Nano machine chapter 88
I need to rant again
2023.06.11 03:00 DesignHead9206 I need to rant again
Ok, I might be a desperate case of violent allergy to bad writing, but when I find things that makes no sense to me, it makes me really aggressive.
It's luckily not often the case here, well, probably because the story is slightly surreal to start with, so I accept that as the general context and it's fine.
But within the rules of this worldbuilding I expect absolute narrative consistency. Now 2 or 3 times I have already felt left down in an otherwise amazing moment.
Here again, chapter 445 and 446, the fight of the two Karate gods. Soooo much wrong.
The fight itself, and the flashbacks, are fantastic. But:
- it's absolutely ridiculous that the Silat guy thinks he can convert or in any way force Miu to kill. It's so ridiculous that I can't believe that the same mangaka can go from genius to retarded in a same chapter. - it's equally ridiculous that Elder, who can run so fast and jump so high, and who was right there (he had just caught Kenichi when he fell from the building) needed sooooooo much time to reach the top of the building after noticing the presence of the Silat guy. It's just very bad writing and it drives me NUTS. I really really hate it when writers use these cheap tricks to create tension, like we would not notice. - it's quite annoyingly not credible that Kenichi would leave Miu unprotected and go near an unconscious killing machine (ending stabbed), and that right after that Miu loses her cool TWICE in a row, trying to attack two different Masters.
I was so happy with these chapters, now they're by far the ones I hate the most until now.
Like I mentioned before, it happened already in a similar way with my previous post, and it's strange, it's like a pattern of this mangaka, like losing grip on the story in a moment where the story becomes particularly intense.
Anyway. End of the angry rant.

2023.06.11 02:32 IrreliventPerogi Deadhouse Gates: A First-Time Reader's Experience, Thoughts, and Observations - Book 1: Raraku Pt. 1
Book 1: Raraku
Epigraph
Another entry of Sayings of the Fool by Thenys Bule. I've wondered before what kind of Fool the title refers to; I'm now comfortable saying that these are sort of anti-proverbs, which are examples of folly that must be avoided in others. The fool swims across the desert sands, because he has "seen shells and the like//On this desert floor." Thus, he "swims this land's memory//Thus honoring its past." Curiously, the Fool recognizes the suicidal nature of the task, "For [he] shall drown long before//[he is] done." Also, he is not dying of dehydration, but specifically drowning. It is the past that shall kill him.
The Fool has prioritized honoring the past over his life, the present. Such seems to be our lesson, and given the following chapter (and I assume Book 1 as a whole) being filled with characters making drastic choices for the sake of the past, I feel like this is a most relevant, and thus ominous, warning.
Chapter 1
A new setting, a new cast. I'd known this before I'd started GotM, but it conceptually bothered me far less than it seems to bother others. You learned a new setting and cast in the first book, right? You'd be doing the same if you backed out for another series, right? Anyway, with longer scenes and samples, I can confidently say the prose, characterization, and dialogue are all much improved after a decade's training on Erikson's part. This all also feels very Dune-ish, as well. But without further ado...
Epigraph
A poem or excerpt of a poem titled The Path of Hands by Messremb (whom the Dramatis Personae tells us will make an appearance himself at some point) It ties rather closely with the opening scenes of the chapter, so I'll give my thoughts on this once we have some more context below.
The Chapter Itself
It is the next year, 1164 B.S. and what is locally called the Sixth of the Seven Years of Dryjhna, the Apocalyptic. We get some indication as to what this means later. Mappo Runt watches a rising plume of dust moving across the desert while informing his companion, Icarium, of what it is he sees. Flat-headed, long-necked, shaggy, and black with three legs, he judges it to be some creature known as an aptorian. He also berates Icarium for his running hairdye. Disguised as a Tanno, the seven-foot, Jaghut-blooded Icarium speculates that their passage has been marked by anyone caring or knowledgeable enough to guess who they are, but such could not be helped. The presence of the aptorian speaks to another impending convergence, one which Shadowthrone is inspecting. This particular creature, ranging wide of its pack, has seemingly fallen under the sway of Sha'ik. We get some slight information on who or what Sha'ik is, but not terribly much. They do hold an army out somewhere in the desert, by a watering hold the two aim to reach.
Icarium eyes his friend, a millennium old, and as a Trell, large with a shaggy mane down his neck and back, bearing long, sinuous arms. He recognizes reluctance in his friend, and calls it out. It seems the aptorian is a demon of sorts, and Mappo is reluctant to face such creatures. Icarium, in contrast, is driven by curiosity and would press forward. They pack up camp and enter the basin.
Later, by nightfall, the two continue into the desert, and we get some nice descriptions of the land and its fauna. resting in some ruins, the two prepare for tomorrow's search. Of note, the sand faintly glows to Mappo's eyes, so I assume Trells can see into infrared? We already knew his sight was much better from the previous scene, but this helps contextualize it. We get confirmation that the land is indeed littered with tels, as that's just how long-term civilization works, especially in a desert. Separated fairly evenly at fifty years apart, there was once a rich and powerful civilization that lived here. Many of the ruins tell of a swift and violent end, although the exact nature of this end is uncertain. From this time, legends of Dryjhna the Apocalyptic have formed, resurging once again across the Holy Desert Raraku.
Curiously, the ensuing thoughts of Mappo, despite their strangeness, are considered "familiar ruts" by the text. Thoughts that deny they can discover what occurred here, that they are "no closer" than they've ever been, and that he has no reason to doubt such thoughts. They're looking for something in the lost past, and the nature of that hunt has Mappo checking himself. In the courtyard, Icarium has found something. Tiny scratch marks along the base of a column, coordinated. Could these be the imprints of passage the Epigraph speaks of? This is enough to suggest to the two that there are D'ivers nearby, and we soon find out why. They even assume a specific D'iver, Gryllen. They anticipate more shapeshifters, and it is now that I should point out that all the characters of this storyline are designated as ON the Path of Hands, indicating that this is a literal path/route which is part of some ritual or ceremony. One which seems to attract many shapeshifters, which is described here as "the fever for which there is no cure." The references to Ascendancy both here and in the epigraphs seem to indicate that this path has some ties with that as well. They also reference gates (Deadhouse Gates?) which some believe offer Ascendancy.
Speculation Time:
The Path of Hands is a path that leads to an Azath. Not the Deadhouse but the Odhanhouse in Seven Cities. Namely, because they themselves are near Pan'potsun Odhn, and are, well, in Seven Cities, lol. There is a belief that entering the fickle gates of an Azath provides ascendancy. Considering Shadowthrone and the Rope entered the Deadhouse, and Shadowthrone is evidently interested in the goings on here, there likely isn't nothing to the idea, but Icarium and Mappo seem to be heading for it for some other reason. Namely, Icarium's eternal goal, which we receive some indication of.
Icarium has lived for centuries, possibly millennia,* yet cannot remember his own past (whether this is because of magic shenanigans is currently unknown, but immortals with a mundane/finite memory are one of my favorite niche tropes in fiction so I'm all in on this storyline. It may be that he inherited a Jaghut lifespan and a human/whatever memory, causing this, but the continual reference to a curse may very well be literal) and seems to be seeking a way to recover them for what seems are personal reasons. Mappo seems to regret something in his or Icarium's past, considering his friend's curse a gift.
*This also makes his question "how long have we been friends?" into a bit of fun foreshadowing rather than just the tired "catch the audience up" question. He's legitimately asking on top of the rhetorical device.
A pack of six wolves follows them into the ruins, betrayed by their scent to be shapeshifters, or rather, one shapeshifter in six bodies. D'ivers, it seems, change into groups of animals, be it a swarm of rats or a pack of wolves. Absolutely sick. They recognize the shapeshifter as Ryllandaras, but he does not recognize them. The Trell offers to open their discourse, calling him the brother of Treach (an ascendant himself, the "First Hero") whom thought him dead. The creature responds psychically, promising to kill them, but curious of their story. They seem to feign ignorance of one another, an alliance of convenience rather then friendship, boasting that they'd be able to take him on. They do soon give up the charade, calling one another by name as a final intimidation tactic, and this dissuades the pack from taking them on. We get the implication that Icarium resorting to violence would be a very bad thing for everyone involved, such that Mappo is sworn to prevent such an occurrence. The D'ivers does not seem to recognize Sha'ik, and seems to think killing it's aptorian is no big deal. We leave Mappo and Icarium for the chapter with their disagreeing with that diagnosis, but allowing Ryllandaras to pass regardless.
The next morning, the Imperial Harbor of Hissar is filled with a fresh transport of troops, surrounded by native tribesmen and women armed and shouting, building towards a riot. Such are the musings of Imperial Historian Duiker, the same man who defended Heboric in his trial. Meeting him is Mallick Rel, advisor to the local High Fist, also named as a jhistal priest of the Elder god of the seas. That he was merely greeted by the advisor was a calculated insult. Curiously, this adviser has quickly ascended the ranks to get where he is, inviting countless dark rumors of what he may hold over the High Fist, such that any who stood in Rel's way seemed to meet an accidental end. With the ship now unloading is the new Fist of the 7th, Cotaline of the Crow Clan. Although Duiker doubts his capacity to navigate the political web of the Empire, we shall soon see he is more than adept at cowing the locals.
Mallick Rel near immediately insults the man, his words smooth and insidious. The historian remembers his quick-formed dislike of the creature. Rel informs him that the Empress has no active machinations in Hissar, whatever his source. Duiker is here to observe the new batch of prisoners bound for the Otataral Mines. It doesn't seem like a stretch to assume this is the same ship that Felisin and co. were boarded onto. Mages were often used in the Otataral mines so that they may double as a containment facility. While the mages within often went mad, it is unkown if this was from Otatartal changes or Warren deprivation. With the new batch containing so many muggles, long-term Otataral exposure can be studied in depth.
The two are approached by two more, an unnamed rough-looking captain and the lone surviving Cadre mage of the 7th, Kulp. The two newcomers express significant distaste for their new Fist and the Wickan people as a whole. MR inserts himself into the conversation to note that Coltaine is an odd choice, given the tension between the two groups as well as the Wickan's status as formerly one of the Empire's strongest rivals. But Duiker comments that this is not at all strange, Coltaine was the one to unite the clans and establish a rebellion, one the Empire had a terrible time putting down. The Emperor, in his usual fashion, acquired Coltaine's loyalty through unknown means. While the man was placed in Quon Tali backwaters to rot after Laseen's coup, the degredation of events on Genebackis necessitates the maintenance of order on Seven Cities at all costs, hence, the skilled local Coltaine is placed back in command in the face of the prophesied rebellion.
The man himself approaches the seething mob, who had been continuously escalating their hostilities over the course of the above conversation. With a sheer undulating shout he manages to quell them; compelling them to fall in line and quietly move out. Admiring this show of skill, the four comment on it, with the captain mentioning how Coaltine's political savvy matches his savage people skills. Mallick Rel thanks him for the advice. I must admit, despite spending several paragraphs describing how loathsome the man is, that his directness and frankness, calibrated to match the new energy of the conversation such to drop everyone's defenses was very well done. I myself didn't note the Captains blunder until it was pointed out. He may be a schemer but his people and manipulation skills match.
Elsewhere, sailing down from the Skara isles, our Bridgeburner crew of Crokus, Apsalar, Fiddler, and Kalam continue their journey home-ish. Fiddler, for his part, is bored and seasick, internally lamenting his presence. Crokus and Moby attempt to comfort him, with minimal success. The monkey/demon, for his part, has adopted the sapper as many creatures do.* Fid's internal monologue is a delight to read BTW. He internally frets over their coming excursion in 7C, and all the danger the continent posses.
*While I mentioned this before, it is weird to me that Mammot's familiar is just hanging around after his death. There's something there.
Apsalar calls out a school of flying fish, running from something large. Kalam mentions that its odd the hunting fish would themselves be hunted round these parts, being apex predator's in the area. The dherabi of Seeker's Deep hunt them, but they never come out into water this shallow, or on the opposite side of the continent. Unfortunately, a dhenrabi, one who's scent betrays it as Soultaken, far more massive than any natural creature, appears and begins pursuing them. I will say, this is some excellent creature design. Sure, it's "just" a centipede sea serpent, but the added details of how it swims/sinks with filling/emptying it's caprice with air, along with how it uses this to hunt is the kind of creative and interesting detail that makes this stand out without devolving into an exposition dump.
Interestingly, the Soultaken uses the opportunity to out itself by communicating with them. Fiddler uses the opportunity to warn the creature not to approach. It ignores his warning, moving in for the kill, and promptly has it's head blown off by Fiddler using a munition. My guy is just wandering around a fantasy world with a backpack of thermite grenades while being vaguely unimpressed with all the wizard shenanigans he come across. What an excellent character. As an aside, I assume this particular Soultaken was heading much in the same direction the others were, for whatever reason. I also wonder if they survive the deaths of their animal forms. Hours later, they notice some ridders on the coast, a Malazan messenger and his guards. The two Bridgeburners comunicate through glances, one touch I like with this is how Kalam's messages, while clear, are in Fiddler's pattern of speech, as we're in his head.
I'll note the likely importance of whatever this messenger is hoping to convey, but not speculate as there's nothing to speculate about. Also, Blue Moranth are apparently a thing (although they may have received a passing mention in GotM, now that I think on it) and the route that Fiddler internaly lays out gives us a rough idea of some of the geography of this world. Crokus attempts to make small talk, giving the audience a peek into the Bridgeburner's last time on 7C. The time when Kalam and Quick Ben were on the opposing side, the T'lan Imass marched for the Emporor, and somehow, the two were folded into the Bridgeburners themselves. I'll also note the mention of the "Seven Holy Falah'dan" for later. Fiddler demands the boy be quiet, as "all wars are ugly, but that one was uglier than most." Kalam himself only revealed these details while drunk.
Crokus, thwarted from one line of communication, demands that the BBs explain why they're passing almost completely through the wrong continent on their way home. They explain that they intend to assassinate Empress Laseen. Apsalar takes to this well, muscle memory brining an old smirk of Sorry's to the forefront all the while. She remembers that Kalam himself was a master assassin, high ranking within both his time under a Falah'dan and in the Claw, and is thus confident in his skills. For whatever reason, their plans and preparations begin in 7C with the rebellion. Whatever it is they intend to do here is in accordance with Quick Ben's (who can apparently just warp wherever) scheme he was cooking up at the close of GotM. For the sake of Darujhistan, Crokus agrees to the plot; and so we leave them as they land upon the coast.
Well this has been one heck of a setup! Expanding the world while still being constrained to what's been referenced before. Shapeshifters are racing an immortal amnesiac down the Path of Hands, rebellion is closer than ever, and our good old Bridgeburners are scheming to take the Empire down from the head. I, for one, cannot wait to see how it all unfolds!

2023.06.11 02:16 Frame_Late Interloper (Part 1 Finale)
The
Iconoclast was very different on the inside than it was on the outside. The outside was painted a dark, rusty red and kept simple to help blend into the void of space. It was large, sure, about a kilometer and a half long, but it was also bulky in a sleek way, two words that shouldn't have fit together but
did in this case. The ship had a lot in common with those of tilfish design; substantial in tonnage for its purpose but still practical and efficient. But it was also clearly pieced together from several salvaged tilfish ships by humans, making it thinner and and more predatory in nature than what you'd normally see constructed by the aquatic insectoids.
The inside, however, well that was a different story. It was a warm orange color throughout, and filled to the brim with things you wouldn't expect to see inside of a warship. The first place she saw just down the hall when she entered the ship was the dining hall. The dining hall was actually more like a very large dining room, with dozens of wide circular tables that were bolted to the floor surrounded by elegant dining chairs. Two red vintage soda machines sat side-by-side next to a series of glass-door fridges containing all sorts of drinks from soda to bottled water. A buffet was to the far side of the hall, next to a pair of push doors leading to the kitchen. A few dozen members of the crew were already seated, most of them being Arxur and Humans, although she spotted a few Gojids and Harchens in the mix. Babushka Polina hobbled past them back to the kitchen while mumbling about something, a Venlil wearing an apron opening the doors to the kitchen for her before following her inside.
Everybody was chatting and socializing, dinner apparently not having been served yet. She preened her feathers nervously, scared of what would be served. Even if it wasn't a sentient, the idea of these predators tearing apart a live animal terrified her. She didn't want to be here to observe their eating practices, even if she had seen some outliers. Would they even serve anything other than meat? Sure, Song Lui had served her vegetables, but these people were very different; they had different accents, skin tones, names, clothing, and probably a different culture. She couldn't assume they would act the same as Song Lui, as it would be both foolish and unbecoming of her.
She felt Sargen's clawed paw squeeze her shoulder in a vain attempt to comfort her. "Whatever you think is going to happen, it wont. Just sit down and relax, and I promise I'll be right next to you."
Silijima took a deep breath in the vain attempt to calm down. "What will they be serving," Silijima hissed, the panic in her voice readily apparent. "I don't want to be eating meat from some carcass like a predator. I know that the predators on this ship won't eat
me, but that still doesn't change the fact that they eat like predators."
Sargen just chuckled. "You really don't have a clue. Let's just go sit down, I'll introduce you to some of my coworkers before Igor gives his speech and Babushka announces the beginning of the feast."
Silijima fidgeted but relented, allowing Sargen to steer her into the dining hall and to a table with a few crew members along with a tall, white bottle containing some kind of potent and clear liquid; alcohol maybe? Their presence didn't ground her at all, rather it only made her even more anxious, but she pulled herself together and shooed Sargen away before sitting down. The largest of the humans, practically a giant in size and only a few inches shorter than Tarlim himself, looked at her and she nearly jumped out of her feathers. He was young, but still mature enough to seem jaded, and he had a mop of messy black hair that covered his dark hazel eyes. His lip was scarred, and his neck had a few nasty scars as well that reached down under his loose t-shirt and onto his chest. He was muscular and toned, reminding Silijima of a tree trunk you'd find on her homeworld, and his arms were the size of bridge cables. He was sitting in a larger chair than usual, probably because any normal chair would've seemed comically small in comparison, and probably break under his weight.
"Who's your little friend, Sargen? Is she the new blood?"
Sargen nodded. "That she is. This is Silijima, our newest hull engineer and weapons maintenance coordinator." Sargen gestured to the truly massive human gently. "Silijima, this is Haran, also known as Goliath. He's one of our assault specialists and heavy gunners."
Silijima waved meekly, and Haran nodded. "She doesn't seem too confident. Lucky for us she isn't a grunt."
Sargen scowled at Haran, obviously not happy with how he spoke about Silijima. Silijima, on the other hand, wasn't too offended; she understood she wasn't exactly confident even if she was a trained soldier.
"Haran, please try to show some respect; she's our newest crew member."
Haran shrugged. "I didn't mean to offend, just pointing out that she doesn't exactly have nerves of steel."
"No, no; it's fine," Silijima interjected. "Don't worry about it, Sargen, I know what he means." And she
did. She wasn't brave at all, or at least she didn't think she was brave. Sure, she had fought before, but she was just an engineer. Her combat experience was limited to assisting the ship guard in defending the more vulnerable parts of the ship. It wasn't her job to go out of her way to be face to face with predators, and thus she wasn't used to it. In fact, that was one of the reasons why she was able to last so long inside civilian society after her temporary discharge; most of her fellow soldiers were desensitized to predator glares, a surefire symptom of predator disease, while she was merely capable of reacting in time to not be gutted by an Arxur.
Haran simply nodded. Next to him was a tall, youthful and pale-skinned human with brown hair and green eyes. He gave Silijima a friendly human snarl and a small wave. "It's good to meet you, hun, I'm Timothy."
Silijima imitated him, waving her wings nervously. "It's nice to meet you too, Timothy. What's your role on the ship?"
Timothy chuckled for a moment before responding. "Oh, me? My job's pretty boring. I'm just the quartermaster, essentially the guy who manages the ship's stores and assigns rooms."
Sargen nodded behind her. "Timothy's a good man; he helped me through some hard times and he still does from time to time."
"Yep, I try to help everyone on the ship when I can; Sargen is just special to me because he's one of my close friends." Timothy then turned his attention to Sargen, who seemed to shrink under his carefree gaze. "That reminds me, Sargen, you missed dinner last night. What's that all about?"
"I… something came up." The enormous Gojid stuttered, obviously nervous.
"Oh really? Well, we have a few days before our next assignment. You should come over tonight."
Sargen didn't seem too amused by that idea. "Timothy, you don't have to invite me over every week."
"Oh, but we do," Timothy countered. "Sargen, when you're at home on the station you subsist off of takeout and whatever junk food you pick up at the insta-mart. Me and Madison want to make sure you eat at least
one healthy meal every week."
Sargen grumbled for a moment, but didn't resist causing Timothy's smile to only grow. "Good, I'll expect you to be there. Siijima ,hun, you're invited too if you want to join us. We don't serve meat at the table when our crew members join us for dinner, I promise."
Timothy's kindness shocked Silijima. Inviting someone over for dinner on Nishtal was only done for business or if the individuals in question were good friends. For Timothy to invite Silijima, a relative stranger, over for dinner showed that he truly saw her as a potential friend. "I would be honored, but I wouldn't want to intrude on whatever… this is."
Haran snorted in amusement at Silijima's synopsis of the odd relationship between Timothy and Sargen, obviously having experienced this conversation beforehand.
"Nonsense," Timothy replied, "We always make extra, and any friend of Sargen's is a friend of ours."
Silijima didn't say anything in return, but Sargen spoke in her place. "Timothy, let's just get through lunch before you start inviting people to dinner."
Timothy shrugged, a smile on his face. "I understand. Just make sure you come tonight; Gabbie misses her
Goji."
Silijima had never seen a Gojid blush so deeply before. "Please don't use that name in public, it's degrading."
Timothy made a face that implied he obviously wasn't going to respect Sargen's request, causing the Gojid to fume.
To the right of Timothy was a Venlil female. She didn't wear anything except for a simple pearl necklace, but her fur was meticulously combed and groomed. She gave Silijima a soft, motherly smile, a smile that put her at ease.
"Don't mind the boys, dear, they're just acting like fools as usual. My name's Varka, one of the resident nurses under Dr. Kaczemeric." Venlil stuck out her paw, and Silijima was confused until she remembered to take Varka's hand. Varka simply giggled, obviously amused by Silijima not being used to human social norms. "It's nice to meet you too, dear. Why don't you sit down next to me? Carphano and I are probably less intimidating than our human friends."
Varka gestured to the final crew member at the table, a male Harchen with a scar across his face. He waved as well, his side facing eyes droopy and full, as if he hadn't had much sleep recently. "My name's Carphano, communications officer, nice to meet you."
Silijima sat in between them, the feeling of being amongst a group of species she was familiar with making her feel much more comfortable. Sargen and Timothy were still arguing quietly, while Haran watched with an amused look on his face. Suddenly, she heard the loud and repeated
clinking of a spoon against a glass. Across the dining room, Igor stood on a podium made from inlaid mahogany, a bright snarling smile plastered on his face. "Friends! Today is a good day! In the past week, we made history!"
The entire dining hall went silent at the sound of his voice. This must be a man that commanded their respect.
"Five days ago, we returned from what may just be the greatest group liberation in Commonwealth history. Thirty two cruiser-class cattle ships were captured, their prisoners saved and their guards captured or killed. Today, the Coalition has finally given us the exact number of cattle liberated, as well as our cut of the spoils!"
The entire dining hall was dead silent, the anticipation palpable. Finally, Igor gestured to a man next to him, a shorter human with a thin brown mustache and olive skin. The man passed him a paper, which Igor opened like a giddy child receiving a birthday card. Finally, he read the contents, his snarl only growing.
"The final number of liberated cattle was… one hundred and twenty-two thousand, three hundred and seventy four; the largest liberation in history."
The entire room broke into cheers, aliens of all races holding each other and yelling. It was pandemonium, but Silijima couldn't help but join the crowd, both the news and her herd instincts causing her to join in with triumphant squawks. The idea of saving over a hundred thousand sentients from slavery was so incredible that it invoked a euphoria inside of her that she hadn't felt for a long time.
Igor gestured for the crowd to quiet down, and as they did so he spoke up again. "We must remember, however, that this was not only our doing. We must congratulate our comrades who assisted us, all seven ships, their crews and captains, as well as mourn those who were lost while fighting for the freedom of others." With that statement, Igor held up a small glass of the clear liquid, as did many of the crew members. Then, he shouted at the top of his lungs
"mortem tyrannis et oppressoribus!" Before downing the liquid in a few gulps and slamming the glass onto the podium with a loud
thump. The rest of the crew followed suit, the largest arxur to the tiniest dossur drinking and shouting the motto Igor had proclaimed. Silijima didn't have a glass, so she just watched expectantly, waiting for Igor to continue.
"Now, for the part all of you have been waiting for; payroll. Even after the Coalition took their cut, and we split the profit eight ways, we made out like bandits. Needless to say, you'll all be getting the maximum bonus on top of your commissions."
More cheering, even louder this time. Silijima didn't blame them; Igor seemed like a good boss if he was giving out the maximum bonus for a job well done. Even Sargen had a bright smile on his face, as if he was already planning on what he was going to spend the money on.
"And finally, our future work; we won't be taking part in any liberation fleets any time soon. Instead, the Coalition sees fit to assign us on a defensive rotation, so it should be a calm few weeks. This means that if you've been on a few back to back missions, you should go home and rest for the month. Spend time with your family, or vacation planetside for all I care; God knows you all need it after our last victory. The rest of you; be prepared to take off on Friday and be space-born for at least a week at a time. And be prepared for a fight; NeoSec has detected a small Farsul fleet in the area, at least five thousand ships. Nothing cataclysmic, mind you, but still a worthy challenge."
There was murmuring now, people discussing the change of pace and whether they liked it or not. From the corner of her eye, she saw Sargen practically pouting, arms crossed and eyes refusing to make contact with Timothy's. Timothy, to his credit, seemed very pleased with himself.
"So hun, what brings you to our little slice of chaos?" Asked Timothy, eyes twinkling. He took another sip of his drink, a bottle of soda so green it almost looked radioactive. He seemed really nice, like a preacher, but without any of the feelings of hesitation she'd get from speaking to one. He lightly tapped the wedding band on his ring finger against the neck of the green glass bottle, causing it to make light clicking noises.
"I uhh… I wanted to get away from Nishtal. Too much is going on there for me to be comfortable with."
Timothy nodded. "That explains why you came to the Commonwealth, but not why you decided to become a Corsair. It's not an easy life, you know."
Silijima pondered his query for a second before responding. "Military life is all I know. When I finished secondary school I joined the navy because I had nothing better to do, but now that I'm out I can't imagine any other life. Sure, it's hard, and especially dangerous, but without that certainty and structure that I get from being on a warship, I feel lost."
Timothy nodded, his face becoming a little somber. "I understand that feeling. I'm ex-military, although I didn't see much combat. Getting out is the hardest thing I've ever done, although I'm pretty sure I never really left the service, I just changed who I served."
Silijima nodded. "It's refreshing to talk to someone who understands. That life… it changes you, and not for the better. Everyone at home, well, they're scared of me, they say I'm diseased and it's a matter of time before they throw me into some clinic where they drug and shock me until my brain melts. Even the people I served with, if they weren't already taken away for 'treatment' then they're too terrified to say anything because we don't know who we can trust."
For the first time since she had met him, Timothy didn't seem amused or amicable. He had a deep frown on his face and his eyebrows were bent downwards, an expression she had been told meant anger. She backed away a little, but he held up his hand. "I'm not mad at you, it's just the idea of an entire society treating those who risk their lives to protect them like dirt is despicable. On earth, we celebrate our heroes, not vilify them."
Silijima nodded. "In a perfect world maybe, but I'm used to it."
"But that's the problem; you shouldn't have had to live like that, in fear of the same people you swore to protect… it's not right."
"Maybe, but what's done is done. I left Nishtal and now I'm here, so maybe I can experience that respect for once."
"You don't have to hope, because I
know you will. The people here are different, even the former feds, you'll see."
And with that uplifting though, dinner began. Polina and her assistants, two Venlil and a Sikvit, rolled out massive wheeled tables filled to the brim with different steaming pots, pans and bowls containing all kinds of food. To her dismay, there was meat on the table, but there was also a section entirely dedicated to vegetarian dishes, and it was even longer than the table dedicated to meat.
Some of the naval staff ran up to help, with Polina shooing them away stubbornly. They simply ignored her and helped anyway, rolling the tables to the far wall next to the kitchen. Soon, a massive feast was gathered, with over two dozen tables of all sorts of human delicacies.
The crew quickly made their way to the tables, forming lines at each. Plates, bowls and cups were passed out by the kitchen staff, and soon people began piling their plates high with all sorts of food. Sargen had two whole bowls of what seemed to be a deep red colored stew, which she first foolishly assumed was blood, but quickly realized was just the liquid taking on the red color of the beets and cabbage. Timothy had a bowl of hearty cabbage stew that she had learned was called
Schi and a shallow plate of small, ear-shaped dumplings on the side called
Pelmeni, swimming in a fragrant broth and topped with a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkling of black pepper. There were other dishes, so many that Silijima couldn't count them all, but she was introduced to many of them by Timothy when he led her up there to get her a plate. There was all sorts of vegetarian dishes for her to try, ranging from cold soups like
Svekolnik, Okroshka and
Botvinyah, all sorts of salads with based on salted pickles and beetroots, several variations of hot soups like
Schi and
Borscht, Vareniki dumplings, farmers cheese shaped into cakes and shallow fried and so much more. Timothy insisted on making sure she got her fill, so he made her plate for her, filling her a bowl of Svekolnik and some Vareniki dumplings on the side with
Smetana and black pepper. Only then did he let her sit down, after he quickly said grace, of course. Silijima didn't know what saying grace meant exactly, but she guessed that it involved them thanking their strange human God for their food, which felt anything but predatory.
Timothy took a bite of his Pelmeni. "So, how're you liking the station so far? Anything peak your interest?"
Silijima chuckled. "Everything, actually. This place is so unique and alien compared to anything in the Federation; it makes me think about what my species would be like if the Federation hadn't erased our old culture."
Timothy gave her a small smile, but she could tell he was troubled. "And you don't mourn for that lost culture?"
Silijima paused, thinking about his question. "I suppose I do sometimes. The idea of us being freer and less… inane with our thinking really strikes me as a wonderful change of pace. I could never see myself as an omnivore… no offense!"
But Timothy wasn't offended. "I don't blame you for not suddenly being enamored with omnivore; the same happened with cloned meat on earth. A bunch of elites tried to make cloned meat the rule and not the exception through all sorts of government restrictions and subsidization schemes. All these rich influencers and wealthy magnates who can still afford to buy the real thing, and still do to this day mind you, told us how we were supposed to live and what we were supposed to do, that we were supposed to sacrifice while they enjoyed every luxury imaginable. To this day it doesn't sit well with a lot of people on the station."
Suddenly, Silijima's mouth dried up and her appetite disappeared. "You guys don't clone meat here?"
Timothy shook his head. "Nope, not a single pound. In fact, it's been lawfully and democratically voted into illegality by the citizens of the station, to protect our cattle farmers planetside. Most humans on earth aren't vegan and vegetarian by choice; it's really expensive to buy meat because of meat cloning, and that was before the war and the deals with the Arxur. Now you have to be vegan because of the massive decrease in available cattle. That doesn't stop the rich from eating their fill though."
Silijima looked away, internal disgust battling moral indecision. On one hand, the idea of eating live cattle was far more disgusting to her than cloned meat, but on the other hand she understood his metaphor clear as day; it was about the Commonwealth and the Federation. "You support cattle farming not because it's better, but because it benefits humans more."
"It's not about 'you' or 'me', Silijima, it's about 'us' and 'them'. At the end of the day, a government is supposed to represent everyone and see to their requests, not what the government thinks they need or want. That also means everyone should be equal under that representation, and not that the rich and wealthy should receive all the attention and benefits while the lives of you and I get harder and harder. Sadly, people had to learn the hard way that when you give governments the right and the power to provide you with everything, suddenly they provide you with nothing. Medical care, for example, started out as a right after the satellite wars. It quickly became a privilege for the 'good citizens' who voted the right way, and said the right things, and if you didn't suddenly you got a bill in the mail for hundreds of thousands of dollars for your daughter's chemotherapy, stating that you had waived your right to state-sponsored medical care the moment you chose to practice your right to free speech in a way that was deemed
unsavory by the UN." Timothy looked straight at her, his eyes boring into her soul, and she quickly realized that he was speaking from experience.
"What are you getting at," Silijima stated hastily, nervous over Timothy's sudden change in tone.
"What I'm getting at, Silijima," he stated, his eyes downcast as he ate another dumpling, "Is that rights shouldn't come with caveats. Just like you shouldn't be punished for coming back a changed woman after you dutifully served your people, I shouldn't have my daughter used against me for practicing what should be a universal right. Unchecked power is a cancer, and the Commonwealth was created to prevent that from ever coming into being."
Silijima mulled over what he said. Would humans really do that to each other in the name of power? Deprive each other of basic rights? Silijima was used to the Federation deceiving her people, but what punches had humanity pulled in the name of retaining power.
"Timothy, if I may ask, what is humanity
really like?"
Timothy chuckled. "What made you think I implied we were any different from what the UN had shown you?"
"The reveal of my species' former omnivory, and your statement about caveats and free speech. You made it sound like humanity was hiding something."
Timothy sighed, obviously weary. "It isn't humanity that's hiding anything, Silijima; it's the UN. They want you to think that they were all these wonderful, misunderstood balls of cloud fluff. In reality we're assholes. We hate each other with a passion and we're not afraid to show it. War, racism, misogyny and misandry, prejudice; we'll find a way to hate each other even if it's impractical because we need some great enemy to battle or otherwise we'll start asking questions, questions that will be of a detriment to the UN. The rich and powerful used this for a long time to make us forget we were fighting a class war and not a culture war. They made us enemies of each other because of how strong our convictions could be."
Silijima's heart sank. She had guessed as much.
But Timothy wasn't done. "Before you start judging us too harshly, I'd like to add that the pendulum swings both ways. Humans, we often hate each other, but we can be even more passionate. We live, we love, and we protect those who dedicate themselves to our cause with a fury like no other. And even though we have problems with our many differences, we are equally able to see beyond it when the reality of how petty it is is presented to us. And to me, Silijima, you aren't a Krakotl; you're family, and there's no bond stronger than family."
Silijima considered whether she liked that or not. Then she realized that her standards had been far surpassed. These strange primates had been everything she hoped for and more. She figured she could pull a human and looked past their differences from now on.
"I'd like that," she said, tears welling up in her eyes. "I'd like that very much."
Timothy smiled again, that bright, mischievous smile, and for once she wasn't alarmed or frightened. She was comforted. "I'm glad you do. But there's something else I wanted to tell you. There's a city from my old nation, and at the entrance of that city stands a great statue. Most of it was obliterated during the bombing, but one piece remained; the plaque. It read as followed;"
Then Timothy spoke poetry that reached into Silijima's soul, and her tears became unbearable. She cried as he spoke it, as if they were the words she wished to hear all her life, a promise that could set her free.
"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”" "We took the plaque with us when we fled, I helped carry it myself," Timothy said, a shadow of a smile formed on his lips, as if he was reminiscing the moment, "they're still demanding it back to this day, which is why we welded it to the wall behind the seats of our council chambers; the UN doesn't deserve it back, they lost the right to speak those words long ago. But the message is universal; you are welcome here, as is your family, and you will not be silenced or suppressed. We want you at your best, and we are willing to deal with your worst. All we ask is that you have an open mind, and do the same for us."
Silijima nodded, tears streaming from her eyes. "I can do that."
Timothy's smile grew even brighter, and he wrapped his arm around Sargen's shoulder, pulling him in close. "Then I'm sure me and my family would gladly welcome you, isn't that right Sargen?"
"Hmmmkmfh?" Sargen said, confused and with his mouth full of borscht. Silijima laughed, and for the first time in years the stress that had built up in her chest was gone. She was free. She was where she belonged.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I'm back. This is officially the end of the first Gunbirb Saga. I won't be focusing on Silijima for a while because I'll be focusing on other places, and other topics. The Galaxy of Interloper is even bigger than the standard NOP galaxy, and I've got so much to show you (; I posted the first chapter of the next Part prematurely: that was a mistake on my part but I was dying to write more about Dojur and his consolidation of power. The next five or so chapters will be of a very different tone than the first five, much darker but also filled to the brim with Arxur and Dominion worldbuilding about culture, religion and daily life. If you like what I've written so far, and you like my terrible writing and my inane worldbuilding, go check out other stories that I've written: Waking Dreams: An insane pokemon/bleach crossover, and my first real attempt at writing something. It's a long story that's nowhere near finished, and it's got the deep worldbuilding that I'm not really known for [:
The Spider's Stronghold: Another insane fanfic crossover between Pathfinder and PJO, primarily Jason-centric. Take that as you will.
I also just wanted to thank everyone who either helped with this story or gave me support in the form of art (That would be u/BushBacon69 ) Or simply taking the time to comment ( u/A_Tank_With_Internet, u/AcceptableEgg5560, u/bltsrgewd,
u/WonderfulMagpie,
u/se05239, and others.) Thank you all; without the motivation you all have given me, I wouldn't have finished this fic.

2023.06.11 01:37 Greatingsburg [Discussion] Bonus Book: The Vampire Lestat, Part 7, Ch 12 - End
Welcome back, fellow travelers on the Devil's Road! 🛣️
This week, like Lestat, we are early risers and have moved forward the check-in before everything goes dark on June 12th. No idea what I'm talking about? Check out this
announcement.
What a journey! This book has not only covered great distances, but also centuries of time. I hope you enjoyed the ride, and I am curious to see what you think of this section in the comments!
Some admin from my side: Since
Those Who Must Be Kept and
The Mother and The Father are ridiculously long nicknames, I will refer to Akasha and Enkil as "OG vampires". Also, I'll continue to refer to everything related to mind powers as ESP.
Today's discussion covers Part 7, Ch 12 - End per the schedule. Want to see or write comments outside the weekly discussions? Check out the
Marginalia. Beware the spoilers. 👀
Let’s raise the curtain one last time for our very own Lelio of the vampire world:
Chapter 12. After stealing the OG vampires from the Egyptian coven, Marius buys them fancy mummy cases and buries them in his backyard for the time being. This doesn't go unnoticed, and soon the Elder appears and demands that Marius bring them back. They butt heads, first figuratively and then literally. Marius makes the perfectly rational choice of squeezing his eyes back into his head with his thumbs. Their fight is broken up when Akasha unearths herself. She pins the Elder and then squashes him like a cockroach. As a finishing touch, she pours lamp oil over the goo and burns the remains. Then she ESPs Marius that he will always be safe with her if he becomes her new guardian. She also encourages him to drink from her so that his wounds will heal and they can leave Alexandria. Marius succumbs to her seductive powers.
Chapter 13. Drinking Akasha's blood is absolute ecstasy for Marius. It also gives him memories of Akasha.
(Note: I would like to inform everyone that we are now in a flashback of a flashback of a flashback) He experiences epic vampire battles, vampires behaving like gods and demanding human sacrifices brought by human slaves from all over the world. Babylon. Assyria. Forgotten cities
(Note: Atlantis?). Marius disapproves because of his western ideals. He sees these epic vampires (dark gods) imprisoning the OG vampires so they can feed on them. Eventually they refuse human blood, but their strength continues to grow. Enough time passes that no one remembers that they are actually imprisoned. They are freed, but their appearance has become that of statues.
Vampires, or "The Drinkers of the Blood", are still worshipped as gods. The sacrifices were thought to be evil people and the vampires their good gods. But then times changed and Egypt was conquered and those ideals changed.
(Note: This is the end of the flashback3) Marius is restored. He dreams of rescuing/restoring/un-traumatizing the OG vampires (insert "I can fix them" meme here) and imagines all the great things they will do together.
They go to Antioch, but for over a century nothing changes except the color of their skin. Marius falls madly in love with a Greek courtesan named Pandora. He turns her into a vampire and she feeds on Akasha. They live together for 200 years. Under Christianity, vampires become devils. So much so that some vampires even believe it (
eherm Children of Darkness). Marius hopes that humanity will evolve into an age of enlightenment without gods and goddesses, thus devaluing vampires. In the eighteen hundred years that Marius has lived, he has found no true purpose.
Chapter 14. Lestat is now aware that Marius could wipe them all out just like that, since he is responsible for the OG vampires. He also thinks about rousing them. Marius assures him that he has no intention of killing them or himself, that he is content to experience humanity. According to him, this is only possible because he has lived a full life, and he urges Lestat to do the same, to go away and live a life (in New Orleans) before returning to him. He also reveals that he regrets turning Armand into a vampire in his youth, even going so far as to see Armand's foolish behavior as punishment.
Some general Marius approved rules to living your vampire life:
- Every new vampire made will be weaker than the previous one
- If a vampire drinks from the OG vampires, they will become more powerful
- Strength should come with time, so it’s better to start off as a weak vampire
- You never know what your child turns out like. Don't fret over it.
- Choose companions that you love (physical attraction doesn't hurt either)
- Keep your fledglings as human as possible, and create a family, not a coven.
- Only turn people into vampires that have had a life, never as young as Armand
They contemplate something ominous could happen if Akasha were to become loose. Marius floats the idea in the room that Lestat could drink Akasha’s blood, it would make him stronger, heal existing wounds, but not wounds made after the “injection”. They decide that they’ll humbly ask Akasha to let Lestat drink from her blood.
Before that, however, is a lot of vampire lore exposition Marius gives Lestat by the by:
- Ghosts exist!
- Immortals that don’t drink blood and can walk in daylight exist. One of them is Ramses the Damned. They are dangerous. Marius and Pandora have a difference of opinion if these things were at any point vampires.
- When vampires are burnt, Marius suspects they come back in another form. Possibly they are reborn as humans. Pandora claims she’s been one of the burnt vampires.
Marius promises they’ll meet again after Lestat has lived his lifetime. He also tells him he will move to another place to keep the OG vampires safe. He makes Lestat swear to tell no one about their existence or anything he’s told him. He vaguely threatens Lestat if he breaks his promise (but not really).
Lestat feels oppressed by the secrecy required of vampires and floats the idea in the room telling the world about vampires. Marius strongly rejects this, calling it madness, because vampires are solitary creatures who like privacy.
“We are evil things finally,” says the vampire who pages before stated there is no such thing as good or evil.
They embrace and part ways.
Lestat silently ponders how he would behave in a thousand years, and if he was a statue by then, too. Before he loses consciousness, he hears a woman’s laugh and sees a woman’s neck bending.
Chapter 15. Lestat has a great idea. He sneaks into the OG vampires’ chamber and plays Nicki’s violin FOR THE FIRST TIME, WHILE SINGING. Akasha (understandably) lets out a head-exploding shriek and crushes the violin in front of Lestat. Then she lets Lestat drink from her, and this somehow turns into a makeout session. This is interrupted by a jealous Enkil who grabs Lestat and is about to stomp him to death, only to be saved by Marius ESPing to Enkil that he would take Akasha away from him if he kills Lestat. Then Marius ESPs to Lestat to go (good advice), which Lestat does.
Chapter 16. Lestat apologizes for what he has done, but Marius doesn't buy it. Lestat is convinced that Enkil is the worst thing that has ever happened to Akasha, and he wants him gone. When Marius scolds Lestat for his uninhibited thoughts, Lestat begins to cry. He wants Marius to let Akasha go, but Marius instead urges Lestat to leave the island for the night and not return until just before dawn, and to stop thinking about Akasha. After the hunt, Lestat does just that, imagining him and Akasha in a palace in Germany.
When he comes back, Marius tells him to leave for good, so that Enkil can quiet down. Marius' final advice is that he’ll find him when the time is right and that he can always ESP Marius
(Note: Mother hen Marius confirmed).
Chapter 17. We are in New Orleans! Enchanted by the beautiful scenery, Lestat reflects on ancient truths and ancient magic, revolution and invention, and the nostalgic feeling of childhood.
Epilogue: Interview with the Vampire. Chapter 1. Lestat concludes his backstory by calling it
The Early Education and Adventures of the Vampire Lestat. Now we get some addendum to what happened in “Interview with the Vampire”:
Lestat never saw Marius or Gabrielle again. He acknowledges some (some?) mistakes he made, but calls it all a direct result of his fatal love he has for Louis (who is btw a carbon copy of Nicki). They lived together for almost 70 years, which is groundbreaking (apparently not counting Marius' and Pandora's 200 years). Turning Claudia so young was a bad decision, but she would have died if he hadn't turned her (same goes for Louis) ... is Lestat's reasoning. Also, all the people he killed were bad people. Also, also, Louis begged him ALL THE TIME not to leave.
Some backhanded compliments he gives Louis are:
- Lestat forgives Louis for the lies, mistakes, excess of imagination, bitterness, vanity
- Lestat never revealed his powers because Louis shriveled in guilt and self-loathing already by half of the skills he had
- Louis must have low self-esteem for never believing Lestat chose him for his character, not his money
- He calls him a discriminating and inhibited child of the middle class for believing Lestat a peasant
- He calls him the most beguiling human fiend, not even imaginable to Marius.
After almost getting killed two times by Claudia, he doesn't turn to Marius for fear of condemnation, Gabrielle was AWOL. Left is Armand.
He tells Armand what happened, but Armand is already well aware of Louis and dresses up a weakened Lestat and uses him in his plot to get rid of Claudia. The previous vampires from the theater are all gone. When he asks about Louis, Armand tells him that he is also dead. Then Armand emotionally explodes, blaming Lestat for destroying the coven and driving them to perform in a theater. Finally he throws Lestat off the tower, breaking every bone in his body on impact.
Chapter 2. After two years, Lestat is strong enough to board a ship back to Louisiana. He draws a parallel to Gabrielle being locked in a tower. He reads a lot and sometimes meets other vampires, but he is too weak to do anything. Eventually, Armand visits him and tells him that Louis is not really dead. At this point, they are both very salty about each other, and they continue to bicker like unhappy neighbors for some time. Armand promises to give him some of his blood if Lestat promises to love him, but Lestat has only contempt for Armand.
(Note: This feels very similar to the song Gives You Hell). Finally, he decides to go into the earth. He dreams of Marius as a photographer. Of his new building of twentieth century impressionists. He shows the OG vampires a movie. Akasha speaks to him to come to her, but Lestat is too weak.
Dionysus in San Francisco - 1985. Chapter 1. Despite secrecy over the rock band, vampires leave messages on Lestat’s answering machine, calling him an outcast and daring him to come out. He feels lonely. The band is about to perform in San Francisco. He fears Marius’ wrath. MMarius speaks to him in his dream, accusing him of risking his revenge and acting impulsively. Then a sudden transmission says, “Danger. Danger to us all.”
Louis visits him. They embrace and make up
(Note: Yes, Louis has read the book). He tries to dissuade him from the concert, but Lestat’s mind is made up. He doesn’t fear vampires that need to use telephones to communicate threats. Also, he wants to be Lelio again.
Louis tells him about bars that function as vampire connections, where vampires meet to exchange gossip. All the young vampires imitate the characters in his memoirs. New Orleans has no active vampire connection because it is Armand's territory and he has killed all the young ones. However, Armand has been missing for some time.
Also, the rules for vampires are now stricter. No evidence of killing is allowed. And their existence must remain a secret. Louis agrees to come with him to the concert...
but not in those clothes, a fashion-conscious Lestat chides.
Chapter 2. Everyone is super stoked for the concert, outside video screens and speakers have been mounted for the fans that didn’t get tickets. Lestat gushes over Louis' makeover. The concert itself is utter madness and euphoria. And Lestat sweats blood again. He draws parallels to past groups and people (the Keltoi, the Romans, …) and notices real vampires in the crowd.
When the concert is over and they are walking to their car, they are attacked by vampires with scythes. Before they can do anything, the attacking vampires burst into flames. They are pulled into the car by none other than Gabrielle! Lestat believes that Marius is behind the explosions. A chase with a van ensues, and Lestat finally understands the gravity of the situation. They are hit by the van and the car explodes. The vampires narrowly escape death. Other attack vampires appear with scythes, but they combust yet again before they can strike. Lestat wants to fight them like a fool, but Louis and Gabrielle stop him.
Gabrielle repeats that they are all in danger.
Chapter 3. The vampires are back at the house and speculate who could be behind the combustions. Gabrielle doesn’t believe Marius would do this, since it feels like an alien and savage force. Lestat is just stoked to have his favorite vampire fledglings back and tattempts to reassure them that he was in control the whole time. Gabrielle calls Lestat an imp.
Just before bedtime, Lestat muses on the strange transmissions. He tries to ESP Marius and receives a broken signal from Marius telling him exactly what the transmissions had told him: They were all in danger. We learn that Marius is buried in ice and that Akasha has seen and heard his music through the television that Marius set up. Akasha caused the combustions.
Lestat feels a cold hand reach out and caress his face before he loses consciousness.
That's it, folks, the curtains are closed on The Vampire Lestat. 🏁

2023.06.11 01:17 No_Sink_5264 It genuinely boggles my mind to see that people genuinely think that Yuseong vs Johan ended in a draw.
Let’s go in depth a little. Something I like to use when comparing fights is what I call statistics, or for short, HT/HM/OHBD.
HT/HM/OHBD stands for Hits Thrown/Hits Made/ Opponent Hits Blocked or Dodged.
For context, when I do Johan, it’s going to be the amount of hits Johan threw, the amount of hits that landed on Yuseong, and the amount of attacks Yuseong threw that Johan either blocked or dodged.
All that being said, let’s get into this.
KEEP IN MIND, THIS IS ONLY FOR UI JOHAN VS YUSEONG.
Johan’s HT/HM/OHBD was:
8/7/2 (For OHBD, 1 of them was the momentum used for his roundhouse kick).
This is an extremely good ratio. This means that out of the 8 hits that Johan threw, 7 of them landed on Yuseong.
For Yuseong, his HT/HM/OHBD was:
4/2/1
This is a horrible ratio. This means that during the entire fight Yuseong was only able to throw 4 attacks and was only able to land 2 of them. He also only dodged 1 hit out of the 8 that Johan threw.
But let’s go even further into depth.
Johan has a 50% chance to dodge whatever Yuseong throws at him, 87.5% (88%) chance to hit Yuseong.
Meanwhile, Yuseong only has a 33% chance to hit Johan while he’s in UI and a 50% chance to hit him while he gets out of UI (1 of the hits Yuseong landed was when Johan lost UI, so it was just out of inconvenience).
This doesn’t even account for 4 things.
- This doesn’t account for the fact that Yuseong literally didn’t even have a chance to attack until Johan let his guard slip (he was feeling the energy of Yuseong’s desperation, therefore distracting himself mentally and in turn distracting himself physically).
- This doesn’t account for Johan’s systema barrage which I counted as 1 hit. This would up Johan’s attacks thrown to 12, his attacks landed to 11, and his chance to hit Yuseong up to 91.6% (92%).
- This doesn’t account for the attacks that happened off screen (there were likely attacks that Johan made during the flashback and landed successfully).
- This doesn’t account for the power difference in their attacks. Yuseong’s attacks didn’t slow Johan down at all, the entire fight was just Johan knowing he can finish Yuseong off and Eugene realizing how much stronger Johan is. Johan was constantly making Yuseong bleed, slamming him into concrete and him aiming for his vital spots, such as when his crescent kick landed on Yuseong’s organ and when his flying kick landed on his neck/side of the head (yes, even though it looks like his shoulder you can clearly see by the way Yuseong’s head and hair are drawn it’s his neck. This is why it was so easy to wrap the same foot he used for this attack around the back of the neck for his next attack). Even Yuseong knew how strong Johan was just by his presence when he went into UI. This is why Yuseong stopped mid attack and Ryuhei had to stop Eugene from helping him, because both of them realized how dangerous Johan was.
To add insult to injury, Eugene literally openly admits that Johan won via saying “Do you know who you just defeated? (Blah blah blah blah blah)… my brother.”
So yeah, this wasn’t a tie.
Now let’s go over some common misconceptions.
- “They tied because both of them collapsed.”
This is wrong. Yuseong collapsed because he was completely beat down and nearly died to Johan’s roundhouse kick. JOHAN collapsed because of the toll UI had on his body. NOT because of Yuseong’s fighting. Johan states in the chapter before that he has to fire up ALL of his muscles and ALL of his nerves in order to physically copy UI Daniel’s perfect body. He literally states that he’s putting EVERYTHING on the line, meaning he’s putting his life at risk by doing this.
This is why Johan has this brief moment of not being able to move before getting up and regaining his perfect body, because the 10 second limit had reached it’s time. He got up when he regained his perfect body and threw the roundhouse kick.
So yeah, this is wrong.
- “Yuseong blocked CQC Johan’s attack therefore he won the fight.”
First of all, this wasn’t UI Johan. When people like me talk about UI Johan we are not talking about Johan before or after he gains UI. We’re talking about when he HAS UI. CQC Johan was just base fatigued (yes, fatigued because of the physical toll of UI) Johan using CQC. Not UI Johan.
Now let’s go more in depth as to why it would still be wrong.
When Yuseong “got up,” it wasn’t him getting up. Eugene helped him up and carried Yuseong’s limp body. When Johan was using his CQC, Eugene was holding Yuseong. Meaning the distance between him and Yuseong was literally 0. He was right next to him. Therefore this isn’t a feat that Jihan’s attack got “blocked” by Yuseong. Because Yuseong literally just slumped over. He didn’t do anything to actually block the attack, he just slumped over. It doesn’t mean he won.
- “Yuseong got up after UI Johan so he won.”
No he didn’t. Yuseong HIMSELF did not get up. It was Eugene who had to pick him up and carry him. That doesn’t mean he got up, it was Eugene doing the work. Not Yuseong. I said this in the point above I believe.
- “Yuseong tanked the attacks.”
I normally laugh when I see this argument. Yuseong most definitely did NOT tank the attacks. Dude was literally crying mid fight from how much Johan’s attack hurt him. Tanking an attack is something that’s shown often with Zack or Gun. Being able to take a hit with no visual effect or physical damage. Sure you can argue that it would help out his endurance, but that doesn’t change the fact that in the end Yuseong still lost.
So yeah, all that being said, this wasn’t a tie. This was a beatdown.
If you disagree with anything I said feel free to address it in the comments or make your own post and tag me in it.
Might make a post later about the majority of y’all’s bad takes on how Johan and Yuseong are “weak.” (They’re both top 5 in gen 2. And Johan is literally top 5 in the current verse with his statement that correlates to UI Daniel).

2023.06.11 00:35 RabideauPublishing Ambassador Laen
Chapter 1
For decades, humans and a dozen other races expanded through local star systems, competing against each other but never gaining a significant enough advantage to allow one to dominate.
This continued until the Dominion arrived. A massive ship flew through known space, indifferent to the calls of inhabitants. Making no attempt at first contact, the ship ignored all sentients in its path, passing through every battle line unscathed, and instead dropped a mining station in a white dwarf star. Shortly after, a Dominion base was established in an nearby uninhabited system.
Confused, the humans and other races continued their attempts to communicate with the obviously vastly superior technology. Other Dominion ships came and went, often under military guard, but paid no attention to the line of ships outside their base and the sublight radio waves they were transmitting.
Finally, the commander must have gotten tired of seeing ships milling around and built a radio to initiate contact. He didn’t say much other than introducing himself and his race, and that it was their right as Class Two species to have a Dominion ambassador if they requested one. Despite the differences between the assembled aliens, they unanimously agreed.
A month later, Laen arrived from the Dominion.
The ambassador from Ultrua waved his tentacles around excitedly in the drab room. On the other side, seated in a comfortable but equally drab couch, the Dominion’s representative sat trying to focus on the words coming from the translator and not the non-sensible tentacle waving.
Laen nodded enthusiastically, trying to end the conversation. “Yes, ambassador, I agree completely. No, I can’t do that. Not even a little. Yes, as I previously mentioned—“
His next sentence was a little more excited than she liked and she dodged a tentacle that seemed aimed at her, although the translator on her arm assured her it meant ‘slime accumulated between shower tiles.’
“Ambassador, I realize Household Artificial Intelligence is your main export. No, I cannot authorize any trade of Dominion technology. Yes, I’m sure they’re very good machines—fine. I’ll take one.”
She almost immediately regretted agreeing to purchase something, as the Ultruin’s gesticulations became even faster. Laen struggled to keep up with the translator.
“Again, I can’t offer technology. How about…ah…umm…Gold! I’ll give you thirty tons of gold,” she said, suddenly remembering that the ambassador for the Achrans had promised that exact amount in exchange for a mineral survey of a nearby planet. She didn’t know what the market price for gold was in this sector, but she didn’t care. It was useless to the Dominion after they had moved to subspace quantum technologies centuries ago.
Judging from the way the Utruin was moving its entire body now, Laen guessed he was getting the better side of this deal.
“Yes sir, I agree. I’m happy we could come to an agreement. If you’ll excuse me, I have other duties to attend to.” She pointed to the door emphatically, and the ambassador reluctantly began oozing out of the room while continuing to jabber away in his native tongue. Or rather, tentacle.
“Yes, I’m sure. Wait no, just one. No, one unit, not one shipment.” She slammed the door closed after checking to make sure no tentacles were still inside the doorframe.
Laen fell on the couch, mildly hoping it would collapse and she would be seriously injured, just to bring some excitement to the day. She hated this. She had a promising career in a completely different field, and suddenly her life was turned around and sent to the darkest corner of the galaxy, just because some knuckle dragging squid who hadn’t figured out how to build nanoscopic singularities requested an ambassador.
She recognized the flaw in her last thought just as her wrist computer buzzed again. Angrily, she slapped the button. “What?”
The secretary recoiled on the screen, but remained professional. “Your next appointment is here.”
Laen forced herself to calm down. It wasn’t the secretary’s fault. In fact, she probably didn’t want to be here any more than Laen did. “Already? Did my last appointment go long?”
“I’m afraid so.” Laen wasn’t surprised. The Ultruin like to talk. Or punch. Whatever served as communication for his species.
“Alright send him in. Or her. Or it. Whatever comes through the door.” She ended the call and leaned back on the couch again, silently willing the supports to fail.
The door opened and a being two meters tall and relatively skinny stepped through. He seemed much more like what a proper sentient should look like. Her own race was not much different, except that she had blue skin. “You must be Laen. I am Bradley Cardot, the representative of the Human…” his voice trailed off as he saw the simple chair opposite the couch where Laen was seated, still covered in slime from the Utruin ambassador.
“I’m so sorry! Let me get a new one.” She activated her wrist computer. “Gren, I’m sorry to bother you,” she said apologetically, hoping it would make up for her outburst earlier. “The gentleman from the Human…sorry, who are you representing again?”
“The Human Confederation.”
“Right. Of course. Anyway, the chair is soaked and we need a new one. Can you grab one from…somewhere?” Her voice dropped almost to pleading. She couldn’t think of words any more. If anything else went wrong, she silently swore she would abandon all attempts of diplomacy and spend the rest of the day in a hot bath.
The secretary delivered a clean chair and dragged the soiled one out of the room, trails of slime following it. Laen suddenly had a horrible thought about where the ‘slime accumulated between shower tiles’ the Ultruins were so vehement about came from.
Mister Cardot sat in the clean chair and opened his briefcase as the door shut. “Miss Laen—I’m sorry, how do you wish to be called?”
“Laen is fine. It’s the only name I have, besides my social identifier number.”
“Right. Thank you again for seeing me. On behalf of the Human Confederation I’d like to welcome you and extend—“
“I cannot offer Dominion technology under any circumstances.” That was the first thing every diplomat asked for. Maybe she could save some time in this appointment and take a break before the next.
“I wasn’t…I didn’t finish…” The ambassador trailed off. Laen wished he would hurry up and leave. Her professional demeanor failed and she felt her face scowl as she tried and failed to keep smiling.
The human stared at her quizzically. “Are you okay?”
Laen was not prepared for that. “I’m sorry, what?”
“You don’t seem to be very happy right now. Is everything alright?”
She stared back for a few seconds. “No, it’s ‘fine’. Everything’s just peachy,” she bit out sarcastically. “You want to know how ‘fine’ this is?”
Bradley looked concerned, but she continued. The flood gates were open, and she was going to have her say.
“I didn’t want to be an ambassador! I was never interested in diplomacy or politics or xenos or any of that! I’m an accountant! Do you want to know how I got here?”
Bradley was silent.
“I was meeting a colleague in the government center. I walked past the door to the Executive Director of External Affairs and Relations Regulations Committee’s Record Keeper’s Assistant’s office, and the Record Keeper was in there talking to his assistant and he came out and almost bumped into me and he shoved an envelope at me and said ‘there’s a ship leaving the galaxy from dock one twenty four in fifteen minutes be on it and here’s everything you need to know.’” She was almost crying as she babbled.
The man had stayed perfectly still throughout her tirade. Laen hardly noticed as she launched into the next part. She had revealed too much, she thought. How would she fix this latest blunder? Hot tub for a day wouldn’t be enough. Not even a week. And what about Bradley Cardot? She didn’t even pause in telling him her deepest concerns. She couldn’t allow him to leave with that information. She would have to arrange an accident of some kind and get a new human ambassador. She had never killed or ordered anyone murdered before, and the thought made her stop mid-sentence.
She would have to consider how to deal with Bradley later. While she had a captive audience, she may as well spill her feelings, even if she had to kill him later to cover it up.
“Nobody cares. They never cared,” she said tiredly. “Do you know I had over a hundred coworkers? I was connected to the net during the whole trip. The only message I got the entire month I was traveling here was an automated mail to inform me of my job change.”
She turned around and dug through her bag. “See this pamphlet?” She held it up for him. It was a folded paper with a pleasing yellow color, titled “So You’ve been Conscripted to be an Ambassador? How to Avoid Embarrassing Yourself and the Dominion”. She tossed it to him and he broke his pose to catch it from the air. “That’s what they gave me to prepare me for this role. The Dominion doesn’t care about me enough to train me. They don’t care about you enough to send someone competent. There’s nothing you can offer them and they know it. I’m only here to satisfy some archaic rule somewhere.”
Bradley was flipping through the pamphlet. “This says you can order a preemptive strike against Class two civilizations!”
“Yeah, it does. Technically, beyond my presence and availability as a representative of the Dominion, you don’t have any rights at all. My contact at the Forms and Regulations for the Department of Ethical Treatment of Inferior Sentients and Species told me which forms to fill out to have any inhabited planet here glassed by the military with no questions asked, and no one back home would even blink. I could make myself the governor of all your planets and parade Dominion military ships around as long as I had the right documents to make the captains go where I wanted.”
Bradley was oddly calm at the revelation, and continued to read the pamphlet unaware that she was still considering revoking his living privileges after the conversation.
Laen sat in the couch and continued while he read. “Our technology is so much more advanced than yours. I’m not trying to be insulting, that’s just how it is. Our two civilizations don’t need any of the same materials. We’re only in this galaxy to mine white dwarf stars, and you’re still scraping asteroids for resources. If you didn’t try and make contact, we could have lived in the same sector for decades and never crossed paths.”
The human ambassador nodded. “Our people have a theory called the Fermi Paradox. It’s basically what you just said, where an alien civilization is so advanced they have no interest in us, maliciously or otherwise.”
Laen nodded. “Just a few minutes ago, I traded thirty tons of gold for a robot that changes the thermostat! I don’t want a robot! I’ll probably dump it out the airlock without opening it.”
Bradley’s jaw dropped at the price of a House AI. “That’s quite a lot.” He closed the pamphlet. “Do you know what you need? A vacation.”
She was about to ask what that was when he pulled his own computer from his pocket and turned it on. Although it looked similar, she was certain it was ancient technology compared to hers.
“Check this out. This is a beach in the Bahamas.” He turned the screen to show her.
Every hot bath she had ever had paled in comparison to the paradise in front of her. She could tell the temperature of the vista just by the reflection of the sunlight on the water, which stretched to the horizon. Never on all the city planets she had lived on could she have imagined so much wasted space.
She could almost feel the water on her body, and had an intense urge to know what the sand would be like under her feet.
“It’s beautiful.”
“Come on. I’ll take you.”
“I can’t. I have my duties to attend to, and I think I have to be impartial.”
“Not at all. Like you said, the Dominion doesn’t care what you do. You can even accept bribes.”
That made her pause. “Really?”
“Yeah. It was in the manual. Page fourteen, I think.”
“It explicitly said that?”
“From ‘unenlightened civilizations with no relevance to the Dominion’, yes.” He opened the pamphlet and pointed to a paragraph.
“Wow. I must have dozed off for that part. But you’ll still use this as leverage in negotiations, or something. How do I know I can trust you?”
He looked at her with something she couldn’t quite understand. Maybe pity, or compassion. “You said no one cares about you, that you weren’t important. I’m telling you that you are important. To everyone in this sector, you are the most important person in the universe. You have the fates of billions in your hands, even if they belong to Class two civilizations. We have to trust you to do the best you can.”
When she didn’t say anything he continued. “If you look upwards to the Dominion, you’ll find what you said is true. You and your job are completely irrelevant to them. But we, who you’ve been placed in charge of, care very much about you. Even if it’s only in our best interest.” He smiled. “I’ll make sure your trip isn’t interrupted with any diplomacy stuff. Unless you’d like some actual training.”
She laughed. “That would give you a huge advantage against everyone else in the sector.”
Bradley only smiled.
Laen nodded. She knew he was just diplomatic, being nice to the person with big guns behind her, but right now she didn’t care. “Alright. Let’s go.”
“Right now?”
“Yeah.” She activated her wrist computer. “Gren? Cancel all my appointments for the next month. I’m going with Mister Cardot. And use my diplomatic credit to treat yourself to something.”
One week later.
Laen was sprawled on the beach, her knees soaking in the gentle waves while her back relaxed in the heat from the sand. She had made Bradley find the exact spot in the picture, and he assured her she was lying on the very grains of sand depicted.
The beach was deserted aside from her, a waiter holding a half empty cooler full of beverages, and two dozen armed guards hiding out of view.
She had no idea what day it was. Bradley had promised two weeks of uninterrupted relaxation, and true to his word no one was able to introduce themselves without going through both his bodyguards and hers. Just beyond the horizon, she was sure, swarms of boats still challenged the police blockade, but here it was completely peaceful.
An annoying buzzing wafted over the breeze from her cabin. She had brought her wrist computer on the chance she might need it, but she hadn’t looked at it once since she got here. There was no need for any communication, as far as she was concerned. She had told her ship she would be back in touch and that she hadn’t been kidnapped and there would be no need for the Dominion to abduct another passerby to maintain headcount.
It was nice here. She should leave the ship and set up shop on Earth. It would give the humans an unfair advantage but who cares?
She did. She cared. Bradley was the only one who cared enough to ask if she was okay. She could care about them in return.
Laen applied another layer of sunscreen purposefully designed for her blue skin and laid back on the sand, closing her eyes. She had almost fallen asleep when she suddenly bolted upright.
“I forgot to give the Ultruins their gold!”
Chapter 2
Laen walked onto the cramped bridge of her Dominion-issued diplomatic shuttle to see the full force of the Ultruin battle fleet arrayed before her.
The shuttle’s pilot, sitting in the chair on the left, greeted her with a wave before turning back to the controls with boredom. She couldn’t blame him. Nothing exciting was going to happen for a long time.
She wondered what she was wearing, but couldn’t risk taking the time to look. The only thing worse than showing up in your pajamas to a diplomatic incident was showing up in pajamas and then appearing embarrassed about it.
On screen, the Ultruin ambassador was gesticulating angrily, unaware that Laen had only now gotten up from her bed.
It didn’t matter. The Ultruan language was usually fast and chaotic, with multiple tentacles making signs at the same time. But now the ambassador was using a very formal, very slow pattern. The movements took long enough to communicate anything that a few minutes of skimming the text logs was enough to catch up on his ramblings.
Once she finished, she interrupted the Ultruin. “Thank you for that speech, ambassador, but there’s no need to declare war. I have your gold in an Achran bank. I will tell them to transfer it immediately.”
She let her mind wander while the translation of the alien’s words crawled across the screen. There was a lot of movement for so little communication. It took about fifty separate gestures to form one word. Why was this language so inefficient? She glanced at the screen again and saw he was only half finished with his sentence.
What was in the kitchen? The tiny shuttle boasted a one-square-meter kitchenette with all the amenities of a fourth-class restaurant in the middle of a random slum back home. There should be some leftover green paste, or was it the orange paste? If Gren ate all the green paste while Laen had been on vacation, she was going to have some harsh words for her.
Her mind came back to the moment to see the Ultruin staring at her silently. After a look at the text logs, she forced her nicest diplomatic smile for the being threatening her life.
“Again, I apologize for the delay, but surely if I add a late-payment fee to what I owe you we can leave as friends. It’s not as if you’ve delivered the AI either, right?”
The shuttle pilot cleared his throat. Laen glanced over at him. He was pointing at a cardboard box sitting in the co-pilot’s seat across the aisle. It had Ultruin shipping labels plastered all over it like a hobo’s attempt at wallpaper. Laen briefly wondered what address they used to ship it to her shuttle in the middle of empty space.
“Alright, so you have delivered the AI. But is thirty tons of gold really worth declaring war over?”
The Ultruin gestured some more. Laen leaned over to the pilot. “When we’re done here, toss the box out the airlock,” she whispered. The pilot nodded.
“Really? Wars of reimbursement are permitted for transactions over twenty thousand Konevs? And I suppose thirty tons of gold is more than twenty thousand?”
More gesturing.
“That’s great, but we surrender. We’re willing to hand over what we owe you. No need for hostilities, right?”
Still more gesturing. Where had she seen those movements before? Suddenly she remembered and now she couldn’t get the memories out of her head. The Sushi place with Mark had been a disaster. First of all he was as generic as possible, without a single defining trait. And then the giant tentacle monster the chefs were about to serve somehow escaped and gobbled Mark up. At least he wasn’t able to ask for a second date, and when the Dominion army finally dealt with the monster the sushi was surprisingly good, though slightly singed. Laen watched the Ultruin and wondered if he had any distant relatives in her home galaxy.
“Alright fine, have it your way.” She turned the viewscreen off and turned to the pilot. “In case you didn’t get that, the entire People’s Republic of Ultrua has declared war on me personally, and the Dominion by extension.”
“I didn’t, thanks. Was I supposed to be paying attention?”
“Nah. I was barely paying attention. So the Ultruins are just going to shoot at us for a while, and then maybe surrender. Tell me if something interesting happens.”
The pilot smirked. “Will do. Class twos, am I right?”
She stopped halfway through the hatch. “What is that supposed to mean?”
He pulled his helmet off so he could turn to face her. “They’re just so dumb! I don’t know why we bother talking to them at all.”
A wing of fighters blazed past the windows, peppering the skin of the craft with tiny kinetic slugs. Realizing the shuttle had no fighter defenses, the fighters slowly flew in front and emptied their magazines into the sitting shuttle. Inside the shuttle, of course, it was completely silent. Laen stepped back into the bridge to address the pilot.
“There are some very nice class two people I met. Just because their civilizations aren’t as old or as advanced as ours doesn’t mean they as individuals aren’t every bit as intelligent as your or I.”
“Ma’am, I don’t mean to insult you, but surely the Ultruins have spent more money on ammo in their little war than they could have made if they just took the gold.”
“The Ultruins might be a special case, but this is still the action of one man. Even with the support of his government. All the others in the fleet are just following orders. You can’t apply a generalization of one individual to an entire group.”
Megaton warheads splattered across the windshield like bugs. The glass automatically polarized to prevent ionizing radiation from reaching the passengers.
“Alright, alright, I’m sorry I insulted your friends. Happy?”
It was probably as good as she was going to get. “Close enough. And thank you for refraining from making that comment while the channel was open.”
The pilot laughed. “No kidding. Do I look like a class two?” A horrified look crossed his face as he realized he made the same joke a second time. “No, I’m sorry. I just-“
Laen smiled. “It’s fine.” She gestured to the light show outside. “Let me know when they get bored.”
Walking back to her room, she stopped at the refresher station to check the mirror. She sighed contentedly. Sometimes, success was not showing up to a declaration of war wearing pajamas. Today’s definition of success meant forgetting to change into pajamas from yesterday’s clothing, and wearing that to a declaration of war instead.
She would take whatever victory she could, especially because Gren had indeed eaten all the green paste and left Laen with the disgusting orange stuff.
Bradley Cardot, the human ambassador looked surprised. “They just opened fire? Then what?”
Laen shrugged and reached across the table for a pitcher of cool-aid. They were sitting in an empty room at a high-end human restaurant reserved for diplomatic events. Being able to order almost any drink known to humanity, Laen naturally chose cool-aid. “I grabbed a snack and went back to bed until they stopped.”
“That’s it? How did it end?”
“After a few hours, I had my pilot fire a warning shot through a small moon. They surrendered after that.”
“What happened to the Household AI? And the thirty tons of gold?”
“According to the document they signed, I returned the AI for a full refund. However, the whole thing started because I forgot to give them the gold, and the Ultruins don’t have thirty tons of their own. To process the whole transaction I have to pay them the original sum, without interest, and then they will refund it back to me.”
Bradley was clearly questioning the mental capacities of the people involved in the surrender document.
“It was seriously the only thing we could agree on. I was ready to give them both the AI and the gold just to get out of the talks a few hours early, but they wouldn’t have it.”
“That does sound like them. It’s still troubling, though. You shouldn’t have been in battle. Doesn’t the Dominion have a military ship you could have called for backup?”
“Well yeah, but I wasn’t in any danger. All Dominion ship hulls are statically placed.”
“What does that mean?”
Laen paused. “You seriously don’t know? As in Universal Static Positioning?”
Bradley shook his head.
“The molecules of the hull are in a form of stasis locked to relative ship position. Nothing except weaponry or tools designed to disrupt that stasis can damage it. Didn’t you already know that?”
He shook his head again.
Laen suddenly had a moment of clarity. “Oh! I keep forgetting you’re a class two, and USP is class seven tech. I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to insult you-“
“It’s fine. And I appreciate that you don’t think of us as technologically inferior. Even though we are.”
“Please, don’t mention this to anyone. I’m embarrassed just telling you.”
“Laen, It’s fine. I wasn’t insulted. And I won’t tell anyone.”
The Dominion ambassador breathed easier. “Thanks. But seriously, don’t tell anyone about Static Positioning. I could get court martialed just for saying the name to a class two.”
The Human smiled. “I won’t. Humanity will learn it the hard way when we become class seven. But for now, you can’t continue traveling through space in a shuttle, even with indestructible armor.”
“What do you mean?”
“The Ultruin’s thought they could win against you because all you had was a single shuttle.”
“But there was a Dominion ship only ten minutes away, if I was actually in danger.”
“They knew you weren’t in danger. They wanted to intimidate you. If they were actually declaring war on the Dominion, they would have gone to one of the Dominion bases.”
“I suppose. What do you suggest?”
Bradley smiled wide. “The Human Confederacy would like to offer you a diplomatic warship.”
“A warship? What am I supposed to do with a warship? I don’t think even the Ultruin’s would hesitate to fight someone with one warship.”
“Ah, but it’s not just one warship. It’s one Confederate warship, crewed by humans. If the Ultruins or anyone else open fire on you, they are not only declaring war on the Dominion, who couldn’t care less, but on the Human Confederacy as well. And we do care.”
Laen nodded slowly. “And by riding in your fancy ship, I would also be officially endorsing you.”
The man cocked his head to one side and smiled at her.
She wasn’t sure what to say. Picking up her glass of cool-aid, she maintained eye contact and drank the contents while being intimidating as possible.
Sensing her trepidation, Bradley continued. “I’m sure a Dominion equipped shuttle has every luxury Humans can’t imagine, but it must be extremely cramped on board. You can just park your ship in the hangar and take a stroll down the corridors once in a while-“
Laen choked on the cool-aid and coughed all over the table, narrowly avoiding Bradley. She wiped the liquid running down her chin with her sleeve, abandoning her intimidating stance. “I’m sorry, did you say hangar?”
“Yes. The ship I have in mind has a small hangar that would be more than enough-“
“How big is the kitchen?”
“I don’t know, probably about the size of this room?” He gestured at the walls. They were about ten meters by twelve.
“Do they stock cool-aid?” She asked, while lifting the glass that contained what cool-aid she hadn’t spilled.
“They…certainly can.”
“And do they serve the food we just ate?” Bradley had treated himself to a pork roast, while Laen had consumed five consecutive grilled-cheese sandwiches.
“Not exactly, but we can customize the menu to your liking. All on the Human Confederacy’s bill, of course.”
“I’ll take it!”
Bradley took a deep breath. “I’m glad we could be of service.”
A day later, Laen was almost jumping up and down with excitement. She was trying not to actually jump, because if she had she would have knocked her head on the overhead. The Perseverance was a Human Confederacy heavy cruiser, which meant it was slower than a light cruiser and less armored then a dreadnought.
The passageways were just as cramped as one her shuttle, they just went in straight much lines longer. But there were more open areas, like the gym, hangar, and galley. The bridge was another area with a lot of open space, but that was just to fit more viewscreens and buttons and switches.
Her shuttle, which lacked a name, was parked quietly in one corner of the Perseverance’s hangar. The rest of her crew declined to step onto the “Human death trap” and preferred to stay in a ship that wouldn’t vent atmosphere if it hit a micrometeor going a mere quarter of the speed of light.
The kitchen had been her first stop. It was filled with appliances and machines with functions she couldn’t even guess at, but she made the head chef promise not to start the next meal until she was there to watch. Being able to eat food with texture while being in space would be the ultimate luxury.
Now, she was climbing through the many hatches to get to the bridge. Her first stop as commander of the vessel was the Dominion supply base, one of the two bases operated by the Dominion in this galaxy.
“Have we arrived, captain?”
Captain Williams turned to face her. “Aye, ma’am. We are within radio hailing distance.”
“Open a channel!”
She waited excitedly for something to happen. Nothing did.
“No response.”
“Why would they be ignoring me? Wait, did you say radio?”
“Yes ma’am, our sublight communication is radio based.”
“That’s why. The base doesn’t have radio equipment. Call my shuttle, please.”
The main screen changed to show her shuttle pilot reading something with his feet on the console, ignoring the red lights that appeared whenever his foot bumped something. Seeing her on his own screen, he jumped and straightened his posture, hiding his reading material under his seat. “Yes ma’am. How may I help?”
“Contact Commander Devrak, please, and route the call to the bridge of the Perseverance over the sublight comms.”
“Right away.”
A moment later, Commander Devrak appeared on the screen.
“Yes ambassador Lon, what can I do for you?”
“It’s Laen.”
“My apologies, Lon. Why are you interrupting my day?”
“Do you remember that piece-of-junk shuttle you gave me?”
“I was ordered give you the Mark 25 model. Otherwise all you would have gotten was an oxygen mask and a pair of plastic angel wings.” Commander Devrak apparently wanted nothing to do with this conversation.
“Haha, very funny. Well, I got a new ship! See it on your scanner?”
“Nope.”
“Of course you do. It’s the biggest thing around besides the station.”
Devrak squinted at something off screen. “Oh, there it is, I mistook it for a garbage scow at first. No, it is a garbage scow. Does it even have USP?”
Laen glanced around nervously. “Ah, no, these are class twos, Devrak. No USP for a while.”
“Well, have fun. Somewhere far away, preferably.”
“Wait wait wait. I haven’t even shown you the firepower I have.”
Devrak sighed. “Whoever decided to give you firepower is clearly the worst tactician ever. Fine. What do you want to do?”
“Just launch a training drone and watch!”
The commander leaned back in his chair and spoke to someone before turning back to the camera. “Your drone’s launching now.”
Laen turned to Captain Williams. “Do you have the drone in your sights?”
“Bogey detected on our starboard bow, twenty five degrees by ten. Mass: eighteen thousand kilograms. Distance: eleven thousand meters.”
Laen jumped up. “Main guns to starboard! Prepare a full broadside!” She didn’t know if that was proper military speak, but she had watched a dozen space pirate movies to prepare for this moment.
The captain nodded to his crew. “Fire on my mark. Three, two one.”
There was a loud reverberation throughout the ship as eighteen cannons fired simultaneously.
After a few seconds, the tactical officer spoke. “Target impacted.”
Commander Devrak, still on screen, looked bored. “Are you sure?” The drone doesn’t show any damage.”
The tactical officer continued. “Sixteen of eighteen shells hit the target.”
Devrak’s expression stayed the same. “The accelerometer doesn’t even show its course changed.”
The captain turned to Laen. “Normally, against a target of that size we would use missiles or flak guns. The main guns are accurate to a thousand kilometers if we’re firing on ships our size.”
“Thank you Captain. And you, Commander Devrak, for being a good host.”
“Unwillingly. Good travels, ambassador. I’d hate to hear something bad happened and I had to rescue you.” Devrak closed the connection.
Captain Williams ignored the commander. “Where to now, ma’am?”
She pointed her finger forward. “To the edge of the universe!”
Just then, her communicator buzzed. “Hello?”
“Ma’am, it’s Chef Ganovich. We’re ready to prepare the next meal, if you’d still like to watch!”
“Are we having cool-aid?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“With grilled cheese?”
“As you requested.”
“Don’t start without me!” Laen turned off the communicator and almost ran out of the bridge but turned back to Captain Williams. “Take us anywhere! I doubt Devrak wants to see us anymore!”
The captain sighed. “Plot a course for Earth.” Under his breath, he muttered “I hate grilled cheese.”
Chapter 3
In a darkened room deep within the Perseverance, four crewmen conversed secretly.
“She’s up to no good. We have to stop her.”
“And you’ve seen how she treats the crew. She would do the same in our place.”
There were muttered agreements as they plotted. Suddenly, the hatch slammed open and Captain Williams strode through, accompanied by Chef Ganovich.
“What’s going on here?” The captain said angrily. “Gentlemen, are you conspiring?” The crewmen shrunk back.
Williams raised his voice. “WITHOUT ME?”
No one made eye contact.
“I told you I would be five minutes late, and you’ve started without me! Were this on the record, you’d be reprimanded for failure to adhere to protocol!”
Crewman Banes stepped forward. “We’re terribly sorry, captain. I take responsibility. We were waiting like you asked, and I just mentioned how eating macaroni and cheese a fourth time this week upset my stomach, and that started the conversation.”
Williams nodded. “Apology accepted. Now, let’s get this started in an orderly fashion. I understand some of you have complaints about our guest. As your captain, I represent the crew to the higher ups, including Miss Laen. Crewman Banes, why don’t you start.”
“Thank you, captain. As I mentioned earlier, we’ve been having nothing but grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese, and nachos with cheese all week. I understand our mission is diplomatic in nature, but must we suffer just because she never saw cheese before?”
“That’s certainly a valid complaint, and one I share as well. Let’s hear Crewman Korenski.”
Korenski looked up with an evil grin. “She didn’t sign any agreement with us, but here we are ferrying her around the sector. She’s no good, I say. You saw what she did to the Ultruins, and that’s what she’ll do to us.”
The captain looked confused. “What, exactly, did she do to the Ultruins?”
“You saw, in the news, with the rest of us. The battle of…of…what was the battle called?”
Banes shrugged. “I don’t think they gave it a name. And it was in the middle of empty space, so there aren’t any planets to name it after.”
“There was that moon. The one she gave a piercing to.”
“Aye, though it wasn’t quite a moon. Moons orbit planets, and this object was sitting alone. It was more of a dwarf planet.”
“Don’t planets necessarily orbit stars?”
“Not necessarily. There are rogue planets between star systems.”
“Really? I didn’t know that.” Korenski shook the surprise off his face and returned to scowling. “What was this rogue planet’s name then? We can name the battle off of that.”
No one knew. Everyone took out their pocket computers and data pads to look it up.
One of the crewmen who hadn’t spoken yet found it first. “KX-9404-&kpX_\5.”
Korenski nodded slowly. “The battle of the rogue dwarf planet ‘kay ex dash nine four zero four dash ampersand, lowercase gee kay, uppercase ex, underscore backslash five’. It doesn’t really have a ring to it.”
Captain Williams checked the time. “Regardless, you were saying?”
“Right then. She dishonored the tenants of honorable warfare and humiliated everyone involved. The least she should have done is destroyed half their fleet in defense, and maybe painted some dents on her own hull to make it look like an actual battle. Instead the Ultruin commander surrendered without taking a single casualty!”
“And you’re upset…why?”
“It’s dishonorable. When I think about all those Ultruin sailors, returning to their homes unharmed when they should have been given honorable deaths, it makes me angry!”
Someone in the back spoke up. “Don’t blame the squids for having better looking wives than you!”
After a round of laughter, Banes joined in. “If you want an honorable death, Korenski, tell your wife what you tell us about her cooking!”
Williams spoke up. “Alright, that’s enough. Korenski, the Human Confederation is not allied or affiliated with the People’s Republic of Ultrua in any way, and we do not care whether they were humiliated or not. She conducted warfare in an honorable manner as far as we are concerned, and that’s as far as you need to be concerned.”
“Aye, captain.”
“Chef Ganovich, do you have anything to add?”
Ganovich cleared his throat. “As far as the food, Miss Laen appears to be a simple good hearted soul. All she cares about is watching all manner of meals involving cheese being made in ridiculous quantities. And maybe galactic domination. It’s hard to hear over the mixer. Regardless, she’s also a diplomat, and even if she demands the men stick to her meal choices, she will at least phrase it in a way that makes us feel better about it.”
“My thoughts exactly. Does anyone else have a specific complaint?”
Another crewman in the back spoke. “I’m responsible for cleaning her quarters. She leaves hairpins everywhere!”
“I’m pretty sure all women do that. Anyone else?”
The crewman wouldn’t be silenced. “And she has a dozen bottles of shampoo!”
Williams grimaced. “That’s even less of a complaint. Is there anyone else?”
No one spoke except the same crewman. “And you should see the shower drain!”
“I will speak with Miss Laen about the food. The other issues are not at all relevant.” Without waiting for a reply, the captain turned and walked out the hatch.
Williams met Laen in the executive conference room.
“Miss Laen, thank you for coming.”
The blue skinned ambassador was nervous. “Of course. What is this about?”
“I’m sorry for alarming you. It’s nothing serious. I just wanted to discuss something in private.”
Laen did not appear less nervous.
Williams continued. “We are happy to provide whatever food you enjoy, however, the men are used to a more…traditional diet in the service.”
“They don’t like cheese?”
“They do, just usually in much smaller quantities. And I don’t know about your species, but humans can get constipated from eating too much.”
Laen put a hand on her stomach. “Is that what that is? I’m sorry, I should have known you would object. Human space food is much more diverse than the Dominion’s. I was just so excited about being able to chew instead of just swallowing.”
“I understand. You can still order whatever you want, but would you mind if the crew returned to their scheduled menus?”
“Of course not. And there’s no need to treat me special. I’ll have what the crew is having.”
Williams smiled. “I think you’ll enjoy it. And I know there’s cheesecake for desert.”

2023.06.10 23:46 thekrautboy [GUIDE] Free Dynamic DNS + Nginx Proxy Manager + Lets Encrypt Wildcard Certs
Posted this in another sub and thought maybe its useful to someone here too. The Dynamic should have been in quotes.
What we will do: Get a free subdomain for your network and add simple records to it, add a record to your own local DNS, configure NPM (Nginx Proxy Manager) to get trusted valid SSL certificates for your subdomain, and importantly sub-subdomains, set NPM to proxy to a service like Portainer.
The end result will be that you can use https://portainer.example.dedyn.io in your home network, and you will have proper SSL working, and also no need to remember port numbers for each link anymore. The one part i will not cover here is installing NPM. It would be beyond this already looking huge post and it truely is not hard to do.
Look up guides/videos about "installing nginx proxy manager". There are thousands in whatever format and language your prefer. And do yourself a favor, if you are not already, use docker compose for it instead of docker run, it makes things much easier for you and any good tutorial will use this too. It really is not hard to do.
And if it is, then honestly, maybe you shouldnt be doing this at all, quite simple. Its okay to not be ready to do something. But fingers crossed,
you managed to just install NPM. Good.
You will also need some form of
simple local DNS. A lof people reading this might already be running something like
Pihole or
Adguard Home, thats perfect. If not, maybe your
routegateway has basic local DNS features and you can add a custom entry there. If you dont have any of that,
you can still continue but functionality will be limited, for now. Or if you are not in a rush with the SSL cert stuff here, you can take a break and first get Pihole for example going in your Docker setup, it doesnt need any SSL certs or things for itself.
get domain/subdomain
Get yourself a domain. Yes that is
required. But it
doesnt need to be a paid domain. And you dont have to run your services publicly over it later.
You can do that all local only. But for a trusted SSL cert you need a domain. And it can be a subdomain too. Just make sure the provider is compatible with
Lets Encrypt's DNS challenge and that they support wildcard subdomains. A lot of them dont. For simplicity i will stick to the excellent
deSEC here.
So get a
free subdomain from
https://www.desec.io and it will be like example.dedyn.io Important:
You dont need to make a new subdomain here for each of your services at home. You only create one "main" domain and later on we will locally add everything else. So dont make portainer.dedyn.io now, make something like myhomenetwork.dedyn.io and that will later become portainer.myhomenetwork.dedyn.io
Now you have a subdomain and deSEC is managing your DNS records for that domain. Perfect.
add records
In the deSEC interface, you add one A record that points to your home IP (
you dont need to open anything there, no ports, nothing, just add the record). This could even be a fake IP, but im fairly certain a valid A record needs to exist (
i might test and edit this later).
Then add a CNAME record that has just * as the
subname and has example.dedyn.io. as the
target hostname (note the
dot at the end here).
That is all for the records now.
get token
Now go to Token Management on their site, click the + to Generate a new token, enter a useful name for the token like "nginx proxy" and click
save to show the token. Now
copy that token value into a textfile somewhere, you will need it later and it will
not be shown again for security reasons. When you have done that, you are done with deSEC here.
make local DNS entry
Now as i mentioned earlier, maybe you already use a
local DNS like Pihole. Perfect! In your Pihole add a new "Local DNS entry" and use for portainer.example.dedyn.io in that format and now the important bit,
this entry should NOT point at your Portainer IP, but it
needs to point at the IP wherever your Nginx Proxy Manager is running. Maybe that is the same IP as Portainer, maybe not.
Just make sure its the one where NPM can be reached from your entire network. Save this and done. If youre using AdGuard or something else, the procedure is the same, just different menus and labels. I really cant provide info for every local DNS tool that exists.
Worst case, you
dont have anything for local DNS. Then on your workstation (probably the computer youre sitting at right now), the computer where you will later try to access Portainer (as the example)...
edit your local hosts file. Sounds scary, it isnt. If you are using a typical Linux, sudo nano /etc/hosts will do it.
Add a new line in the format you can already see there, like 192.168.120.17 portainer.example.dedyn.io Replace the IP with the IP where your Nginx Proxy Manager is running on, NOT where Portainer might be running. Save the file and exit (with nano, press CTRL+X). Now you have a fake local DNS entry for portainer.example.dedyn.io but it
only works on this one computer, not for your entire network like a phone etc. That is why a
real local DNS is later required to make this all work perfectly. But for now you can continue like this. If you later do setup a local DNS, you can come back and remove this line from your hosts file.
Try ping portainer.example.dedyn.io and you should see it resolving to and probably replying from the IP of NPM. Good.
nginx proxy manager
So you have watched and followed a guide to simply install NPM (Nginx Proxy Manager) on your system, for simplicity that can be the same system where all your services are running in Docker for example but it doesnt need to be.
This computer does not need to have any ports forwarded or open or anything to the public internet. NPM should be running on ports 80 and 443, but that means only those ports on that machine, not forwarding these ports to the internet. And you need access to NPM's webinterface which is at port 81 by default. So if youre using docker-compose for this, you must have mapped 80:80 and 443:443 and the 81 can be mapped to whatever you want.
So enter NPM's webinterface, go to
SSL certificates and select
Add new, Lets Encrypt.
Now into the domains field you enter this: Type example.dedyn.io then click on add. Now still in the domains field, type *.example.dedyn.io and at the end, click add again. Now you should have two seperate entries there for two "domains".
Lower in that menu, enable Use a DNS Challenge and in the Provider list select deSEC.
In the field 'Credentials File Contentyou **ONLY replace the placeholder**YOUR_DESEC_API_TOKEN` with the token you have saved earlier from the deSEC web interface. So the field must then look like this:
dns_desec_token = edWQ1LXhjBG8wdYj4Ws5HFmE4mjs dns_desec_endpoint = https://desec.io/api/v1/
Then Agree to the terms and save this. You can
wait a minute or two and then the entry in the list should have a green symbol and it will say a date when the cert will expire (90 days from now). Thats it, that is all done with your "fake" domain and your valid SSL certificate. Perfect!
add a proxy host
Now go to the Hosts/Proxy Hosts menu and click Add Proxy Host.
As domain you enter portainer.example.dedyn.io Yes thats correct, you just add the name of your service at the front, as another subdomain to the one you actually own. Thats what the * does as a wildcard when we added the DNS records and when we setup the SSL certificate.
Now as scheme its important to know that this
DOES NOT refer to how you want to access Portainer. It refers to what Portainer as the target is currently offering. With a standard Portainer (or most other services like this) it will be plain HTTP. So leave this option at that.
The field Forward Hostname/IP that is where nginx should redirect to, the target. So that must be the IP of your Portainer in this example. Enter that. And into the Forward Port field you enter the port where you typically reach Portainer at.
Leave everything else at default for now. The additional options are sometimes required for some services, but you can always come back later to toggle them on/off and test more.
In the tab for SSL select the entry we have created earlier for your example.dedyn.io *.example.dedyn.io. Again, for now leave everything else at default. Click save.
Your proxy host will now be shown in the list of hosts. Give it a few seconds, then try to access https://portainer.example.dedyn.io
What is happening then is this:
- Your local DNS will resolve this domain to the IP for your NPM
- Because you used https to access it and you didnt add any custom port, your browser tries the default port 443 on that IP
- NPM sits on that IP and this port, and responds
- NPM recognizes that you are not trying to reach itself, but that you used portainer.example.dedyn.io
- NPM redirects you to the proxy host you have set up earlier, meaning the Forward Hostname/IP and Port and thats where Portainer actually is.
- You should now have the Portainer interface loading and your browser should show a happy symbol or whatever for a valid trusted SSL certificate, click on it and check the details, it will say something about Lets Encrypt.
Done. NPM will also pay attention to when the SSL cert will expire, and automatically renew it for you, you dont have to do anything manually there. You also dont have to touch the public DNS records at deSEC anymore.
From now on, for a new local service that you want to use, all you need to do is: Add a local DNS entry for it in the form of service.example.dedyn.io and point it to your NPM IP. Then inside NPM, you add a new proxy host, and add the IP of the service as the Forward IP and select the existing SSL cert. Thats it. Nothing more.

2023.06.10 20:11 The_Real_Katakuri [Chatper 1086] Rested Review: Looking back
Ch. 1086 p1_2 The chapter starts with this color spread. Very colorful, very very clean. It's very readable. Every element, including water on the characters is easily understandable, the ground is beautiful and the puddles are even more beautiful. That's the good part.
I have three problems with the cover, though:
- Mugiwara pirates again and again and again. We've had some similar color spreads in the past and it gets to a point where they feel repeated, even if they aren't. I'm convinced most readers would prefer more different characters making it to the color covers.
- Franky's hairstyle. Because Franky wasn't horrible enough in last chapter's cover, Oda needed to find a new and even more silly hairstyle for Franky. I wonder if he's ever going to swallow his pride and go back to draw Franky either with his original hairstyle or the shaved style with which he came back after the time skip. Every single other hairstyle has been ridiculous and has only served to ridicule Franky.
- The perspective is completely messed up. The flowers in the top right part of the cover show peprfectly where the vanishing point is (in the middle of the image very close to the top). The vanishing point is the point where the camera is "looking" to, even if Oda likes to put it outside the image sometimes for artistic reasons. The thing is, every character on the ground (not Luffy), and most notably Nami, is drawn with very short legs as though Oda was trying to do a very high angle shot. And that doesn't make any sense accounting for the perspective of the background, but also because he's really only shortened their legs and not the rest of their body and it's very very weird. Look at Nami's legs and the umbrella. The umbrella isn't distorted but the legs are. That defeats the purpose of distorting the legs and it simply feels like she's a dwarf now.
In any case, the work on the reflections of every character in the puddles are awesome.
Ch. 1086 p3 Last chapter ended with Wapol escaping from Pangaea castle with Vivi (and Kinderella?), and this one begins and they have already successfully left Mariejoise. Igaram, Pell and Chaka are searching for king Cobra and Vivi.
It isn't clear at all when is this happening:
- The same day as last chapter but later? Probably too soon since last chapter meetings were still held.
- Next day? Or the following?
- Many days since last chapter? Very unlikely that those three are still wandering at Mariejoise completely clueless. But later events will suggest this to be the case.
I find it very strange, regardless of time, that Igaram, Pell & Chaka haven't been dealt with by the nobles. It's not like they're hiding precisely. The way I see it, there are only 2 ways to proceed with them:
- Tell them "the king is here, please come" and kill them.
- Tell them about Cobra's death and frame Sabo as soon as possible in ortder to avoid suspicion.
If they aren't killed, and the nobles are not answering to their questions about the king either, anyone would connect the dots and imagine Cobra was murdered by the nobles.
Also, it's good that Igaram cares for Vivi, but what about caring a chapter or two earlier? What was more important for Igaram than protecting Vivi? What was he actually doing??
In fact, why was Vivi waiting for a Gondola to leave the Red Line when his father was just getting to a meeting with the Gorōsei??
Ch. 1086 p4 Wapol and Vivi are hiding in the Aegis' kingdom ship and arrange a way to go with Morgans. Good. That takes partial care of explaining how they ended up with Morgans. But the real question is how did left the Red Line? Did really no one go looking for them? It's ridiculous.
First the Revolutionaries show how anyone can infiltrate at Mariejoise and now multiple people show how anyone can escape as well. The humiliation is scandalous.
Wapol doesn't want to tell Vivi about Imu or his dead father because he's sure CP0 are trying to kill him. That doesn't make sense. If you're sure they're going to kill you you don't act in your future assassin's favor. If anything, trying to get as much attention as possible from the world is the way to go. It might fail, but there's a chance the attention could make Imu want to discredit Wapol rather than kill him and fuel the conspiracy theorists.
Ch. 1086 p5 With the recent announcement about Oda having eye surgery and him saying he couldn't see properly, it would be reasonable to consider how that could have affected his ability to draw.
Let me tell you the truth about two things:
- People with astigmatism don't become functionally blind until they have surgery correct their vision. They wear glasses and that's the end of it. Surgery will make Oda not need glasses, but that's all. The astigmatism wasn't preventing him from drawing at all.
- Look at the cover again. Oda can draw really well when he wants. Look now at this page. It's difficult to know whether it's king Stelly in the first panel or not because he's as much of a scribble as Sabo's picture, that might be a legit scribble.
Spandam, Gismonda ans some other agents are lookinig for Vivi and Sabo, but not the former CP9 members, who had Vivi in their custody and lost her. Also, where's Rob Lucci and what's he doing? Is he completely ignoring his duty as well?
Ch. 956 p9 So... Stelly was staring so hard at Vivi's poster that he didn't see Sabo's poster and couldn't listen to anything regarding the terrorist attack lead by his brother despite the whole Mariejoise was being searched for him. Interesting.
Ch. 1086 p6 The gorōsei pick up the ringing den den mushi. This is the only relevant thing happening in this whole page.
The narrator puts emphasis on Cobra's death and Vivi's disappearance but not on the clash between the Revolutionaries and the admirals. Why is that? It's to bolster the retcon'd timeline.
Ch. 925 p9 & 10_11 Remember that back in chapter 925, the highlight about the Reverie was the clash between the Revolutionary Army and the admirals. And it was said to happen during the 4th day of the Reverie. However, in this and the immediately previous chapters, events are happening during the 7th day (the last).
Another detail is that then the silhouettes indicated that the news included Sabo fighting the admirals, but during this recent flashback, Sabo didn't even met them.
Ch.. 956 p4 Then, in ch. 956 Garp explains that the incident with Cobra happens after the Reverie ended. That clearly separates the operation of the Revolutionary army (4th day) and Cobra's death (+7th day).
At the same time, Garp says that happened after they left, and that it was reported to him even later. And asks Neptune and his family not to fear humans because of it.
This and Shirahoshi's reaction make sense only if they had no better reasons to fear humans, like Shirahoshi being assaulted a second time by Charloss, and if Shirahoshi bid farewell to Vivi while everything was fine and now she's surprised to hear that.
But that's not what the recent flashback tells us.
Ch. 1086 p7 Contrary to last page, this one has mane things to consider.
Imu wants to "test" the "Mother Flame", a Vegapunk's invention, and the Saturn says they haven't had the chance to try it yet. Another gorōsei suggests a forest for the test but Imu wants "Lulucia" kingdom. The gorōsei show concern for the choice but at no point they question it.
We will see in the next page that they're talking about the weapon that destroyed Lulucia kingdom. And the first thing that calls for my attention is that the gorōsei look like complete amateurs here.
They've had a mass destruction weapon for "some" time, but haven't tested it yet. Can you imagine how many things could go wrong when trying new technology for the very first time? But don't be fooled, Imu doesn't want to "test" it. She wants to use it.
The gorōsei have been waiting with such a weapon in their power without testing it because...?? It's obvious that there must be a lot of places in the world were Imu, the gorōsei and the World Government in general should be perfectly fine with testing the Mother Flame, from certain uninhabited areas of the Red Line, to unaffiliated countries and from the top of my head, if anything else, Punk Hazard comes to mind. A government island they think is closed off because Akainu and Aokiji made it useless. It's the perfect place to test these kind of things. But they think they've had "no chance to try it yet". Sure.
In an attempt to defend Vegapunk from the undeniable increasing evidence of his evilness, I read some say the weapon is not "he Mother Flame" but "Uranus" and that the Mother Flame is only a power source.
That makes even less sense. First, because Imu clearly instructs to use the Mother Flame and not Uranus. And second because there's no way they can actually think they haven't had the chance to try a power source
Ch. 1086 p8_9 Imu answers about the reason to choose Lulucia and the five gorōsei are formally introduced. And three things stand out to me:
- They're named after planets of the solar system (other than the ones already used lol) and at the same time, they're not. There's Saturn and Mars, but there's also Ju Peter and V. Nasjūrō, who read like Jupiter and Venus + japanese traditional name ending. And lastly there's Valcury, who by elimination and obvious similarity should reference Mercury, but this one is clearly different. And I wonder if this is Oda wanting to name the gorōsei after planets and at the same time being obsessed with being unpredictable.
- With this names two middle names are introduced: "Ju" and "V.". So far, only "D." has been a thing. It was odd enough if you think about it, but the fact that now two more exist and that they do so in order to not write the name exactly like the planet feels quite odd to me as well.
- What is this "warrior god" thing? What does that even mean for them? I mean, I understand what "warrior god" means, but what's an "agriculture warrior god" or a "finance warrior god"??
Has Jupiter ever waged war in the name of agriculture or something like that? I get it, it's something meant to assign specific roles to each of them despite they have acted like a council for 1086 chapters, but wouldn't it make more sense to be "finance god" and "justice god" instead without the "warrior" part?
Also, do they really have any authority over their "department"? Last page showed they are nothing but the butlers of Imu. It's difficult to imagine they have agency.
To me, this looks like the upteenth attempt at hyping us for nothing. First, people living in Mariejoise were titled "World Nobles". Then they were rebranded as "Celestial Dragons". And recently they've been rebranded again as "Gods". And for no reason and without explanation. Just the narrator coming up with new ways to extol them. But at the end of the day, words are just that and so far, even the gorōsei have only prooved (this chapter too) to be very incompetent.
Now that I think about it...
- Is V. Nasjūrō going to have problems because some countries are increasingly refusing to pay tribute? He's in charge of finances, right?
- Is Ju Peter going to be held responsible for the lack of food they're currently facing?
- Shouldn't Valcury have been the one to... Oh wait, we haven't gotten to that part, yet.
Imu says Lulucia has been chosen for proximity alone. So, officially, both the fact that Sabo had gone there and that the country had rebelled aren't the reason. I wonder whether Imu's answer is just a way of saying the gorōsei to not even ask for explanations and just obey or actually a whimsical and very plot convenient occurrence.
The gorōsei note the convenience of being able to use the Mother Flame "freely" and I'm sure they're not talking about authorization, because Imu rules the world, but about the cost. Certainly the Mother Flame must consume a lot of energy. If only they had some scientist trying to develop a troll-science self´-sustaining power source, right?
Well, they got one but they're very heeadstrong in killing him, for some reason.
Ch. 1086 p10 We get to see the seraphim we hadn't yet seen. I don't think there's anything relevant in this page, but I've read some people arguing S-Croc could be a girl, you know, the old theory about Crocodile being originally a woman since Ivankov said he made Croc a huge favor, even though it could actually be anything else.
Personally I don't think S-Croc has particularly female traits in this image, but it's true that he has the same starry eyes as S-Snake, while S-Shark and S-Hawk do not (the others haven't shown their eyes). But if I had to guess, I'd put my money in Oda has decided to always have at least one gender-ambiguous character to troll the readers with left and right.
Ch. 1086 p11 Sabo telling more of what we already knew and saw.
Ch. 1086 p12 And this page is again, dedicated to justify the retcon'd timeline as though it was not.
Back in chapter 1060 (that's the beginning of this very arc, do you still remember what this is arc was about?), Sabo was at Lulucia when the annihilation happened.
Ch. 1060 p13, 14_15 & 16 We saw him as we were only seeing Lulucia and its citizens being shot by the Mother Flame and also the call ending abruptly immediately after the shot.
Now, Sabo says he was near, but not exactly there. And tries to explain the ending call saying it was an indirect call that was "rerouted" through another den den mushi on Lulucia.
First I wonder how do you do that from a ship? It's true that the specifics about how den den mushi are operated have never been told, but regardless, if this "rerouting" were a thing, surely it would have come in handy to many characters through the story before.
Also, since when can Marines (or any third party) locate den den mushi? They have been able to intercept communications and listen to them, but not guess where was any of the snails making the call. And even if they could, given he himself says it was not an encrypted den den mushi, hence being vulnerable to interception, why wouldn't they locate the original signal from Sabo just like the one at Lulucia?
Ch. 1086 p13 I don't remember Lulucia's name being romanized before, but it can be read in the ship's sail. It's written with a C (until another assistant thinks otherwise at least).
Sabo rules out living thing and natural disaster as the cause for Lulucia's annihilation and Ivankov pretty much implies Imu is someone from the void century who has lived this long because she's immortal thanks to the Ope Ope no mi.
Regarding Sabo's claim, I think we've seen all sorts of surreal things in One Piece to agree his assumption is very bold. A shadow in the sky is no indicator of no living thing or natural disaster. In fact we've seen shadows in the sky caused no more and no less by living beings and natural phenomena.
Ch. 299 p12_13 On his part, Ivankov's assumption is also quite bold. Does a name really reference one single instance of a living being? There can only have ever been one Imu? What about one Oars?
There's also plenty of people known for their outstanding longevity like Kureha. (Interesting that this made me think of her...)
It's true that Ivankov accounts for the name being not truly a reason next page, but the fact that he implies it with this force under an argument he knows is very weak... This is just Oda telling us "this is this way because a character is saying it" or trolling us for fun.
Ch. 1086 p14 Also, as I said last chapter, anyone can know of Imu and it was completely unreasonable of Imu not to tell Cobra about her, considering they were going to kill him no matter what and she said she was going to address his questions.
Could anyone else than Imu from 800 years ago be the one commanding the gorōsei? Why not? What kind of reasoning is that?
Next Ivankov makes his best guess of the day and claims Vegapunk must have created the Mother Flame (confirmed some pages ago by Imu). And it's now of all assumptions that Dragon intervenes to stop jumping to conclusions. Really??
"Vegapunk would never intentionally design a dedicated killing machine". What kind of joke is this?
- Kuma
- Mass-produced Pacifista model 1
- Mass-produced Pacifista model 2
- Mass-produced Pacifista model 3
- Seraphim
And after this and out of absolutely nowhere, they speak of ancient weapons. This page and the previous one is some of the most forced text I've seen in One Piece.
Ch. 1086 p15 For the final page of the chapter (yes, 15 pages only again, 2 of them cover), a new character makes his debut by sentencing to death Saint Donquixote Mjosgard.
He's named Saint Figarland Garling and is said to have been king of God Valley. Unlike everyone else, apparently, I'm not going to theorize about his relationship with Shanks, I want to talk to you about two other characters.
First, Dr. Kureha.
Ch. 154 p8 She looks just like she was Garling's twin sister. It's interesting, because a couple of pages back the matter of longevity was brought up and now we see a world noble said to have been king of a land outside Mariejoise and outside the Red Line. As we've been told in a number of occasions (last one being last chapter), only the Nefertari family were founders of the World Government who stayed at their homeland. This means if Garling was actually king of God Valley and not just a descendant of the last king, he's from the void century. Not as an hypothesis like with Imu, but confirmed. Thus, the simmilarities with Dr. Kureha aren't just physical. Both have incredible longevity and I think it was worth noting.
Last, I want to talk about Garling's predecessor: Crescent moon Gally.
https://preview.redd.it/pst3taqyc85b1.png?width=548&format=png&auto=webp&s=cd252883d36d4c0c3ae546f045bb46fead21c52e He's the villain in the first version of the Romance Dawn oneshot that would later become One Piece. As you can see, The crescent moon motive in the hair is there just like with Garling (and the nose too). If you take the crescent moon out of the hat and apply it to the hair together with the beard, and change the mustache stretching to the sides for more hair to make it more exaggerated, you get Garling. Even the pose and facial expression is pretty much the one in this image.
Also, in his original name written in japanese, there's no indication of whether his name is "GaRling" or just "Galling".
And that would be... Oh! I almost forgot! Yeah... given Garling sentenced Mjosgard, where does this leave Saint Topman Valcury? Wasn't he the "Justice warrior god"? Why isn't he the one handing out justice? What other affairs regarding justice does he manage if not judging disputes among celestial dragons?
