2023.03.21 20:47 JSkywalker93 Screen Burn-in

Inquisitive Universe: Good evening guys how is everyone?
Let's quickly look at Screen burn in.
Now before we start we can talk about the things that screen burn in is not.
No it doesn't mean that your screen caught fire or that it has literally burnt. Absolutely not.
It also does not mean that your display panel has melted or that one component has burnt.
When it comes it to screen burn, I have heard a lot of funny things about it. 😂
A screen burn-in, also known as image burn-in or ghost image is a discoloration of areas over an electronic display.
As we should know, a screen is made up of pixels. These pixels are what light up to display the images on your screen.
They work by displaying something and then switching to something else and after that something else...and so on.
However, just like all silicon technology, the pixels on a display have a lifespan. With every use, they grow older. As they switch from one image or colours to another, they age.
This is one of the reasons I'm not very sold on very high refresh rates like 120Hz or 144Hz.
They cause displays to age really fast.
So if you tend to use only one particular app that shows on one area of your screen a lot, that area is going to get old faster than the others.
This means that that area of the display will then slowly lose it's ability to reset and display something else.
As a result, the last image that was shown is what would remain on the screen.
People who use their keyboards a lot would see the ghost of their keyboards on the screen. Instagrammers would see the IG logo permanently. Same goes for the Twitter folk.
In extreme cases, it may just turn black.
If you tend to leave your screen lit up for a long time and stay put on only one app (e.g Facebook), you’re definitely inviting screen burn. This is because the part of the screen displaying the F logo of facebook will age faster and the F may be burned into your screen.
Using a device at top brightness for long periods of time is not healthy for a smartphone display. Staying on a single app like Facebook, Opera mini or Snapchat just tends to compound the problem. Excessive gaming too could also be a contributing factor as well.
LCD and OLEDs tend to react differently to overuse and aging.
LCDs do not light themselves, instead the pixel is separate from the backlight so the pixels tend to last longer and are more resistant to screen burn.
In fact, if another image is purposely displayed over the burnt-in culprit, it slowly fades away and the pixels can then reset.
As a result, LCDs do not suffer from true screen burn-in. They suffer from what is otherwise known as Image persistence or Temporary image retention.
OLEDs and AMOLED on the other hand tend to succumb to screen burn more easily.
This is because the pixels on an AMOLED screen do two things i.e. display information and light up the screen.
So if a pixel ages or is damaged, there's no backlight to keep it lit up. It slowly dies and eventually turns black.
Finally how to avoid screen burn in, especially if you use an AMOLED. LCDs no too get issue but AMOLED...
  1. Reduce screen brightness
  2. Never use at max brightness for long periods
  3. Reduce screen time out
  4. Avoid staying on one page or app for too long
  5. Give your phone breaks in-between use
  6. Use dark mode. Dark mode is useless on LCDs but highly effective on AMOLEDs

Chapter 2: Now Is Found

The moment the Into the Black entered Sol, the human’s home system, various transmissions and radio signals poured in. At first, the captain and the rest of the crew thought that humanity was well and truly alive. But upon closer inspection of the deluge of signals they were receiving, they realized they were nothing more than automated warnings, echoes, and ghost signals bouncing around the countless derelict ships, stations, habitats, and arcologies that surrounded nearly every world and moon in the system. The place was a mass grave, far greater than any of the previous systems. In fact, this system was the most developed Ohmata had ever seen. The Galactic Union’s capital is the most advanced system in the GU, and it pales compared to the level of development of the human home system!
The sheer amount of death and destruction was frightening. Entire fleets worth of ships clumped together in the void of space. Their own mass creating a small gravity, pulling them together and fashioning massive hulks. While also creating hazardous clouds of metal debris, more than a few moving fast enough to rip the Black to shreds, should they not be vigilant. Constructs the size of cities floated aimlessly, stuck within the confines of the star’s influence. Mobile defense platforms, which once bristled with the finest weapons humanity could field, lay battered and broken amongst the many wrecks that called Sol home. Humanity did not go down without a fight, that much was for certain. If anyone ever called them cowards, Ohmata would simply show them the recorded footage of their home system to prove the naysayers otherwise.
There looked to be more metal strewn about from the battles and destroyed ships alone than in every GU fleet combined, and more than a few worlds, too. The difference in the ships was obvious. The human vessels were boxy, utilitarian. They did their jobs, and they did them well. Many of which appeared to be nothing more than massive guns someone built a ship around, then put more guns on that.
The Nemesis were different; they weren’t boxy and rigid angles like the humans, but not totally smooth either. They had a far more organic look with multiple bends and curves, but the surfaces seemed to be rough and bumpy, and unlike the human ships, almost none were symmetrical. But though they were asymmetrical, there existed patterns in the various derelicts. As if they were variations of preexisting models, updated and expanded upon with time. In comparison, most GU ships were a happy medium. They had the bends and curves like the Nemesis, but were neatly symmetrical like the human ships.
Looking past the destruction and death, the system was fairly average. Four rocky worlds, four gas giants, and several smaller bodies here and there. The gas giants still had the broken remains of floating cities scattered across them, while their moons contained colonies and stations galore. But what was most interesting were the third and fourth rocky worlds. The fourth one had depressingly little green on it. It was mostly red, with an occasional white streak indicating clouds. It was highly developed, ruined cities ranged across its surface freely. But it bore the marks of war none the less. It would be a prime candidate for collecting samples, as long as the surface wasn’t too hazardous. Humanity did have a fetish for nuclear annihilation towards their end, after all.
The third planet, the third planet was something else. It was a grey husk devoid of life. Its moon had a massive crater denting its facade, with many smaller ones marking its surface. They stood out prominently. Fresh wounds of war contrasted against natural meteor strikes. The debris from the lunar surface and whatever had caused the impact was already starting to form the semblance of a ring around the planet. And like everywhere else, the surrounding space was choked with battle debris, though most had collected in the planet’s “proto ring”. There was so much debris that they could barely scan the planet, and what parts they could get to was so irradiated that a signal couldn’t penetrate from such a distance. Which meant if they wanted to scan the home world of these legendary humans, they would have to get closer. Which, frankly, was currently impossible.
“Nix’Fa, can you maneuver through that debris field?” Ohmata asked, while peering down at her console.
“No ma’am. A shuttle may get through, but it won’t have any of the equipment necessary to scan the planet. At least, not at any reasonable rate,” Nix’Fa replied. She, too, was looking over her console at potential flight paths.
First Lieutenant Qhaax spoke up from her station. “We may not need to actually scan the planet to learn more about humanity, captain. Most of the planet is a flattened, irradiated death pit, but the debris field around it still contains warships from both sides, some in remarkable condition. In fact, several derelicts appear to still have power, even after thousands of years. We may be able to board them using a shuttle and extract data from any intact computer systems we find. And while not exactly human, there is a Nemesis ship relatively close to the edge of the field. It would be a good first target.”
“Then we’ll change our plan to that. Qhaax, contact Kitern and tell her to get her marines suited up, send a techy or two and some researchers with them as well. You’ll have to contact Tentzonta to get her to let some of her engineers loose for once, and Glevar for her researchers. Though you won’t have to convince her, she’ll be jumping at the opportunity. Nix’Fa, start plotting them a course, and we’ll go from there, understood?”
The two responded with a crisp, yes ma’am, and got to work on their respective tasks.
-
“Kitern, can you hear me?” Ohmata’s voice called out from Kitern’s suit’s comms.
“Loud and clear, cap, whatcha need?” Commander Kitern responded as she stowed away several more energy cells for her weapon. She was a digitigrade, feline like mammal known as a Lioranian, with thick paw like hands that held deadly claws within them. They were still thin and nimble enough to manipulate objects accurately, but most importantly, pull a trigger. Her kind also had a slightly elongated snout, long tail, and top forward facing ears. Their eyes were dark, but a few bore mutations which lightened the iris to a sky blue. And their pupils are vertical, but would dilate periodically to give better depth perception and low light visibility. Her species’ coats ranged from a dark tan to a bright yellow gold and had multiple coat patterns of varying intensities. She personally had a dusty tan coat with slight stripe markings originating from her spine, but quickly fading as they reached around to her abdomen and chest.
“You already have a basic rundown about what to do. But I just wanted to remind you, we marked an entrance for you through some old battle damage on a derelict Nemesis ship that is close to the edge of the debris field. Enter, make your way to the power source, secure the area, and set up a pressurized zone if possible so the techies can work in peace. If you can’t, oh well, they can work in their suits. Also, you see anything living, as unlikely as that is, don’t go shooting it. Try to capture or reason with it, but if it does anything stupid, then do what you and your girls do best.”
Kitern smiled maliciously. “Aye, aye, captain. We’ll keep the civvies alive and kick’n, get the goods and be back in no time.”
“Then I leave the rest to you. Oh, try not to mess with the shuttle’s controls while it’s on autopilot this time. It’ll be weaving through a debris field too compact to get the Black into. Any rescue efforts will take a long time, longer than what you’ll have, so don’t touch the throttle like last time!” Ohmata raised her voice jokingly, playfully reminding Kitern of the last time they were on a shuttle together in such conditions.
“Ha! Dontcha worry, I’ll be in the back. Onsa will be in the pilot’s seat for this go. She’s a better flyer anyways,” Kitern played.
“Alright then, get done and come back, preferable alive. Ohmata out.” There was a click as Ohmata closed the channel.
“Hmph, always do.” Kitern had been staring at a random wall while talking to Ohmata. With the call over, she turned to her squad. “Alright girls, get your shit together and get to the shuttle. Oh, and keep your hands to yourself, Hran is coming along, I don’t want any complaints from him, or hands where they shouldn’t be, got it?” she barked, eyeing each of the three other marines, more specifically the youngest two.
“What if he lets us?” one of said marines asked jokingly.
“It’ll be a cold day on Ca’tab before that happens, Asteli,” Kitern replied.
“You never know, we might just wear him down finally, right Gre’Namra?” the perky Venanian replied.
“How many times do I have to tell you? Just call me Namra, and I doubt it. Men like to be wined and dined. Take them out, pay for a fancy meal, maybe buy them something. You know, the usual,” her counterpart, a Drae’Ildan, responded.
Kitern sighed. “Or how about not harassing anyone and act like a decent sentient, you hornbags? Now, shut it and get to the shuttle. Dentala you’ll have your work cut out for you keeping track of these two today.”
“Not as big of a job as keeping track of you, I pity Onsa,” Dentala said as she lifted a heavy kinetic slugger with a red hand, another Venanian.
Kitern chuffed deeply, her species version of a chuckle. “Me too! But, you might wanna put on a glove before we go out. Might help with the whole vacuum thing.” Dentala looked at her hand, surprised that she had forgotten it, before slipping one on. It attached to her bracer and made an airtight seal, forming an armored gauntlet. With that, the four marines left to join their fifth member in the shuttle.
As they left the locker room, Asteli mumbled under her breath. “We wouldn’t do that. We’re not assholes,” she said, addressing Kitern’s assertion of harassment.
“Well, you sound like one,” Gre’Namra replied quietly. After that, they kept their heads down and trudged along with their commanding officer.
A short jaunt later, they were passing through the hangar bay’s airlock. They were greeted by the Black’s only two shuttles. One, small and cramped, meant for scanning dangerous locations that they couldn’t get to with the ship. Logically, that would mean it was best suited to scan Earth. But even its equipment was not powerful enough to breach the radiation. Not without descending into the planet's atmosphere and becoming so irradiated they would practically glow in the dark. And while they could get Aphosi to pilot the shuttle remotely, its scanners aren't able to scan such a broad area like an entire planet. They were more meant to target small, specific locations.
The second shuttle was much larger. It was built to transport supplies and the handful of rovers they had in storage, to make excursions to planets. The smaller shuttle had permanently extended wings and large thrusters on the rear. The larger of the two, simply dubbed Shuttle One, could fold its wings. And had a variety of thrusters located across the ship for better maneuverability in space, and atmospheric thrusters embedded in the center of each wing for flight in atmo. But it also had two large engines in the back for forward thrust, just above its rear ramp.
Walking over to shuttle one, Onsa, the other Lioranian in the squad, was already waiting for them in the pilot’s seat. In the rear seating area were two engineers and two scientists, wearing grey, lightly armored EVA suits that looked to be made of cloth, but were instead a variety of advance polymers and flexible but insulative materials. Most of the helmet was a large, one way transparent material, allowing for increased awareness while sacrificing protection. In comparison, the marine’s helmets had no exterior window, instead a suite of miniature sensors embedded in their black armored helmets allowed them to see through an internal display screen. The helmets appeared to be smooth metal from a distance, only up close could you see the microscopic sensors embedded in them.
The marine’s suits held many of the same features as the civilians, but were black and had thick armored plates over vital areas and on select parts of their extremities, with thinner, non-metal armor segments filling in the gaps. Both suit types had an array of pockets and hideaways, each holding their respective tools of the trade. Regardless of the accessories, or level of protection, each was specially crafted to accommodate for the unique physiologies of the different species.
Had the ship and its equipment not made with each of their species in mind, they would have worn generic multi species suits. Instead of the pre-built features tailored for their specific anatomy, they would be covered with a thick insulated, pliable material that fitted over the horns, tails, and crests and shrank until it was tightly pressed against every nook and cranny. Aside from personalized helmets, each species’ leg sections and gloves/gauntlets catered for whether they were plantigrade, digitigrade, or for how many digits they may possess.
Hran being a male Venanian, had small horns jutting out from his temples. But because his horns were so small, his helmet did not need any special features. Thus was fairly plain. It looked like a sphere that had been slightly squished in on the sides. Unlike the females of his species, who had much larger, curved horns, their helmets were marked with two twin armored segments sticking up like antenna. Otherwise, their helmets were just as “stubby” as his, for their flatter faces. At least, in comparison to the other species onboard.
The Shednae with their elaborate head crests and long faces, had a stubby mohawk like metal protrusion for their crests to fit in, and longer helmets to account for their heads. The Drae’Ildan’s helmets were similar to the Shednae. In fact, they could be mistaken for one another if not for the lack of a head crest. Lastly, the Lioranian helmets were quite plain, aside from the extended “snout” for their slightly longer faces and two nubs to house their ears located on the top of their heads.
Those with tails were likewise afforded a special area to put them, instead of the shrinking material normal for such species. The Shednae have a small knob like space for their short tails. While the Venanians and Lioranians had long thin tails, they could be coiled in the suit. Drae’Ildan suits had a much longer and thicker tail section that looked burdensome but was quite flexible. Their suits were also equipped with a much larger array of sensors to assist them, as the Drae’Ildan’s natural sensory organs were significantly dulled in such tight confines.
“I see the grunts have finally made their appearance. Why did you bother bringing so many guns with you? It’s a derelict that has been floating dead in space for thousands of cycles. There won’t be anything living on board.”, one of the engineers nagged, as the marines ducked into the shuttle. Though her helmet was on, it was clear she was a part of engineering by the orange stripe running along the left of her suite, and left sleeve. Mimicking their uniforms.
“And a fine hello to you Kass, you too, Hran,” Kitern said as she sat down across from the two Venanians and buckled in. Hran simply nodded silently. Kitern continued, “And as for your question, we have no idea what we’ll find. You want to be stuck out in space with no way of protecting yourself if something is there? Yeah, I’m sure it’s empty too. Doesn’t mean I’m taking any chances.” Kass snorted at her reply.
“Shavizi, Jurwa, what about you two, think we’ve over prepared?” Kitern asked the two scientists to her left. Their stripes were blue.
“One can never be too prepared! Though the heavy slugger seems a bit excessive, but as long as you don’t drop it on me, I have no complaints,” Jurwa, a Shednae, said gleefully, practically bouncing in her seat.
“I agree, organic enemies aside. The ship may have automated defenses still functioning. If so, they will have to be dealt with accordingly.” Shavizi added. Yet another Venanian.
“See Kass, they get it,” Kitern grinned smugly underneath her helmet as she leaned back and buckled herself in.
As the others sat down and buckled in, Onsa turned in her seat to see if they were all ready. Everyone confirming they were. She turned back around and started up the shuttle. Quickly putting it into autopilot, but still keeping her hands on the controls just in case. The shuttle slipped out of the bay, passing through the atmospheric retention field, and pitching down and to the left, heading for the derelict Nemesis ship.
As the debris field is so dense and dangerous, the Into the Black was several hundred kilometers away, clear of any potential danger. As such, the trip would take around five minutes before they reached the field, another six to navigate the debris, as it was so hazardous. The Nemesis ship in question was near the edge of the debris field, but still mostly intact, with some power readings emanating from within, a perfect target for research.
-
“We’re coming alongside it now. Once we have successfully magnetized to its hull with the docking clamps, I’ll decompress the shuttle and you can open him up,” Onsa called out, just barely turning her head back in their direction.
Kitern activated her comms so everyone could hear her clearly once the air was siphoned out. “Gotcha. Scans show two distinct points of power readings. Both look to be in the same place, or at least really damn close. We’ll take a right once we get into the ship and follow the corridor until it leads to a three-way intersection. Then we make a left, then a right, and we’ll be on track. The room in question will be along that corridor. Keep your eyes and sensors open for anything that looks Nemesis-y.”
“Oh, like the entire ship?” Kass chimed in.
Kitern rolled her eyes. “Onsa, give a countdown.”
Onsa nodded her head. “Affirmative. Decompression commencing in three… two… one… starting.” There was an audible hiss that slowly faded away as the air in the shuttle was pulled back into storage tanks for later use. “Decompression complete, safe to open the door,” she confirmed over their comms.
“Opening door. Don’t go floating off,” Kitern joked as she pressed a button near the hatch, causing it to slide open silently. Before them was a gaping hole in the side of what looked like a ship that had grown large warts. The human beacons had mentioned that the Nemesis ships weren’t smooth, but the reality was a bit more unsettling up close. The humans weren’t sure why the Nemesis ships were so… bumpy. But they knew it wasn’t actually part of the building process, as newly refurbished or repaired Nemesis vessels lacked the warty exterior. But they had seen no importance in investigating the reason, as they had no tactical or structural advantage. Humanity theorized they were damage, but what could cause metal to ripple and bubble? So it remains a mystery to this day.
Kitern lifted a foot, causing the magnetic lock on that boot to disengage automatically, then re-engage when she put pressure on it. Allowing her to walk forward until she was looking down into the hole. Kitern put a foot on the lip of the shuttle, and bent forward, pushing herself into the opening.
As Kitern floated into the ship, she could see the corridors were circular, with strange partitions along the edges. The partitions didn’t seem to move or close, so she guessed they were more decorative support beams than actual doorways. A second later, she put out a hand to stop herself from colliding with the far wall, and pushed downward, boots magnetizing to the floor. Upon magnetizing, she immediately lifted her weapon. It was a small energy-based firearm, similar in size and function to an SMG.
Looking down both directions of the corridor showed nothing of interest other than more of those strange support beams and closed bulkhead doors on either end. She noted the twisted metal and battle damage in the corridor caused by whatever had impacted the hull.
Before everyone had touched down, she started making her way toward their objective. She continued on until she reached the bulkhead door at the end of the corridor. It was not fully closed, only partially, allowing someone to grip between the two sections and pull them apart. She did just that. As the door slowly opened, Dentala came up behind her and lent her strength to the task. Grunting in exertion, they pulled the door apart until they could easily walk through. Kitern silently fist bumped Dentala on the shoulder in thanks before she continued on, weapon held at the ready.
As they proceeded through the derelict, signs of battle began to appear. At first, it was only a few scorch marks or kinetic impact craters on the wall. Then, what looked like dried blood from some ancient creature. It had aged into a sickly dark green color with a hint of yellow. A quick scan showed that no genetic material could be retrieved, it had long degraded into nothing. Though some sort of information could certainty be gleamed from the stain if they searched long enough, but the sample was unimportant, as it was not a focus of the mission. Pressing on, the signs of battle intensified, as well the amount of spilled blood. At one point, an entire corridor looked like it had been painted in viscera.
The team could only speculate on what had happened. Was it a mutiny? Civil war between surviving Nemesis forces trapped in the Sol system? Or perhaps the humans had something to do with it? But there was one thing on everyone’s mind as they walked through the ancient carnage. Where were the bodies? They hadn’t passed a single corpse yet, just blood stains.
“Captain Kitern, do you suppose we can slow down and so I can scan the ship a bit more? I can’t get a proper reading while moving like this,” Shavizi requested from the back. She had some sort of tool and was waving it back and forth across the surface of the corridor.
“You can scan the ship when we stop, and that will be when we get to those power signals. And once we make sure the place is secure,” Kitern responded, weapon still up at her shoulder as she swept the hallway.
“If that is your order,” Shavizi relented, but still attempted to scan everything they passed, incomplete or not.
It didn’t take long before they arrived at where the Black said the power readings were. They had weaved about the ship a bit more than desired. Several bulkhead doors were completely sealed shut, causing them to detour, but they managed it in the end. They were now standing in front of a large single door; it was nowhere near as large as the bulkhead doors that sealed off entire corridors, but it was large enough to allow passage with room to spare on all sides.
It too bore damage from whatever conflict had occurred within the ship. The door’s access panel was damaged, and the surrounding wall panels warped. Preventing them from directly interacting with the door.
“This is the place; my scanner is already picking up power readings from here. Hran, be a dear and get out the interface tools. We’ll see if this door has power first, instead of brute forcing our way through first thing,” Kass stated. Hran silently carried out his orders, unpacking a variety of tools they may need.
After pulling off several of the panels to see if they allowed access to the door’s wiring, they eventually found the right one. Sadly, a closer inspection revealed that the door, like nearly the entire ship, had no power, meaning it couldn’t be opened by the press of a button like they wanted.
“Oh well, do what you do best, Kitern,” Kass shrugged as she and Hran began packing up their tools.
“Eh, worth a shot. Privates, if you please,” Kitern motioned to the door for the two young marines to take a crack at it. They both replied with a crisp, yes ma’am, and quickly got to work trying to pry open the door.
It took a little more effort than they thought, but over time it slowly slid further and further open, until Gre’Namra wedged herself in between the door and frame, and used her entire body to push it open. Asteli joined in when it widened enough for the both of them. Together, they pushed it fully open, the door slowly recessing into the wall. Revealing an old dusty room with several long bed-like pods.
“Thank you, girls. Now clear the room while you’re at it. Though by now any baddies would have chewed you up,” Kitern ordered. The two did just that. Thankfully, the entire room could be seen from the doorway, so there really wasn’t any clearing. Just looking behind the pods for anything not so friendly.
During their little search, they noticed one bed had several lights flickering on its side. They pointed it out to the others. Immediately, Kass and Shavizi pushed them aside to get to it. Drooling over it like children being offered sweets.
“I wonder what this is?! After so many thousands of years, it still has power. I thought those beacons were incredible enough, but this is something else!” Kass said to no one in particular.
Shavizi had been scanning the bed, as well as its neighbors, while Kass looked it over. “Hmm. The pods have a sliding covering that encloses the occupants. All the others are open, yet this one is closed.” Shavizi tapped at her scanner a bit. “Wait… the other energy signature… it’s coming from inside it!” she said astonished, while moving a hand over the top of the slid that covered the pod. As she did, thousands of years’ worth of dust floated away from where she dragged her hand. Allowing a small amount of light to break free from within.
Noticing this, Shavizi leaned forward and peered inside the pod. Her eyes went wide as her mind tried to make sense of what she was seeing. “GET BACK! DON’T TOUCH IT!” she screamed, but was too late. Kass, who was now crouched down near the base of the bed, had pressed a finger to one of the flickering lights just as Shavizi yelled her warning. All Kass had time to do was turn her head up and mutter a confused, “huh?”, before the covering of the pod slid open, unleashing its occupant onto the galaxy.

Hello once again! First things first. If you see the name Osan, please point it out to me. It is supposed to be Onsa, but the program I use to write the story changed the name to Osan for some reason. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the cliffhanger! This chapter is meant to help further detail the various species and their features, and of course set up for many things to come!
Also, in my last story. I had a lot of flashback sequences to add in fluff and give backstory to the MC. While I don't want overuse it in this story, I do want to have flashback esque sequences that are basically just battles of the Human-Nemesis war (recorded combat footage recovered from human ships and installations), introduce new characters, or maybe give further development to preexisting characters. The flashback sequences will be called Orphan: Tales of the Past and won't begin until a certain point in the main story. Once that point is reached, the side stories will pop up every once in a while in place of the main story chapters. Or, if I fell as if its safe to push the story ahead, you'll get the main story and a side story in one week.
That's it for the week folks! See you next week!

2023.03.21 19:04 Boltsnouns Fn Lock permanently?

I've been trying to figure this out and can't seem to find any answers. By default Windows 11 turns off the Fn Lock every time the computer turns on or wakes up. Is this a default setting for the OS that can be adjusted, or is this a setting that can be permanently changed through a registry edit?
I have a Samsung GalaxyBook 3 Pro and I'm trying to get an answer for several friends on this, and possibly change it on my work computer. It's a huge pain having to constantly press Fn+F12 every time these laptops are opened just to adjust basic settings like volume or brightness, and no one seems to know the answer as far as I can tell.

2023.03.21 18:27 CMVB Future History Poll: Where should the US build its Empire?

I have, to paraphrase a history podcast, a deep dark expansionist heart. Most of my notions of future history inevitably include painting the map that sort of navy blue that we all use for the US. However, I can never decide where, exactly, the US should expand, and just annexing everyone is too boring.
So, you're put in charge of US foreign policy when the nation has come around to my way of thinking. The borders will expand, that much is agreed upon. However, the decision of where to expand has not been made. Where should the US start adding states?
- The Western Hemisphere, resolving that petty little debate about what 'American' means. Everyone who can claim that denonym is now a US citizen anyway! This also resolves all border issues, as there are no borders, and the entire continental system is united, from sea to shining sea, from Greenland to Tiera Del Fuego. Integrating all these generally much poorer economies and dealing with the linguistic shift will be a challenge, though,
- The Anglosphere (Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, maybe Ireland), generally dodging the bullet on integrating poorer economies and linguistic division. As an added advantage, it really will annoy the British. The Royal family might get to keep a sovereign microstate. However, this empire is very far flung, making it difficult to integrate economically, even if every local economy in it is well off. On the bright side, the US is already the undisputed naval hegemon, well positioned to secure such a far flung territory, and this would open up no new land borders. The US also loses a staunch ally in the UN Security Council.
- NATO and the EU. The Greece to America's Rome, fractious, reasonably wealthy, and dependent on American security guarantees anyway. Time to to rule over them for so long that they see themselves as the real Americans. But is it worth losing two allies on the permanent security council? And, of course, annexation will gradually lead to cultural homogenization, ruining so much of the charm of Europe for tourists. Linguistic divides might be more of an issue than with uniting the Western Hemisphere, but maybe not, since no other language will come close to English.
(For all the non-Americans reading this, this is all in good fun and you can stop reading here. For all the Americans reading this, wait for further instructions, and just be nice to our future countrymen in the meantime)

2023.03.21 16:53 dentistkor Please consider dupixent

I have had bad eczema for almost a decade now (I am 21), however last year the eczema spread from my hands and inner elbows to literally my entire face. I was in agony, almost lost the entirety of my right eyebrow, and had difficulty opening my eyes. I looked like i was jumped for about 4 straight months. I couldn’t work and had difficulty attending school, topical steroids did not work at all. I was on oral prednisolone for upwards of a month, making my eczema not as painful but still super visible (pink raised soft skin instead of bright red flaky skin all over my face), not to mention the worst case of moon face ive ever had despite being lighter than ive been in years. Enough was enough.
I have had a lifelong fear of needles, but my situation was so dire i decided to get on dupixent. I stopped all steroids and replaced them with small and infrequent applications of protopic. After a few months my eczema cleared 70%, and my eyebrow came partially back (it looks like a deliberate style choice now lol). 4 months later it looks like i dont have eczema at all (tho eyebrow still has a patch missing). I only flare immediately after drinking, likely due to the protopic, but the flares subside after 20 min and am back to normal. I am used to injecting myself now, dont even fear it.
I highly recommend talking to your derms about this, honestly saved my livelihood. A slight jab every 2 weeks is better than a life of agony and a permanent lack of self confidence.

2023.03.21 16:43 TheDarkVoid79 The Romans were trying to contain something

15th of May
A couple days ago we marched out of our legion’s fort without being told where we were going. Many of us believed we were to be deployed to the east, where rumors said that the Parthians were stirring up trouble again. Others thought that we were bound for Illyricum, where they say a rebellion was brewing. Then there were the few who, in hushed tones, said that the governor was calling upon vexillationes from the frontier legions in order to form an army that would usurp power from the Emperor.
However, all of our guesses proved to be wrong, as we were all shocked to learn that our destination was not far from our previous posting. Instead of being deployed to a far off province, we were instead sent to central Gaul. We had no clue what our purpose there could be, but as we entered a thickly forested area, we soon encountered a large fortress of stone.
It was odd to have such a large and formidable fortification in a place so far from the frontier and nowhere near any strategically important city or town. It seemed so random and out of place, yet it was there. However, that was not the only thing that caught our attention. Spreading out from both flanks of the fort were tall stone walls, although its ramparts were facing inwards instead of outwards. This made me realize that the fort was only a part of a bigger system of fortifications. However, the inner facing ramparts made me question why it was designed like that.
Halting outside the entrance, we were ordered to set up camp there and await further instructions. We later learned that the detachment we were supposed to replace was not scheduled to leave till the next morning and so the barracks assigned to us were still occupied. The men grumbled at the thought of having to sleep another night in tents with nothing but a wool blanket on the ground. It was clear that they missed the beds back at the old fort and were longing to sleep comfortably again in a barracks.
I scoffed at their complaints. They should consider themselves lucky that they no longer had to dig defensive earthworks around the camp, seeing that we were so close to a strong fortification already. Many of the legionnaires were still weak and inexperienced, new recruits who had never been in the campaign. I had hoped that the upcoming campaign season against the barbarians would give them the experience they badly needed. However, the gods seemed to be frowning upon me, as our cohort was sent to this lone fortress far from the frontier.
Being so far from the nearest settlement and being so heavily guarded, I couldn’t help but wonder what was being guarded there. Was the province’s treasury in there? Was it grain for the legions? Perhaps large stores of armor and weaponry? These possibilities crossed my mind, but I quickly dismissed them all. It couldn’t be any of those, because none of them would require a fort so large that contained a detachment which, from my initial estimates, would have numbered at least three thousand men. Not only that, if they were protecting something inside, then why were the ramparts facing inwards instead of outwards? I had too many questions at that time and little to no answers.
However, my curiosities would be answered later that night.
At nightfall, once the men were asleep and the watch posted, the senior centurion leading our vexillatio gathered all of us centurions and told us that we were to head to the fort and meet with the senior tribune in charge. The senior tribune greeted us at the principia and wasted no time in explaining about the fortress under his charge.
The fortress, he explained, was actually a wall of circumvallation. This immediately piqued our interest, as we knew that the only reason such a wall would be made was in order to contain something inside. However, the more he explained, the more confused we became.
He told us that under the orders of the Emperor, the walls, and forts supporting it, were built to contain a phenomenon that only the gods could explain. Seeing the confusion in our faces, he gave us a nod and said that it would be easier to understand once we saw for ourselves. Then, without another word, he gestured us to follow him and led us away from the principia and up on the stone ramparts.
Once atop the ramparts, I saw something that made me feel true fear. I had thought that I knew what fear felt before. I had stood in the front ranks against hordes of barbarians, fought in battles where the odds were clearly against us and the chance of death were high. But none of that could compare to the sensation that ran through me the moment I saw what the walls were for. It seemed like my previous experiences were nothing but a mere punch on the face, while this thing in front of me gave me a stab directly to the heart.
In the middle of a barren lifeless field was something that I can only describe as a black eye. An eye that seemed to be staring directly at me, even if pointed directly up at the night sky. Protruding from the ground, this unnatural thing unnerved me and my fellow centurions. Briefly glancing at the senior tribune, his face held a neutral expression, although I could tell that he too felt uneasy while standing there.
After taking in what we saw, the senior tribune explained to us that the thing in the field is what they call the ‘Eye of Dis Pater’. They didn’t know its origins, but they did know that three years ago creatures that came out from the eye began wandering the land and annihilating a settlement near the forest. A few survivors, however, managed to escape and inform the governor, who dispatched vexillationes from the frontier legions to stop the creatures, before building a wood and earth rampart around the eye.
Ever since then the ramparts were improved and turned into stone and had towers that had ballistae mounted atop for additional support. A rotation of vexillationes from the frontier legions was also kept in order to garrison this fort and prevent any more creatures from roaming out and threatening Imperial land and citizens.
He firmly told us that it was now our new duty to spend a year holding the line against the Eye of Dis Pater. He informed us that the eye spewed out creatures once in a while in an attempt to invade our realm. These invasions were sometimes small, sometimes big, but whatever the size we were supposed to stop them at all costs.
Before dismissing us, he reminded us that our presence here and the existence of the eye was to be kept secret. The Emperor, he explained, did not want to cause panic among the masses. Because of that, all letters written by us and our men are to be reviewed by his staff to ensure that no mention of what was going on here would leak.
I’m not really sure if these orders of his include such documentation I’m making, but just to be sure I’ll keep these papers tucked away and hidden.

Our detachment was finally let into the fort. We were greeted by the sight of the cohort we were replacing, as they stood by the entrance, ready to march out and back to their legion. Looking at the faces of these men, I noticed that many of them were just staring forward. Seemingly drained of life, the centurions, optiones, and legionnaires had the aura of emptiness. It was as if they were a group of walking dead men.
A few of them did make a few glances towards us, but the expressions on their faces were far from positive. Instead, they stared at us with eyes that seemed to be trying to warn us.
Making our way through the fortifications, members of the senior tribune’s staff guided us towards our posting. During this point, we had to go up the ramparts and so the men got their first glance of the eye. Just like us centurions the night before, their reaction was one of fear, as some halted to stare at the eye. However, a quick slap of my vine staff got them going again. Although I felt uneasy being exposed to the eye, I tried my best to hide it. We centurions are supposed to know no emotions aside from anger after all.
Many of the men, however, did have questions in regards to the eye. All we told them was that was what we were supposed to protect the Empire from.
Reaching our posting, our cohort was assigned to a castellum on the northern portion of the wall. The rest of the day was then spent cleaning the barracks the previous cohort had left and setting it up to become our new homes for the year.
My century had been assigned by the senior centurion to mount a guard atop the ramparts. Choosing ten men, I was frustrated to see them resist and tell me that they would not stand there and be exposed to the eye. However, after threatening to flog them, and after a few hits from my vine staff, they were eventually convinced to go up under the watch of my optio.
Later that day, us centurions were called up once more by the senior tribune and once more found ourselves at his principia. Like the night before, he wasted no time and immediately led us outside to another structure that resembles a stable. However, the sounds that came out from it did not sound like horses.
Entering the building, we were greeted by the sight of a cage with a strange creature locked inside of it. Standing tall as a man, but having skin that resembled scorched flesh, the creature had no nose, eyes or ears, but seemed to be aware of our presence in front of it. In the area where the mouth should be, a wide slit was located. Every once in a while, it would open the slit to reveal long dagger-like teeth.
However, out of all its features, the one that stood out the most were the six arms protruding from its sides. Located where a man’s arms normally should be, the creature had three long bony looking arms on each of its sides. These arms were nearly triple the length of a normal man’s arm and, instead of ending with a hand, it had a sharp dagger like tip. It was due to these arms that the creature got its name, aranea.
The senior tribune explained to us that the araneas would be the most common creature that we would encounter coming out of the eye. He said that they ran fast and came out in hordes larger than any barbarian horde that we could have possibly seen before. Because of their numbers, they would often pile up before the walls and eventually form a ramp for other araneas and creatures to get up on the wall. Because of this we were warned never to underestimate them.
He then advised us that a strong firm thrust from our gladii would be enough to penetrate its skin and make it bleed. To be most effective at killing it, he told us to aim for its chest.
The senior tribune then allowed us to approach the cage in order to get a better look of the creature. We moved closer, but stayed back far enough that we would be out of the range of its arms. As we observed the creature stare and make a low howling at us, the senior tribune told us that this specific aranea was captured in order to familiarize new detachments on one of the creatures the eye releases. He then said that it would be moved to our castellum tomorrowing morning so that our men would see what they would be up against when the time comes.
After leaving the building, the senior tribune then said that his staff would provide us centurions with sketches of the two other creatures that came out of the eye. We were told to familiarize ourselves with these sketches, learn the weaknesses listed with the notes that came with them, and then teach our men the things we learned.

The saxa are large four legged creatures, with skin that resembles stone. Their size can range from that of a horse to as large as a two-story building. Due to their size and build, they can be a threat to the walls. The only counter for them is a good shot from the ballista. Compared to the araneas they are much fewer in numbers and the eye only spews out a couple dozen of them at a time.
Meanwhile, the spica is another threat that could prove deadly if they are able to get up the walls. Round with spikes all over its fleshy body, these creatures are often seen rolling around with araneas. Waiting till the araneas piled enough to form a ramp up the wall, the spica would then wreck havoc among the defenders at the rampart, as it would roll and slam against the vulnerable and unarmored feet of the legionnaires. The best tactic against them is to have auxiliary archers and pilum armed legionnaires attack them from range before they could get up on the walls.

20th of June
After a month since our arrival, we finally experienced our first attack last night.
It occurred late into the night, the watch had just switched and I had just replaced the previous centurion on duty. Gazing out towards the eye, I could barely see its silhouette through the darkness of the night. From my position it looked like a hill, a large mound that rose from the ground. But unlike any hill, it gave out a sensation that made you feel it was staring back at you.
Making my way along the ramparts, I carefully checked each man on watch, making sure that they were awake and alert. After a month on duty here, many of the men were less hesitant to mount watch atop the walls. The men were still scared of the eye, because I know I still am, but after a month of duty here with nothing occuring, the calm monotony has allowed them to do their jobs knowing that the chances of danger were low.
However, just as we were getting comfortable with our current posting, the moment we feared the most happened. The eye began to unleash its terror.
Finishing my rounds and leaning against the rampart, I stared at the eye as I felt it stare back at me. I don’t know what secrets it holds, but I feared what was inside of it. If creatures like the are areanea came out of that thing, then who knows what powers are held within it.
Lost in thought about the eye and mysteries, I was suddenly and violently taken away from such musings when brightnest covered the whole surface of the eye. Gazing ahead and watching, I was shocked to see that the formerly pure black eye lit up and shone light all along the field. As it did so, it emitted a low humming sound that echoed in my ears.
This was it. We were told how it would look like when it was ready to spew out a new wave of monstrosities and this was how they said it would happen. Deep inside I felt scared and I was nearly taken over by so much fear that I felt unable to move.
But I was a centurion and I had a job to do. Taking a deep breath, I drew my gladius and alerted the rest of the cohort of the situation.
The next few moments were filed with centurions and optiones shouting and legionnaires rushing up to man the ramparts. Gathering my own century, I shouted out order, my voice trying to stand out from the humming noise that seemed to grow louder and louder.
Soon enough my century was fully deployed and ready on the rampart. With us were three of our cohort’s six centuries. The other two were back at the castellum, as they formed a reserve that was ready to plug up any breach that may form. Joining us on the ramparts were auxiliary archers, ready to provide ranged attacks. Together, our force was to protect the northern wall and make sure that none of the eye’s creatures get through.
Moments after our forces deployed, the first of the eye’s creatures began to come out. I don’t understand how they managed to go through a solid object, but I didn’t think too much about it at the time. I was more concerned about the numbers that were coming out, as it seemed that an endless wave of creatures tumbled out of the eye’s surface and began rushing through the field.
Initially, the eye was releasing hordes of araneas from its eastern facing section. From there the araneas stumbled and ran towards the eastern wall, whose archers began firing at them. However, as time went on, the eye began releasing araneas from all faces, and I soon ordered my men to prepare themselves.
A clump of around three hundred to four hundred araneas were the first to charge towards us. Behind them were even larger clumps, with the one numbering an estimated five hundred, and the next numbering around a thousand. However, even more came out of the eye and I quickly learned there was no point counting them.
As the araneas ran towards us, they let out a low howling sound, similar to the one made by the caged one we saw. However, instead of having one creature howl, this was in the many thousand. Their collective howls, combined with eye’s humming, made a noise that was both intimidating and frustrating. It made it hard for me to think and plane, while also making it difficult to give out orders.
Once the horde got closer, the auxiliary archers wasted no time letting loose their arrows against the approaching araneas. However, such ranged shots did not seem enough to stop them. Due to the distance and the power of the bows, the arrows merely poked their skin, lodging the tips on them, but not penetrating deep enough to make them bleed. Despite this, the archers kept on firing, littering the approaching hordes with arrows. Once in a while, a lucky shot would take out a creature, earning a cheer from the archer who brought it down.
Seeing them approach and noting that the arrows had little effect on them, some of the legionnaires under my command began to shake and glance towards the rear. Years of experience has told me what such acts meant and so I was careful to approach the legionnaire who turned their heads and gave them a light tap on their backs. They may be scared of the creatures in front of them, but I wanted to remind them that they should fear me more and what I would do to them if I catch them running away.
Soon the creatures were upon the defensive ditch and were stumbling into it. As they tripped and fell, some of the araneas impaled themselves on the sharpened wooden spikes lodged in the ditch. This obstacle slowed them down and I also knew that them being there meant that they were within range of our pila.
Giving the order, I soon had my men let loose their pila, as the other centuries of our cohort did the same. At this range the bows of our auxiliary archers were also becoming much more effective, as closer ranges meant more power for them. Because of this, our combined pila and arrow onslaught managed to bring down a good number of araneas, making the ditch a killing zone for them.
However, as their first ranks fell, those behind them continued, stepping on the bodies of the deceased creatures. Letting loose our second round of pila, we brought down another good number. Yet more of them, rushing forward and stumbling into the ditch. Eventually, there were so many araneas in the ditch that they managed to fill it up with their bodies. This meant that the hordes behind them were able to easily get over the obstacle and rush towards our walls.
It didn’t take long for the first of the araneas reach the base of our wall. Pressing themselves against it, they uselessly swung their many hands on the stone wall, trying to break it to no avail. Being pressed on by the creatures behind them, the leading araneas ended up being stuck where they were.
With my men having depleted their pila, those in the first ranks resorted to using their slings. Lobbing cast lead bullets with their slings, they and the archers continuously bombarded the araneas with ranged fire, knocking down and killing a good number of them.
Making my way to the first line of my century, I looked down with satisfaction as I watched the creatures fall. However, glancing forward to see the endless wave of creatures pouring out of the eye, I couldn’t help but feel my heart beat fast in fear. I realized at that point that it would only be a matter of time before we ran out of projectiles and these creatures pile up enough bodies to scale our wall.
Moments passed and the pile of anareas below us began to grow. More and more of them got on top of one another, forming the living ramp that we had been warned about. When I saw this rise higher to the point that the long arms of the creatures were able to scrape the edge of our rampart, I knew that things were about to get bloody.
Ordering my men to raise shields, those in the first ranks quickly withdrew their slings and lifted their scutum. Standing among the first rank, I watched anxiously as more and more sharp dagger-like tips of the araneas’ arms poked up from the edge of the rampart.
Soon enough the first creature to fully raise itself above the edge came into view and as it stabbed its hands towards me, I used my shield to block the blow, before using all my strength to shove my galdius forward. Aiming right for its chest, I was able to penetrate its thick skin and drive the tip of my blade deep into it. This was enough to defeat the creature, which quickly fell back, my gladius sliding out of it as it fell.
However, as it fell, another one rose, and I had to repeat the same process. All around me my century did the same, using their shields to protect themselves against the creature’s blows, while counter-attacking with the gladii.
Once in a while, I would hear the pained scream of one of my men and I would let out a curse of frustration, knowing that they were either killed or injured enough to be taken out from the line. But the fight continued, as the man behind him was trained to step forward and take his place.
As more and more araneas surged forward and tried to take out rampart, I noticed that the men in the first line were starting to slacken. Tired from the constant battle, I knew that they needed to rest. Because of this I called for the first line to retire and had the second line advance to take their place. With that done, the fresher members of the second line continued the fight, as I kept my place and fought with them.
However, I got too distracted with the fight in front of me that I nearly forgot to check the overall situation around us. It was only when a horn signal cracked in the air that I was alerted to what was happening in other parts of the battle.
This signal was one of many that was taught to us early on after our arrival here. It was a warning that the spica were on the field and raising forward. Immediately I became alert and warned my men to watch out for any spica jumping over the ramparts. The horn would have also alerted the archers to target the spica above all others, but I knew that this was not a guarantee that none would get through.
As I continued fighting the battle in front of me, worrying if a spica would emerge at any point, another horn signal blared. This time it made a cold chill run through my back. It was the alert that saxa were on the field.
Stabbing the aranea in front of me and using my shield to cover myself, I managed to glance towards the distance and see the large figures of huge saxa rushing out from the eye and heading towards our direction. From this quick observation, I estimate that they were as tall as a two-story building. These were the big ones.
Having little time to worry too much about this, I continued my fight against the araneas, as I prayed to Mars that the ballistae would be able to take them down.
While I was changing the front ranks for a fresher line, I heard a loud cheer coming from a ballista crew on top of a tower to our right. This gave me and my men a morale boost, as it meant that the crew had taken down a saxum.
However, that lift in morale did not last long, as I soon heard panicked cries to my left. The words would forever be ingrained in my mind.’
“Spica among the ranks! Spica among the ranks!”
The voice came from the centurion that held a portion of the ramparts to the left of my century. His shout was then followed by panicked and pained cries of legionnaires, as I can only imagine groups of spica ravaging their ranks, as they stabbed the exposed feet of the men there.
It was terrifying to hear their screams, but there was nothing I could do to help them. The only thing I could do was alert the men on the left flank of my century and tell them to keep an eye for any spica that might come our way.
As the battle raged on, with the hordes of creatures seemingly pouring out without cease, I began to notice that the humming from the eye began to lower. Lessening over time, it sounded as if the eye was getting tired and running out of energy. Eventually, the humming ceased, leaving us with the howls of the araneas, the stomping of the saxa, and the shouts of our men.
For a moment I was able to glance at the eye long enough to see that it no longer shone bright. Instead it had returned to its earlier state, with its skin black as the night once more. I also noticed that no more creatures were coming out of it.
However, any relief this might have brought me was quickly shattered when I heard the sound of flesh being crushed. I then looked forward to see the bodies of a dozen aranea get flung upward to the sky. This was then followed by an intense slamming sound and shake of the floor beneath me. We on the ramparts were barely able to keep our balance, as the wall we stood on was shaken by powerful slams.
Channeling all the bravery left in me, I dared to look over the edge of the rampart to find myself facing directly at a saxum. Standing there at the base of the wall, this giant, in its reckless pursuit against our wall, had trampled and flattened all the araneas that had been piled in front of us. Now its large eyes briefly stared at me, peering into my very soul, before its whole stone body lugged forward and slammed on the wall. Its impact forced me back and made me bump against the legionnaire behind me.
Regaining my balance, I ordered my men to use their slings and throw bullets at the giant’s eye. However, despite many shots hitting, they seemed to do little to stop the creature. Once more, it slammed against the wall and I could hear the sound of stone crumbling before us.
Fearing what might happen next, I was about to order my century to get down from the rampart, when the sound of something large dropping filled my ears. Waiting for a moment, and feeling no more impact against our rampart, I once more dared to look over the edge and saw that the saxum had collapsed. Studying it for a moment, I noticed a large crack on the creature's head, just between its eyes. Then, in the distance, I could hear cheering from one of the far away towers. Sighing in relief, I told myself that I owe the crew of that balista a round of drinks.
The battle was ending at that point, with sections of the wall finishing off the last clumps of araneas.
Exhausted from the fight, many of the men slumped along the ramparts, drained of both their energy and emotions. However, despite this, many of us stayed fully away that night, fearing that another attack may come or a few creatures that somehow remained alive may sneak up on us if we weren’t alert enough.
The fight ended up with light casualties for my century, but the century on my left fared far worse, with around half their numbers taken out by the spica. The rest of the defenders also suffered badly, with portions of the southern line nearly overrun. We were later told that it was one of the biggest attacks by the eye so far and the fight had been a close call.

Word has spread that an insane legionnaire has entered the eye. I did not witness it myself, but according to a fellow centurion who was on watch that day, a legionnaire had snuck out of the walls and began walking towards the Eye of Dis Pater. It didn’t take long for the watch posted on the walls to spot him, but no one dared to go down and stop him. Instead, they called out to him to stop and turn back. But he didn’t.
Instead, he walked up to the eye until he was a few steps away from its surface. Moving closer, he placed his hand on it and to the shock of many, it went through. Then, without hesitation, the legionnaire shoved his way forward and disappeared.
From what I gathered, the legionnaire was a veteran from one of the cohorts at the southern wall. Ever since the battle, it is said that he had been reclusive and had been talking to himself at night. Now, it is believed that he had gone fully insane and done something none of us would have dared to do.
It is said that the senior tribune was very shocked at the news, but was interested when informed that it was possible to go through to the eye during this seemingly dormant state it was in. A rider is rumored to have been quickly sent out after the senior tribune has been informed of the events.

Something strange happened this morning while I was on watch. It started off like a normal day on watch, with me checking the men and making sure that they were at their post and concentrated on their duty. However, as I finished my rounds and gazed towards the eye, I felt a strange sensation. Although I and many others have felt the sensation of the eye staring back at us, this one was different. It didn’t feel like it was just staring at me. No. It felt like it was talking to me.
It was in the wind. Its voice was talking in the wind. At first I couldn’t understand it, the voice was strange and the language foreign. However, as I listened, it started to become more and more clear.
Concentrating on it, I soon understood its words until it began telling me something.
“You are a fool to stay here, centurion. Run while you can. They will kill to keep the secret. They will end up killing you and your men.”
Then it ended. The winds once more became wind and I was left to wonder what I heard.
Was it really the eye that spoke? Or was it my exhausted mind making up things?

I had a dream of slaughter. Men dead, massacred. Blood was everywhere, the bodies piled into a massed grave, They were legionnaires and they were familiar to me. Staring at their faces, I saw the men of the cohort we had replaced. Every single one of them was now there, a look of shock plastered on their face.
I can’t get this dream out of my mind. No matter how many times I try to distract myself with duties, it keeps reappearing.

The fort is filled with excitement. A legate has recently arrived with a contingent of five cohorts. Rumors quickly spread among the men, as everyone wondered what this could possibly mean. Was the current garrison to be replaced? Was the fortification going to be extended?
None of us knew what the legate’s arrival meant, but later that night all centurions from all cohorts were gathered at the principia, where the legate was to hold a meeting.
At the meeting the legate told us that he was sent by the Emperor himself. He explained that the Emperor is thankful for our valiant defense of the fort against the evil creatures of Dis Pater. He then said that after the close battle that occurred last June, the Emperor wanted to find a permanent solution to stop the attacks. After learning that it was possible to enter the eye during its dormant state, the Emperor asked that an expedition should be sent to see what was on the other side and figure out if there was a permanent way to end the terror.
The legate said that this was his purpose here and he said that he will accomplish the Emperor’s order.

The legate ordered a scouting force to enter the Eye of Dis Pater, see what was on the other side, and report back to him. We thought this would not succeed, especially since the legionnaire that first entered it never came back. We Romans, however, were glad to learn that it would be a turma from the auxiliary cavalry that would be sent in.
We watched them enter and, once they were gone, gave no more thought about them. We were all convinced that they would be consumed by the eye and were as good as dead.
However, later in the day, we were surprised to see them ride out of the eye. I was on watch when that occurred and, although there were ten less riders, the fact was they had returned. They immediately reported to the legate, who is said to be pleased by the reports he was given.

Another scouting force was sent into the eye today. This time it would be three turmae of auxiliary cavalry. The force ended up being gone for most of the day, but emerged out of the eye as night began to fall. They suffered heavy casualties and many of them were badly injured.

We had just come back from a meeting with the legate. He plans for us to enter the Eye of Dis Pater tomorrow. According to him, the previous scouting mission has found the river of life for the eye and cutting it off would kill the eye and finally end its reign of terror.
I don’t really understand what that means or how we are going to cut off this river of life, but I am afraid of tomorrow. No campaign before this has frightened me the way this one is. After seeing what creatures came out of the eye and after seeing how many casualties all the scouting missions entering it had suffered, I knew that such an expedition into the eye would be bloody.
Rumors from the auxiliary cavalry also say that there are more creatures on the other side.
The legate plans to send seven cohorts of infantry, one ala of auxiliary cavalry, and one cohort of auxiliary archers on the expedition, all to be under his command. Two cohorts of infantry and one cohort of auxiliary archers are to be left behind to defend the fort, under the command of the senior tribune.
Sadly, for us, one of the infantry cohorts tasked to join the expedition is ours.
May Mars give us the strength to accomplish our task and may Jupiter light our way home.

The archeological site in central France is a curious one, as it seems to be a large fortification built in central France during the Principate-era of the Roman Empire. Archeologists and researchers alike are baffled why a fort of such size would be built in an area that was known to be peaceful at the time of its construction.
The fort itself has a strange layout, something uncommon for Roman forts at the time. Four walls surrounded an open empty field that had a lake at the large pond at the center. On the southern wall, a large castra stood, while smaller castellum on the north, eastern, and western portions of the wall. Such a format reminded us in the team of a wall of circumvallation, although none of us could find out what the Romans were trying to surround here. Survey of the central field reveals no signs of a settlement, but pieces of cast lead sling bullets, stones believed to have been fired from ballistae, arrow and pilum tips have been found.
Further surveys of the surrounding forest area were conducted in hopes of finding more archaeological evidence to help answer the question. This proved fruitful, as it resulted in a new discovery. However, instead of answers, it only opened up more questions.
This new discovery turned out to be a mass grave for fallen Roman legionnaires. From the skeletal remains recovered, it was noted that they were killed after being attacked with gladii and pila, leaving some speculate that they were killed by fellow Romans. Other objects recovered were various pieces of armor, weaponry, and dozens of vexilla. These vexilla have markings indicating that they belong to legionary detachments that had served at the fort. A leading theory at the moment is that these legionnaires were ordered to death by the superiors in charge of the fort in order to keep the secrets there contained. This theory, however, still lacks sufficient proof and needs further evidence and study.
These documents I translated were found inside in a leather satchel hidden under the floorboards of a room which archeologists believe were officer’s quarters at the northern castellum. Sadly, the other documents with it seem to have deteriorated to the point that they are unreadable. However, it seems like the document dated 29th of August is the last one this centurion wrote, with it being the last one in the group of papers.
The validity of the centurions account is currently being questioned by me and my research team, as his words describe the impossible. All of us knew that it was impossible to use his words as proof that unworldly creatures exist.
However, I have to admit that this place does have an aura of something strange towards it. Sometimes, when I wander near the pond, I can't help but stare and become fixated at it. As I do, I can’t help but feel the wind try to talk to me, as if trying to find the right words to say.
Yesterday, I felt like it did, because I swear I heard the wind whisper:
“I will be back.”

2023.03.21 09:53 KawaiiQuilava89 GBC IPS V3 will not enter function menu

Hey Guys,
I am relatively new to modding, I've done about 7 consoles (All GBC, GBA, or SPs), and this is the first real issue I've come across. My GBC Mod I did tonight works fine, but when I put everything together, it was having trouble entering the function menu to change the alignment/Logo color. I got it to work, pressing hard, and I was able to cycle the color forward two to Blue, but now it won't work at all. It wont even enter color mode.
Things I have tried:
The logo is permanently stuck on blue and I can't figure out why. I was worried maybe I fried the ribbon cable (even though it doesn't really look like I did), but the other functions are working, meaning the power and touch sensor.
It's worth noting that the Start/Select buttons still do work in any game, and the touch sensor will still change the brightness, I just can't change the alignment or the color of the Logo.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

2023.03.21 09:05 Rpt_my_brain Some thought about AI. Stop fighting against AI can help to ensure an AI Balanced Future

Hi how is everyone doing?
So, you might have heard about the recent controversy involving artists and AI-based services like Midjourney. It seems like there's a growing concern about AI development as a whole, and it's causing some people to get pretty anxious.
I want to make one thing clear upfront: fighting against AI is not only harmful to society, but it can also be pretty dangerous. And that's a big statement, but hear me out.
In the next 10 years or so, we're not looking at AI replacing humans. Instead, it's people who use AI getting ahead of those who don't. The real long-term concern isn't AI controlling us all; it's a few "bad apples" controlling too much AI and computational power. I mean, sure, there will be some malicious AI, but as long as it's a small portion, the world will stay organized.
The real risk is one country, company, or person getting control of way too much computational power. If that happens, it's easy for them to grab even more resources and eventually monopolize everything. So let's forget those outdated sci-fi movies and think about society as a whole instead.
Right now, we're at a crossroads. On one side, we have a bright future where AI power is shared relatively equally. Everyone gets equal access to AI tools, and AI's productivity helps reinforce human rights and equality. Sounds like a utopia, right? On the other hand, we could end up with one person controlling too much power, becoming the permanent ruler of the world, and the rest of us getting, well, screwed.
Staying where we are isn't an option. AI's going to be a big part of our future whether we like it or not. But we do have a choice in which path we take. As regular folks, we need to make sure AI power is open to the public and not monopolized by a few individuals. That means supporting open-source AI models, affordable AI services for all countries and regions, uncensored versions of gpt(or other models). and rooting the idea of "equal AI access" in our kids' minds. In the future, access to AI will mean freedom.
Fighting against AI is harmful. Why? Well, you can shut down Midjourney, Chat-GPT, or any other AI service, but the tech will still exist. Instead, big companies and rich folks will just build their own AI models to serve themselves, and the public will lose out. (And if you think that'll lead to less data, I disagree. With private models, they can learn from any resource without permission.)
I wouldn't be surprised if people like Elon Musk are already building their own uncensored AI while the rest of us argue about gpt’ censorship and other issues. The more open and accessible AI tools are to the public, the better off we'll all be. Fighting AI tools like Midjourney might slow things down, but you can't stop progress. And remember, if you try to fight against it, you're just making it easier for a few individuals to keep AI tech away from the rest of us.
So what's our goal? Freedom? Equality? AI is the key to all of that. We're standing at a crossroads, and we have just one chance to choose our path. Let's make it count!

(Thank you chat gpt for fixing and polishing my sentences)

Is Jesus a Messenger or Son of God?
[Ms. Thrylokya asked: Paadanamaskaram Swami. I have found several videos on a discussion between Christianity and Islam regarding the point that whether Jesus is a messenger or the son of God. Please give me a clear picture on this topic.]
Swami replied: First of all, you must understand the basic concept in Christianity, which is the Divine Trinity. God, Holy Spirit and Son of God constitute the Trinity. You must clearly know the details of each item of this Trinity.
God:- God is beyond space because God is the generator of space. Space cannot exist in God before space is generated. If space exists in God before its generation, it means that space is not generated from God because already space is existing in God before its generation. You don’t see the pot (shape of the pot) in its cause, which is the lump of mud before the pot is generated. This means that God has no spatial dimensions. It means that God has no volume. Any item, not having volume can never be imagined even if you break your head for millions of births. This concludes that God is unimaginable. This God gives the proof of His existence through unimaginable events called miracles. Genuine miracles exist in this world apart from magic, which appears as a genuine miracle, but on analysis it can be easily found out that this magic is a false miracle.
Due to the existence of magic, you shall not conclude that all miracles are magic only. Atheists blindly become rigid in negating even the genuine miracles also as false magic. Therefore, unimaginable God exists because of the existence of genuine miracles in this world. The source of all these genuine miracles is the unimaginable God.
Holy Spirit:- Spirit means energy i.e., quite different from the clearly visible matter. Awareness is also spirit because it is a specific work form of inert energy i.e., generated in the functioning brain-nervous system. Soul is the awareness and is considered to be the meaning of the word ‘spirit’. Hence, all forms of energy can be treated as spirit and especially the invisible form of energy or awareness is treated as spirit.
The above explained God shall not be thought as awareness because God also knows and thinks. But, the unimaginable God need not be awareness to think or know as per the worldly logic about awareness. The unimaginable God is omnipotent and due to the omnipotence, the unimaginable God can be omniscient and omnipresent. This means that even though the unimaginable God is not present anywhere in this world, God can be effectively omnipresent and omniscient. We can understand this with a small limited example.
A king knows the information from every place of his kingdom with the help of his secret CID system even though he is not present physically anywhere. The omnipotent God knows everything of the creation without physically present anywhere and in His case, the CID system is not necessary due to His omnipotence. Without being present anywhere in creation (because He is beyond space or world), He is aware of everything and He is capable of controlling anything due to His omnipotence. Even though He is unimaginable, He can possess great attributes through His omnipotence and for this, the best example is that He has the attributes of knowledge and thinking even though He is not awareness. In this way, you need not be worried with the fight between one party saying that God is attributeless and another party saying that God is with attributes.
Such unimaginable God thought of creating the creation and such thinking was done before creation. Hence, in the time of such thinking there is neither inert energy nor a materialized nervous system. The inert energy functioning in the nervous system produces awareness. The inert energy is obtained from the digestion of food. Such awareness alone can think. But God thought to create this creation and, in that time, there was neither matter nor energy to produce awareness. Therefore, God thought not due to awareness but thought due to omnipotence. Such unimaginable God wanted to express Himself to energetic beings (having energetic souls and energetic bodies) present in the upper worlds to be created in future.
Hence, He created the first energetic body and some space in which the energetic body could be accommodated. Then, the unimaginable God merged with this energetic body making it as His permanent residential address. This body and that little space are never destroyed even if the entire creation-space disappears. This is the first energetic incarnation that can be seen only by the energetic beings living in the upper energetic worlds. Neither those worlds, nor those energetic beings can be seen by human beings unless God wishes. Hence, this energetic body and soul is not visible to human beings and therefore, we can conveniently call this energetic incarnation as spirit. Thus, the first energetic incarnation is named as Holy Spirit, which is the relevant incarnation of God for the upper unseen energetic worlds containing unseen energetic beings.
This means that the unmediated unimaginable God is mediated with energetic body. Mediation of an unmediated item is called as incarnation. The mediated item is not at all affected by the medium and hence, Holy spirit is nothing but the unimaginable God mediated in an energetic medium. The energetic medium may have form or may not have form. If it has form, such incarnation is called as Father of Heaven in Christianity and God Datta in Hinduism. In Islam, such unimaginable God is called as Allah. Some divine devotees experienced Allah as formless light and this means that the same first energetic incarnation (Holy Spirit) is mediated by light energy without form. In Hinduism also such situation is mentioned in the Veda where God appears as formless spirit (God mediated in formless energy), called ‘Yaksham.’ The same God mediated in energetic form is called ‘Father of Heaven’ or ‘God Datta’ in Hinduism.
If Islam says that Allah is formless, we have to take unimaginable God as Allah. If Islam considers the appearance of Allah as bright light energy, it is the formless first energetic incarnation or Holy Spirit. It is very important to note that the original unimaginable God is not at all different from the first energetic incarnation. In fact, the first energetic incarnation (Datta or Father of Heaven) created all this creation, maintains it and finally withdraws it from gross state to subtle state so that after some interval, the same subtle creation is manifested into gross creation just like the same film reel is projected as the next film show. Remember that this first energetic incarnation merged with some more selected energetic beings to become other energetic incarnations.
Son of God:- In the creation, along with the upper unseen energetic worlds in which unseen energetic beings live, the earth is also created along with seen humanity on it. The media of human souls on the earth are bodies made of matter and some inert energy. The soul made of awareness (awareness is also a form of inert energy only) is the common item between an energetic being and a human being. The difference is only the external gross body, which is made of inert energy in the case of energetic beings and is made of matter and some inert energy in the case of human beings. Just like energetic incarnations are relevant to the upper energetic worlds, the human incarnations are relevant to this earth.
The first energetic incarnation merges with selected human devoted beings to form various human incarnations. The first energetic incarnation merges with both soul and body withdrawing itself from the body and confining to the soul only whenever it is necessary. Generally, God withdraws Himself from the body so that the body remains with its natural properties so that fellow human beings can mix with Him freely to clarify their doubts in spiritual knowledge. The main aim of the incarnation of God (unimaginable God) is to clarify the doubts of devotees in spiritual knowledge.
Now the question is that whether God Himself directly comes down as incarnation to clarify the doubts of devotees or God sends some messenger to clarify the doubts of devotees. On this point, the answer from the Gita is that only God comes down in a relevant form to preach true spiritual knowledge and clarify the doubts. No other soul has that capacity to preach true spiritual knowledge and to clarify any doubt except the ultimate original God. The unimaginable God is not only beyond imagination but is also invisible and hence, such God takes a relevant form as medium and comes down for this purpose and such form is called incarnation. There is no difference between the unimaginable God and His visible incarnation.
A naked person in the bathroom came out wearing some dress and there is no trace of difference or any type of modification between the original God (naked) and His incarnation (same naked person but clothed). Unmediated-unimaginable God (Nirguna Brahman) cannot be caught by the mind-eye just like an unclothed naked person cannot be caught by the eye. The same God becomes clothed (Saguna Brahman) can be seen by the souls and the medium (cloth) may be energetic (silk cloth) or may be human (cotton cloth). These two are only different states of the same item and the state cannot bring even a trace of difference in the item. In this way, one should realize that the goal in every religion is the same one item called God.
When God wants to do some work on the earth, He can send some close soul to earth in order to accomplish such work or may come down if the work is very complicated, which can be done by God alone. All the works can be done by the servant souls with the strength of God’s grace. But, one work can’t be done by souls and that is the propagation of spiritual knowledge and clarification of doubts in spiritual knowledge. The knowledge preached by God can be brought down to the earth letter by letter. But, if a critical doubt is posed by a devotee, sometimes, the messenger can’t clarify that doubt so effectively as done by God. Hence, the Gita says that whenever preaching true spiritual knowledge comes as the main program, God Himself will descend down (Jñānī tvātmaiva me matam). A servant is that soul coming down to earth to do any type of work except propagating true spiritual knowledge and clarification of any doubt posed by any soul.
This exceptional work can be done only by the God in the form of Human Incarnation on the earth. If you confine the word ‘messenger’ to the soul that brings down the message of God as it is, the word messenger can apply even to a close soul of God. But, the work is not strictly limited to just pass on the message as it is. The work is further extended in all angles when doubts are shot by the receivers of knowledge. If the messenger gives a wrong answer, it cannot be rectified later on since the omniscience of God is tarnished. Hence, the answer should always come perfect in the very first instance itself so that the omniscience of God is undisturbed at any time.
Therefore, whenever you use the word messenger in the sense of carrying on the spiritual knowledge to the world along with perfect clarifications of various doubts asked by devotees, there is no second person other than God and like this, God alone is the messenger and messenger alone is God. Some simple works like killing a demon etc., can be done by another devoted soul to God in which such danger does not exist. This does not mean that every messenger is God because even some human souls try to become messengers of spiritual knowledge. It only means that God alone becomes the messenger of true spiritual knowledge.
Since the propagation of true spiritual knowledge along with clarification of every doubt in spiritual knowledge is the main program of the incarnation, every incarnation is a messenger. Therefore, there is no fourth category called messenger except the above explained trinity in which God exists in all the three states. Krishna, Buddha, Jesus, Mohammad, Mahavir Jain, Gurunanak etc., are the messengers, Who mean the Incarnations of God. There is no difference between God, Holy Spirit and Son of God because the same unimaginable God mediated in energetic medium is the Holy spirit and the same unimaginable God mediated in materialized medium is the Son of God. There is no difference between Holy Spirit and Son of God.
In the context of such clear background, why did messenger Mohammad (Mohammad is the Human Incarnation of God, called as ‘Son of God’ and every messenger is Son of God or God Himself in mediated condition. Son means that the medium is created by God. From the point of the medium, the messenger is called as Son of man and from the point of God, the messenger is called as Son of God) rejected the concept of Human Incarnation? His precedent messenger was Jesus, Who was horribly crucified by the public of that specific region. Mohammad wanted to prevent the humanity from this greatest sin and hence, rejected the concept of Human Incarnation God even though He Himself was the Human Incarnation. His generous heart shall be realized in this great sacrifice of His own fame to protect humanity from such a greatest sin. If Muslims and Christians understand this true background, they can be united and both can be united with Hinduism also.
By union, individuality need not be lost. There are several states in India like UP, Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu etc. Every human being belongs to its individual state while simultaneously belongs to the entire nation called India. Similarly, every religion retains its own religious individuality and simultaneously becomes a member of Universal Religion or Spirituality. The main concept of Universal Spirituality is that one shall follow his/her own religion and shall not criticize other religions. Buddhism also comes under Universal Religion because the silence of Buddha about God means that He is expressing God as unimaginable, Who can be best represented by silence. The silence of Buddha on God is misunderstood by His followers as negation of God.
The differences among religions have come due to differences among the followers of religions due to their little knowledge. The founders of all religions are various forms of the single God alone representing the basic unity of all religions. The basis of every religion is God, heaven and hell since these three exist in every religion. Heaven and hell establish the merit of justice and the defect of sin or injustice in worldly life (Pravrutti). Heaven encourages merits of justice and hell discourages sins of injustice. God is the founder for Pravrutti and also Nivrutti (spiritual life). The fundamental essence of every religion is one and the same and the difference is only in the external culture and the language of scripture. The founders (single God in different forms) of all religions introduced merits and some ignorant followers introduced defects into all religions.
Change of religion is meaningless because of the existence of merits and defects in every religion. If you are criticizing the form of God of another religion, you are criticizing the form of God of your own religion because God is the common actor in both the form-roles. Each scripture is written by the same God suiting to the culture of a set of people of a specific region, which brings the superficial difference because the fundamentals of scriptures of all religions is one and the same. If you are criticizing the scripture of any religion, you are criticizing your own scripture because the same God wrote both the scriptures.
The main defect of almost all human beings is ego-based jealousy towards co-human beings. When God comes down in a co-human form, naturally, the ego-based jealousy of the human beings becomes very powerful and as a result, the Human Incarnation of God is always repelled by general humanity. If the current goes in your house, you will not mind about it if the current also was absent in your neighbour’s house. This means that you cannot tolerate the greatness of your co-human being. In that case, you may question that why God did not come down in a super-human form so that the ego-based jealousy will not come out? The answer for this is that God wants to mix with all human beings in a free way so that there is no excitation in any human being disturbing its ground state of mental balance so that doubts can be freely asked.
For this purpose, God is confined to the soul of the incarnation only so that the body is not divinized exhibiting natural properties of human nature encouraging co-human beings to mix freely with incarnation. If greatness is not exhibited, free mixing with human beings is the merit and negligence from co-human beings is the defect. If greatness is exhibited, repulsion due to ego-based jealousy is the defect and attraction to His divine personality is the merit.
The Human Incarnation has to maintain a very critical balance in its behaviour towards co-human devotees. The Incarnation also behaves like a true devotee so that such behaviour becomes the practical example for other devotees to be followed. By this, the co-devotees treat the Incarnation as a devotee and not as God. Another complicated point is that the same Incarnation behaves in various levels as per the level of the devotees. If the devotees feel that the Incarnation is only a human being, the Incarnation behaves like a messenger sent by God so that the ego-based jealousy of the co-devotees is pacified (lowest level of devotion). If the devotees feel that the Incarnation is greater than themselves, but, not the greatest God, God behaves like the Son of God, Who is greater than the devotees, but, lesser than the Father-God (middle level of devotion).
The devotees, who have conquered their ego-based jealousy and recognize the Incarnation as God, Who came down to preach the true spiritual knowledge, the Incarnation behaves like God Himself (highest level of devotion). These three steps are that of Messenger, Son of God and God respectively. I am in the light (pure dualism with God), the light is in Me (intermediate state) and I am the light (pure monism with God) are the three steps in which the Incarnation moves based on the level of surrounding receivers of knowledge. All these three steps were revealed by Jesus and the second and third states could not be tolerated by the surrounding devotees resulting in the cruel crucifixion of Jesus. Prophet Mohammad revealed Himself in the first state (Messenger) only, which is the safest step avoiding effects of ego-based jealousy like crucifixion and He propagated this step only for the safety of any Human Incarnation that comes to preach true spiritual knowledge in this world. This shows the practical intelligence and efficient administration of God in the form of Mohammad

This shows the practical intelligence and efficient administration of God in the form of Mohammad.

Is Jesus a Messenger or Son of God?

[Ms. Thrylokya asked: Paadanamaskaram Swami. I have found several videos on a discussion between Christianity and Islam regardinIs Jesus a Messenger or Son of God?g the point that whether Jesus is a messenger or the son of God.

This shows the practical intelligence and efficient administration of God in the form of Mohamma

This shows the practical intelligence and efficient administration of God in the form of Mohamma

2023.03.21 07:30 unityofreligions Is Jesus a Messenger or Son of God?

Is Jesus a Messenger or Son of God?

[Ms. Thrylokya asked: Paadanamaskaram Swami. I have found several videos on a discussion between Christianity and Islam regardinIs Jesus a Messenger or Son of God?g the point that whether Jesus is a messenger or the son of God.

Due to the existence of magic, you shall not conclude that all miracles are magic only. Atheists blindly become rigid in negating even the genuine miracles also as false magic.
Without being present anywhere in creation (because He is beyond space or world), He is aware of everything and He is capable of controlling anything due to His omnipotence. In this way, you need not be worried with the fight between one party saying that God is attributeless and another party saying that God is with attributes.
Such unimaginable God thought of creating the creation and such thinking was done before creation. Hence, in the time of such thinking there is neither inert energy nor a materialized nervous system.
This shows the practical intelligence and efficient administration of God in the form of Mohammad.

Is Jesus a Messenger or Son of God?
[Ms. Thrylokya asked: Paadanamaskaram Swami.
