Comcast, Verizon and AT&T want to end net neutrality so they can charge extra fees to control what we see & do online. On July 12, we take the first step to stop them. This is a battle for the Internet's future. Before you do anything else, send a letter to the FCC & Congress now!

2023.03.21 21:29 dev_named_jeff Is remote work here to stay?
I'm curious as to what everyone thinks about remote work vs in person work. I have a pretty unique perspective working in software development but I wrote a couple pros and cons to working remote. Is it here to stay, and is it justifiable for companies?
Pros:
- Flexibility: Remote work allows employees to work from anywhere, which can be especially beneficial for those who need to balance work with other commitments such as childcare, eldercare, or personal obligations.
- Increased productivity: Remote workers have fewer distractions and may be able to work more efficiently than they would in a traditional office setting.
- Reduced commute time and costs: Not having to commute to work can save employees time and money on transportation and other related expenses.
- Improved work-life balance: Remote work can provide employees with more control over their schedules, allowing them to better balance work and personal life.
- Access to a broader talent pool: Employers can hire remote workers from anywhere, allowing them to access a larger talent pool and find the best candidates for their open positions.
- Reduced overhead costs: Employers can save money on rent, utilities, and other expenses by having fewer employees working in a physical office space.
Cons:
- Lack of face-to-face interaction: Remote work can lead to isolation and a lack of social interaction, which can negatively impact employee morale and mental health.
- Difficulty with collaboration and communication: Without the ability to easily meet in person, remote teams may struggle with communication and collaboration, which can lead to misunderstandings and delays.
- Potential for distractions: While remote workers may have fewer distractions than they would in a traditional office, they may also face distractions at home that can impact their productivity.
- Technological challenges: Remote work requires a reliable internet connection and access to the necessary software and tools, which can be challenging for some employees.
- Difficulty with monitoring performance: Without being able to physically observe employees, it can be difficult for managers to monitor their performance and ensure that they are meeting expectations.
- Blurring of work-life boundaries: Remote work can make it difficult to separate work from your personal life

2023.03.21 21:26 tiffyp_01 Prediction: Shortly after the 3DS/WiiU EShops close, a bunch of 3DS and Wii U games will be announced as having Switch ports coming soon
Just a small prediction from me here but I definitely think this is something that'll happen in the coming months. Nothing has been announced as of yet because the EShop is still open and presumably that's causing a lot more people to buy games while it's still there, and obviously all these companies want people to buy their games as much as possible, but I'd say give it until the next Nintendo Direct and a bunch of 3DS games will have Switch ports announced. All the games people are hurrying to buy right now will be on the Switch and people are just going to end up buying them all over again. Which is cool with me, I love the Switch and there's a lot of games I'd love to see ported over there so I can have all my favorite games on one console (I'd really love to see a Switch port of Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright) I'm just predicting that's something that'll happen sooner or later.
(Incidentally, I've seen a lot of posts about the 3DS EShop closure relating to the Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright DLC, and how people were rushing to finish the game before the EShop closed because they didn't think they'd be able to download the DLC after it closed... I wish people wouldn't so casually spread misinformation like that. The DLC for Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright doesn't require connecting to the EShop, it just requires a connection to the internet- just like the daily puzzles in regular Professor Layton games. So long as you own the game, even after the Eshop closes that DLC will still be available to you)

2023.03.21 21:09 SaphiraLuna1 Average utilities cost for 3 people?
Hi everyone,
I'll be moving to Ottawa from the Quebec side in about a month with a couple friends and am currently trying to find a place to live. However, I'm having a hard time figuring out which places we can actually afford because all the apartments I've rented in the past have been all included (only Internet extra) so knowing how much to budget for rent vs utilities has me completely lost. If some of you could give me an estimate for a 3 bedroom home/townhome with 3 adults it would be greatly appreciated!

2023.03.21 20:35 bass43239 Is it normal to work in a shop with no Journeyman or Master?
Been working as an apprentice in a 10 man shop for about 2 months now. I really enjoy the work when I'm able to actually get in there and someone has the time to teach me something. but i've been paying my dues, learning through the internet, and having a blast all the same.
I recently found out everyone on the 10 man crew (except the owner who i only see on shop days) is an apprentice with wildly varying years in service. most of us have been apprentices in the 0-5 years range but some have been there 6-9 years and a couple even higher than that. My foreman on the last project was 13 year apprentice and honestly that scared the living shit out of me. I come from a union background and it was my understanding most of the trades i worked with turned out at around 5 years.
I am extremely new to the plumbing and shop culture, so I apologize if this is a widespread thing, it is certainly just a different experience learning from other coworkers who have been there a couple months longer than me VS the 60 year old salt journeymen i've had before. not a bad one, but i just wanted to make sure this is the best foundation for my career.

2023.03.21 20:27 verynice020 Charter Spectrum Scam Awareness
I am sure this has happened to other people, but I wanted to try to make everybody aware if I could. I think it’s pretty common knowledge that the ATT/Spectrum/Other ISPs salespeople at Walmart or Target are bad news, but I didn’t know it was this bad.
I chatted with one of them as she asked me about what internet speed I typically get and how much I pay. I answered cause she just caught me off guard and I didn’t think anything else of it. My internet had been slow (i have ATT) and I was curious if other providers could provide quicker internet in my area, so I just gave her my address to look it up.
And that was it. 2 days later, I received the equipment for Charter Spectrum. Um, wtf? I ask, after never approving this, never signing anything, etc. I contacted the sales person whom I talked with and she said to just return the equipment to a UPS store and I’d be good to go. So I return it, maybe a week or so after it had been delivered. All good.
Nope. Here I sit, like 2 months from when I returned the equipment with an email saying that I have a past due balance of $136. What! That doesn’t even make sense, I RETURNED THE EQUIPMENT. So I just went to a Spectrum store and explained the situation and they said that they suspect she just signed me up for an account without my knowledge or confirmation and to contact the billing department to credit the account.
As I sit now, I believe it is all taken care of. The billing person was able to credit my account and send me to another department to close my account. It all seemed extremely fishy because that whole crediting and closing my account process, which is usually a pain in the a**, was super easy.
I was definitely dumb to even attempt to talk to the sales person but I can’t imagine what they do to college kids, elders, etc. Hopefully this helps somebody.

2023.03.21 20:02 KD2JAG Survey on consumer satisfaction with Internet Service Providers - United States
I represent a grassroots NPO called Fair Internet Coalition.
Our mission is to raise awareness of consumer dissatisfaction with existing broadband monopolies, demand action from regulators/legislators, and promote competitive options.
We are collecting data on the largest internet providers in the country, and need YOUR feedback.
Aside from your experiences with the ISP, we will only ask for: Email address, ZIP, County, State.
Location information helps us with our demographics analysis, to learn where the responses are coming from. The email address field is only to verify that the submission came from a true ratepaying individual, and not a bot.
We will NEVER spam your email, and you have the option to opt-out from future contact as part of the survey. We aggregate and anonymize this data in an easy to read report, which we then share with industry stakeholders on a regular basis.
All the surveys are linked on our website here -
https://fairinternetcoalition.org/isp-satisfaction-surveys/.
Current surveys are for:
- AlticeUSA
- Comcast/Xfinity
- Cox Communications
- Spectrum/Charter
- VerizonFIOS
We welcome any and all feedback, and hope you will follow our growing movement!

2023.03.21 19:34 Demidams Is our router defective or I simply don't know how ethernet works
| Hi InternetPH! Bit of a context, our plan is PLDT 1699 with 200mbps speed. We have two routers, one from PLDT and one TP-Link-WR840N. The PLDT router is stationed sa first floor ng house, while yung TP-Link router ay nasa room ko which is nasa third floor (set as AP, connected via a long ethernet cable). I have a laptop which is connected to the TP Link router via ethernet cable which I use daily. I am wondering lang kasi I get slower speedtest results sa laptop na connected via ethernet sa TP Link router vs when connected sa wifi (5Ghz or 2.4Ghz) sa PLDT router. So I did some tests para mas clear yung problem and here are the results. The tests were done around the same time with the same laptop. From the data I gathered I can conclude na around 100mbps lang yung abot ng ethernet namin even though yung speed namin can clearly reach around 400mbps. So my questions are: - Why am I getting slower speeds when I am connected via ethernet vs being connected thru 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz wifi?
- Hindi ba dapat max speed ang maabot ng laptop ko since im connected via ethernet? (correct me if im wrong on this one lol)
- How can I make my wifi speed the same with my ethernet speed? Or is it even possible na mangyari yon?
- If so how do I fix this? Do i need higher quality ethernet cables? Better 3rd party router? Or do I have to ask for a replacement for our PLDT router?
Thanks for anyone who read through the whole thing lol PS: Unrelated question hahaha, bakit kaya above advertised yung nakukuha naming speed pero ang trashy naman ping/latency in some games? Pero pag sa ibang bahay naman with the same isp and plan okay naman. Malas lang ba talaga ako or its just pldt doing pldt things haha submitted by Demidams to InternetPH [link] [comments] |
2023.03.21 19:34 Scoutdad How reliable/stable are “connect to cell” Bluetooth to phone handset connections?
FIL is now alone and I am working on reconfiguring his internet/cable/phone service. Considering dropping the Spectrum VOIP landline, especially if I switch ISP to ATT and they charge $25/mo. He needs a cheap cell for backup if internet goes down. Currently testing out a Tracphone Samsung Galaxy AO3 (sp?).
If once the connection is made it is stable and will automatically reconnect if a power outage or something this might work. If the Bluetooth connection requires his intervention to reestablish periodically that would likely be beyond his capability.

2023.03.21 19:10 hk15 Internet choice ordinance
Just wondering if anyone has used the internet choice ordinance to get their landlord to allow other isp into their building. I live in a new apartment building(with way more than 4 units), and want to get away from Comcast. However I emailed my landlord and they said they will not with Sonic or any other isp. I looked at the code and it seems pretty clear, just curious if anyone has any advice on things the landlord might try to trip me up on.

2023.03.21 17:30 thedebatefailure Sometimes, battleboarding can be fun.
I feel like I shit on battleboarding too often. I've avoided it for a while, briefly having it return to my general attention when I'm bored on Reddit, or Youtube/Quora decides that I'm interested in powerscaling. Every now I'll have an idea in my head, which generally goes "Hm, it would be interesting if these two characters had a go at eachother." Maybe I'm a masochist, but there are brief moments where I'll come back to battleboarding because it's fun.
I get that the masses of battleboarding can generally be filled with powerscalers who stake too much of their ego on their favorite characters, or people who believe those guys, feeding on eachother's asses like a terrible ouroboros that keeps telling you X character is multiversal and FTL. Sometimes it feels that the entire thing is pretty boring, a mishmash of calculations where you decide who can punch the hardest or who has the craziest hax, and the most stimulating thing is threads upon threads of people insulting eachother over how much a comic book can bench press.
But, at it's core, battleboarding is meant to be a bunch of fun thought experiments, made by nerds for nerds(Or anyone, really. I'm not gonna gatekeep battleboarding.). Battleboarding can be fun, when you're wondering about different scenarios in your head, and you're discussing it with other people who gives you different perspectives on said matchups that you've never thought of before. Seeing so many people talk about, say, how many 5-year-olds they could take in a fight was one of the most entertaining things I've read on Reddit.
I feel it really depends on the attitude people are taking about battleboarding, as well as the prompt itself. Maybe some prompts lend to being more interesting, such as some matchups that can have different outcomes depending on certain factors (Personally I believe Diavolo vs Jotaro from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure would be an example, as it depends on what kind of knowledge the combatants have), or fights that are very close such that many things can be considered (DIO vs Corvo from Dishonored?). Maybe matchups that are less conventional(prompts that aren't just simple 1v1 fights), are more interesting.
Whoever you're discussing the matchup with can affect how interesting it is too. Nobody likes one-liners and people who are too focused on having their favorite character win, of course. Unfortunately I don't have any battleboarding friends, so my best shot is always rolling the dice with random people on the internet. I was going somewhere with this, but I lost my train of thought here, so I'll let this be.
Anyways, battleboarding can be fun. Sometimes. Don't take it too seriously. Just figured I'd be a little positive about it for once.

2023.03.21 17:14 shadow_helper SRX IPv6 + Xfinity/Comcast Residential customer config
TLDR: Working IPv6 config for Xfinity, wanted to share.
I was using a previous IPv6 Configuration that was a combination of what I found on reddit and elsewhere online.
After changing my cable modem, the previous configuration stopped working. (modem would not finish connecting unless I deactivated ipv6)
After a bunch of experimentation, I found that router-advertisement passive-mode is what I needed.
I don't completely understand why this would be, any thoughts would be appreciated. Was my SRX trying to be the upstream router for my cable modem?

2023.03.21 16:26 MarkPugnerIII Any good USB Ethernet adapters?
I have a Dell micro Optiplex I was thinking of using for PFsense. It only has one ethernet adapter so I grabbed a second USB adapter. I installed PFsense on it but it' cuts my internet speeds down to 400-5ooMb vs 1Gb using my Asus router.
I think the issue is they're Realtek adapters in it but I'm not positive.
Does anyone know of USB adapters that work at full Gb speeds? Or is this PC just not going to be useable for a decent PFSense box?
I was just trying to use what I had without spending much.

2023.03.21 16:03 JRome19921993 Ask a JW: Tower of Babel/ AI/AGI
I no longer have contact with any active JW members, however, I would be interested, if any are lurking here, if there have been any discussions at the r+f level (ie articles/ talks) about artificial intelligence (whether AI or AGI). I would be interested to hear how they square the circle that 'god' intervened in the Tower of Babel story, because if they achieved that goal 'there would be nothing that they could not accomplish', vs. the real possibility that we are facing a singularity within our lifetime re: AI. Of course, this question probably could have been asked for: written language, copying texts, printing press, radio, television, internet...
