My Top 10 Mods
2023.06.11 00:16 Tom1923 My Top 10 Mods
This is inspired by this post, it was a neat idea to bring this in now (especially since the next top ten poll is just a week or so away.) Also I'm excluding 1948Red from this list because it's my mod and I'm naturally biased.
For this list, also worth noting I'm choosing based on mods I replay the most often instead of what I think is, like, higher quality or whatever. It doesn't matter if a mod is super well written if it doesn't grab your interest and make you want to replay it.
- 1793 ANAR by RouteVenus — 1793 ANAR is the latest reiteration of RouteVenus' towering creativity and modding talent. I had the pleasure of playing this mod while it was in development, and it wowed me then as it wows me now. The endless amount of endings covered in that New Vegas slideshow style make this mod infinitely replayable and it's the only mod where I can say every choice on the Trail matters.
- 1844c by Rekkotekko — This selection knocked off 1976IT from my last list, but... I'm sorry, I just keep coming back to it. Maybe it's because I find the Mormon origin deeply interesting or because it's so innovative with the unique survival aspect, but I just love it. It's super underrated, mostly due to how out-there it is.
- 1964Midnight by Gardfeld — Gardfeld is one of my favorite people in the community, and he delivered with the prequel iteration of the Midnight Series. It's a solid mod.
- 1936L by Calgar77 — It's a solid mod, and no doubt will get better with the release of the Dawes side. A lot of people just assume it's a HOI4-style mod—and that's not totally inaccurate—but 1936L also manages to capture the 1930s aesthetically and in the writing in a way no other mod has yet done.
- 1916b by SkipperPengn — This mod revolutionized the presidential simulator, and managing the War as Roosevelt is really fun. My two problems with the mod is that the Bryan side is a little boring by comparison and the mod is filled to the brim with landmine answers that tank your support.
- 1968Romney by Obummer — I really didn't like this mod when it was first released. I thought it was sorta weird and the writing was stilted. But over the previous months my opinion on this mod has gradually changed, and I now recognize what I failed to see. This mod has narrative, it has characters and it has style. And it doesn't just have that style, it exudes it. This mod is probably the best-written mod of all time and that's not hyperbole on my part.
- 1996Powell by Astrohunch — It's crazy how slept-on this mod is. The writing is fantastic and it's very well-coded. Could've used a Clinton side though.
- 1972d by RouteVenus and others — It's the quintessential mod about a third-party candidate, and famously swept the Dan Bryan Awards in March. I love this mod, it's well-written and the gameplay's fun, but the fact that's really only one path to feasible success (get to 5%, get to 5%, get to 5%...) hampers replayability somewhat.
- 1920b by SkipperPengn — This was for a long time my favorite mod, but it has regrettably lost that throne in the previous weeks. Still, I love this mod and I replay it often. 1916b revolutionized the presidential simulator, and the Bryan side of this mod perfected it. The Wood side is also really cool.
- 1864 by Astrohunch_o, Verbluffen and... the other guy, SVEN! — I don't know why, but I just keep coming back to this mod. Listen, I love history, and 1864 takes the historical mod genre and just ascends it to a whole different level of awesome. The 50 question length is absolutely necessary given the scope of the Civil War, and means the mod can go into as much detail as possible. This has become my "comfort mod", if that makes sense, and the Butlerverse addition just makes it even better as the most detailed alt-history lore we've seen—in a historical mod! This mod was so good they made a movie about it with Daniel Day Lewis. What else can I say?
Honorable Mentions: 1976IT (I'm really sad this was left out), 1828, 1930 Weimar, 2008

2023.06.10 18:41 bowlderholder Planning a 9-day solo road trip in Aug, these are the only two main stops to check off my NP list! Any ideas of stops to add on or route to take back home? Car camping over hotel stays
Some added detail: I have 5 days to get to this airbnb outside of Gatlinburg, TN that my best friend rented for 3 days during this trip which I'll be staying at with her. I'm most likely only staying for the first 2 days (she's road tripping from our home state with her fiance) so that I can have 3 days to get myself back home. However, i plan to get to the smokey mountains possibly the day before to explore on my own and maybe camp the night before i meet with her somewhere in the park. Clingmans Dome is the only one on my list so far for that NP. Probably only going to do one day in the Hot Springs to check out a bathhouse experience. I'm open to any and all ideas for stops and trails! Nature gems specifically if you know of any, and of course food is key 😉

2023.06.09 17:49 WTFnoAvailableNames Towns close to Tokyo for a short stay
Hello!
Me and my wife are going to Tokyo in the end of July for 2 weeks. We have an idea that we would like to spend ~5 nights in Tokyo and then go some other place for 2-3 nights and then return to Tokyo for the rest of our stay.
I wanted to ask for recommendations about places we could go for these 2-3 nights. Here are some preferences that we would like to consider:
-location is within a few hours from tokyo, preferably by train.
-location has hotels with relatively smooth connection options (eg. Taxi, train station).
-location is in relatively close proximity to nature or countryside, eg. Hiking trails, forests, lakes, national parks etc.
-alternatively, there are car rental options close to city/town outskirts (would prefer as little city driving as possible)
-cultural and/or historical sites such as temples, ruins, castles etc.
We have looked at areas around Mt. Fuji and Mt. Takao but we aren't sure where good places to stay would be.
Any suggestions and tips would be very appreciated!

A tour guide is not just a travel companion; they are professionals with a wealth of knowledge about the destinations they serve. They possess a deep understanding of the history, culture, and significance of the places they guide you through. Imagine standing in front of a majestic monument, and your guide passionately narrates its story, bringing it to life with anecdotes and historical context. With their expertise, tour guides transform mere landmarks into captivating narratives, making your travel experience truly memorable.
Insider Access
One of the most significant advantages of having a tour guide is gaining access to hidden gems and insider knowledge. While guidebooks and online resources offer valuable information, a local tour guide goes beyond the mainstream attractions. They unveil the lesser-known spots, charming cafes, and off-the-beaten-path trails that only a local would know. By immersing yourself in the culture and lifestyle of a destination, you can truly appreciate its uniqueness and discover hidden treasures that may have otherwise remained undiscovered.
Smooth and Hassle-Free Experience
Navigating through a foreign land can sometimes be daunting, especially if you're unfamiliar with the local language or customs. A tour guide acts as your compass, ensuring that you make the most of your time and enjoy a smooth travel experience. They handle logistical aspects such as transportation, tickets, and reservations, freeing you from the stress of planning and allowing you to fully embrace the journey. Moreover, they provide assistance and support, ensuring that you feel comfortable and safe throughout your travels.
Cultural Immersion
Traveling is not just about visiting landmarks; it's about connecting with people and immersing yourself in different cultures. A tour guide acts as a cultural ambassador, introducing you to the traditions, customs, and way of life of the locals. They bridge the gap between tourists and locals, enabling authentic interactions and meaningful experiences. Whether it's trying local cuisine, participating in traditional ceremonies, or engaging in cultural activities, a tour guide helps you delve deep into the heart and soul of a destination.
Personalized Experiences
Tour guides understand that every traveler is unique, with different interests and preferences. They offer personalized experiences that cater to your specific needs, ensuring that you make the most of your time in a destination. Whether you're a history buff, a nature enthusiast, or a food lover, a tour guide can tailor the itinerary to match your passions. They provide recommendations, insider tips, and flexibility, allowing you to create memories that resonate with your personal interests and desires.
The Essence of Human Connection
In today's digital age, where information is readily available at our fingertips, you might wonder if a tour guide is still necessary. However, what sets them apart is the essence of human connection. A tour guide not only imparts knowledge but also shares their love for their homeland, creating a sense of shared enthusiasm and appreciation. They become more than just guides; they become friends, forging connections that transcend geographical boundaries and leaving a lasting impact on your travel experiences.
In conclusion, a tour guide is an indispensable companion who enhances your travel adventures. With their expertise, insider access, and personalized touch, they transform ordinary journeys into extraordinary expeditions. So, the next time you embark on a new adventure, consider the invaluable role of a tour

2023.06.09 06:09 The_Alloquist [A Lord of Death] - Chapter 63 (Efrain)
[←Chapter 62] [Cover Art] [My Links] [Index] [Discord] [Subreddit] [Chapter 64→] The students were quickly dismissed by the Mentor after Efrain declared a winner, who was desperate to do damage control.
“Okay, okay,” he said, brushing down his coat and coughing, “I see that we have failed to meet your standards. On behalf of the entire academy, I apologize immensely.”
Efrain, now that his temper had cooled, and upon realizing that he actually found the situation quite funny, put his hand on the man’s shoulder.
“No, no,” he laughed, “it was all merely an overreaction. Nicolo loved practical jokes. But, for all that, I doubt he would’ve continued teaching at this academy for years if he had no investment beyond it pranking me.”
And just like that, the man’s hope was restored.
“Yes, yes of course,” he said, “although I suggest you not tell what the inscription says to the other faculty. Some have spent… years on it.”
“No wonder, it’s a personal language we made up when we were youths. It’s a ramshackle, cobbled together thing, nigh-impossible to figure out, unless one was inflicted by the insight of drunken insanity.”
The man laughed, Efrain laughed, and he looked around at the academy’s towers and bridges.
“Well, he did fine for himself, clearly,” Efrain said, “even married an Eisen. Its good to know he spared some thought for me, even if it was to pull one over in death. Now I can’t even get revenge now. Clever bastard.”
“Yes, quite,” said the man, coughing, “now, I would be happy to show you to your office. It’s one of our finest.”
The whole situation wasn’t merely funny, he decided, it was hilarious. Unfortunately for Nicolo, Efrain still remembered some of his more embarrassing exploits. He wondered if the man had a biography that was taught - perhaps it needed some correction by a primary source.
“Well, lead on,” he said to the Mentor.
They proceeded from one of the lower bridges to the largest of the four connected towers. The panelled walls were both old and expensive, indicating that the school was indeed more than a joke Students of multiple ages and stripes went this way and that, some carrying books, others merely chatting among friends. Several more hallways and a staircase or two later, the mentor stood before a tall door.
“And here it is,” he said, puffing out his chest with pride, “one of our best.”
“That’s the second time,” Efrain noted, and the man self-consciously pushed open the door, revealing a narrow room.
It was comfortable, with a large desk taking up most of the space, a small bed and stove tucked into the corner. The wall behind the desk was mostly of modest bookshelves, stocked with tomes, some familiar, others not so much. A single, large window, open shutters flung outward, looked out toward the center of the city. The mentor looked around, and then at Efrain, clearly anxious to please.
“Wonderful,” Efrain said, “I hope I’m not depriving anyone of their space for my short stay.”
“No, no, not at all,” the mentor said, “in fact, your timing was fortuitous. One of the professors has elected to retire.”
“Ah,” Efrain said, sitting in the large chair behind the desk.
“You must be exhausted,” said the Mentor, hovering by the door, “I suppose I’ll just come and check on you in the morning. Supposedly your group is to attend the Festival as honoured guests.”
“News to me,” Efrain said, leaning back as he looked out the open window.
“Would you like a change of clothes, a meal, water to bathe in?” said the man.
“No, thank you,” Efrain said, “in fact, I wouldn’t mind a brief tour, actually.”
The man’s face lit up in response to the casual suggestion - clearly he took pride in the institution.
“Yes, yes, why of course, I would be happy to,” he said, “when would you like to begin?”
“Now,” Efrain said, getting up from his chair and moving past the man.
“Actually, now that I think of it, the last of the evening classes should be just starting,” said the Mentor, “would you like to sit in on one. It uses your books.”
A couple minutes, and Efrain was sitting in the back of a small room, dozens of fresh-faced students looking back between him and a professor at a lectern.
“So, as we discussed in the last class,” said the old man with a beard hanging over his considerable stomach, “actually, who would dare to tell me what is the ultimate goal of magic.”
Efrain was busy rifling through the provided textbook on the matter, his apprehension growing with every page that he passed. He’d forgotten just how bad some of his earliest work had been, and now was reliving his mistakes with vivid horror. Several hands rose, and a young girl who couldn’t be more than twelve was selected.
“Magic is a purest expression of the human,” she said, clearly reciting what she’d learned by heart, “it is an attempt to get away from the base naturalness of ourselves and transcend into something greater.”
Efrain stifled a groan as he heard his early and more poetic pondering on magics parroted back at him.
The class continued on until Efrain couldn’t stand it any longer. The professor was in the middle of explaining how magic could be derived from the environment, which was correct, but that was inferior in all cases to simply deriving it from oneself, which wasn’t. Efrain snapped the booklet shut as loud as he could, drawing the gaze of everyone in the class.
“Alright,” he said, getting up, “we need to stop. Stop. All of this is a mistake.”
The professor, quite confused, looked towards the mentor for any sign that he should intervene. The mentor merely shook his head as Efrain stalked towards the lectern.
“My good man, take a seat for a little while,” Efrain said, “there are some errors of mine I have to correct.”
He gripped the edges of the lectern, trying to decide how best to approach this, and begun by clearing his throat.
“Is knowledge truth?” he said, prompting a rash of confused stares.
He departed from the lectern, and walked in front of the students.
“Again, is knowledge truth? Is knowledge automatically, by definition, true?”
“Well, yes,” said a young man slowly.
“Ah,” Efrain said, rounding on him, “so, if I were to stumble on half a conversation a noblewoman has about some innocent meeting she had with a young man, mistook it for an affair, and reported it to her husband, would I be lying?”
“Well, yes, kind of?” said the boy, his brows furrowing. Several of the other students blushed at the impropriety of the statement.
“But that was using the knowledge I possessed, and if knowledge is truth, then where is the lie?” Efrain said, sitting on the edge of the table, “all I did was relay my knowledge, hence, relay the truth to my friend, her husband.”
“I- I-,” said the boy, “then you were misinformed.”
“Precisely,” Efrain said, taking the book from before him and walking back to the front of the class to raise it before the children.
“The truth cannot lie, by definition, but knowledge can, implying that it is a distinct entity from the truth,” Efrain said, as he rounded the lectern.
“Perhaps it is not a matter of relaying the truth,” called the mentor from the back, “but inferring the truth only from half-knowledge.”
Efrain pointed the booklet towards him.
“And that is why he is a mentor and you are still students,” Efrain said, “but what is the point I hear you asking?”
A few genuinely seemed to think he could hear their thoughts and shrank back from this strange, belligerent man.
“The point is this - the books you’re reading are nonsense. Inferences made from a tiny amount of knowledge, by an overconfident idiot.”
The professor started forward at this sacrilege of the texts, but the mentor held him back.
“Now, if you’re intelligent, which I’m sure all of you are, you should be asking about now, ‘how could he possibly know? Who is he to come into our class and start making such claims?’ That’s good,” Efrain paused, and pointed to the cover.
“Would someone care to read me the title of this particular text?” he said.
One of the students, another boy, looked down and began to say in a high, weedly voice.
“Basic Principles of Magic: A Treatise,” he said, looking up to see if he’d somehow passed whatever test Efrain was given him.
“Keep going young man,” Efrain said, nodding him on.
“W-written by Nicolo Eisen, Efrain Belacore, and Avidius Armsted, compiled by Nicolo Eisen and Avidius Armsted.”
“Which is to say, ‘principally written by Efrain Belacore and Avidius Armsted, with footnotes of historical nature by Nicolo Eisen.’ He was always more interested in the history anyways,” Efrain said, slapping the book on the lectern.
The children all looked back and forth between each other, trying to see if any had an understanding better than themselves.
“To answer your question,” Efrain said, “the reason I both possibly know and get to come into your class and make such claims is that I am the middle name on your textbook.”
The explosion of curiosity and confusion was a delight to Efrain, who held up the book to the ceiling, pointing to it.
“To be clear, my name, young ones, is Efrain Belacore, and I’m here to tell you why half of my book is wrong, and the other half is incomplete.”
The class sat in dumbfounded silence, trying to gauge what the appropriate response to such information could possibly be.
“Let’s start with something simple, though, young lady,” Efrain pointed to the young girl who’d given the first definition to start the class.
“Y-Yes, professor?”
“Restate your definition, if you’d be so kind,” he said, which she did word for word.
“I wrote that line when I was under the impression that magic was apart from the natural world,” Efrain said, “in the sense that it could be used to transform it, to add value to it, much like some artists will say that their paintings cut through to the soul of the subject, removing the mortal veil on top of it or some hogwash like that.”
Efrain walked in front of the class.
“We are all part of the natural world, even if we strive to rise above it, whatever that means,” Efrain said, “you get cut, you bleed, you do that enough you die, your body returns to the earth, and so on and so forth. Magic is an extension of all those natural processes, not something apart from it. So, young men and women, do not spurn the world in the pursuit of magic.”
Efrain spied a beautifully made pin, stuck in the hair of a young woman.
“Excuse me, could I borrow that for a moment?” he said, gesturing to the pin.
“Uh, y-yes, sure,” she said, hastily pulling out the pin and letting her hair fall around her shoulders as she presented it to him.
“Thank you very much,” he said, as he held up the pin.
“Right, do not spurn it in the pursuit of magic, rather, embrace it. Seek inspiration in it,” Efrain said, focusing on the butterfly motif.
Again, unbidden, the memories of exploding light and claps of sound.
Copies of the exact butterfly carven on the head of the pin streamed out, following trails of light to explode into pinwheels of light. The children shrieked, at first in fear than in delight as the show continued, and Efrain handed the pin back to its owner. She looked at the pin in what seemed like awe, checking it over for any alteration.
“The pin is intact,” Efrain said, “like I said - inspiration. I had no need to change it.”
The mentor was by his side, clapping at the show.
“I say, marvellously, marvellously done,” he said, “a finer display of magic I’ve never seen. You truly are a master.”
“If that passes for a ‘fine display’, mentor, you are easy to please,” Efrain chuckled, “now, I suggest we leave the poor professor to his work.”
“Oh, I don’t think so,” the Mentor said, “after all, you’ve just ruined the integrity of the text he taught from! Students, you are dismissed from your studies for the day. Emilio, take a break for tonight, me and master Efrain have some discussions to have.”
It crossed Efrain’s mind that he might’ve just signed up for some extensive work in the near future. This however, was his academic integrity, and he wasn’t about to let those notes be his legacy, if he was going to have one. They took up the conversation in the hallway, leaving the students filing out behind them.
“That was simply incredible,” the mentor said, “I’m shocked that you were able to do it off the cuff. Just like that.”
“It was nothing,” Efrain said, “and that’s not self-praise, mentor. If you’re not able to do simple illusions of light like, then ‘my’ books have led you astray.”
Efrain stopped to look out through a window, seeing the central pyramid and its rooftop garden. “Though that’s not entirely fair to Nicolo and Armsted. I’ve been travelling and studying for nigh-on two centuries since I left. I’ve learned much more than what they were left to work with.”
When Efrain turned back to the man, he found that he was bowing low.
“What are you doing?”
“Oh please, master Efrain,” said the man, “please, led us back to greatness.”
“What?”
“You are truly, the most knowledgeable, the most revered, the most brilliant-”
“Stop that,” Efrain said, “I left my patience for flattery about a half-thousand miles west. Say what you mean, plainly.”
He tried to tell himself that was the truth, but he couldn’t deny it made his chest swell to hear such things, especially after so long on his own.
“We need you,” said the man, astonishing Efrain as he wiped tears from his eyes, “we are but children, stumbling around-”
“Do you do this with every guest?” Efrain said, trying to tamp down on the delight he felt.
“What? N-no. Be the mentor! I will gladly renounce it, if you are there to take the place. Lead our school, master Efrain!”
Efrain held his face as he considered what the man had just said.
“No,” he said, quashing the image of mentor Efrain squarely and firmly right there.
“B-but why?” the mentor blubbered, “anything you want, I’ll give it to you, anything! Name it and-”
“But I will rewrite those gods-damned books you have. Fill them with my current knowledge, which is far superior than that poetic dreck that I made back in the day,” Efrain said, “I would not be able to live with myself, if I left you with that swill.”
“Oh thank you! Thank you!” said the mentor, clasping his hands.
“Now, let’s get back to my office,” Efrain said, “I’m finding myself quite tired of this whole affair.”
“Yes, yes, of course,” said the man, straightening himself and gesturing the way.
“Tell me,” Efrain said, “your begging seems to indicate that the academy’s future is dire.”
“Oh, it’s bad,” sighed the man heavily, “we simply haven’t been able to produce things that are of much use. It is our shame, and as such, we’ve moved much of the studies to other, more practical subjects. Maths, history - magic is quickly becoming a pure pursuit of knowledge. The Eisen matriarch seems not to mind, but Poutash, and many of the established houses, well…”
Efrain nodded as he climbed the main stairs, shuffling by students. He tried to ignore the irrational guilt that plagued him. He’d just managed to put a lid on it as they reached the office, where within he sank into the chair. The mentor stood nervously by the door, almost like an attending student, not the director of a school. Efrain wondered how he got the position in the first place.
“Well, that was enlightening,” Efrain said, “I’ll retire now, I think.”
“Of course,” said Avencia, “yes, we shall leave you to it. I will have dinner sent up.”
“No need, we had some in the city,” Efrain said, “I don’t eat all that much anyways. Tell me, are there any particular teas you’d recommend? Local speciality or imported, I don’t care.”
The man thought for a few moments.
“I would have to ask someone else, but I will send up a set as soon as possible,” he said.
“Oh, and the books,” Efrain said, reclining back on the chair and looking out the window.
“Which books?” said the man excitedly.
“All of them. Any of them that bear my name,” Efrain said, “In fact, just send me all your core texts for magic. If I need any sort of historical references, I’ll make up a list while I’m reading them.”
The man practically stumbled over himself, thanking Efrain profusely and indicating that the entire curriculum would be sent up, as well as paper and ink. When the door shut, the quiet seemed almost unnatural to Efrain after the busy day he’d had. He picked up a book from the shelf, some piece of Karkosian history from a man he’d never heard of.
He sat back down in the chair, and curiously, he found his eyesight beginning to swim as he tried to parse the page. His body felt… heavy, exhausted even. He tried to resist it, tried to fight it as the book fell open on his lap, but his vision darkened, and soon Efrain had drifted off to sleep.

2023.06.09 00:46 Pupcake3000 Ongoing UAP disinformation and attempting to sow a bad faith logical evidence conversation.
I just want earnest readers and posters to continue to use critical thinking and application to the large attempts at swaying disinformation under the guise as an honest debunker or skeptic. With the recent revelations I've seen the same responses to this historic movement forward on the existence of NHI's. They would have you believe that this person hasnt seen or touched the NHI vehicles so we cannot believe his word. His credentials speak for themselves and I want to make this other point to show the ridiculous nature of their logic. If you are a juror on a trial you dont need to touch the murder weopon, you dont need to see the murder, you dont have to have video of the murder in order for you to use evidence to make a conviction. This repeated comment that he hasnt directly seen or touched any vehicle automatically causes a need to disregard his knowledge. This isnt how logic and deductive reasoning works. It also isnt any real reason to dismiss any of what information he is bringing forward. There obviously is a bunch of evidence he has privately presented and the "Grand Jury" has decided that it is acceptable evidence ...and they moved forward to bring the "charges" to the public. Now we will wait as soon some of that evidence will absolutely be presented to the public for us to understand the truth of what he is saying. While you wait, if your an honest person interested in the truth....do not let the loud noise bad faith actors are making towards him and what he is claiming. Use logic and critical thinking skills. Why would some many put their jobs and reputation on the line for lies? Why has this been a reoccurring theme on the governments involvement over the decades if there wasnt something of substance to UFOs? And why would we dismiss someone who hasnt "seen" the body, burnish a detective who has interviewed first hand accounts, has collecting paper trails and communications, as well brought the "charges" privately and has been given the green light to move forward with the biggest story in all of human history?! I've seen UAPs so I'm not a person who is a believer or needs more proof. I've seen things that cannot possibly be human and more. Now for many who havent, just use real logic on these current events. Because if you do, the group trying to put gaslighting information on you wont be able to succeed. More is coming, nows the time time to start the process of digesting our new position in the cosmos and in reality.

2023.06.08 02:25 bonc826 Oahu, Maui, and BI Trip Report (5/23-6/5)
This was our first time in Hawaii, and given that we weren’t sure if we’d have the chance to come back in the future, we crammed as much in as possible. We’re a couple in our late 20s. Overall, we loved Oahu, liked the Big Island, and thought Maui was just okay. The main focuses of our trip were trying a lot of different foods, which we did and enjoyed most of, and taking in the beautiful nature Hawaii has to offer, which we did and enjoyed nearly all of. We enjoyed Oahu the most because it offered the most of everything and it was easy to get around. Maui got docked a few points mostly because of how much drive time was required to do most things and it definitely wouldn’t have been worth it if we hadn’t been able to use credit card points for our hotel. HVNP was the big highlight of the Big Island, and we enjoyed a majority of what we did. If we had the chance, we’d probably go back to see more of the BI. In general, we were expecting food to be way more expensive than it was (yay for not meeting expectations) but it was surprisingly difficult for us to find fruits to try besides pineapple, mango, and papaya (boo for not meeting expectations).
This is a reaaaaaally long trip report so I tried to organize it in a way that will allow people to just find their island of interest if they don’t want to read the whole thing. Each island has a bolded header and I put a heart (💜) by things that we absolutely loved and would likely do again and a star (🌟) by things that we really enjoyed doing as first time visitors but probably wouldn’t do again. Please feel free to ask any questions about stuff I didn’t go into detail about!
Oahu Overall Rating: 9/10 Hotel: Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach (mostly stayed here because of CC points and free breakfast. Breakfast would've been way better if there was fruit besides canned pineapple, toilet paper was awful for my bootyhole, and they have the slowest elevators known to man)
Day 0: Travel/arrival
- Landed in Honolulu around 7pm after a very long day of traveling. I wanted to get Marugame Udon for dinner but balked at the line. I had heard that the line moves fast, but we were way too tired to wait, so we got Kono’s instead. My bomber was a bit too salty and greasy, but my boyfriend loved his.
Day 1: Honolulu
- We started the day with Diamond Head. We had the 7-8am reservation, which was perfect, since it was super busy on our way down. 🌟
- I wanted to have lunch at Helena’s but they were unfortunately closed for the duration of the Oahu leg of our trip. Did not learn this until we got there (sign taped to the door), so definitely check their website if this is on your itinerary.
- Walked to Bishop Museum from Helena’s and walked around and had a very sad lunch at the Highway Inn there. The Bishop Museum was beautiful and there was lots to see and read. Chose to do this over Polynesian Cultural Center due to the PCC controversy with the Church of LDS.
- Saw the Iolani Palace and the King Kamehameha statue. Cool to see both, but we didn’t do the formal tour at Iolani Palace.
- Had dinner at Tonkatsu Tamafuji. This was hands down one of the best meals we had the entire trip. We weren’t able to get a reservation so we arrived at 3:30pm to join the waitlist (we were second or third) and were seated almost immediately when they opened for dinner. 💜
Day 2: North Shore
- Started the morning early with the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse trail. Super easy and got to see the sunrise at the top. We really liked this trail. 🌟
- Spent some time at Lanikai Beach and it was a nice beach to relax on
- Headed up to drive through Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden and the mountain ranges were stunning. 🌟
- Lunch at Da Bald Guy. It was good but nothing mindblowing. I wanted to try Ry’s Poke too, but they were closed for a few days. Again, learned from a sign on their window lol.
- We did the Ehukai Pillbox Hike and went past the first pillbox to see the second pillbox. The views from there were phenomenal. My poor feet were suffering a little and the downhill stretches were a bit scary at times, but it was worth it. 🌟
- We got an acai bowl from Haleiwa Bowls and it was so delicious and refreshing. 🌟
- Checked out the North Shore Macadamia Nut Company, North Shore Soap Factory🌟, and the Waialua Sugar Mill🌟. We got some souvenirs for family and even got a little tour at the sugar mill. Pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed these stops.
- Second lunch at Jenny’s Shrimp Truck. Good, but again, nothing mindblowing.
- Laniakea Beach was super crowded so we went to Papa’iloa Beach instead. Pretty and not crowded at all, and saw our first sea turtle here!
- We were pretty tired from the early morning so we decided to skip the last couple of things on our itinerary (Sunset Beach and Ted’s Bakery)
Day 3: Waikiki
- Started the day at KCC Farmers Market. We had mochi from Daizu Tei, banh mi from Pig and the Lady, and passion fruit cane juice (can’t remember the name of the stand). We also got a cup of a variety of cut fruit, which was pretty subpar and disappointing -- a majority of the fruit tasted unripe. 💜
- Lunch at Ono Seafood. It was good, but if I learned anything on this trip, I don’t like poke as much as I thought.
- Evening was spent at Kualoa Ranch for a friend’s wedding. What a beautiful venue!
Day 4: Waikiki
- Hung out on Waikiki Beach for a while before getting lunch at Marugame Udon. Udon was really tasty but I definitely didn’t need to get the tempura too. Extra points for the great value! 💜
- Wandered around International Marketplace but didn’t do any shopping
- Quick snack at Musubi Cafe. Good, but also thought that I’d like spam musubis more.
- Took a nap before getting dinner at Omakase by Aung. This was an amazing and delicious experience. The vibes were *chef’s kiss* 💜
Day 5: Waikiki
- Got coffee and some pastries from Kona Coffee b patisserie. Coffee was fine but the pastries were to die for. Waited in line for a while, so it’s probably good to go at a random time in the middle of the day rather than first thing in the morning 🌟/💜
- Headed over to the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites and went to the Battleship Missouri Memorial, Aviation Museum, and USS Arizona. Didn’t have time for the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum but if we could go back, we’d do that instead of the Aviation Museum. The Battleship Missouri Memorial was really cool and my WW2 buff boyfriend loved it. 🌟
- Wanted to get dinner at Maguro Brother, but was yet again met with a “we’re closed and will reopen on x date” sign. Went to Maguro Spot instead.
- We had shave ice at Island Vintage for dessert. We LOVED it and got one that had frozen yogurt in the center. I am dying to have it again. 💜
Maui Overall Rating: 7/10 Hotel: Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa (we walked down pretty much the entire 2 mile strip of resorts in Kaanapali and from the outside, I'd say that the Hyatt Regency was among the nicer resorts. However, we would never in a million years stay here if it weren't for CC points)
Day 6: Travel to Maui
- Flew to Maui in the AM and grabbed lunch at Thai Mee Up. Tasty! Unfortunately, we were there pretty early so most of the other trucks were closed. Checked out Costco too, because why not, and had to resist the urge to buy a million snacks.
- Went to the Iao Valley State Monument and did a few short trails there but the star of the day was the Waihe’e Ridge trail. It was probably the most challenging hike we did our entire trip, but it had the best views. It was unfortunately a bit cloudy at the top, but on the bright side, we didn’t have the sun beating down on our backs and were able to get pretty amazing views halfway up. 🌟
- Checked into our hotel before heading out for dinner at Star Noodle. This was another favorite dinner. It’s small plates/family style and while our waiter suggested starting with a noodle plate plus 2-3 other plates, we ended up ordering a second round of plates because everything we had was so good. 💜
Day 7: Haleakala
- The sunrise was breathtaking but I never want to do that drive in the dark ever again, even as a passenger. We left at 2:30am and arrived 30 minutes before sunrise and would suggest leaving even earlier to beat the tour buses. It was CROWDED. Did a few trails (Pa Ka’oao, Leleiwi Overlook, and the first half of Halemau’u) and headed back to the hotel for a much needed nap lol. 🌟
- On the way back, we grabbed a few snacks and poke from Foodland
- Explored Lahaina a little before going to the Old Lahaina Luau. The luau was enjoyable and the amount of food was insane. We didn’t love the food (our favorites were probably the apps and dessert), so because of that and the fact that we’re not big drinkers, it was a bit overpriced.
Day 8: Road to Hana
- Not to be all poo-poo about it but both of us thought this was way too overrated. I’ve given my thoughts on some other threads, but there are scenic drives in northern Michigan that are way prettier than the Road to Hana. The only things worth stopping for were Waianapanapa State Park 🌟 and the Pipiwai trail 🌟 and maybe the Keanae Arboretum just to look at the rainbow eucalyptus trees up close and the roadside lava tube. Other than that, we were not impressed by the beaches or the waterfalls and it was exhausting. Oh, and unpopular opinion, but Aunty Sandy’s banana bread is so overrated.
- We had lunch in the middle at Braddah Hutts. It was very tasty but we definitely could’ve shared a plate. Dinner at Tin Roof was on the itinerary but we decided to skip because of how full we were from lunch.
Day 9: Resort Bumming
- Given how exhausting the previous day was, we just bummed by the pool all day and napped.
- We got dinner at Huihui, which exceeded our expectations and we watched the lovely sunset as we ate.
Day 10: Snorkeling
- We did a half-day snorkel tour with Sea Maui and it was a really great experience! We went to two spots and had breakfast, lunch, and drinks included. 💜
- Took a much needed nap before going to Down the Hatch for dinner. We weren’t super hungry so we just shared an appetizer and entree and got shave ice at Ululani’s afterwards. Both were good but we liked the Island Vintage shave ice better than Ululani’s.
Big Island Overall Rating: 8/10 Hotel: Orchid Tree B&B (I wanted to gatekeep this but it was too cute of a B&B to not share. The suite we got was clean and comfortable and the simple breakfast in the morning was great. The host cut fresh fruit from their yard for us) 💜
Day 11: Travel/HVNP
- Traveled to the Big Island early in the morning. We stopped by Greenwell Farms for coffee beans to take home, but didn’t have time for a free tour. The beans were a bit pricey but oh well, it’s a souvenir for family and it was 100% Kona coffee.
- We did a farm tour at Kuaiwi Farm and it was fun! We had a bit of a weird group but the owners were great and gave samples of a variety of things to try. 🌟
- Lunch at Shaka Tacoz was delicious. I was in dire need of some vegetables, so I ordered a salad and it was HUGE. I’ve never had such a filling salad.
- We were going to check out the green sand beach but decided against it and headed to HVNP instead. We were able to fit in the Devastation Trail, steam vents, sulphur banks, Kilauea Overlook, and the Thurston Lava Tube. This really freed up our second day at the park and everything was very cool. 🌟
- We got ramen at Tetsumen in Hilo for dinner and it was a pleasant surprise! It was a great way to end the cold and rainy day. 🌟
Day 12: HVNP/Travel
- Since we had time for HVNP the previous day, we only did the Kilauea Iki trail which was also really cool. We were impressed and amazed by HVNP. 🌟
- We went back to Hilo to check out the farmers market and this was possibly the most disappointing part of our short visit to the BI. Despite being warned during the farm tour the day prior, I wanted to try white pineapple before leaving and was convinced by the vendor that I purchased from that the pineapples were ripe. We had been warned during the farm tour that many vendors at farmers markets will lie and sell unripe fruit. So I ended up spending over $20 on an unripe white pineapple that made my tongue burn. I made myself eat probably 1/3 of it before I gave up and threw it out. I also purchased a mountain apple that was also definitely not ripe and I couldn’t eat more than the one bite I took. Lesson learned, I suppose.
- We stopped by Rainbow Falls (had time to kill) and it was alright.
- We had a late lunch at Cafe 100 and Ken’s House of Pancakes (also alright) before our long trip home.

2023.06.07 11:40 eqinsuranceservice Protecting Your Home and Peace of Mind: Earthquake Home Insurance in California
| Introduction California, known for its stunning coastline, thriving cities, and beautiful landscapes, is also a state prone to seismic activity. With its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, earthquakes are a natural occurrence that residents need to be prepared for. In the face of potential devastation, it is crucial for homeowners in California to understand the importance of earthquake home insurance. This article aims to shed light on earthquake home insurance in California, its significance, and the factors to consider when obtaining coverage. Protecting Your Home Understanding Earthquake Home Insurance Earthquake home insurance, also known as earthquake insurance or seismic coverage, is a specialized form of insurance designed to protect homeowners from financial loss resulting from earthquake damage. Unlike standard homeowner's insurance policies, earthquake insurance specifically addresses the unique risks associated with seismic events. Coverage and Benefits Earthquake insurance typically covers structural damage to your home, as well as damage to personal belongings caused by an earthquake. Additionally, it can provide coverage for additional living expenses if your home becomes uninhabitable due to earthquake damage, such as temporary housing and food expenses. The coverage limit and deductible for earthquake insurance policies can vary widely. It's essential to evaluate your needs and select coverage that adequately protects your home and possessions. Some policies may also offer optional endorsements to cover specific items or structures, such as swimming pools, detached garages, or outbuildings. Factors to Consider 1. Risk Assessment: California is a vast state with varying levels of seismic activity. The proximity to fault lines, historical earthquake data, and geological assessments of the region can help determine the risk level for your property. Evaluating the potential risk in your area is crucial in deciding the coverage you require. 2. Building Type: The construction and structural integrity of your home play a significant role in determining your insurance needs. Older homes, for example, may require additional coverage due to potential vulnerabilities. Retrofitting measures, such as bolting, bracing, or reinforcing your home's foundation, can also impact your insurance rates. 3. Coverage Limits and Deductibles: It is essential to carefully review the coverage limits and deductibles offered by different insurance providers. Consider the replacement value of your home and possessions to determine the appropriate coverage amount. Be mindful of deductibles as well, as they represent the amount you would need to pay out of pocket before insurance coverage kicks in. Earthquake Home Insurance in California 4. Cost vs. Benefit: Assessing the cost of earthquake insurance against the potential benefits is crucial. Compare the premium costs with the estimated cost of rebuilding or repairing your home in the event of an earthquake. Keep in mind that insurance costs can vary based on factors such as location, construction type, and coverage limits. 5. Exclusions and Limitations: Like any insurance policy, earthquake insurance also has exclusions and limitations. It's crucial to understand what is covered and what is not. For instance, some policies may not cover landslides or damage resulting from other earth movements. Reviewing policy details and asking questions to insurance providers can help clarify any uncertainties. Conclusion Given California's high seismic activity, protecting your home and belongings with earthquake insurance is a prudent decision. Earthquakes can strike without warning, leaving behind a trail of destruction and financial burden. With earthquake home insurance, you can gain peace of mind, knowing that you are financially safeguarded against potential losses. When considering earthquake insurance in California, it's crucial to assess the risk level in your area, understand your coverage needs, and carefully compare policies from different insurance providers. By taking proactive measures and securing earthquake home insurance, you can ensure that your home and your family's well-being are protected in the event of a seismic event. submitted by eqinsuranceservice to u/eqinsuranceservice [link] [comments] |
