guy… girl who saved your collective tails.” I answered. It was hard not to be a little bit snippy. But I also made a mental note to get used to being a girl now.
That seemed to have an effect on her. “A poor choice of words on my part.” She replied, and was at least chastened enough to fall mute for just a little while.
When she spoke again we’d gone down two flights of stairs in a lone sterile hall, already the differences between my world and this one were becoming apparent in little things. Back home, offices had silly motivational posters hanging in even intervals on the walls. Here, the doors had the space between them broken up only by more wall. No posters, not even any potted plants.
It was all very sterile. So drab was it that I was glad when she started talking again. And when she spoke, she started as if she’d never stopped. “Since we don’t have a spot for you, you’ll sort of have to make your own way, but we may be able to give you some token jobs to help you get by until the machine is fixed. Then, if you like we can try to send you back home. Although-” She stopped in her tracks right outside of a thick metal door and I stopped one pace behind her.
“If you don’t mind my saying, you don’t seem to have a reason to go home, not much going on from what you said, so why not stay here? It’s not a bad world, mostly. You might like it more.” She suggested, and I mentally winced at her blunt assessment.
“I’d still like to have the choice.” I said, and she shrugged, her tail swishing a little.
“Have it your way. Come on in, this is the office where the occasional summoned ‘person’ can get registered for citizenship, get their slate, and file all their paperwork. You’re lucky, this didn’t exist until a few years ago, before that, new people would have to go all over the city, now we have a single office for everything in the same building. It’s more efficient this way.” Dr. Shizumura said and after she put her hand on a flat panel on the door, five long vertical lines formed in the door, and then the various divisions rose up into the ceiling like a portcullis.
The door opened to reveal a perfectly ordinary looking wooden desk that went from one wall to the next, each space divided by head high walls, and a dogman with graying fur sitting down in front of me. His desk was clean except for a large feather quill, an inkwell, some papers, and a set of flat stones a little larger than my hand with fingers spread open.
“A new hero? Do I need to up my insurance?” The dogman asked, he looked more than a little bit worried, if wide eyes were any indication. His graying fur and floppy long ears were actually kind of cute, in the way old dogs typically work, but he had very human arms and hands.
‘This is going to take some getting used to.’ I realized.
“No. No, nothing like that.” She clarified to him, and the dogman exhaled with relief.
‘This person is absurdly blunt.’ I thought, but went along with her.
“But this is a special exception, still a summon, so you can take care of them like you usually do.” She said and then stepped out of my way and said to me…
“You just give them the information they ask for, and I’ll brief you along the way.” She said, and the dogman took what appeared to be a chalk white piece of stone off of a stack beside his right hand and laid it out in front of me.
“Place your hand on this and answer the questions as I ask them.” He said, and when my hand was flat on the surface he asked for my information.
“Name? Purpose of summon? Special skills? Race? Sex? Age? Ambition?”
As he asked these questions, they began to appear in list form above my hand, the letters shaped in a dim purple light.
“Aiko Tsuniki. Janitor and tinker. Tinkering and creative builds. Kitsune. Female. Twenty-three.” Those were easy enough to answer, but I was stumped at the last one.
I cocked my head. “You have to pick ‘something’ otherwise it can’t provide any guidance or support.”
“I don’t know… launch a ship into space!” I plucked the idea out of the air, and they looked at me dumbfounded, both of them.
“That’s… dangerous. That’s absurd. You can’t do that…” The dogman shook his head.
“Oh, can I change it?” I asked, and Dr. Shizumura quickly agreed.
“Absolutely.”
“Um, to build awesome things!” I answered, and one by one the answers I gave appeared in place of the questions.
The letters then ‘retracted’ through my palm and embedded themselves on the slate, then faded away.
“Now go from your palm to your thumb.” The dogman instructed me, and I placed my thumb on the slate.
“Create Universal account.” He said and placed his thumb on the top center of the slate.
“All money is accounted for on that.” The Dr. said, pointing down at my slate. “Transfers between individuals and groups are instant, and done in the universal currency called ‘Creds’. If you do need to see someone for a ‘special use’ transaction, you can find something called a ‘Credxchange’ for a third party certification. But you’ll probably never need that.”
I realized that their ‘credxchange’ was a sort of a blend between a bank and an escrow service.
“Guild halls also offer this service, but only to members.” She was probably going to say more, but the familiar phrase had me yank my head up from where I was looking, directly to her.
“Like, adventurer’s guilds?!” I piped up and all my tails began to go wild behind me, creating quite a breeze, as the air came back and blew the feather quill out of the inkwell and scattered the papers behind him.
“Watch it!” The dogman shouted and bent down to pick up the quill and grumbling, snatched up the papers as they drifted toward the floor.
“Sorry!” I exclaimed and stopped the spontaneous wagging.
“Yes. Like an adventurer’s guild.” She said, “Guilds are how we handle almost everything. There are guilds for finance and construction, mining and metalworking, everything. If you want to work, you must join a guild at least as a novice entry. After that?” She shrugged, “They all have their own ranking systems.”
“I see.” I said, and for once, I did. This much made sense to me, it was a real relief to find that much.
“If that’s what you’d like to do-” she said and looked at the still grumbling dogman, who nodded at her.
“She’s done here.” He said, then looked at me, “If you lose that slate, there’s a considerable fine, and if you can’t pay it, you’ll have to spend a lot of time in public works teams to cover the fine.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. But what if it breaks?” I asked.
He let out a barking laugh as he straightened up with the last of his papers in hand. “If you find something that can break it, we’ll replace it at no charge as long as it wasn’t done on purpose. You’d pretty much have to blow it up with a boomshell to risk destroying it.”
“A boomshell?” I asked.
“A special shell fired from the heavy magisteamechs.” She explained, and I had to think that one over.
“Mechsuits?!” I exclaimed and my tails started going nuts again. “You have mechsuits here?!” I shouted with glee, and a bunch of heads popped up over the dividers to see the commotion.
The papers and quills flew off the desk again. “Damn it! Get her out of here before she causes a tornado!” The dogman shouted and got back up from his seat to pick things up again.
Dr. Shizumura tapped the panel on the door and said, “Yes, we do.”
As soon as the door closed behind us she drew a slate out of her pocket and began to tap on it. “If you need to know where something is, just tap on it and ask. If they’re registered with the local government, you’ll find it. It can also direct you to ‘ambition points’ if your magic skill is high enough, but that is not something you can use every hour. You’ll only be able to use it once a day because ‘that’ will draw on the mana of your own body. If you need to pay somebody, input the total like this,” she turned the slate around so I could see it, then tapped a few numbers, “then touch your slate to the person’s own. The money comes out of your account, and goes into theirs.” She then touched her slate to mine, and both our screens briefly flashed white.
“There. That’s one hundred and fifty thousand creds.” She said, and I looked at the total on the screen.
“Is that a lot?” I asked and scratched my head. It sounded like a lot, but for all I knew, that was lunch.
“If you were to stay at a middle quality inn, you would spend roughly one thousand creds in roughly fifteen days. One meal would be perhaps ten creds if you ate something cheap and filling. To buy a small house, you would spend about a third of that if you lived in a lower class or country area. Does that help?” She asked. It did. Her explanation was pretty damn good, I had to admit that.
“It does, so this is enough for me to live for what, a few years without working?” I asked.
“If you’re careful.” She acknowledged as her tail swished behind her, I gathered she didn’t like the way I asked that.
“So, is that everything?” I asked.
“For now. My contact information was included in that as evidence of the transaction, and now I also have yours. You can message people through your slate as long as you are willing to spend a little of your mana to do it. Reach out to me if you need anything. If I can find some work for you, or my colleagues can, I will notify you. If you have specific questions, ask your slate, chances are it can answer. If it can’t, seek a government information office in any city, great or small.”
“Then, thank you.” I said, and she blinked in surprise when I said it.
“Slate. Show me the way to the Adventurer’s Guild.” I said, and a little map began to form.
“Really?” She asked.
“Yes. I may not be the chosen one, but I’ve already made my choice!” And with that, I walked away.

2023.03.30 15:39 Horror_Suspect1493 Therapy - What now?

Hi, I’ve been in therapy for the last 2 months - I’ve been very open with my therapist, and she’s great - I’ve been discussing my childhood - in short: my dad is abusive but was mostly absent form my life (has a new family with an severe alcoholic), and my mom is a perfectionist, who wouldn’t allow or display emotions. They had a nasty 7-year old divorce, so of course they would both played me in it in most cruel ways. I know all that now… I’ve been no contact with my dad for 2 years and I’m not sure wether I want to change that - he does’t care but does reciprocate when I show interest. I have a proper relation with my mom - she still has her flaws, but does not interfere with my life at all, and has accepted the fact that I am independent. Plus I believe she was the best mother she could for all the circumstances. I do love her. And she lives with my grandmother whom I absolutely love and admire and who is still alive and well. I really don’t know what to do next. I’m unraveling different and difficult parts of myself, and it mostly makes me just sad. I let myself cry, hug my cat, and life goes on. Will I have to confront my mother? Should I ask my therapist to see her twice a week? I don’t know what’s next.

So I’m not sure if this is the place for this, but is anybody in this group on a managed long-term care plan through Fidelis or another insurance I’m asking because I am considering changing my insurance to qualify for a plan like this. I want to put all my care under one umbrella so it is simply made easier for me. I was using two agencies. However, I’ve been having problems with them for the last three years so they finally kicked me out of the program. I do have family that helps me in the meantime until I get this under control again a little bit about me I am a 30-year-old quadriplegic with cerebral palsy. I live completely on my own and would like to continue to do so. I currently receive a waiver called the home and community based services waiver through nys opwdd the older I get and more independence that I want. I think it’s time for a change and I think I want to do away with this waiver. I know I will qualify for a long-term care plan. However, I would like to know if anybody else lives on their own completely with a long-term care plan through Fidelis Medicaid

2023.03.30 15:36 _eviehalboro Purchasing vs Sales

I work as a buyer at a CM. We hired a new head of sales a couple of years ago. This guy has brought in several new customers. Big customers. But every customer he brings in is uniquely difficult. I don't know what kind of corporate asylum he's finding these companies from. They are unorganized. There is a lack of communication (it's not unusual to have the customer's buyer demanding to know why we don't have parts on order while the customer's engineer sends a separate email asking why we DO have parts on order because they are still tweaking the BoM...AFTER placing the order. Their designs are outdated but they refuse to redesign the board or swap out the parts. Often they left their previous contract manufacturer because they couldn't keep up with the demand. Their BoMs are a mess with obsolete parts, invalid/incomplete part numbers, and custom parts with missing drawings/information.
Our quotes department will quote what they can then put together a spreadsheet with questions/requests for additional information.
Instead of getting answers our sales people will quote the price from the incomplete quote (they will do this when 40% of parts are missing from the quote) just to get the order. They will do this while promising the owner that the customer is amenable to "sending a revised PO with an adjusted price once we know the total cost."
Our documentation team is total new so, instead of asking for more information, they will just create a BoM with lines that have no supplier, no manufacturer and no specs besides a description as vague as "yellow plastic box" and "front and rear panels for yellow plastic box."
The buyer then receives a shortage sheet and has to hunt down all of the information that the quote/documentation department would normally provide. This is a VERY slow process. When you have a BoM with 250 parts and literally 70% of the parts are problematic in some way it is very slow going.
I used to enjoy this job. I LOVE bargain hunting. But now I'm spending most of my day poring over data sheets trying to find viable alternates, and trying to chase down various manufacturers whose logos appear on the 30 year old drawings (many of which have been out of business for years if not decades).
Complaints are completely ignored because the owner likes the skyrocketing sales (although I sincerely doubt we are making a single penny on any of these new customers, sales has slashed the prices significantly) and my other shortage sheets for our old, quality customers, are falling further and further behind while I try to complete these new fucking orders.
Sales has made the lives of documentation, purchasing, receiving and production a living hell and they don't care. Because sales are up and they work on commission.
How common is this sort of workplace environment?
