dear diary: the Omni colony at cycle 2500

2023.06.11 00:33 MellowTigger dear diary: the Omni colony at cycle 2500

dear diary: the Omni colony at cycle 2500
I'm continuing my earlier thread (at cycle 350, cycle 700, and cycle 1250 ) about the "Omni" colony, in which I intend to collect all of the achievements, hence the name.
Planetoids 1 and 2 haven't needed much attention, which is good. On planetoid 3 (pictured below), I acquired gas grass seeds and used my carbon dioxide engine Hopper to bring them back home. I left the planetoid in good condition, pictured below. I got tired of waiting for carbon dioxide exhaled from my 1 dupe to refill the engines, so I started using a single coal generator to boost production of the gas. That's a trick I repeated on some other planetoids as I reached farther out from home. The extra time was useful, though, in building up this abandoned location more than others.
planetoid 3 with gassy moos
I had 2 dupes work on planetoid 4, where the temporal tear opener was located. I relied on algae deliveries to keep the air fresh at first, but I eventually switched to electrolyzers, since water resources were plentiful, but not infinite. I managed to tame an iron volcano. (Maybe my first iron one?) I used it more for the free electricity than for the iron. Still, though, I loaded up the iron in my Hopper spaceship when I brought both of them back home. I succeeded in opening the temporal tear. Later, I sent another dupe in a spare Hopper through the tear, just to complete that achievement. I lined the top of the space biome with steel bunker doors, but they didn't close fast enough to prevent significant damage. I never bothered with repairs, though. I hopped out of there and brought my dupes back home.
planetoid 4 with temporal tear opener
The planetoid with Experiment 52B is always interesting and "easy" to start. It's easy enough to ranch voles, to make barbeque to feed the experiment, to make resin. I realized soon, though, that the only perpetual source of oxygen on the planetoid was a Hot Polluted Oxygen Vent (emits at 500C), and it was buried under the lava biome. Argh! :(
I successfully tapped a lava area for the first time, but it included a significant accident. I didn't discover soon enough that my dupes were bringing 1400C resources from the mined lava tiles into the main area of the base. (Instead of using the storage bin in the steam area specifically for that purpose.) Once I realized that temperatures were going bad in the main base, I didn't have enough autosaves to restore to a time before the accident began. On an early retry, one of my dupes died to the heat. It was a tough 20 cycles, getting my base setup for better cooling while transporting the hot rocks back to the steam area. But I eventually succeeded on one of the retries, and the rest of the development was much easier.
Cooling the area around the vent sufficiently that I can build the necessary machines, however, is still an ongoing process. The polluted water on the planetoid has nearly all outgassed already, so I've been supplementing my air with algea at a single oxygen diffuser. As you can see in the picture below, the surrounding steam is down to "only" 700C (much better than the original 1400C) at its hottest point in the corner. I'll tame that area soon. Meanwhile, I've also succeeded in making isoresin for the very first time. I didn't know that resin outgassed huge amounts of steam, so I had to reload a few saves backward and try again. It's working fine now. You can see the isoresin chamber to the left of the steam area for the engines. I've been shipping the isoresin upwards for launching to my home planetoid. I expect to manufacture my first ever insulation and visco-gel soon!
planetoid 5 with resin, isoresin, and hot polluted oxygen vent
I also used hoppers to advance to other nearby planetoids. I stayed at them and built them sufficiently, just so I could refuel my carbon dioxide engine and hop to the next planetoid in sequence, studying whatever artifacts I found at each site. For the first time, I completed the Cosmic Archaeology achievement. For the first time, I completed all 3 main goals listed at each printing pod. I'm very happy with this progress.
I'm now down to just 4 incomplete achievements: GMO A-OK, Not 0K But Pretty Cool, That's Rad, and Mine The Gap. I'm already 70% complete for Mine The Gap, so I expect to complete it next. I'll write back after I've finally gotten all 4 achievements completed. Hopefully it will be sooner than cycle 5000! :)

2023.06.11 00:22 dopeyJaguar74000 Looking for a Mini Fridge? Here Are Some of the Best Ones to Buy in 2023

Hey Reddit, I'm in the market for a mini fridge and I've been doing some research on the best ones to buy in 2023. I thought I'd share my findings with you and see what you think.

A mini fridge is a small refrigerator that can fit in tight spaces and offer many benefits. Some of the benefits of a mini fridge are:

- Space saving: A mini fridge can fit under your desk, on your countertop, or in your closet. You can use it to store snacks, beverages, leftovers, or even cosmetics. A mini fridge can help you save space and declutter your kitchen or room.
- Portability: A mini fridge is easy to move around and transport. You can take it with you when you travel, relocate, or go camping. Some mini fridges are designed to work with car adapters, so you can plug them into your vehicle and enjoy cold drinks on the road.
- Convenience: A mini fridge can make your life easier by providing you with quick access to food and drinks. You don't have to go to the kitchen or the vending machine every time you feel hungry or thirsty. You can also use a mini fridge to store food that you don't want to share with others or that needs special temperature control.
- Energy efficiency: A mini fridge consumes less electricity than a full-sized refrigerator because it has a smaller capacity and a simpler design. A mini fridge can help you save money on your utility bills and reduce your carbon footprint.
- Extra storage: A mini fridge can supplement your main refrigerator by providing extra space for food and drinks. You can use a mini fridge to store items that you need more frequently or that you want to keep separate from the rest of your groceries. A mini fridge can also come in handy when you have guests over or when you host a party.
- Affordability: A mini fridge is cheaper than a regular refrigerator because it has fewer features and components. You can find a mini fridge that suits your budget and needs without breaking the bank.
- Aesthetic value: A mini fridge can add some style and personality to your space. You can choose a mini fridge that matches your decor or expresses your taste. Some mini fridges have retro designs, colorful finishes, or unique shapes that can make them stand out.

How to Choose the Best Mini Fridge for Your Needs

With so many options available on the market, how do you pick the best mini fridge for your needs? Here are some factors to consider:

- Size: The size of the mini fridge depends on how much space you have and how much food and drinks you want to store. Mini fridges come in different sizes, ranging from 1.1 cubic feet to 4.4 cubic feet. The smaller ones are ideal for storing a few cans or bottles, while the larger ones can accommodate more items and even have separate freezer compartments.
- Features: The features of the mini fridge depend on what functions you want it to perform and how convenient you want it to be. Some features to look for are adjustable shelves, reversible doors, interior lights, temperature controls, defrost options, door bins, crisper drawers, ice makers, and locks.
- Style: The style of the mini fridge depends on your personal preference and the look of your space. Some styles to choose from are freestanding, built-in, double-door, single-door, retro, modern, stainless steel, black, white, red, blue, etc.

2023.06.10 21:44 Jayy8Bit Blender 3.4 Extremely Slow, New Install, New PC

As the title says, Blender is extremely slow. Even if I just have a default cube, every time I make a change, the program freezes for a few seconds to a few minutes. I've tried a fresh install, even tried installing on another HD. Same issue. Disabled add-ons as well and still have the same issue. I saw somewhere about an OpenGL file in the install directory that causes issues, but I do not see that file. Any advice?

2023.06.10 19:34 le_avx <600€, replace 10+ y/o system, mostly office/multimedia, no gaming

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
<=600€
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Before June 30th.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
PC-Parts, maybe including a tower case if current (Sharkoon M25) does no longer fit. So: Mobo, CPU+Fan, RAM, GPU, maybe power supply if current does not work out(currently bequiet!Pure Power 11 500W CM). For the time being, existing monitors, hdds and inputs can be (re)used.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Germany
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Crucial MX500 SSD, Samsung 2TB HDDs, 2x HP 23", 1x Hisense 4k, basic cherry keyboard, Logitech MX Master 2, 3DConnexion SpacePilot Pro.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
1G+ ethernet, bluetooth would be nice to have, WiFi optional. Drivers for Linux working out of the box would be strongly prefered.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
If existing case (Sharkoon M25) can't be reused, MidiTower or smaller is prefered. Clean front (no optical media needed), single color, no RGB, no light indicators (or able to turn them off/not connect them), better blocky than curvy, better sturdy than light.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
No Windows license needed.
Extra info or particulars:
Current system is a 10+ year old Intel i7-920 with 18gb RAM, GTX 960 4GB OC.
Goal of the system is to not annoy me while doing work in front of it, as in sluggish UIs, constantly taking 10s+ for small things. For longer computational tasks like rendering a video, it's fine if it takes 2 instead of 1 hour as I will be doing something else in the meantime anyhow.
Thanks for your inputs!

2023.06.10 19:01 eeeeeu Moradaya Rise

"Immortal Spirits of Fate, you who weave destiny, you who are my greatest muse and have spun countless stories in my ears, do not sit in idle silence toward me now. Sing to me of the birth of the Moradaya who came here from those mountainous lands of yore. May my words be true and my tongue possess the skill to utter the tale you speak into me without fault."
—An invocation to the spirits. Similar words are commonly spoken by storytellers in pursuit of favor from those who dictate the webs of fate.
As the cold wind howls through the valleys between that fractured piece of the Alpide belt born of the Paleogene in times long passed and nestled between two seas split by the crushing power of the advancing Arabian plate, a band traveling south and east on the backs of short stocky horses orients themselves against the rising sun hidden behind jagged peaks on the horizon which cut the sky like the serration on teeth of ocean sharks these migrants will never encounter, escape from this desolate winter landscape the one thing on their minds. They are Anyana, Iranic peoples whose ancestors roamed the steppes past the great mountains to the north where their distant cousins still drive livestock across a great sea of grass so wide and expansive it is hard for them to imagine both the land there and here in these claustrophobic ravines and gullies wrought by tectonic chaos belong to the same world. They do.
The Anyana abandoned such a pastoralist way of life when they migrated south along the coast of the Black Sea, known to them as Banga Marea, the Great Sea, which was vaster than any their ancestors before them had ever beheld, and into the lowlands between the Greater and Lesser Caucasus where rivers flow west into that massive body of water and the land is lush and fertile for farming. But this land of plenty where it seems the divines had tried their hand at crafting a paradise was not to be the home of the Moradaya. The Anyana who settled in these lands, which were at that time home to a population of Colchic Proto-Kartvelians, enslaved and intermingled with these local peoples from the coast to as far east as those who later formed the Kingdom of Asmanakashra, but many more of their brethren found no place in the small space of these lowlands, cramped as they were after the arrival of a lurch of people pouring inward as if the levy of the Greater Caucasus which once separated two worlds alien to one another had burst, and instead chose to push onward into the mountains to the south, spreading in all directions and hunting for whatever small abundances might be found in their alpine surroundings.
Massifs rise from underfoot across the plateau of the Armenian Highlands where Anyan has become the dominant culture and language, but divisions have already formed in this people. Wars were fought. Battles raged. Subjugation. The harsh topography of these lands and divisions between those original tribes who made the journey south drive the Anyana apart and erode their united identity like rivers splitting from one source in a delta before rushing out to sea, quickened by the absorption of local people's ways of life in the disparate and nascent polities forming among their culture. Some of the tribes have become wary of one another, others hostile and others more simply apathetic toward the Anyana living elsewhere in the plateau where even a few miles distance divided by a range of peaks can feel a world away.
The tribe Moradaya trace their lineage to a number of deva, beings akin to spirits or gods, the stories of their genesis passed down through the generations by oral recital and never received by the youth in quite the same manner or meaning each telling. Those travelers journeying across the Lesser Caucasus have heard the myths of their tribe’s origins many times, so often each might recite the tales from memory, as they did in the company of one another as solace for their otherwise pitiful position in a false remembrance of their greater past. The content of those myths is for another time than this. Their tribe has yet to find a home where they might permanently achieve peaceability and rest. For years they have searched, living scattered about Anyan lands, but this will soon be no more.
The band of men and women and children with their horses and all the belongings they managed to pack for the journey set their ambitions on the valley where meets a moot of all the Moradaya. For too long they have gone without a chieftain holding any true vision, but with the death of Small Vanga, deva bless his spirit, comes an opportunity to appoint a new ruler, one who might lead them to the home of which they have long dreamt. The winter journey for them has been grueling, but their ways demand a new chieftain be elected as soon as all the clan chiefs are able to convene. In that band marching beneath the slopes and now in the belly of a ravine, scrawny trees twisting and fighting each other for the scant light of the sun that makes it down all the way, Skoda goes with his family and a small number of his most trusted men to represent his clan, the Donsudra, and their wishes at the moot.
All free men are welcome to participate in the moot and the election of a new chieftain, but the clan chiefs are shouldered with the extra responsibilities of negotiating the affair and preventing strife at the results of the tribe’s decision. Skoda’s young age once made other chiefs wary of his abilities to lead, but since then he proved himself to be a skilled warrior and therefore, in their eyes, a leader in his campaigns against the Urartians, the native inhabitants of this alpine plateau, and many favor him to become the new chieftain.
After weeks of travel through winding mountain passes, Skoda and their band reach the banks of Soinya Marea, Lake Sevan, the water frozen therein beginning to thaw as spring emerges. Thin trees with leaves stripped and dead bushes and lichen growing on rocky outcroppings dot the hilly landscape. Smoke rises in the distance. Others from Moradaya had already arrived and created a camp where they weathered the remains of the cold season waiting to elect the new chieftain. Skoda’s band sets up their own tents in the disorganized array of other temporary homes along a network of mud pounded into the ground by feet of people buzzing around the camp. Tired from their journey, he rests.
They are some of the last to arrive, and soon after making their place all the clan chiefs are present on those banks, and the moot is called. They meet at the debouch of a stream snaking down to the idle water along an escarpment and flowing inside, the shallow depths gurgling over a bed of rocks. Men of other kinds have trodden these lands for hundreds of thousands of years since the age of Acheulean stone, and now rills formed in the mud by surface water from the melting snow are trampled underfoot as they gather into a haphazard circle, a little empty space in the center.
Clans Donsudra, Ibera, Kudogre, Paraba, Velun and Festuda all convene here. Besides Skoda, other favorites for chieftain are Oruges, son of the late Small Vanga, and Ekpuda, the wise and elderly leader of the Paraba. The law speaker initiates the day, and the shaman says a prayer and performs a ritual, and the thing begins. Oruges boasts of his own grandeur, standing in the center of the crowd who send cheers and jeers alike his way.
"He should be chieftain!"
"Someone older like Ekpuda ought to be in charge!"
"His father led us to ruin, and he'll do the same!"
They argue for some time with no resolution.
"Quiet, children." Ekpuda waves a single hand in the air, and soon all are silent. "I am too old to lead. That job belongs to those whose lives are still more ahead than behind them."
A murmur grows in the crowd.
"But, I must admit, I doubt Oruges' abilities as a leader, even if I respected his father."
A roar. Everyone was up in arms and yelling.
"I don't see anyone better!"
"Vanga's spawn is too weak!"
"Who else will be chieftain?"
Skoda walks to the center, the walls of which now undulate in the mass of upset bodies. "I will lead us."
After much deliberation and arguing, Skoda is narrowly elected as Moradaya's new chieftain, the first ever from clan Donsudra. He sets his mind on the task of finding his people a land on which they may grow and prosper, and these thoughts occupy every still moment for over a year until an opportunity presents itself.
The Urartian kingdom of Ushnu to the south had fallen into a state of civil war over the rights of inheritance pertaining to their king, and Skoda decides to take the opportunity and strike.
The war effort on part of the Moradaya is successful, and they drive out the rulers of Ushnu, known to them as Ošneš, and take over the land with their armies. They expand east into the territory of tribes Urartian and Iranian alike and settle them as their own.
Ošneš rests west of the endorheic lake of brine, Unya Marea, or Lake Urmia as it might be known to us. Fed by rivers, the lake lets loose none of its water except in evaporation, a draconic beast hoarding its wealth for itself. A place of stagnancy, though much life calls the lands around home. There exist many plots of arable terrain here, and it seems to all Moradaya, Skoda first of all, a good place to settle. To the east of this great salt pond is a river valley sandwiched by mountains north and the stratovolcano which looms over all therein and will soon become a place of great spiritual power south. Here, the Moradaya found a city, that of Majadaragand, the City of the Middle Valley.
For some time, perhaps a century or so, the Moradaya have called these lands home. The Urartians of the old kingdom of Ushnu still do so too, though they are in the process of being subsumed into Anyan ways of life, an integration which lends to the growing distinction between Moradaya and other Anyana. The real history of their conquests merges with legend, birthing new myths among the tribe's members now growing fat off the land. This is how the Moradaya came into their home.
Name: Moradaya
Gov't Type: Sedentary
Techs: Iron Age, Horse domestication, Spoked Wheel

2023.06.10 17:22 Whytrhyno [H] Painted Gloomspite Gitz [W] Paypal, Trades [Loc]VA, USA

Hello,
Looking to clear space for more projects and hoping to send the gitz off to a better home than a storage case.
Almost everything is painted, there are resin prints and plastic kits, I will identify what is what. Most things are magnetized that are painted, minus 4 resin herders and the shrine.
Verification: https://imgur.com/a/6tFLcag
Asking $300 (OBO) shipped for everything. Can potentially split resin off, as well, $250 for the plastic portion. I am also looking for Wraithlords, NOS preferred or close to it for posing and any other Eldar, minus aspects. Feel free to hit me up with any other offers or questions.
- 12 Rockgut Troggoths
- 10 Squigs w/ 2 herders
- 10 Bounderz (not painted)

2023.06.10 17:05 WolverineOdd3113 Sketchup vs Revit

um hi sorry I don't know where else to ask this, so basically I play this game called the sims 4 and really enjoy building and designing floorplans and infrastructure, but its very limited in the fact you only have fixed wall widths, heights, lengths, and other stuff is out of control so you can't really do anything precise, for example, you cannot mock up your own home to an exact scale to see how different renovations/extensions would fit or rearranging bedrooms and offices etc. so everything looks slightly off
after a quick google apparently sketch-up and Autodesk REVIt are highly recommended,
given the fact I'm using a base model M1 MacBook Air 2020, which one is less likely to completely destroy my laptop and is also "userfriendly"
also after watching some videos on yt I've seen that most of these builds are black and white, can the colours/backgrounds/textures be changed in one of these programs to create pretty renders? which one would be more realistic/userfriendly/intuitive?
can either of these be downloaded and used offline? I'm often on the go and in places without wifi so that would be a big plus

sorry I really know that this is superrrrrr noob behaviour but I legit don't know anything else

if by any chance you know a better subreddit for this please let me know so I can post this there thanks.

I do this more for hobbies sake, not planning on taking any college courses or switching my career from nursing so yeah, theres that, but I like to think of myself as an aspiring home diy-er, I'm mainly gonna use this to plan out enclosing/building walls around my house's garage/open air shaded carpark to turn into a multipurpose room, doubles as a home gym and extra storage,
if that goes well then ill upgrade to my life goal, building a glorified shed/garden room so I can have an office space overlooking my backyard garden and get some alone time from the family.

2023.06.10 13:48 dilroopgill Some sort of clan hall or player housing would be nice

Wouldn't care if it's instanced and through portals, some sort of extra storage and meeting space would be nice. Could even do the thing where they display the players home who has the most cosmetic value, great opportunity to get more money off of people for them. Not expecting anything crazy, just adds to my immersion. Could let players add their own forge and stations for crafting after completing certain quests for npcs and paying a lot of gold. Have the house be server wide for all alts allowing slightly faster progression through not having to run around town.

2023.06.10 12:06 cursus46 First time builder - advice on part selection

Hi everyone,
I've been wanting to build a PC for YEARS, and I finally feel it's time for that. It's going to be my first self-built PC, and I have some questions regarding my part choices.

A little background about me first:

I am not a hardcore gamer. At least I wasn't, since my laptops and desktops could barely achieve more than 25fps at lowest settings. Here is a list of games I see myself playing in the short term:
I would also like to play The Elder Scrolls 6 and GTA 6 whenever they come out.
As for the resolution - I do not currently have a 1440p monitor, but might upgrade to that in a year or two.
Additionally, I daily drive Linux, so I would like to go with AMD GPUs. But I am not against dual booting to Windows if I need to game

The PC

PCPartPicker Part List
Type Item Price
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor €245
Motherboard MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI Micro ATX AM5 Motherboard €180
Memory Kingston FURY Beast 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR5-5600 CL36 Memory €73
Storage Western Digital Black SN770 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive €62
Storage Seagate IronWolf Pro NAS 4 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive €0 (already own)
Storage Seagate IronWolf Pro NAS 4 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive €0 (already own)
Video Card MSI MECH 2X CLASSIC OC Radeon RX 7600 8 GB Video Card €306
Case Asus Prime AP201 MicroATX Mini Tower Case €84
Power Supply Cooler Master V550 SFX GOLD 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply €84
Total - €~1000

The questions

  1. Is 16GB RAM enough for gaming? On my laptop I have 16GB RAM and have not encountered any problems, but I do not game much.
  2. What speed RAM should I get? I know that 6000MHz is what everyone recommends for high-end, but is that essential? Could I be okay with cheaper 5600MHz set?
  3. Should I spend about 50€ more for an RX 6700 XT? Sure, it has 12GB VRAM, but RX 7600 is also a new-gen product and seems to be good at 1080p gaming.
  4. I am planning to use the stock CPU cooler. Also I plan to get 3 more 120mm fans (the case already comes with one) and put them in this configuration - 1 fan at the bottom as intake, 1 fan at the back as intake, 2 fans at the top as exhaust. Is this a good configuration? Or should I not even bother with getting the extra fans? P.s. the whole case is meshed, and the PSU is at the front of the case
Thank you in advance.

2023.06.10 09:10 Mista425 Living Room PC with Valve Index attached

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Using it for multimedia and VR games such as Half Life Alyx, and Beatsaber
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$1500-2000
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Within a week
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
OS
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
California (San Francisco Bay Area)
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Nope, the current Living Room PC has a CPU from almost 7-8 years ago and a 970.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No, just want to install it and forget it.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Space to store songs for Beatsaber.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Preferably something not too big that sticks out in a living room probably mid tower or smaller. Definitely want a case that is intuitive and easy to build in.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes, no preference
Extra info Honestly not trying to spend crazy amounts of money on this, I really want something that can run my Valve Index doesn't need crazy fast storage just needs good amount like 1 tb is probably enough.

2023.06.10 04:38 kkaavvbb What to do first? Clean / move / paint / etc?

I offered “as-is where-is” & pretty sure that’s what got me where I’m at. Appraisal & inspection went fine. Also, sorry this is stupidly dumb long…
TLDR: what would you do first?
Move your stuff in, stick everything in garage, storage room & hardwood floor rooms & then do carpet cleaning & painting (saves $300 on storage charges POD & local small unit). But eat the extra charges of paint, carpet cleaner, supplies. But we’re saving that $300 which can go towards carpet & paint.
OR
Leave the stuff in storage while we carpet clean & paint. Pay the $400 storage fees. And pay for carpet cleaning & paint in addition to storage fees.
(I personally feel like one of them is the OBVIOUS choice but we’re arguing about it) ———————————————————
Why are we at ends here?
So, the condo had a dog in it. Not a big deal, most of first floor is hardwood, 3 rooms are carpeted (all 3 bedrooms - 2 downstairs, 1 upstairs).
The house smells like dog. Not like wet dog or anything, just dog. (We don’t currently have pets & it’s not like dog-pee smell or anything, just a dog lived there… and ate a lot of door jambs, lol).
Now, we’re between places (living at sister in laws for little over a month now). So all of our stuff is in a POD storage thing at the POD location, so I’m paying $350/mo for storage there, and I’m paying $50/mo for a small storage unit that’s local so we’re not crowding sister in law.
Husband & I can’t decide what to do first. Well, I can but he disagrees.
My choice :
The storage & POD will get charged on 6/20. We’re closing 6/15. So, if all goes according to plan, next weekend I can get the pod delivered 6/16 or 6/17 and stuff out of storage unit & save $300 total (it costs $100 total to drop off/pick up the pod - so $400 saving minus $100 = $300 in case you cared about math….). We have a garage & a large storage unit on ground floor. Our condo is on 3&4th floor. I’d rather not move stuff into the garage and storage room just cause I don’t want to move this shit again. I said, we can move our stuff in - we have good furniture but not nearly enough to fill the place like we did in our rental. We’re getting almost 1,000 more Sq ft. So there’s plenty of space to maneuver around furniture & get these things done with our stuff in.
His choice :
Husband wants to immediately Stanley steamer the carpets & paint. Which would delay the POD & storage unit, AND add the additional costs of carpet cleaner & paint (… and supplies). So that’s $400 + carpet cleaning + paint = $$$ - he doesn’t care. Oh, and somewhere in there he wants to rent a moving van for our stuff up here and move it down there…. (Even though we have 2 decent sized SUVs that we used to move in with his sister with our necessities)
I know he wants to just get in there. But again, carpet cleaning can take 1-2 days (pre-treat, shampoo, go over it again, drying). Painting can take…. God knows how long sometimes & the walls are already beige / tan so I don’t see why we need to paint a basic color except to just get rid of dog smell but we’ll be painting it again when we decide where’s what going and the sort. We have a 9 year old, who I know is super excited to pick out her paint colors & we’ll have 3 bedrooms, 2 staircases, 3 bathrooms & the normal rooms. Sooo a lot of painting. Husband had an accident few years back & between cleaning carpets & painting & moving furniture again, he’s going to be a total asshole in pain.
I was hoping to get 1-2 guys to help move the big stuff to avoid husband having a pain-episode especially since it’s 3&4 floors up.
I know he isn’t thinking logically about the time line or money or pain or the fact that we will only be 1.5hrs away from where we are now, so it’s not a huge rush to get our stuff out of his sisters basement. He wants to get in there ASAP but also delay getting in there to get rid of the dog smell.
My compromise was the following : - deliver the pod on 6/16 or 6/17. - spend 6/16 putting baking soda (or the weird carpet smelly stuff?) on the carpets, leave it & vacuum hours later. - rent a carpet cleaner & shampoo carpets 6/17, since no carpet is on way in/out, we can move stuff in to the hard floor rooms while carpet dries. - after carpets dry, we can move all the furniture to carpeted rooms & polish up the beautiful hardwood floors. - spray the walls with a vinegar spray & clean to get rid of the surface area dog smell - painting can happen later when we figure out where everything is going.
Now, the last kick is - we aren’t married, we’ve just been together for so long it’s basically married at this point. He’s now being a butt because he’s technically my dependent and I am the one actually buying the condo & it’s all in my name & all the money we have is from me working. So it’s “my” money even though I don’t see it that way but he does (& he loves spending money, which is fine - within reason - and he buys basically whatever he wants whenever as the bank is originally his but now joint. I do have 2 other accounts he is not on but since I handle finances & bills, I keep separate accounts to make my life easier. When he’s spending too much - he never looks at the account - I simply tell him to stop buying stuff. Now, he shops because I HATE to, & I also just hate spending money, lol) - we totally do not have a gender norm family. I work (going to be fully remote now) so I also need a work station set up before 6/20 plus the utilities set up. He cooks & does most childcare.
Is my compromise not fair? Any one have any other ideas? I don’t want to steamroll what he wants but he’s also very rash with his decisions & even though I have plenty of PTO (unlimited even), I’d like to be able to have a smooth transition from hybrid to fully remote.
Also, we’re not rich or anything, so I don’t want to spend tons of money after that down payment.
Help! Am I missing common sense somewhere?

2023.06.10 04:34 arlo618 Going to Japan using Amex points

I am new to using/transferring points for airline tickets. I have booked in the past through the Amex portal but the flights I'm looking for seem very high through the portal, about 4.8 million points. We are looking to travel to Japan, 2 adults and 2 kids (9 and 7 yo), prefer business class, with dates 7/1-7/13, dates are a little flexible by a couple days, but not weeks. We are located in Knoxville, TN, but willing to go to nearby locations such as Nashville or Atlanta if it made much difference, from my searching it does not seem to matter. Also, looking at using points just for the long haul flight to Japan from Chicago/DenveLA... and will just pay for the flight from Knoxville, that also hasn't seemed to really make a difference. We have plenty of Amex points 3 million+, but I can't find any award/mile flights available through any of Amex partners. ANA has some award flights on waitlist, but from what I've read those are very unlikely.
The best I can come up with is United flights that will cost about 1.6 million United miles. If we transfer 1m amex points to bonvoy, it will convert to 1.5m bonvoy points, which we can then transfer to United for 500,000 miles. United ad bonvoy also have a special that you get an extra 10,000 for every 60,000, so that's an extra 250,000 points. So I'd be converting 1m amex to 750k united miles.
Does this seem like a reasonable plan or is there something else I should be looking at doing? Thanks for any help

2023.06.10 04:11 ShulkerBabe Welcome to Mars commander!

Here is what you need to know…
Know your resources:
Metal: - Can be collected from surface early on with RC Transporters (there is generally a lot, Meteor mission can bring more) - Mainly used on life support maintenance, solar panel building and maintenance (So, being in low metal after a dust storm is not a good idea.), and dome building. Will also be in building costs of most buildings. - Mohole (late tech of robotics tree) creates infinite - Used to crate machine parts
Concrete: - Mainly used on in dome building maintenance and building, and dome building. Will also be in building costs of most buildings. - Can be mined without colonists - Becomes a problem in late game which can be solved by Waste Rock Processing + The Excavator (late tech of robotics tree, infinite concrete)
Rare Metal: - Most of the time primary income source (only other alternatives are Tourism, research, SETI Satellite, sponsor specific buildings and TV studios which are generally harder to profit from early game), so it’s generally a good idea to start near one. - Used to create electronics - Mohole (late tech of robotics tree) creates infinite
Polymer: - Mainly used on dome building and maintenance, energy storage maintenance, and building updates - Can be created infinitely with fuel and water, (ie. only water) as a source - Can generally be traded with rivals for basic resources, even in early game (not too early) - Art store (and art workshop) consumes them, not a good idea early game unless you know what you are doing
Machine Parts: - Mainly used on extractor, wind turbine, factory building and maintenance, and factory upgrades - Most of the time you’ll need a lot in early game, can become pitfall of a colony easily so always make sure you can afford it - Biorobotic workshop consumes them
Electronics: - Mainly used in research, education, some advance buildings for building cost and maintenance, and factory upgrades - Hardest to produce as it requires a lot of workers - Electronic store (and VR workshop) consumes them, not a good idea early game full stop! Build a casino if you must make your gamers and scientists happy.
Energy: - That Striling in your default rocket setup is EXPENSIVE, metal is free, and not everything needs to work on night shift - Wind Turbines worth the machine part cost (especially when high elevation), just need to make sure you can afford it - Too much solar eats metal - Storage requirement depends on building you use, clustering is a bad idea (because meteors) - Energy transfers from building to building, not every building needs to touch a cable - Long cables leak a lot and it costs metal to fix
Oxygen and Water: - Life support storage needs to be right beside your dome, minimal pipes - Especially in high disaster maps at least 5 sols worth storage is a good idea - Clustering is a bad idea (because meteors) - Never trust a water node, they will run out; placing a Moisture Vaporator at pipe entrances of a dome is a good idea for keeping them longer and be ready once they run out - Long pipes leak a lot and it costs metal to fix
Know your disasters:
Meteor: - Brings metal, polymer and research - Will destroy all resources in the depot if strike on a universal depot with fuel in it - Can destroy your Mohole (yeah, that was fun) - Can be happening some section of the map you don’t care or on top of your most populated area
Sand storm: - You need life support (and energy if solar) storage
Cold wave: - You need to invest on energy production - Looks beautiful - You can turn off Subsurface Heaters when not needed, but make sure they start running before the cold wave or you might not be able (as it will need extra power to start) to and make sure you remember it’s energy and water need
Dust devil: - They are annoying - Waste rock storage on their ways stops them
Know your Colonists:
https://survivingmars.paradoxwikis.com/Colonists
Comfort: - Each specialization has their interests - Some traits has their interests - Each service build satisfies some interests - Colonist won’t visit a building if it does not satisfy one of their interests - Which interest they will want to satisfy is random - When they will select to satisfy their interest is also random, can be during night shift so it’s a good idea to run service buildings for all shifts - They will prefer the highest comfort building that will satisfy their selected interest (so for social they won’t go to the gym if there are available places in dinner as an example) - They will only get comfort ➕ from building lower then their current comfort, this includes homes (so if colonist comfort is 60 they will not get comfort ➕ from amphitheater - They will get comfort ➖ if they can not satisfy their selected interest - Passages ➖10 lowers the comfort the building is set to (so 55 comfort amphitheater in next dome is actually 45) - You need over 70 comfort to get growing Martian born colony, even if birth limit is lowered to 55 - You only need playgrounds to keep kids happy
Sanity: - Medical buildings provide sanity in each visit (bonus depends one worker performance) - Colonists won’t go to medical buildings until really low sanity (unless modes) - Night shift, hard work, out side work, and disasters lower sanity (last two can be eliminated for Martian born with Martianborn Resilience and Martianborn Strength research late in social tree)
Morale: - Gets effected from all stats and some story bits - Effects worker performance - Low morale causes renegades
Health: - Not an issue when you have medical buildings
Age: - Bringing middle aged colonists might mean they only work for couple of sols before becoming seniors
Know your filters: - 👍 Attracts that type of colonist - 👎 Refuses / kicks out that type of colonist - ❗️ Attracts that type of colonist even if they have trait 👎 - Filters only work when there is another dome with living space that would accept that colonist - Two different domes 👍ing same trait doesn’t work well

2023.06.10 02:43 lurkingbro Small Hope Design Challenge

So out of boredom and waiting for the next patch to come out of testing, I decided to play with the Small hope ship design. I wanted to figure out what the most capable ship I could fit in the original footprint. Every time I played it, I always expanded out instead of making the hard choices.
https://prnt.sc/pLmB51OUY2AQ (apologies for the link, I don't have an Imgur account)
I am very happy with my design, here are some highlights.
The Good: 1) stayed within the original footprint 2) quality sleep and leisure space 3) Built with 4 crew intended to operate it. I squeezed in 4 hypersleep pods (This was very annoying). One quality bedroom with 4 shifts sharing. An extra set of bunk beds should i need to rest extra crew. 4) Incorporated as many safety features as i could. Main power plant is in a walled off compartment, to minimize fire and vacuum risks. Redundant life support in separate compartments. Navigation in a small compartment with extra paths to ensure access. One solar panel for desperate times. 5) Small shield with console, and weapon console with turret. She wont win any fights, nor does she have a jammer. She can run though.
For economy i have energy refiner, metal refiner, assembler, chemical plant, fabricator, water, and tools.
The Bad: The biggest flaw in this design is the large open resource/dock compartment. Any fire or hull breach not quickly handle will create a real mess. Luckily even locking off the whole compartment, the ship is very survivable. Although, they said the same about the Titanic!
Also, with only a double food bed, you will be buying plenty of food and the crew will be enjoying regular algae meals.
There is also only 150 storage spaces, the lowest of any ship i have played.
One could also trade out the solar panel for a jammer if you wanted some boarding party fun. However the dock area isn’t exactly gun fight optimal. Or an extra large storage area.
I feel confident this ship could hold its own in a harsh or brutal play through. Given enough time and resources being acquired to get it built!
I am very curious about your thoughts on the design? If you have any ship designs you want to share using the starting Small Hope ship, I would love to see them!

Hello all,
Old MSP got sold and we were left with skeletons and hidden treasures.

One of the issues we have his our SAN device is showing low disk space but it looks like we have unallocated space to provide. We are struggling to understand how to utilize the extra disk space.

We have 24 - 2.7TB Drives using "ADAPT".
Physical: 57.6TB "Virtual Disk Groups"
Logical: 15.4TB "Reserved", 38.6TB "Allocated" and 3.417TB Unallocated

Storage A is only being used and the pool is called "DGA01" and it has a size of 42.2TB with 38.7TB allocated.
There is no obvious "expand" button. We aren't sure why the reserved has to be so high unless its part of the Adapt configuration. The only thing we can find that may possibly let us use that 3.4 TB that is unallocated is to go to the Power Manager and
Click Pools
Click on the action button and select "storage setup"
Click on "Go to Advanced Configuration"
In this window we see...
Create Advanced Pools:
This tool will allow you to set up your storage with a unique configuration for your environment. You will be asked to select disks and group them together according to the data protection (RAID type) they will utilize. It may take several disk groups to build up your entire system, and you will want to have a plan for modeling your storage before continuing.
Would you rather trust the system to suggest an optimal pool configuration based on your installed disks?
Go Back to Suggested Pool Configuration
Otherwise, proceed to create pools manually by clicking Add Disk Group below:
At the bottom is "Pools Created"
It has a row with Pool A(Same as the allocated space already) , Disk group DGA01 (Same as well), Tier = standard, Size = 3494.1GB (3+ TB that is unallocated we are guessing), Data protection = ADAPT (same as well), Class = Virtual (Same as well) and Number of disks = 24, which is correct.
Next to that row is the option to "remove" or i can click "Add disk group" or close the window.
Our question is, if we click "remove" will that allow us to type in a new row and choose maybe 2TB to add from the unallocated space? If we click "Add disk group" with the current row is that the same as "expanding" and will that add the extra unallocated space to the pool?
Man, this is fun.

2023.06.09 15:48 shif0557 First PC build for gaming/as media player and storage (2000 EUR)

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Games: Elder Scrolls series, GTA V, some of the Total War series, Subnautica. Also generally a lot of music listening and film watching on my media players of choice, as well as general use such as communicating with my online friends through Discord and other social media, etc.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
Max. € 2000. Willing to stretch the budget a few extra hundred (within reason).

When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Between now and a month: as soon as I can.

What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
The tower and everything that goes in it, plus monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
Netherlands.

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
N/A.

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No, probably not.

Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Lots of storage space for all my media (in addition to games, film and mostly rare and/or ripped music, a collection that will be growing steadily). At least one big SSD (maybe something like 2TB) plus at least one other large drive (2+TB): HDD in that case is obviously more cost effective, if HDD I would like one that has a long shelf life and is reasonably fast. Of course I will be backing up my drives regularly. A motherboard with lots of drive mounts would also be useful if I'm going to expand my storage in the coming years.

What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
WiFi.

Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
As long as everything fits, haha.

Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I'll purchase a Windows license but it doesn't need to be included in the budget. Debating whether I should go with W10 or W11, leaning towards the former.

Extra info or particulars:
New to PC building.

Thanks in advance!
