Budget: Around $1400 (with some flex)
So I have a chance at getting an i9-13900 for about 50% off and I've been thinking about building a PC to save money over a pre-built. The issue I'm having is when I use the i9 I feel like I need to upgrade kind of everything to match the quality and my builds keep going $2,000+.
I've been using this build here as a base for my build but it currently sits at $1668, minus about $300 for the i9 puts as at $1368 but that doesn't include the power supply and storage and the 3060 is pretty underwhelming. Is there anything in here I can go a bit cheaper on to drive down the price so I can potentially splurge on a video card?
Video Card: This particular build uses an MSI RTX 3060 Ventus 3X 12G OC GeForce RTX 3060 12GB 12 GB Video Card but I think at minimum I would want to use a 3060ti if I can get my hands on it. But that adds $100 immediately.
CPU Cooler: Kind of out of my depth on this one, whatever the minimum required cooler is, is what I'm most likely going to go with. This is what my build has currently: Corsair iCUE H150i RGB ELITE 65.57 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Memory: I think 32 GB of RAM is enough. This is the one in the build G.Skill Ripjaws S5 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR5-5600 CL36 Memory but I think I can get away with the 32gb version G.Skill Ripjaws S5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory
Storage: 2 TB would be nice but a 1TB SSD would probably be more than adequate. This is the one on the build HP FX900 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive seems like these sell for around $150 so a little trimming here could be nice. Would I regret having less than 2 TB? 1TB alone seems like a lot.
Motherboard: Another area where I'm kind of out of my depth. I don't really need one with Wifi as I will be hardwired into my router. The build motherboard MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI ATX LGA1700. It didn't really seem like there was a price drop for the non-wifi version.
Case: I'm not too picky, this one came up in a few builds on PCPartspicker: the Lian Li case, also comes in white which I like.
Power Supply: Last time I'll mention being out of my depth. Whatever the near-minimum requirement is I'll take it. This is the build choice Rosewill Quark 1000 1000 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply. This one runs around $200.
So with a google search for prices and even with a discount this build is still sitting around (and probably well over if there are shipping costs) $1700. Where can I most effectively trim the fat on this without sacrificing too much in terms of performance? And ideally if I could get the price down quite a bit I'd love to upgrade at video card if I can. Any explanation on how to pick a motherboard, and such is also highly appreciated.

I've been playing with an experienced group consistently over the last year. In terms of power, here's my list:

1. Vagabond - In my mind, vag will always be top until a rework is done. Just broken at a fundamental level at the moment. We don't play with vag on digital anymore, and in-person we limit battles to 1 point per battle. If you know, you know.
   
2. Warlords - Powerful, but still fair if countered properly. Enjoyable to play with and against.
   
3. Iron Keepers - Hard to pick up, but rock solid if played by a skilled player. One of my favorites to play.
   
4. Woodland - Used to be right under vag, but with the marauders expansion, and increased strategies to counter them, they just got beat out imo.
   
5. Moles - Rock solid faction, so fun to play. The most well-rounded faction on digital right now.
   
6. Eyrie - They're fun, and can be powerful, but it's definitely dependant on what factions you play with. They need lots of map space, and get punished heavily for failing.
   
7. Otters - Fun, but nobody buys from them anymore. Can absolutely steamroll if people buy a lot.
   
8. Corvids - Fun, but just not powerful enough a lot of the time unless you pull off some really clever stuff.
   
9. Cats - My personal least favorite. So much map control required to win, with no action economy to get that map control. We've had maybe 3 or 4 cat wins total out of our 50+ games. Not that fun to play for me. Cats need some love from Leader to make them shine imo.
   
10. Lizards - Some of you may disagree. It could just be the way our table plays, but they stick out as overwhelmingly the worst faction for us. 23 points is the highest I've ever been able to get them, and nobody has broken that thus far in our group. 0 points-based wins, and 2 dominance wins.
    

Overall I think the game is in a great state. The fact that Lizards and Cats are the only "bad picks" (for our group) is impressive, and the only faction that I see as "broken" is vag. Give cats and lizards a little boost, and tweak vagabond's battle point scoring, and you have an impressively balanced asymmetric game imo.
The last four factions have been so high quality, Leader has learned their lessons, and really puts a lot of love into every release.
What are your guy's thoughts? Any changes you would make to my list?

My character would be thrown into the universe and run into Delta on a scavenging run for supplies.

If you are in the cohort coming to Botswana in a few months, here are a few tips. I’ve been in country since February 25, coming as a one year PC Response Voluntee….completed orientation and got to my site just last Saturday. If you have an Iphone with ATT as your carrier, you should check with the carrier on what it will take to unlock the phone completely in order to use the SIM card for Botswana. I was told, after I spent over $70 once here that I could have requested some kind of letter from my coordinator in the US…the person who interviewed you. So I was never successful and had to purchase a local phone so now carry two phones. Also, really push the PC office in Gaborone on how you can learn about the correct modem and amount of coverage you need if you get a Wi-Fi modem…highly recommended; also i learned that I can use my host family Wi-Fi so spent money on a modem I don’t need. Also, you will get a medical kit with almost anything you can think of so you don’t need to purchase things like ibuprofen, anti itch cream, antibiotic cream, etc. Makes more sense for you to get the kit and then add to it if you need. Bring your personal care items but the stores in Gaborone are well supplied. Come with the round and square power converters and a surge protector from the US to plug in to the converter so you can charge various devices. You can negotiate with the PC training staff to take a trip from the training location if you are close enough for a day trip to Gaborone. Also, you might need to press the PC staff to give you good information on the availability of things to furnish your place at your final destination and you may need to shop in Gaborone before you get to your village. The PC Botswana staff is great, very invested but you need to feel comfortable advocating for your needs.
I’m getting settled into my site and gradually getting a sense of the work I will do…be patient with yourself and those around you. Batswanas are super nice and friendly but the work culture is different. This is a good book to read as an overview: Botswana, the essential guide to customs and culture….Mike Main.

Some comics spoilers for those of you who haven’t read how Jon’s powers awakened (either from the issues or somewhere online, I mean).
In the comics (Superman: Lois & Clark #6, I think? And/or #7), because Lois is investigating Intergang, Mannheim has his people kidnap her & Jon. Superman is unable to save them (at least, before they would die, although in the show Mannheim can conceal them), the only way they escape is that Jon’s strength and invulnerability kick in; earlier that morning (iirc), his super-hearing started to appear, to foreshadow that he would get powers, and could save him and his mom later on once it all looked hopeless (to them, anyway).
While this show obviously doesn’t stick to comics canon, it would make a lot of sense for Mannheim to kidnap Lois - and maybe Jon, either as a way to keep her from fighting/calling Clark before Intergang gets them contained, or because Jon did the blood-drive off-screen without thinking (because no-one treats him as Kryptonian, and we do know he can be that oblivious - see: the XK-tracking dogs scene) - and it could introduce what Mannheim’s goals are with the blood. Plus, Jon could finally awaken his powers, and if he saves them, can finally get his own hero moment since S1. It’d be similar to the comics: Superman can’t be there and they feel hopeless at Intergang’s utter lack of mercy - after all, not only would Mannheim likely experiment on Lois, he would definitely kill them both once he feels they’re no longer useful.
And if Mannheim’s aware of Jon’s blood, then that could mean a more grounded, not-ableist, way for her to recover; if Jon’s blood is compatible with her because she’s his mom, but like in Smallville’s similar plot, she has to take regular doses to stay alive and it doesn’t give her powers, it would be a treatment, not a magical cure, and it would make sense no-one else could know or utilize it, since not only would it not work for them, and would be in limited supply, it’d endanger the family.
They could make it that because Jon is more hybrid-like (I still want hybrid powers for him), his blood can treat Lois, but Clark’s and Jordan’s would give people powers, so that’s another reason to hide the treatment, while also explaining why Lois didn’t get powers.
(It’d also explain why the boys get different power-sets, + the family can have the experience of helping their kid figure out unknown powers, paralleling Clark with his own parents as a child.)
It also would be a great way to bring back up all the stuff Jon was saying in season 2, via things being different with Clark if he had powers - I’d been hoping the writers would actually deal with their issues right away, but they’ve continued to leave Jon & Clark without connection or resolution, and I’d prefer to imagine it could come up properly again and be addressed, so I’d like it if Clark tries to give Jon more attention after, and it reveals their need to heal to Clark, so they can finally start on that. The theme of the season is them being a unified family, isn’t it?? Because that’s what I thought it was meant to be, but they’re not there yet.
Anyway, that’s my post. Thoughts?

On March 7th, Sen. Warner introduced the RESTRICT Act. A summary of the bill provided by Sen. Warner's office can be read here.
The Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology (RESTRICT) Act would:

• Require the Secretary of Commerce to establish procedures to identify, deter, disrupt, prevent, prohibit, and mitigate transactions involving information and communications technology products in which any foreign adversary has any interest and poses undue or unacceptable risk to national security.
• Prioritize evaluation of ICT products used in critical infrastructure, integral to telecommunications products, or pertaining to a range of defined emerging, foundational, and disruptive technologies with serious national security implications. • Ensure comprehensive actions to address risks of untrusted foreign ICT by requiring the Secretary to take up consideration of concerning activity identified by other USG entities.
• Educate the public and business community about the threat by requiring the Secretary of Commerce to coordinate with the Director of National Intelligence to provide declassified information on how transactions denied or otherwise mitigated posed undue or unacceptable risk.

Remember a little bill called the Patriot Act that purported to be in the interest of national security? This bill is not much different in broad definitions that allow the government to act against anything deemed a foreign adversary. The ACLU has released a statement against the RESTRICT Act due to concerns about powers provided to the executive government with limited recourse to challenge actions taken against violators.

The bill, known as the RESTRICT Act, would significantly expand the Executive Branch’s power to control what apps and technologies Americans can access, while limiting Americans’ ability to challenge those actions in court. It would also impose civil and criminal penalties for violating bans imposed pursuant to the legislation, which could be used against people attempting to evade a TikTok ban.

The RESTRICT Act grants the secretary of commerce broad authority to take “any . . . action as necessary” to carry out its responsibilities. Such authority explicitly includes establishing “rules, regulations, and procedures as the Secretary considers appropriate,” issuing guidance and advisory opinions, and conducting “investigations of violations of any authorization, order, mitigation measure, regulation, or prohibition issued” under it.
The RESTRICT Act outlines unlawful acts that can result in civil and/or criminal penalties. Those unlawful acts include both direct violations of “any regulation, order, direction, mitigation measure, prohibition, or other authorization or directive issued” under it and inchoate offenses such as attempt and conspiracy. As drafted, a criminal violation will require specific intent — i.e., proof that an unlawful act was committed “willfully.” Civil violations can result in fines up to $250,000 or twice the amount of the transaction that is the basis of the violation, whichever is greater. Criminal penalties can result in fines up to $1 million and/or imprisonment up to 20 years.
The government has made it clear regarding their thoughts about encryption and VPNs. These broad government bills that overreach into internet rights and privacy need to be fought. No matter how many times Sen. Warner provides that it is only going to be used for foreign adversaries, the wording of this bill provides an opening for overreach against it's own citizens much like the patriot act did.

Had to replace my 750watt psw, I bought a used one online, I replaced the power supply and also had to replace the 24 pin cable to get my pc to start I've removed all unnecessary hardware "gpu, ssd" now it will startup but after about 4 seconds it skipps like a car holding 1000rpm and then just jumps to 500rpm and keeps doing this in a 4 sec loop, I'm stumped on what the issue can be ?

Hello, around january I started having an issue while playing games such as Beat Saber and Fortnite. With my beefy PC, I got the PSU to be able to support any high power draw as all calculators recommended up to 700W. I knew I was gonna be gaming heavily on this thing when I bought it in April of 2022. Its been great until january when the problem started.
Sooooo the problem. While playing games with the graphics turned up, after a while both my screens would go black and my gpu fans would ramp up to over 100% speed. This wouldn't disable the computer, as I can hear audio and talk on discord. The only way to recover is to cycle power to the PC.
That's how it started out. As of a month ago, it started doing this more often. When it occurred right as I booted the PC, that's when I knew something was wrong. I spent the past 4 weeks troubleshooting my system, and I was unsuccessful. Two days ago I turned on my PC to do my taxes and it took 18 attempts to finally get into the PC, it would do the black screen fans full blast thing instantly and sometimes id be able to get to the login screen.
Okay so now the part you will probably ask about, what exactly did I do to troubleshoot this issue? Well, just about everything I COULD do without voiding the warranty on the system or firing the parts cannon. My efforts are as follows:
GPU: Reinstalled graphics driver Rolled back graphics driver Installed studio driver instead of game ready driver Unvervolt and lower the clock Overclocking (bc why not) Setting the fan speed to 100 preemptively Monitored the temperature Monitored the power draw Checked the power connections from the psu to the gpu Checked the pcie slot and also changed slots Held the gpu up to be more level Ran one daisey chain cable to the gpu instead of two separate cables Switched to silent bios mode instead of oc mode Uninstalled the drivers Uninstalled the entire device and let windows reinstall upon restart
MOTHERBOARD: Updated bios version to current Checked for any updates Tweaked bios with just about every setting Ran default bios settings Removed battery on MB to reset bios Unplugged everything and plugged everything back in Monitored temps and power
RAM: Ran memtest86 Ran windows memory diagnostic Switched ram sticks Switched dimm slots
CPU: Ran Intel diagnostics Ran intel's update tool Checked temps and power Overclocked and underclocked
PSU: Ran OCCT to monitor power Used OCCT and hwinfo to check power Swapped cables in the ports to rule out faulty ports
...and I found...nothing! Nothing I did fixed or even improved my issue. All my tests came back perfectly normal and the only thing I learned is that my components are all in good condition. Everything is updated, everything is nice and cool, the system power draw never got above 730W.
So as you can see, I have been busy. Whenever I wasn't at work I was troubleshooting this poor PC trying to fix or at the very least diagnose the problem properly.
I purchased the PC through LyteTech through their pc building website and I have been in contact with them for a few weeks, and after sharing my efforts and trying some of their suggestions, the only thing left to do is to send the PC back for repair. All I have to pay is shipping since its still under warranty. They said they will investigate my issue and repaireplace whatever needs it at no extra cost.
Obviously I can't open the gpu up to reapply thermal paste or check for bad capacitors because that would void the warranty and id be screwed. Same goes for the power supply. I'm not going to try swapping parts with different ones to rule out components, because I don't have any spare pc components lying around. This is my first desktop PC lmao. I figured sending it in for repair is my only option if I don't wanna buy all new components that may not even be bad. I know for a fact it isn't the ram or ssd.
So I think I need to mention this. This issue seems to be very common with gigabyte hardware. I did my research on the issue and with the windows crash dump files was able to determine there is a hardware issue present. However, it doesn't give that crash dump for every time it crashes, only about 10% of the time. Lots of people have this issue, and they end up finding completely different root causes such as bad thermal paste on the gpu, faulty psu, faulty cables, overheating cpu, bad pcie slot, or incorrect drivers. None of these seem to be the case for me, except for the thermal paste bc warranty.
So that's my story, now you know everything. Let me know what you think about my issue.

Is anybody here familiar with the old MacMini hardware and upgrading the processor? I actually successfully upgrade the coreduo to a core2duo. It was working fine in macos and a dual boot linux os. But it would occasionally freeze hard requiring a forced reboot. I thought maybe it was an issue with the heatsink on the processor. When removing the heatsink, two of the plastic pins that hold it in place broke and it wasn't held on real well. I bought new pins and resecured the heatsink (after applying new thermal paste). Now it won't boot. I must have done something during that process but not sure what. Everything looks good. When trying to power it on, the fan turns on and the led lights up, but it won't turn on the monitor. No hard drive noise and it won't respond to any keyboard boot commands like recovery mode. And won't boot from MacOS boot USB. I don't think the CD drive functions anymore but haven't really tried getting a disk in there.
I'm sure it is possible I broke something with a static shock or something but not sure how to troubleshoot this further. Is this thing really dead now? It was a fun little project but I may have to abandon it.
