I’ve debated telling this tale for a good few months now, but after telling a good few friends and family about it I figured I’d gauge the reaction with a group of fellow front desk hosts.
So a good few months ago now I was nearing the end of the PM shift, around 10:30 PM when a rather stout bald fellow strolled in with what I assumed was his wife and another man (later revealed to be a lackey) and marched right up to the desk. I do the usual song and dance of “hey welcome back! What can we do for you?” To which he proceeds to fill the air with his scent of self-importance and states his name and room number (seemingly miffed that I didn’t immediately recognized him). Upon looking into his reservation he proceeded to continue in our dialogue about how the night prior he and his wife had been plagued with the smell of illicit substances and the sounds of illicit media in the room right next door to his. I naturally give the hospitality response of “I apologize for that sir is there anything we can do for you?” Which was my first mistake as I’d clearly done exactly what he wanted as he proceeded to tell me I was going to comp his room Night, no beating around the bush at all, just point blank told me I was going to. Now I’ve been “empowered” to make decisions such as these as I see fit and in order to save me any further headache with these goobers I just went ahead and conceded that we’d comp the room night for him. Should be over then right? He’s got what he wanted, but for some godforsaken reason, Mr. Z as we’ll call him decided to push a little further as a spoken agreement just wasn’t enough I suppose and proceeded to tell me “if that room Night isn’t comped, I have a very large social media following and it just wouldn’t be good for you or this hotel if that were to get out”. Naturally I recoiled internally as I’d never been threatened at the desk before, luckily I didn’t miss a beat and met his animosity with my usual laid back and semi-professional? Behavior, the next couple bits of the conversation were ultimately fruitless and consisted of me trying to remain composed despite being subtly threatened with blackmail, him shaking my hand and walking to his room with his wife and lackey.
Now I of course being the nosy individual I am, immediately looked him up through a quick google search and found he’s the founder of a massive mega church up in Colorado, and just used his religious influence to bully a random front desk worker into getting his room comped. A truly wonderful evening at the desk
Oh and a few minutes later his lackey came down from the room to tell me (with his hand touching the desk) “thank you so much for taking care of that”

Throwaway for obvious reasons. (M18) Before you think anything, I should maybe add a bit of backstory. From a young age, starting maybe around 1st or 2nd grade, I was bullied a lot. A good amount of the bullying was because of my weight, as I've been a pretty big guy for years. So, as a result, I struggled with my self-esteem. A lot. I moved from my hometown about 6 years ago, possibly offering a new fresh start. Maybe people wouldn't bully me as much, you know. That's not the reason why my family and I moved, but it gave me a slight spark of hope. That was a bit short-lived. I didn't fit in at my new school, at all. I honestly have never really fit in anywhere. Which didn't make sense to me ever because I've been told all my life that I had a great personality, and this and that and yaddyaddyadda. I never believed it for a second because of that low self-esteem. Settling into our move was very difficult as well which certainly did not help. At some point, I kind of was struggling with suicidal ideation but I never said anything. Until one day. I don't remember the exact context because it never became relevant, but I think I got grounded for arguing with one of my siblings, and so that set me off. I wanted to kill myself. I have no idea why, but I told my parents at the dinner table. Which led to a series of events ultimately ending up with my dad being arrested, DCS (Department of Children's Services) ended up getting involved, I got checked for a broken skull (had a hand-shaped bruise on my head going into the next school day), and a bunch more stuff I never should have had to deal with. I'll spare you the rest of the details and leave you to fill in the blanks. From that point on, I would have episode after episode, getting worse and worse every time, regarding my mental state. Maybe every 3 to 6 weeks I would have one. After that first episode, I was in therapy more or less prescribed by my state. Let me tell you, if you're ever in a situation where you have state provided therapy, I feel sorry for you. It absolutely sucks. Big time. They basically ended up telling me that I had problems, not regarding depression, but that I was a judgmental, selfish, egotistical teen. Which, I know myself pretty well, and I'm none of those things. So, that didn't help me very much. Soon after, given me running away from home and all these other events, I eventually ended up in a mental hospital. That may have been one of the worst experiences of my life. I had already gone through some Biblical counseling through my church and other agencies, but none of that helped. The mental hospital certainly did not help either. Those things are more or less only there for the purpose of keeping you safe while they figure out how much and how many of each medication to put you on. They used group punishment to keep us quiet, the food was horrible, I couldn't sleep, I broke the shower and had no way to fix it, it just. SUCKED. I mean, obviously it's not meant to be a five-star hotel. But surely you're not supposed to leave there feeling more suicidal than you were coming in, right? Well, that's what happened. Fast forward to today. Since then, I haven't had any major episodes or anything. I almost had one when I nearly cost my entire education career for the sake of nicotine and weed. Thankfully the principal had pity on me and worked out a solution other than expelling me. I am forever grateful. But, that doesn't mean anything has changed. I knew that if I tried to kill myself, or do something, I'm not a very secretive person. I'm very bad at keeping stuff in. So, I just repressed my emotions the best I could. I had a new Christian counselor whom I was honest with but never really connected with much. Now, I just don't understand why nothing makes me feel any better. I don't enjoy anything I do but for like ten seconds while I'm doing it. And then that feeling is gone. Zapped out of my existence. I also have no motivation to do anything anymore, my sleep schedule is messed up, I constantly berate myself (not as much as I used to but it's still a common issue), and all this stress from school, work (until I got fired, twice, for stupid reasons I'll save for another day), and other places just won't go away. I've tried everything to make myself feel validated to where I don't want to kill myself: drugs, therapy, counseling, friends, video games, music, etc. None of it does anything for me, especially anymore. I have to keep acting happy because I don't want my parents to be suspicious of me. We usually have good communication but they're not much of a help when it comes to understanding me anymore. So, my question is this. If nothing is helping me, and I've tried what seems to be everything, why should I go on? What hope is there for me? Obviously if I'm asking these questions, I'll still be alive to read them. So, take this as you will. At this point it just seems that there's nothing that will help. Hi guys - I am moving from Los Angeles to Chicago on April 14. I’m driving with a friend so we’ll be taking turns. My two options are through Utah and Colorado, or south through Rte 66. This is gonna be a heavy driving trip without much stops. Aiming for 2 nights of actual sleep. We have been planning on going through Colorado but a bit worried about potential snowstorms and effect on traffic or visibility. We do have a 4wd truck with AT tires so not too concerned about the vehicle handling it. Forecast shows some snow up to Thursday night, and there is currently a heavy storm going on. But sunny and dry the rest of the weekend.

Two questions:
- Should we risk the mountain drive for the sweet views, or go Rte 66? Neither of us care about Rt 66 since we will be driving straight through it. I have been to parts of it already while I have never been in Colorado. The Colorado route is supposedly 2 hours faster too according to Google, but the south route seems like the safer and more predictable option.
- I’ve never taken a road trip of this length. Do you guys recommend pre-booking hotels, or booking hotels on the way as needed?

My friends WiFi that I have used hundreds of times has decided not to let me use it anymore on my iPhone, iPad and Lenovo laptop. It connects on every other device (tv, desktop, etc). Whenever I try to log in it says “Unable to join the network” or “This network is operating on WiFi channels in use by several other nearby networks. Restarting your wireless router may allow it to automatically choose the best channel to use, and may resolve this problem.” I have done everything I can think of as a non-techy person; resetting network settings, unplugging modem, etc.
My other problem is I can’t use my Xfinity hotspot because the login pop up will not show up. I have no WiFi to use for the next 5 days that I’m pet sitting. If anyone has any ideas or could help that would be great 🙏

2023.03.31 07:06 JDDW Los Angeles, CA - Landlord gave a 60 day notice to move out for violation of pet policy (rescued cat from shelter). Is there any way I can avoid being evicted by either renters protection laws or having the cats moved to a friends house?
I have been living in this same house since around 2017. I adopted a cat from the shelter a few months ago and the landlord found out about it. I have been planning on moving anyways in the near future but am having trouble finding a new place. I received a 60 day notice on my door today with the reason being "violation of pet policy". I heard somewhere that there are laws protecting renters against being evicted if the animal is a rescue from a shelter but am not sure if this is true or not. I also read something about landlords needing to provide some sort of relocation assistance for tenants they are removing from their property but don't know if that applies to this situation. If I get kicked out ill be in major trouble since I stopped working to study software engineering and am having a hard time landing my first job, so being evicted would make it impossible to find a new place since im currently unemployed and don't meet income requirements to find a new place. Is there anything I can do to avoid being evicted? I would love to keep the cat and would be extremely sad to have to get rid of it but at the same time don't want to go homeless because of my cat. If all else fails would simply getting rid of the cat protect me from being evicted? I don't know if I need to go to court or what to do please help me and let me know what my options are! Also - I never admitted to actually having a pet cat, It started with me telling them i was temporarily watching it for a family member so I don't know if the landlord is required to provide proof that I even have a pet.... How does this work and what can I do!? Help me and I thank you in advance for any information on how to fix this.

I’m not sure what I’m looking for here, just some input I guess.
5 years ago, 2 weeks after returning home from a trip to Oregon where we were scouting out areas around Eugene to move to, I woke up and my wife was nowhere to be found. I thought that maybe she had went shopping with friends. A couple hours later the doorbell rang and there were two cops on my doorstep. My wife had been found in a hotel room surrounded by vodka bottles (she was a recovering alcoholic), fentanyl packages and oxycodone prescription bottles (I’m a chronic pain sufferer). There was no note, no warning signs, no indication… nothing.
I leave the house every 2 weeks to pick up groceries, my pain dr once a month and my endocrinologist every 3 months. Other than that I don’t really get out. I’ve seen my stepdaughters 4 times since the funeral. TBH, I haven’t showered in 5 years, I’m either sleeping or sitting in front of the tv. I do have a German Shepherd puppy for company but she doesn’t like to talk a whole lot.
I know deep down that I should probably be in therapy but at this point leaving the house seems like too much of a bother. I’m 53 years old, been disabled since 2007 and don’t really see the point.

What I’m concerned about, (and partly why we’ve been together so long despite our issues), is that we still have this level of closeness that may be hard to shake. We have so many like interests, inside jokes, we love to cuddle, not to mention two kitties we’ve had our whole relationship. But our issues, and sex life in particular, have reached painful levels. We’ve nearly broken up several times within the last year (I won’t go into details here, mostly just my questions below).
How difficult is it to leave someone you still feel pretty close to? Was it painful or scary to even bring up the topic of separating? Were you able to stay friends? Can you stay friends and not be tempted to try and get back with them? On top of that, how to handle the heartbreak of leaving someone you’re so close to but knowing it’s for the best?

He would send me pictures of them too saying he was going to pet me when he saw me (this made me extremely uncomfortable).This wasn’t really a one time deal either. He wears them pretty much every day now. Not only that but we wears ear and occasionally a tail to school as well.
Fortunately, he’s only a freshman so I don’t see him or pass by him on a normal days schedule. But literally every time I’m in the same room as him he follows me around and waits for me to turn around so he can hit me with his fursuit paws. I myself find this really uncomfortable, especially since I still don’t really know this person that well. But he does it not matter what. Like yesterday I was hanging out with some friends (we just finished our ACT’s and were eating lunch) and he walked over and just stood behind me and told me to turn around. I knew what was coming so I denied but he kept following me. Both me and my other friends found this really uncomfortable and he wouldn’t leave us alone.
I have a few furry friends but he is nothing like them. He makes me really uncomfortable and I want to get away from him but I don’t want to make him suicidal. Any suggestions on how I can get out of this?

So for a little background I’m obsessed with Pokémon. A freshman who is a furry noticed this and wanted to start hanging out. I have a few furry friends so I figured sure whatever. Oh boy was that a mistake. and now won’t leave me alone. I know I sound like a jerk for saying this but I really hate being around him.

Two weeks later, we still love the house and are happy to be homeowners. It has everything we need and we are happy. The cosmetic issues are annoying and we will taking advantage of our warranty as much as possible over the next year. We will have two months of rent overlap. We did not expect to find a home this quickly but in the end, we are okay with it and have funds to cover it. We consider it an additional closing cost.

I wanted to thank this sub very much for the help! I have learned so much in the past few months I've been active on here. The wife and I closed on our first home about two weeks ago. Here are the details of our journey:
- For the past two-ish years, we have been casually browsing Zillow and checking out different areas. However, we felt priced out of the market and barely had any savings left after moving across the country. My wife is in school full-time currently, so we are a single-income household at the moment. No kids but two pets we spoil. I make about $77k/yr base but with overtime, I made close to $100k last year. 780 credit score. $27K in student loans currently in covid forbearance. No other debt. We are in Central Texas.
- Early January 2023 - we decided to get serious about home buying and see if it was actually a possibility. Our lease is up at the end of May and we figured 5 months would be a decent time to start looking. We found a realtor through a referral from a friend/coworker. I crunched numbers and began researching different mortgage options, including downpayment assistance programs. We ultimately decided against them because the interest rates they were charging in exchange for the DPA were way too high in our opinion (like 7%+). We had approximately $32K of our own money saved up plus an $8k gift from a family member.
- Mid-January 2023 - Got pre-approved from a lender up to $325K at 6.5%. However, we wanted to set a max budget of $250K at 6.5%. Our criteria was a 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 garage SFH. The only homes available in our price range were new constructions in a small up-and-coming rural town. We were okay with this. Our realtor found a move-in ready new construction that met all of our criteria and we loved it. It is a single-story 1515 sqft 3 bed + 1 study room, 2 bath, 2 car garage with a fenced yard and all new appliances. It's only on 0.10 acres but we were okay with that for our first home. We toured a few more move-in-ready new constructions but we were not impressed by any of the others we saw. Our realtor, my wife, and I sat down with the sales agent from the builder. The house we liked was the last one available by this builder in the neighborhood and they said they were trying to move it so they can begin building in other neighborhoods. The home was originally listed for $380K back in May of 2022 but the price had dropped all the way to $277K by the time we were looking at it. The sales agent offered to drop the price to $265K plus 3% seller credits and a 4.25% interest rate (4.57% APR) if we used the builder's lender. We accepted this offer and signed a purchase agreement. We paid $5K in earnest money.
- The following week, we applied with the builder's lender and locked in the 4.25% interest rate. It was going to cost 3.375 points. However, most of that was covered with the 3% seller credits. We decided to go forward with this since it provided the most affordable monthly payment for us. The par rate was 6.125%, so doing the math, the breakeven point is only 22 months. We put 5% down on a 30-year fixed conventional loan.
- February 1st - Conditional approval received from the lender. House appraised at $293K ($28K above the sale price). Scheduled to close February 27th.
- February 4th - We got an inspection done on the house. We used our realtor's recommended inspector. I know this sub recommends against that but I did research on him before booking him and he had excellent reviews. A friend of mine also has used him in the past and had good things to say. I also trusted my realtor as they were mutual friends with several of my coworkers, were highly recommended, and I figured if they want to keep getting referrals, it would be in their best interest not to screw over their clients. Anyways, we decided to pay for a sewer line scope and this saved our butts! We found a hole in the sewer line and a belly under the house. Most other issues were found to be minor. The builder agreed to repair the sewer line.
- February 6th - Blue tape walkthrough. Please take this day seriously. While we had our realtor with us, I also wish I would have brought someone more skeptical as my wife and I were looking at the house with rose-colored glasses. While we pointed out obvious cosmetic things, we didn't notice many other imperfections we are now finding after living in the house for 2+ weeks. Like a complete lack of 90-degree angles in the house and shitty paint jobs. It's hard to unsee them now. However, it doesn't affect the functionality of the house. We are still happy to be homeowners.
- Mid-February - Ran into an issue in underwriting. I work 24 hours on, and 48 hours off, which is an average of 56 hours per week and I am not FLSA-exempt. Therefore, the first 40 hours of my income are paid at straight time, and the hours after that are paid at my OT rate. This is built into my schedule and not elective. Anyways, the underwriters only wanted to count 40 hours of my pay and not the additional overtime that is built into my schedule. I had to send in multiple pay stubs, W2s, verification of employment letters from my employer detailing my guaranteed pay, and written letters of explanation from myself. There was a lot of back and forth and hurry up and wait. These were stressful times.
- Last week of February - Received the final approval from the lender and did a final walkthrough with the builder. The builder assured me everything had been fixed.
- The literal day before closing - I wired funds to the title company. Then get a call from the builder that surprise, the sewer line issues had not been fixed at all and that closing would now be delayed by at least two weeks since they had to drill through the foundation of our house to fix the belly in the sewer line. We were extremely disappointed and upset the builder lied to us at the final inspection saying everything was already fixed.
- My realtor went to bat for us and made sure the builder made repairing our house their priority #1. We got our funds wired back to us and she was also able to negotiate a small cash incentive for us as compensation for their fuck up. More anxious waiting ensued. The bright side is that we are saving money on what could have become a costly repair down the road.
- March 16th - Closing day. We did a final final walkthrough of the place and the builder laid out exactly where and what repairs were done, including the documentation to prove it. We had zero issues at the closing office. I signed about 60 pieces of paper and then my wife and I were handed the keys! To clarify, I am the only one on the mortgage but we are both on the deed.
Two weeks later, we still love the house and are happy to be homeowners. It has everything we need and we are happy.
