I wanted to announce the creation of a new sub junkietalk here, since I think it's especially relevant to this community.
On my journey to a better state of health and wellness, I've found that the most powerful tool I had was understanding my own dopamine system and maintaining conscious awareness of when I was tempted to engage in "low effort/high reward" activities like excessive drinking, smoking, junk food, video game addiction, etc...
Communities like this one provide direct support to members, which is an essential component of recovery. That being said, we often unconsciously maintain harmful self-deceptions throughout our journeys that can ultimately sabotage our efforts to seek balance and happiness. These "junkietalk" rationalizations apply to all forms of addiction, and seeing real-life examples of other people who share our self-deceptions can help us confront them and change our disordered thinking for the better.

2023.03.21 22:05 NewtonBill Made a table of my vehicle distances to help choose in the elimination topics.
Some of these kind of surprised me. Others not so much. In general though, I think low mileage is a pretty good proxy (for me) for vehicles that I think are bad or unfun. There is some confounding behavior with age of the vehicle. I like Lowrider quite a bit (although it is bad at Adventure). Muscle Car is gonna be S-tier, and quickly, so I almost just left it out.

I have 5 years with him. For some reason, he hasn’t proposed to me. We have probably around 3-4 years living together and we have two daughters. I can buy what I need for me and the girls but I never buy expensive luxury handbags or shoes that are over $150. I cannot trust him because he makes up excuses on how he wasn’t ready to give me his bank account information. He sends me money and a lot. He wants to buy me a new vehicle (2023). He spoils me and never tells me to not buy something. BUT, he always works far away and I need more transparency on his side. I want to be able to also see his transactions without feeling he hides something from me. Lies and cheating are a dealbreakers for both of us BUT, our therapist also told us we need to built trust and communicate more and that’s what we’ve been doing. Tonight I’m going to talk to him again, I don’t want to seem toxic but I just want more transparency financially. He’s told me i can get his phone and check whatever I want including the bank statements. Idk what to do. ALSO, I can’t have a joint account with him because I depend on the government and I myself can’t have a lot of money on my bank since im receiving help. I can’t put myself with him in the bank account either. I adore him, and so do my girls but this bothers me a lot. Could he be hiding other shit? There’s no other way to financially handle this because he sends me money and although it’s type of an allowance, I have no choice since I can’t have the account with him :(

This game just seems to be a completely different entity entirely, I seem to be so slow compared to the previous game, I have my setups that I use for each track (changed some recommended to me) and had to turn the Ai down a bit too, but they’re still so incredibly fast on the straights it’s so annoying. Background: WP agreed to IC and not only went to his first appointment yesterday, but made his follow-up appointment without me having to remind him. After trickle truthing for weeks (I think in a previous post I said 6-days but meant 6-weeks) I think we finally have the whole truth of the timeline and depth of feelings for his APs out in the open between us.
He has never been to therapy until now but I have, so in some ways I feel equipped to start handling this on my own without the help of a paid professional. I'll see how it goes before throwing down the money for it, I have some supportive friends that are aware of the situation if I need an ear in-person.
I wanted to share some tools and tricks I've been using that have been helping in the short term the past few days since his (hopefully) full disclosure, and the few weeks prior. Maybe someone else out there will find them helpful while focusing on themselves and their recovery. I've found myself fixated on my partner and his actions for so long now, and while that's understandable, the past few days especially I've found great comfort in focusing on ME again. I think a lot of BPs out there might feel the same.
1) A mood tracking app like Bearable.
This has been helpful for me to track emotions and actions. It's highly editable to allow adding positive behaviors (for me: reading recovery and self help resources, watching recovery videos, partaking in hobbies) and negative/neutral behaviors (phone checking, intrusive thoughts that I can be very granular with describing in the app in order to track different kinds of intrusive thoughts) and the more you 'tap' each one throughout the day increases the "severity" or "weight" of the action. So you can track if your intrusive thoughts may be coinciding with certain other behaviours, or minimized by positive stimuli- and attempt to change behaviours accordingly going forward. Data driven actionables! I love to see it.
This is helpful for me because all my days tend to run together, and my overall perception fo time has always been rather 'squishy'. Temporal perception and I don't know each other.
2) Journalling. Not religiously or daily, but when I need to process in a private way without lashing out and causing hurt, like when I'm emotionally flooded.
Taken straight from previous therapy, but it's been years since I've needed to practice this. I have gotten better since the last D-day about being able to identify when I'm flooding and disengaging from interactions in order to separate myself from a situation I know I will escalate. I know it's understandable that I want to "hurt my WP, and it's justified since he hurt me!" But that's not the kind of person I want myself to be. And understandable ≠ justified. I don't want to regret what I say in the heat of the moment, so I remove myself from the situation.
I vent those heated feelings in my journal(s) instead. Then go back when feeling more stable, and try to identify what I actually NEED to address with him, not dogpiling him with my emotions. I don't want to Mother him, and I don't want him to Father me. I want us to be able to have a conversation- and I'm not always capable of that when I'm deep in my emotions and just want to cause hurt because I am hurt. Again- I can see why I want to do that, but that's not who I want to be.
3) Separation of Time: His Time. My Time. Our Time.
I've found myself on a carousel of wanting to never let him out of my sight, and then not wanting to see him at all. Part of managing this for me has been to see aside time each day that is "my time" when I work on/do things for myself. I make time to focus on my interests and mindfully focus on Me and Myself. During those times I make the choice to not think of him. These times are not announced (because my trust doesn't extend THAT far, as we're very newly in R) but those times are also His Time where I don't expect him to be think of me or make contact with me, so don't become mad when he doesn't. I don't check his location or accounts during this time. Sometimes this is when we are home together, others it's while he is at work and I am home or vice versa- like my lunch breaks. But the point of these times is for me to be present with just myself and focused on myself and my interests.
Our Time is a time of shared activity, where I am making a choice to actively focus on us and rebuilding our relationship. Sometimes this is a conversation about recovery. Other times it's watching a show together without the distraction of phones. Or talking about one of our separate or shared interests.
All in all I'm feeling optimistic today, so I suppose I wanted to share some positive actionables that I as a BP have found helpful. I'm in a headspace today where I can acknowledge that the only person I have any hope of "controlling" is myself. No matter how R turns out; if I work on myself, for myself, the outcome will be positive. Reconciliation and Recovery is my desire, and working on understanding and supporting myself will help with that- but it's not the ONLY reason to do it. I am my top priority. And spending time on supporting and understanding myself for myself is always time well spent. 💜

2023.03.21 22:03 sicksadbadgirl Asking for a little help for various things. SNAP benefits come in on the 6th of each month.
I’m kinda scared to post, but I don’t have any other options right now. I’m gonna try really hard to keep this simple. My husband can’t work and is applying for social security disability. I’m here taking care of him and our 5 kids. We did get approved for snap about 2 months ago, but we are out of benefits right now until the 6th. We’ve got a lot of dry goods, but need perishable items (milk, meats, fresh fruit/veggies, eggs) that we buy as needed to prevent spoilage and waste. I guess money is the best solution for that because I can shop deals locally and get more of what I need. Besides that, our younger kids really need new undies. My son hasn’t had new for at least 2 years and they’re extremely worn. Last thing that some may not see as a necessity is our Netflix/prime/apple subscriptions. Our household is moderately immunocompromised (husband: sarcoid, me: rheumatoid) and we do the kids’ schooling online (autistic/adhd) so we are at home the majority of the time. TV is one of those things we can spend time together with as a family and take our minds off stress and depression, so that’s a really valued source of decompression for us. Adding small Amazon list but I left a few things off like head and shoulders which is way too expensive on there and I could get half that price in store. We appreciate any help more than you could imagine.

Today I was on a video call with the head of HR. I work from home so I was taking the call in my bedroom. It was actually about how I was denied a promotion, so pretty heavy stuff.
I suddenly hear a knock at my bedroom door, so I tell her that I'll be right back and turn off my camera. I open the door and it's a buddy of mine from Poland that I haven't seen in almost a year, and here he is knocking on my door. He just got engaged to my roommate so we greet each other and then he says there's a plumber at my door I need to speak to.
So I go downstairs to talk to the plumber, and he's telling me he needs to fix our sink, but doesn't know which one. I am not aware of any sinks being broken, so he shows me the email from our landlord and the address given is for the house next door. So I point him to the house next door and he's insisting that it's our house that has the broken sink. I'm telling him I haven't heard anything from the landlord and have no idea what he's talking about.
Meanwhile this lady is kinda standing near our porch and asks if I live there. I tell her yes and she says that she lost her airpod case last week and it's pinging indicates that it's inside our house. So the plumber wanders off and I go inside our house to try to hear the Airpod case pinging.
I ask the Polish guy and my roommate's girlfriend if they've seen the case and they have no idea what I was talking about. So then I hear the pinging coming from my roommate's room and ask his gf to retrieve it, and she realizes that she thought it was hers, so she goes downstairs to talk to the girl and now my roommate's gf is distressed that she has no idea where her airpods case is. And then I look for the plumber and can't find him but his car was still there. Maybe he did indeed go to the neighbors.
It was a lot all in the span of like 3 minutes.
Then continue my conversation with the HR person about how I'm upset about work lmao.

Meanwhile this lady is kinda standing near our porch and asks if I live there. I tell her yes and she says that she lost her airpod case last week and it's pinging indicates that it's inside our house. So the plumber wanders off and I go inside our house to try to hear the Airpod case pinging.
I ask the Polish guy and my roommate's girlfriend if they've seen the case and they have no idea what I was talking about. So then I hear the pinging coming from my roommate's room and ask his gf to retrieve it, and she realizes that she thought it was hers, so she goes downstairs to talk to the girl and now my roommate's gf is distressed that she has no idea where her airpods case is. And then I look for the plumber and can't find him but his car was still there. Maybe he did indeed go to the neighbors.
It was a lot all in the span of like 3 minutes.
Then continue my conversation with the HR person about how I'm upset about work lmao.

Basically, I was thinking of parking my car at the "park&ride" that it's supposed to be free for metro users, is that the case if I take my car back after a few days? Because I would like to park my car there, take the metro to Dubai Airport T1 and come back after 3 days, but I don't want to be towed/slapped with a fine/having to pay a big parking fee.
Do you know if that's possible?

I've had PF for about a year now, looking to get truly serious about fixing this and my summer shoes for work don't give me enough room for any insoles. The boots I wear in the winter are far too warm for use in summer months. I've got some hiking stuff planned for this summer and want to see if I can combine boots for that and work since I don't do anything heavy at work, just lots of steps (has made trying to heal this injury a huge pain!). My basic wishlist is:

I'm in my second semester at a 2-year college, and I was originally planning to transfer to a 4-year institution after 2 years at junior college in order to save money and complete my degree. However, it's become clear that I won't have enough money saved to make car payments and pay for college after my 2 years are up, so it's looking like I'll have to take a break year after junior college to work full time. What are the possible downsides of stopping after my second year? Is there a risk of losing credits/access to financial aid? Do I lose my status as a "transfer" student? I'm sure others have asked this question, but I can't find anything about this kind of situation online, so I'm asking here. Thanks guys!
