Welp, just lost my take homes (hopefully just temporarily). I've been at the clinic almost ten years now. I stabilized, stayed at that dose for a few years, then starting tapering very slowly. I'm now at 9 mg, feel fine. I've had weekly take homes for years. I've been clean the entire time since I stabilized, so about 9 years. My sobriety and my children are the 2 things I'm proudest of. So today I go in for my weekly pickup, have to see the director. I'm told I failed my screen, positive for opiates (he said not fentanyl, though). He asked me questions, have I had any new meds, eaten anything different, let anyone give me a pill. I take only my own Rx's as prescribed (wellbutrin, zoloft, methadone), and my vitamins (multi, magnesium and b12 daily). For headaches I'll take 1 Tylenol 500 mg or 2 ibuprofen 200 mg, but I do so sparingly. I won't even take cough medicine, Sudafed, etc for fear of false positives, and I am prescribed hydroxizine for anxiety, but I don't take it because it makes me too tired. Nothing new to eat, but I have been having different teas lately from a sampler; lemon ginger, orange tea, etc. I'm so mad because I have done everything right, and I know they don't believe me. I've been going through a lot, and my fiance (also at clinic) has been using and in the hospital, so they know I've been stressed. They're retesting the sample. I'm concerned about contamination. After we pee in the cup and put on lid, we reach through the metal slot and throw it into a huge garbage bag with all the other samples. If someone doesn't put their lid on correctly & it would just splash everywhere in the bag (ew) or pee on the cup (ew) just all over. I know it couldn't get into my cup if the lid is sealed, but if it gets on it could it potentially be contaminated from the tech touching it and handling my sample? Hopefully it's just a flawed test/false positive and I don't have to fight this. I asked to do a hair sample but director just kind of laughed, so I guess they don't do that. Sorry so long y'all, just had to get it out to the only people who understand! Have a good day everyone!

And I tend to agree with them. After a long day of work, what they don't want is to be super focused all the time and just wind down. They can't finish lost sectors so can't get new builds, and even on Hero its difficult because they don't have access to most builds. They say they are running into a brick wall, and don't want to play vanguard over and over so they are quitting. Feels bad man

Bought some cheap joints at the dispensary the other day. Smoked them back to back nights. Honestly, it wasn’t great. It wasn’t great at all. I was expecting a wave of dopamine washing over me and didn’t get that. It just wasn’t as charming as I pictured it at all. It was so anti-climactic smoking it after weeks of refraining and craving just to feel paranoid and light munchies.
So I’m destroying the rest of the material right now with the trusty toilet. Don’t feel very discouraged at the moment because the progress is set back but not lost. Smoking twice in 45 days is a lot better than how I would before quitting which would be 45 times in 45 days.
Im going to reset my day counters just for records, but will keep in mind quitting after a tiny lapse is so much better than after a full binge. I move forward knowing that going back doesn’t feel good being high anymore. It just isn’t what I remember it to be. Perhaps I have grown out of it? I still have the addiction lingering but the actual fun aspect of it feels like it has departed from me. Maybe that’s a good thing for my quitting journey.

I have a rare disorder. Every man I come across talks nicely in the beginning of the relationship. I talk to guys online because people irl do not approach me, I guess it is because of my condition (marfan syndrome). Recently, I started talking to a guy and he was okay to meet me even after knowing my condition. We started as friends and then things escalated quickly. We did a couple of video calls and voice calls. He was ready to meet me not for a hookup but for a causal meet.
This man was nice until a week ago. Now, he takes days or hours to respond to my texts. I understood today that he lost interest in me or needs a side chick. I am not into it and I decided to protect my heart so uninstalled the app today.
One main reason why I pay attention to these men's behavior is because my own family almost disowned me. This is why I try to make friends online. I feel no one wants to stick around me. What breaks my heart is that no one considered me important. I mean am I that ugly or worthless?
Most importantly, I am financially independent and do things on my own; I am not a needy individual who needs support in many ways.

so first let me start this by saying I'm not mad just telling a story. today me and my siblings were walking our neighborhood trail. we usually go to the left but it's boring its only got a golf course. I usually want to see more. but my nay saying brother say's it's too far and my sister listens. we've grown up sheltered I'm 18 he's 17 and my sister 20. anyways my brother went to look for golf balls to collect to get money. and he was told by us to not to go to that brook, its got water and big branches and rocks. but he didn't listen and went in and collected golf balls, and we followed him. keep in mind this hood is overrated sorta plain. don't let me fool you its overrated and I'm hyping it . so after he went and did what he wanted and since it was dangerous, I thought well if he can do that let me ask can we go to the new trail on the other side of the neighborhood. I did insist to my sister to go even though she was hesitant. but I felt she just didn't want to go because I wanted too and to always make my plans bad. because she told our brother not to go into that ditch with sharp rocks and pointy branches and he didn't listen. and she didn't stop him or anything but helped him. so after I insisted I got my way. me and my siblings started walking it was fun at first we saw a school and a whole other neighborhood. but then my brother lost his gloves so we had to go back. then we realized we were lost I mean I was confused we took so many turns, and it all looked the same. me and my bro only remembered so many landmarks. but we were still not sure anyways we were all getting stressed. and my sister first thing blames me and throws me under the bus, saying and destiny wanted to go here. and I thought to myself yes I wanted to go here and insisted but you agreed. you said yes we could walk the trail the trail was long and it didn't matter how long you said we could. so the first sign of trouble you blame me. so I said you're a grown women you chose to come. then she was said your a grown women too. and I'm like yeah but I'm not blaming anyone. than we walked than I heard her say and she told us to go here and my brother was like yeah blaming me. so I said check your phone for the GPS. she said I don't know where we are. Okay, so the space bacon has increased. I think Mom is trying to cheer me up. I mean, it's not not working. I won't say no to delicious, delicious space bacon. What I want is some goddamn whiskey. I wish I knew more about chemistry, the only fucking reason I even know there's caffeine in the tea is because I recognized its effect on me. If knew how to draw the molecules of hooch, maybe I could help my family figure this shit out.
Pretty sure the lack of xenos coco beans leaves me SOL on the chocolate front.

In other news, the hands and Lucy are moving ahead with me merch. Is a five percent cut fair? I mean, it's my likeness and shit, but it's not like I'm doing any work. Then again, it would be funny if they caught on, so I'll definitely help promote that shit.
As Master at Arms, the state of the armory is my responsibility, and I have to say, it's pretty pathetic. These plasma casters wouldn't penetrate a standard boarding power armor's battle screens, let alone dent its heat dispersal systems. Speaking of armor, we have fuck all. The vac suits are even fucking soft sided. Leaving alone the fact that you want to tank your atmo during a fight to avoid the possibility of explosive venting, so fighting in vac suits is fucking standard, what if you have to go a spacewalkin' to repair something and get hit by debris? You're fucked in this soft sided shit.
Automatic naval shotguns aren't really an option, and there isn't really anything available that I would call equivalent. I can get some magac factettes to add a little kinetic to our arsenal, but they're semiauto and vulnerable to EMP strikes. Finding anything that's chemical propellant at all is proving to be extremely frustrating. I really don't like having that gaping hole in our defenses.
Speaking of holes, the armor. I brought it up with Pops, and he admitted that he's always ignored armor because he's always been uninterested in sailing anywhere remotely dangerous. Well the wide sea is all about you, you can fence yourself in, but you cannot fence it out. I felt kinda bad for being critical of his armory, but my job is to make sure the We Sing can defend herself, and now we're planning on going to space Tortuga.
We're going over to that Justiciar to request some combat vac armor. I want the bridge crew and a shipboard response team capable of acting even in the event of losing atmo.
Time to start drilling the kiddos for lockdowns. Maybe I can disguise it as a game. Speaking of the kiddos, I had a decent chat with Sarge. He gets why I was so harsh with him, and apologized for not thinking more clearly. Kid has a good heart, and will be a good leader one day. One day, but not today Sarge. We're getting ready to set sail.
Which is a bit more complicated since all twelve of the stops we plan on making are completely different markets than Mom's used to. She's been sinking her teeth into the social medias of the destinations though, and is slowly filling our hold with the few local products that will be in demand there.

Such as how he wound up in that kennel, and what happened to him in the fighting pit. I mean, we had the police reports, but that's just what some cops thought about what they saw and some recordings of the fights taken from the poachers' databanks.

Gregory had some criticisms of the armory. I knew he would, but it is still discordant to listen to him talk about combat effectiveness of various weapons. It's the dissonance between how lethal and how cute he is.
Apparently, his people believe in redundancies in weapons systems, such that they still use chemical propellant weapons. This means they either have electromagnetic pulse weapons, or are extraordinarily paranoid.
In any case, he's spent most of the day putting together a requisition for some more weapons, and wants to see about getting some armor from the Justiciar. Well, that might be an interesting encounter to watch, so I've reached out to her to see if anybody is willing to meet us over the issue. The Lord Justiciar himself wants to have tea. Oh, this is going to be funny.
He said that he owed us some more answers, and asked Trevdi to gather who she thinks can hear the story, and settled into a chair to tell the story.
"Well, this bit is... it is what it is. You've heard me mention Sanctuary before, and all of you have very politely avoided questioning me over it. But I'll explain anyway. Sanctuary is one of two rest and recreation planets, the Army one is called Respite. Anyway, Sanctuary is set aside, it has a low tech level, very little dangerous fauna, a nice, temperate to tropical climate, and low population. Importantly, it has no spaceport, or station, and the only way onto the planet is supposed to be to ride a shuttle down from a Navy ship. This is to keep the planet low-stress but activity dense to help us relax and recharge for redeployment. In my case, I was ordered there for mental health treatment.

I’m based in London, UK and I have recently left what was my current position after my recruiter had said I had secured this new job. Great. I luckily did not need to hand in my notice, but gave them a few days notice anyway out of respect. Week later, the same recruiter who had been hyping this job up for me said I got to do another stage (interview) with the finance manager. He said he’d get back to me today or tomorrow regarding dates, but have still heard nothing. I have been left in the dark.
I feel like I have just been raped and tossed aside…honestly I feel like I’ve been made to be treated like nothing. Worthless. Now, I feel totally demoralised and humiliated because I had told my family and friends about this incredible job opportunity.
I cannot believe they are allowed to do that in this day and age. There are no principles with recruiters. They are the bane for job-seekers and from this day on I will feel no remorse if I ever have to let them down. That is, if i even contact any again. In fact, I will see what opportunities they have going and then once they send out the company and job description I will apply directly and inform the recruiter I’m not interested. They should not be making money out of our lying and our misery.

I've been digging in to the history of the draft for the last few weeks, for fun, and I've come across really really interesting draft picks over the years! If people still keep reading, I want to make one of these a day, each day, until the draft. This is day number 5, so it's time to mock the...
Carolina Panthers
OK, once again, it’s harder to write these for newer teams that have had fewer high-value picks. You should— totally—- ignore my flair, this team is better at drafting than you might think. Either that or they’ve been good about drafting “unsexy” trench position players with those high picks. Jordan Gross, Blake Brockermeyer, and Jeff Otah were all first round picks for the team. One of them washed out in 28 games, one was a Pro Bowler, and one made the all-rookie team. Which one is which? Trench positions are boring. Like Charlotte. And the Panthers. And Reich. And Jake Delhomme. Can we ask for anything but mediocrity?
Speaking of mediocre, most people on this sub know this story, but the rise and fall of one Mr. Jimmy Clausen was pretty spectacular!
Early Life
Clausen was practically born to be a Notre Dame quarterback. Legendary for both his work-ethic and swagger in high school, always training in Fighting Irish shorts, his brother got their friend Matt Cassel to break down tape of Brady Quinn when Clausen was in high school. That’s who Clausen modeled his game after (forebodingly), and he was trying to get into the head of Charlie Weiss from before the time he could drive.
Clausen, the USA Today Player of the Year, turned down Nick Saban and Alabama so he could go to South Bend. And he showed off his trademark swag as he did it– he made his committing announcement at the College Football Hall of Fame, wearing his high school state title rings.
College
Almost immediately after enrolling, Clausen got in legal trouble for alcohol stuff. His first game was a 33-3 loss at home to Georgia Tech. In Clausen’s first season, they went 3-9, their worst record since 1963. But the shine was still there– he was the 8th Notre Dame freshman quarterback in more than half a century. People were enamored with his quick release and footwork, even as he threw 7 touchdowns to 6 picks, rotating starts with Demetrius Jones.
But then things started to turn! His sophomore campaign was more than 3,000 yards and he balled out in his bowl game (against Hawaii). And we enter his junior season.
The team started 6-2 with Clausen being named a midseason All-American. Then they lost a rivalry game to navy by 2. And a rivalry game against Pitt by 2. After losing to UConn in double-overtime, he was punched in the face by an irate Fighting Irish fan while leaving a bar that night. Another rivalry game loss to Stanford, and that’s all she wrote.
The Draft
Weiss was informed he’d be fired and told Jimmy, “hey, get out, you’ve done all you can here,” so he did. Even if the team went 6-6 and skipped their bowl game, Jimmy got 3,722 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 4 picks. People now raved about his quick release and his accuracy, his top-tier coaching, and his understanding of a pro offense. His clear improvement every year meant untold potential. He jumped into the draft, and Mel Kiper declared Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen to be 1a and 1b for the first overall pick.
Then he couldn’t do drills in the combine because of a bad toe. Then his swagger, even after Weiss got fired, rubbed people the wrong way. Then this, then that. Do we want to give control of our future to a kid who went 16-21 at Notre Dame? Rumors about a potential draft-day slide started.
Kiper doubled down, pegged Clausen into the 4th spot on the draft board (behind Bradford, Suh, and McCoy) and vowed that if Clausen wasn’t an elite NFL quarterback in 8 years (by 2018) that he’d retire. Irish fans talked about a brash young gunslinger who was always surrounded by mediocrity and added years to Weiss’s career. Talking heads puzzled if we were that sure that Bradford was actually that much better than Clausen.
Schefter quietly disagreed and mocked Clausen 30th to the Vikings. WalterFootball quietly mocked Clausen 30th to the Vikings. Peter Schrager at Fox Sports sent him to the Cardinals at 26th.
The draft began, and I supposed the slide “began” when Trent Williams was taken by the Washington team 4th. It was in full-effect by 20th. Everyone waits as the Broncos trade up to the 25th spot and select… Tim Tebow? Really? Over the pro-ready Clausen? He was mocked to the Browns at 38 by FOX and the Bills at 41 by Walter Football. And the Cards take a DT and the Vikings trade out of the round. And then the first round ends and Clausen is still chilling.
Clausen takes a catastrophic slide to 48th, even as Kiper declares him the 4th best prospect. To Carolina, which is only two years out of being a playoff team, where he can compete immediately. All’s well that ends well!
The Pros
Clausen put together one of the worst quarterback campaigns seen in modern times. They went 1-9 as a team as he posted 3 touchdowns to 9 picks, and a QBR of 13. They passed for fewer than 120 yards per game as he started. And the next year, they drafted his replacement, Cam Newton. They even brought Derek Anderson in to push him to third string and he never took a snap for the Panthers again.
He magically reappeared in 2014 in Chicago (he connected with Trestman when Trestman ran his Pro Day at Notre Dame) and briefly won the starting job over Jay Cutler— only to be concussed in that same game and relinquish the starting position.
He ended his career just six seasons after it began, 1-13 as a starter, with 7 touchdowns to 14 picks. And Mel Kiper would still like for you to listen to his opinions.
Years down the line, Panthers coach John Fox even owned that he never scouted Clausen even once before drafting him– he didn’t figure they’d be in a position to make the pick, so why bother? Like in a Madden game when you’re chilling in the third round and someone with “top 10 value” slides to you– YOLO, I figure.
How could someone, who paid Matt Cassell to break down film of Charlie Weiss and Brady Quinn, go wrong? There are just some mysteries in life that we’ll never have an answer to. But the Clausen saga was an all-timer. He was so brash and so cock-sure, that he came out of college early because he knew he was ready to go to the pros, only to go somewhere where he couldn’t compete, and was fed to the wolves. What would have happened if he stayed put another year and he was on that sharp 2010 Notre Dame team with Brian Kelly? More fun, what would have happened if he didn’t get hit and started over Jay Cutler for the rest of the year? Or was it all a media push, and his losing record at a storied program was all we needed to see? We’ll never know, and Clausen will never be more than a story of a cocky kid with gallons of untapped potential.

Running back Tim Biakabutuka was drafted over Heisman winner Eddie George, 8th overall, almost off the force of one single performance in the Michigan/OSU game. With Marvin Harrison on the board. Kerry Collins quit the team shortly after. Or, Kelvin Benjamin claiming that he deliberately ran the 40 slow to make sure he went to the Panthers, not the Jags, then claimed it was a joke. Maybe.

Hi! Posting from my throwaway, but I'm a regular contributor here on my other account.
Guys... I did a bad thing this morning, and I need some advice on how to handle it better going forward.
I have a wonderful 2.5-year-old toddler. He's really the greatest ever, but he's in a stage of not listening or stopping behaviors when we ask, and even worse, doubling down on them when we try to redirect or correct his behavior. For the most part, it's easy to remain calm or disengage when these things happen, but recently he's become fixated on either slapping my glasses off of my face, or grabbing them and hurling them with all his might.
I of course find this infuriating. I only have one pair of glasses and I need them to... you know... see and be able to drive a car and do my work. They were expensive. I have major executive function issues, so it was a big challenge getting the eye appointment and arranging the medical insurance, etc., to get them in the first place... these are my first new glasses in about 10 years. My last ones finally were so scratched and were no longer effective... Turns out that my eyesight got much worse during the pandemic and after having my son (can pregnancy make your eyesight worse?).
Anyway... My son will not stop grabbing them off of my face. He finds it hilarious. It's been going on for months now. He'll do it at random points throughout the day, but mostly when I'm changing his diaper.
So, today I got him up in the morning. We snuggled for a bit on the recliner - he was being cute and it was so nice. Then I got him to the changing table. His diaper was FILLED with poo and pee, but as soon as I laid him down and started cleaning him up he started going for my glasses. I asked him calmly to stop. I said calmly that my glasses were important and I need them to see. I said he was hurting mommy by grabbing at my face. But the more I tried to get him to stop, the more he started kicking and laughing and throwing his arms toward my face in an attempt to smack them away or grab them. I held his hands still and calmly explained it's not kind to take my glasses and to please stop. He'd calm down for a minute, but as soon as I'd let go and start trying to finish changing his diaper he'd start laughing and grabbing at my face again.
So, after several minutes of this, and not being able to finish changing his diaper because I couldn't get close enough to him to do it without him smacking my face, I lost my cool. I grabbed his wrist and hit the back of his hand and said "NO! STOP IT!"
I didn't hit it hard - it was more like a demonstrative tap rather than a slap or a hit - but he immediately froze in shock. Looked up at me with this look of utter betrayal and said "Mommy hit my hand?" And then he just started sobbing these huge sobs...
I felt so incredibly guilty and ashamed. I had never done anything like that before and it was a moment of really bad judgement. I wrapped my arms around him and gave him a big kiss and held him while he cried and just kept saying "I am so sorry. Mommy is sorry. Mommy made a mistake. It's not okay to hit. Mommy was wrong. I love you and you're a good boy."
Once he calmed down, I said I was sorry again, and explained that I got upset because he wouldn't listen to me, and it's not funny for mommy when he tries to steal my glasses and they could break.
He then hit my hand the same way I had, and I felt horrible that now I've modeled bad behavior. So I said it's okay to be angry, but mommy isn't allowed to hit and he's not allowed to hit either. He then seemed to snap out of it, and started pretending to tickle me, and the rest of the morning was smooth and no issues.
But... I am just wracked with guilt. I know I didn't hurt him physically, but I betrayed his trust. I always said I'd never use physical punishment, and I guess... I just got to the end of my rope and didn't know what else to do.
So please... give me all your advice on how to do this better. I've tried so many things. I've tried disconnecting and walking away. Me leaving the room tends to be the most effective thing. But, while this is easy to do if we're in the play room, or at the end of the diaper change, it's not so easy to disengage and walk away during times like today when I need to be physically close to him to clean him up. I can't plop him down covered in poop in the middle of the room and walk off unless I want to clean up poop for ages afterwards.
I've tried distracting him by giving him a toy to play with or something else to focus on, but the urge to grab my glasses seems to win out once he's become fixated on them. I've tried calmly explaining that it hurts mommy, isn't nice, etc. I've tried counting to three. I've tried tapping out and getting my husband, but I can't do that on days like today when I'm alone. I've tried asking nicely. I've tried asking angrily. I've tried yelling "OUCH!" or "NO!" It's still a battle every day trying to get him to leave my face and glasses alone.
I unfortunately need my glasses to see what I'm doing and no, contacts are not an option.
I'm open to any and all thoughts and ideas of things that have worked with you.

So in the beginning of the pregnancy baby’s heart rate was in the 150s then each appointment it was slower 140s, 130s and then yesterday it was 125. I’m officially 20 weeks today and feeling lots of his movement so I know he’s active and okay and my doctor didn’t seem concerned ab his heart rate, but is it normal for babies heart rates to change that much throughout pregnancy?? I’m just anxious bc I’ve lost a baby so everything freaks me out.

My best friends (24F) and I (23F) have been best friends for almost 8 years now. She is like my sister. She lost her mom 5 years ago. It's just her and her dad now. I have always been there for her and so has she. We have been inseparable since high school. We went to the same college too. We are done with our undergrad so we don't meet daily but we hang out at least once a week. I visit her and spend a night at hers.
Few days ago, I got sick and couldn't go anywhere. I switched my phone off rested at home. I started to get better yesterday so I texted her I would be coming to hers today, but then went to meet some other friends yesterday because I had to go receive something they had brought for me. She called me at the same time and I told her I was not home and I would call her once I got home. so I got home and called her. She didn't pick up. I called her again in the morning and she started complaining saying I visited other friends but not her. She said she needed me and she was patiently waiting for me but I chose to hang out with other friends instead. I tried explaining but things got worse when she said I was being defensive when I should have just said sorry. She cried and sent me long messages saying how I hurt her and stuff.
The thing is this is not the first time this has happened. This is probably the 3rd time. And another friend of ours cut her off due to the same reason but she keeps playing victim every time. And I also feel like it's draining. I like my alone time too but she thinks if we don't meet regularly or talk then I am being a shitty friend. I have my own shit to deal with. So would I be the asshole if I told her that she is being extremely toxic? For the record, I am her only close friend left now. She thinks I will ''betray'' her like others did.

Let me preempt this second post on Soviet serial killer Andrei Chikatilo by apologising for a lengthy gap between the previous part and this one. My future write-ups will probably only comprise a single part, but I'm still hoping to post them more regularly. Frankly I've been a little reluctant to cover this case since it's already well-known outside of Russia and there's plenty of information I've had to compile. I originally wanted to limit this story to two parts, but I’ve now decided to split it into three parts instead. The first one was about the investigation into the serial murders occurring in the Rostov region of Russia. This one is about Chikatilo’s early life and the development of his proclivities, as well as his second arrest. The last part will be about his interrogation, trial, and final years. I would recommend checking out the first part to get a better understanding of who exactly we are talking about today.
Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo was born on 16 October 1936 in a small village in the Sumy Oblast of Ukraine. When he was just four years old, the Soviet Union's so-called Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany broke out and Chikatilo's father left to fight in it, leaving his mother to watch over both Andrei and his older brother Stepan. In late 1942 Chikatilo's village was taken over by the Germans who started carrying out public executions. Chikatilo almost became a victim of one such execution, though luckily he hit his head on a rock in the commotion and lost consciousness, while the Nazis left him among the bodies, believing him dead. That episode might have given Chikatilo brain damage in addition to diagnosed hydrocephalus, bedwetting, and myopia.
In 1943, Chikatilo's mother gave birth to a girl whom she named Tatiana. Considering her husband had left the village over two years prior, the identity of the father was unknown, though she had possibly been raped by a German soldier. The Chikatilo family was starving to such a point that Andrei had to subsist on grass and roots just to stay alive. Around the same time his brother Stepan disappeared and his fate, like the identity of his sister's father, is a mystery. Andrei's mother would tell him that Stepan was kidnapped by starving neighbours and cannibalised. Things went bad for Chikatilo's father as well - after being captured by Germans and sent to a concentration camp, where he developed tuberculosis, he was eventually freed by the Allies... only to be sentenced to a labour camp back at home as a suspected Nazi collaborator. Like many fellow soldiers, he managed to survive German camps but died in the Gulag.
In 1944, Andrei went to school, where he proved himself a poor pupil due to both his incredible shyness and short-sightedness. He was also mercilessly bullied by his classmates, both verbally and physically, but he was too timid to fight back. Years later, he would complain that all his life he had been "treated like a doormat." At the same time, Chikatilo developed an interest in politics and quickly became a veritable expert on Marxism-Leninism.
After graduating from school, he initially wanted to become a lawyer and applied to the Moscow State University but couldn't secure the position due to the highly competitive nature of the entrance exams. He pivoted to engineering but joined the military before finishing his studies. After his discharge, Chikatilo moved to the Rostov oblast in Russia, where he started working at a phone station and writing for local newspapers. He eventually married (more on that later) and decided to go back to studies, earning degrees in linguistics and teaching.
By 1970, he was teaching Russian language and literature at a boarding school in Novoshakhtinsk, which is when his sexual perversions first manifested. He would sit near female students, pretending to explain something, and grope them. In the evening he would wait until the girls started undressing before bedtime and barge into their room unexpectedly or, even worse, enter the room at night and molest the children, groping them and licking their genitals. Eventually he was forced to resign after groping a female student during a day out on the beach. Chikatilo took a second shot at teaching in 1978 (by then he and his family had relocated to the nearby Shakhty), but that stint was, too, cut short. Chikatilo, who was ridiculed by his students for occasionally touching his own genitals during classes, tried to grope a male pupil, which caused others to come to the boy’s rescue and beat Chikatilo up. He was fired from the school.
It’s worth noting that the very first time that Chikatilo experienced a sexual climax was not under normal circumstances either. One day when he was home alone, his sister’s female friend came to visit and the sight of the 13-year-old’s blue pantaloons excited Andrei so much that he wrestled the girl to the ground and got on top of her, which was enough to cause an ejaculation.
His later sexual life was an abject failure. Chikatilo was a tall, good-looking young man who received a lot of attention from local women, but his impotence precluded him from sexually performing (or even deriving any pleasure from intercourse) and sometimes became a source of mockery from his girlfriends. On more than one occasion, Chikatilo even attempted suicide because of the psychological and emotional frustration his impotence brought him.
However, he seemingly caught a lucky break when his sister introduced him to one of her friends called Feodosia. The two got married and while their sexual life was virtually non-existent (his wife later estimated that they had sex 25 times at best), Chikatilo barely managed to father two children, a girl and a boy. His sexual drive was strong, however, so in secret from Feodosia he bought a small wooden hut on the edge of Shakhty, which he used as a place for trysts with local prostitutes. Despite her husband’s impotence, Feodosia made peace with it because Andrei was a hard worker who didn’t drink or smoke, which was more than could be said about many other men.
Soon after he was fired from the Shakhty school in 1978, Chikatilo committed his first murder, luring 8-year-old Elena Zakotnova to the his secret hut, killing her, and throwing her body into the nearby river. I also talked about this crime in the first part.
“We entered the hut and immediately I threw myself on top of her. She started screaming. I gagged her but couldn’t engage in intercourse. Her screams excited me. I then grabbed a knife. After I realised I had killed the girl, I got up, got dressed, took the corpse to [river] Grushevka and submerged it in water. Her school bag followed.”
If you read my first post on Chikatilo, you may remember that the police managed to create a composite sketch of the murderer and the school’s principal confidently pointed to his former employee Andrei Chikatilo as the man in question. Unfortunately, Feodosia lied about her husband being at home at the time of the murder, thus giving him an alibi.
It was three years until Chikatilo claimed his second victim, a teenage prostitute, as he was afraid of getting caught. After Chikatilo solicited the girl’s services he tried to have sex with her, but his impotence got the better of him yet again. The girl apparently started mocking him, saying that his “apparatus” wasn’t working. That both embarrassed and infuriated Chikatilo, who proceeded to kill her. “I was achieving mental relief by hacking away without even looking,” he would later tell the detectives. Before the Rostov Ripper confessed to killing Zakotnova, that girl was considered his first victim.
One thing that in my opinion bears significance in the case of Chikatilo is that he never resorted to kidnapping his victims or threatening them with a knife. Every single woman and child who followed the killer to their demise did so of their own volition. The Rostov Ripper was extremely cunning and could always find a way to convince his victims to go with him willingly. He also managed to appear entirely harmless, presenting himself as a mild-mannered, soft-spoken older gentleman. He reportedly couldn’t even kill a chicken as it made him queasy.
However, once bloodlust overtook him, he would transform into a sadistic fiend, stabbing away at his victims, mutilating them, and even cannibalising some of their body parts. The sight of blood brought Chikatilo such excitement that his head would start spinning, blood pressure would go up, and he would lose all impulse control. The next half hour or so would be spent in a dazed, disoriented state, with him stabbing trees with a knife, walking in circles, or almost getting hit by passing cars. Confusion would soon turn into blissful relief, and Chikatilo admitted to sleeping like a baby after committing murders as if he was resting from unloading a freight car. It typically took two or three months before the “high” wore off and Chikatilo went out hunting again.
I should also note that Chikatilo, like fellow Soviet serial killers Alexander Berlizov and Gennady Mikhasevich, was part of a volunteer unit assisting the police in searching for the murderer and even had a document confirming it. That made it easier for him to avoid law enforcement as he had access to information that regular people didn’t.
In late 1984, by which point Chikatilo had murdered 32 people, he was arrested and the police found a very peculiar collection of things in his suitcase (the circumstances surrounding the arrest can also be found in the previous post). After only spending three months in jail for theft, Chikatilo and his family relocated to Novocherkassk. His job in logistics enabled him to travel around the Soviet Union, and as a result, several murders were committed hundreds of miles away from Rostov or Novocherkassk.
After his release from jail, Chikatilo killed two women (one of them all the way in Moscow suburbs) in 1985 and then decided to lay low for almost two years. When the Ripper resumed killing in May 1987, his victim preferences had changed somewhat, with him now targeting boys more often. One teenager had the misfortune of having a quick smoke in the hedgerow when he ran into the killer. Another was lured to Chikatilo's imaginary dacha under the pretence of forging a sick leave. Yet another kid agreed to the offer of celebrating his successful entrance exams. Like I said before, Chikatilo never had to coerce or threaten his victims into accompanying him. Because no new murders took place in the Rostov region between 1985 and 1988, some in the police even began thinking that the murderer had been arrested for unrelated charges or even committed suicide. In reality, he was simply killing away from Rostov.
Between May 1987 and November 1990, the killer claimed 19 more lives. Let us now return to the ending of my previous post and look at how Chikatilo was eventually apprehended. As you may remember, the Ripper’s last victim was a homeless woman named Svetlana Korostik whom he killed in the forest next to a way station on 6 November 1990. The woman put up a struggle, resulting in scratches to Chikatilo’s face, as well as leaves and small branches getting stuck on his suit. Upon exiting the forest, he was approached by sergeant Igor Rybakov, who took note of his dishevelled look and large duffel bag that seemed out of place in the woodland area (unbeknownst to the officer, the bag contained Svetlana Korostik’s severed breasts). While the sergeant had no valid reason to arrest the strange man, he jotted down his details in a report and sent it to the higher-ups. Eventually it reached the lead investigator on the case Issa Kostoyev, who instantly remembered that the name Chikatilo had already crossed his desk.
He quickly ordered to set up surveillance of Chikatilo, who remained none the wiser and continued approaching women and children in search for a new victim. Ten days later, on 20 November Chikatilo took leave from work to visit a doctor – his penultimate victim, a 16-year-old boy, had fought the killer hard and bitten his finger, which later got swollen. Chikatilo’s wife was still at work when he came home, so he grabbed a bite to eat and went out to buy some beer, carrying with him an empty three-litre can. It was a cool, cloudy autumn day. At the time, beer was quite difficult to get a hold of in Russia, so Chikatilo had a fairly long walk ahead of him.
All this time he was being followed by a surveillance team. After buying only 300 millilitres of beer (which struck the officers trailing him as odd considering he was carrying a three-litre can), he briefly went into a café. As he walked out and passed the cops, one of them asked, “What is your surname, citizen?” “Chikatilo,” he replied. “Citizen Chikatilo, you are under arrest.” He exhibited no reaction towards being arrested but, as the officers were taking him to the police car, he muttered, “here’s another proof you shouldn’t feud with the higher-ups.”

In the weeks since Silicon Valley Bank's collapse and associated crisis in the global banking world, the U.S. Treasury market has been ground zero for dramatic price moves shaping investor sentiment.
And the standout within this volatility has been the swing in the yield on 2-year Treasury notes.
As we noted earlier this month, the yield on Treasury notes and bonds can be thought of as the average of the Federal Reserve's benchmark interest rate over that period.
As a result, the 2-year is often seen as most representative of the near-term path of interest rates, capturing what traders think the fed funds rate will be, on average, over the next two years.
Since peaking at 5.05% on March 8, the 2-year yield has dropped more than 100 basis points, or more than 1 percentage point, in the last few weeks while trading as low as 3.76% on March 24.
With the 2-year yield settling closer to 4.1% on Wednesday and the Fed's benchmark target range standing at 4.75%-5%, we can comfortably say the market is pricing in a hefty cut in interest rates by March 2025.📷But in the view of some economists, pricing in three or four rate cuts from the Fed over the next two years splits the difference on what a longer, fuller banking crisis would or would not mean for markets.
"There is no middle ground in [a] banking crisis, it either happens or it doesn't," wrote Neil Dutta, chief economist at Renaissance Macro, in an email on Wednesday.
"This means the bond market is either pricing in too many rate cuts or not enough."
So as the dust clears on the initial burst of bank failures, forced takeovers, and rumored next-to-falls, it seems investors are again facing a risk that has plagued the fixed income markets for the better part of a year. The risk the economy stays stronger than expected while the Fed raises rates for longer than expected.
In a note to clients published Wednesday, rates strategists at Bank of America Global Research led by Bruno Braizinha flagged the recent banking sector stress triggered by Silicon Valley Bank and pulled forward expectations for the Fed to pause by about 5 months.

"The economic impact of recent banking stress is highly uncertain and rate markets removed about six hikes from the expected fed funds rate priced into the December 2023 FOMC meeting," Bank of America's team wrote. Notably, investors have been betting that an end to the Fed's rate hiking cycle could come in about 6 months for the last 9 months.
In other words, the bond market has been too pessimistic about the economy and optimistic Fed Chair Jay Powell would stop hammering fixed income investors.
"We see downside risk to our forecasts if the credit cycle turns, but if data proves resilient and banking concerns subside, the market may unwind some of the recent rally and focus back on the re-acceleration risks that were arising just before the confidence crunch started in the banking sector," BofA's team wrote.
Or as Dutta said: "[The] main risk is that conditions are fine."
"Medium-run, the Fed assumes [a] sudden stop in the economy," Dutta wrote. "Assuming current tracking estimates are in the ballpark, to hit the Fed's GDP estimate implies real growth contracts [at a seasonally adjusted annualized rate of 0.5%] in each of the next three quarters."
Last week, the Fed's latest economic forecasts suggested officials see GDP growing just 0.4% this year, down from the 0.5% expected in December. Next year doesn't get much better, with GDP growth expected to clock in at just 1.2%.
Data from the Atlanta Fed, however, suggests the economy has grown at an annualized rate of 3.2% in the first quarter of the year. Hence the consecutive quarters of negative growth Dutta cites as being needed for the Fed's forecasts to come to fruition with Q1 that strong.
Forecasts that also called for rates to end the year slightly higher than where they stand today. Meaning it won't take much more than holding steady from the U.S. economy for 2023 to look like 2022 for those betting on the Fed to call it quits.
"Thus, the main risk is that conditions are fine," Dutta wrote.
"Not reaccelerating, not gangbusters, but just okay. That's a low bar to clear, in my view."
