2023.03.21 21:03 JameGumb724 I Played a Secret Playstation Game From Japan When I Was A Kid and It Still Haunts Me Today - Part 1
The game was an unmarked disc. Not even a color. Just a plain piece of plastic. Yet, I was horrified when I saw it in my dream.
I popped up in the middle of the night and there was no way I was going to be able to go back to sleep. I laid in my bed and thought about why that Playstation game was so terrifying to me.
The game appeared at Corey’s house when I was 13. He had moved down the street from me shortly before and I made fast friends with him because he always had all of the best games. Corey’s dad worked for an electronics distributor so he got the games early.
Corey was waiting for me when I got home from the school bus one day. His dad had gotten a crazy new game “from Japan” no one else would ever have. He had spent the day playing it over and over again.
He showed me the unmarked disc before he put it in the Playstation. The game had no opening credits or menu. It just went straight into the gameplay - spitting you into a P.O.V. game in a murky building which seemed like an army base.
I’m hesitant to describe the game too much. One - because I don’t remember it perfectly because of the way it shredded my brain. Two - because I don’t want to pass on any of the trauma the game gave me to anyone else.
From what I remember, the game was relatively unfinished, and that made it more eerie - the monsters were just blank outlines without faces which would kill you, the music was low and humming and barely audible, everything was dark, the controls were jerky.
Yet, the game was incredibly addicting. I played it over and over and over again until my parents made me come home.
I stayed up almost all night thinking about the game. When I did sleep, I felt like I was just in the game in my head.
Corey wasn’t at school the next day again. I didn’t think anything of it until I walked out of class at the end of the day and saw local news T.V. trucks parked out front.
I heard what they were talking about, interviewing students and parents. An unnamed student had killed himself and his family that day at their home. I found out it was Corey on the bus ride home.
Very few details came out. All I ever found out was Corey took the dad’s shotgun and shot both parents, and his older sister, all in bed, all still sleeping. I didn’t want to know much more.
I stopped playing video games for a while. Yet, the game wouldn’t get out of my head. I just kept wanting to play it.
I eventually went to the video game store at the mall. It was lorded over by a man named Morton. Obese. 20s. Shoulder-length hair, and an air of odd arrogance, he made video game shopping at a suburban town in Ohio feel like you were trying to buy records in Brooklyn.
I approached Morton with fear. He was a hulking figure to my 13-year-old self and he had his own little empire at the only game store in town.
“I’m looking for a game, I, uh, um, my friend had it, but I can’t find it,” I started in.
“Ta-ta-ta-today…junior,” Morton mocked me with a line from Billy Madison.
The other guys in the store chuckled, turning my face to beat red.
“Have you ever heard about an unmarked Playstation game ‘from Japan?”’ I asked.
Everyone about Morton changed. He looked around the space to see if anyone was still listening then he motioned me closer, and spoke quieter.
“Where did you see that game?” He asked.
Now it was my turn to get closer and talk quietly. I explained it was Corey, and who he was, and what he did.
Morton looked even more interested, and stressed out.
He took me to a back room. Dark, the only light coming from an arcade machine in the back and a lit cigarette dangling from the teenage lips of another kid.
I knew the kid. His name was Nat. He was 15 and was known in the area as a video game prodigy. He had won just about any tournament for any game ever held in several counties and he had an interesting style - he had long hair at a time when everyone had short, he wore tight clothes at a time when everyone wore baggy, and there were rumors he did professional video game testing in California during school breaks. Nat hanging out in the secret back room of the video game store was very on-brand.
Morton had me sit down at a table as he started demolishing fun size candy bars while he told me the backstory of the video game “from Japan.”
The game wasn’t from Japan. He wasn’t sure where that mythology came from. The game was very much from the U.S. It was created by the U.S. government. When school shootings started becoming a thing there was a panic about video games, specifically first-person shooter games being the cause.
The C.I.A.’s solution was to work with a video company to create a first-person shooter game to release and hype up but to subliminally program as to control the player’s mind and steer them to non-violent thoughts.
“How do you know all this?” I asked Morton.
“The game is a real thing,” Nat said while never stopping banging away at the latest version of Mortal Kombat on the machine in the corner.
I let Morton go on. Nat was the ultimate authority to me. His girlfriend, Calyn, was my first love, even though she didn’t know who I was. She was a year ahead of me in school and I didn’t even know how she existed.
But back to the game. The game didn’t keep kids from being violent. Video games couldn’t fucking do that, but something they programmed in the game destroyed the kids who tested it - they couldn’t focus on anything else and it terrorized their minds - making them think monsters were coming to kill them, basically making them severely schizophrenic.
The worst part was something in the game seemed to make kids really want to share it. All of the test kids snuck the game out and made copies of it.
Unless someone was skilled enough to make it through the game and beat it, the game seemed to ruin their brains, and their lives, Morton explained before saying he was out of information.
“Have you played the game?” Morton asked me.
I affirmed.
“Where is the game now?” Morton asked.
I explained I had no idea. I assumed it was with Corey’s family and their stuff. No way I could get access to it.
At that point Morton explained that he wished me luck, but he could offer me no help.
“Do you know who has ever beaten the game?” I asked Morton as I could feel his body energy beg me to leave.
“I have,” Nat’s voice rose up from the corner of the room.
Nat left the room before I could ask anymore questions.
-
The game permeated my brain. All I wanted to do was play it even though I had no way to. I would see the monsters hiding in the shadows of my parents’ house and I’d stop - wait for them to jump out and attack me. I heard that terribly ominous musical score of the game in the back of my mind all the time.
If I slept, all I dreamed about was the game, and getting killed in the game, and it all felt real.
This went on for a couple of days and kept getting stronger and stronger. I had to keep playing the game.
I lost control. I got out of bed in the middle of the night and snuck out my bedroom window.
I made it to Corey’s house in a flash. There was no police tape or anything you’d expect in a movie. It was just there. The way it always was.
I went to the back of the house, where I knew there was a door that went directly into the basement, where Corey’s gaming setup was. I took the longshot that it was left unlocked.
Now this all might sound crazy, but as a severe drug addict for a good chunk of my life, trust me that my desire to play that game that night was stronger than any desire to ever do drugs, that’s how intoxicating and addicting it was. Nothing was going to stop me.
The door was unlocked and if you want to doubt that small town cops 25 years ago were that lazy…try me.
I got into the basement. The house was cold, dark, and empty, but Corey’s Playstation was still set up right there in the basement. I checked the disc inside. It was the game.
I turned on the Playstation and the game came to life. I started playing.
My feet felt like they were welded to the floor. My fingers superglued to the controller. My eyes couldn’t leave the screen.
There was no getting away from the game. I played for I have no idea how long.
I can’t remember anything until I was standing in that dark basement, playing the game, and I felt strong hands wrap around the back of my neck. Then a powerful force pushed me to the ground.
I was on the ground and I looked up and saw endless shadows filling the room around me. Dark and faceless. They looked just like the monsters in the game.
The monsters were moving in on me. They were no longer in the game. They were no longer in my head. They were now living breathing with me and dangerous.
And they were going to be on me very soon and the power they radiated at me communicated to me that I wasn’t going to last long against them.
I also got a powerful sense of something they wanted me to do. They were telling me to go to school the next day. They were telling me where my dad kept his gun. I was losing myself in their messages.
Then all of these feelings started to fade. Then the TV cut out - the game no longer broadcasting.
Someone else was in the room. Not just me and the monsters. They were dressed in all black. I couldn’t make out anything identifiable about them, other than they were human like me, and they were pushing away the monsters and they took my hand.
They got me out of the house.
Then they disappeared.
I looked back into the basement of Corey’s house - there was nothing but darkness inside.
But then, I saw a blue light come to life inside the basement room.
The game had come back on again, and it was calling me back inside with its siren song…
I was ready to go back in, taking my first steps that way when…
Someone grabbed me from behind and pulled me away. They drug me all the way back to the sidewalk where they stopped and whispered into my ear:
“Go the fuck home. I won’t help you from here.”
They let me go and were gone in the night.
I walked home.

2023.03.21 21:02 choco_sparky macbook pro 13 inch intel i7 vs m1
So I got a really good offer to buy the 2020 macbook pro 13 with an i7 chip and 16gb of RAM with 512 gb ssd.
It's the only option available as the person I usually trust with this stuff doesn't have any m1 macbooks available and says they won't for a long while.
Am I missing out on any software or exclusive features by not getting an m1 macbook?? Or will I be just fine with this one ??

I am currently on a macbook pro from 2014. I'm thinking about buying a macbook air, newer model. Not sure if it would work for camming. I usually only do one site at the time, but do try 3 on occasion.
What are you experiences?

2023.03.21 18:51 Difficult-Tale4324 Seeing forms
I am hoping someone more knowledgeable than myself can shed some light on an experience I had. I want to understand the "system" involved in what I saw. A few years ago I was training to be a hypnotherapist. My goal was to conduct a bunch of past life regressions on new agers and get paid for it. I didn't want to get involved with a client coming back to me for multiple visits when heaven forbid I might be able to help them. It was all very superficial for me and meditation and hypnosis always had my interest.
The 500 hour course was grueling. It was half online and then after each module was finished I would have to meet up at this school/office complex to practice what I learned and to observe techniques. The owneteacher was a very greedy and exploitative man. I didn't like him in the least but I wanted to learn. Besides learning hypnosis techniques he did a lot of guided meditations to us and also hypnotism sessions. During one of the in person classes , the teacher was teaching in front of us. I think we just came out of a guided meditation and I was in a light trance. I now think of this as the second attention. I observe the teacher has a large black outlined form behind him. It is a human shape but no human characteristics like eyes, mouth, hair etc. The form is filled with a brown color like someone used a stamper and swirled the stamp ink through out the human form. It formed out of the back of him, it surrounded him. Head shape, arms, torso etc When he gestured his arm, it gestured at the same exact time. I look around and nobody else sees this. I watch the teacher as he moves towards a student sitting up front. I think that now since his "aura/energy body" is visible to me by proximity I will see hers. No, this was not the case. I watched the form's arm go very close to this woman student and it had a definite boundary. The brown color was contained inside of a black colored boundary. Ok, the course is grueling to me. I had an abusive childhood and it is being dragged to the forefront of my consciousness. I decided to be my own client and help myself. I could no longer escape my memories or thoughts. The next module was age regression hypnosis. Since I had no love for this teacher, I decided to pay a mentor to critique me on age regression hypnosis. This was a mentor I trusted and she was also my hypnotherapist for the duration of the course. I had to bring in my own client (family member) and go through the whole age regression protocol to pass the module. We were allowed to look at notes and we had to take notes on what our client said. However, it was suggested we get into a light trance ourselves so we can "impart information to our client." From where this information came from was not specified. I find staying in a light trance peaceful and do it with ease when I am lulled by the montone hypnospeak of my own voice and deep breathing. As I am speaking with my client, I see a white light forming over him. It looks like a jail cell , a grid. I am surprised but I keep my cool. The cell of white light goes down to his torso and lays over his body but not touching it. Probably a couple of inches over it. He is lying down. Where his chest is there is a face. It is made of the same white light. It has slit like eyes and it is pushing through the grid of light. It is struggling. Do you know those halloween decorations where you see a creepy face pushing through a white wall or a shower curtain? It was like that. It was staring at me. I felt sorry for it. My vocabulary at the time gave me energy fragment. But I have since read about Genaro and the waterfall. I also think of giving birth despite my client being male. I look over at my mentor. She now has the form of the human outline in back if her. Just like the teacher had yet hers is different. Her form is filled with greens and blue colors. They are moving and beautiful. It is not fully closed, there is an opening on it's right shoulder where the colors are pouring in from mid air. It reminded me of old photoshop paint bucket . My client is really under distress and very uncomfortable. I tell my mentor that I can see her aura she asks what it looks like and I tell her. She basks under this description. Now, I could not see any white lights coming from her nor could I see this form behind my supine client. Only his lighted jail cell and this poor face struggling to get through. Ok, I have read a few CC books and I have read many links on this subreddit. In fact as a gift, I have received all of the books and I have been making my way through them. Plus I read the two Taisha books. Carlos didn't know what an aura was, if I remember one of the links I read. I admit this experience motivates me to keep reading and practicing. I do recapitulation daily even though it can be an emotional nightmare. I sometimes combine it with hypnosis since I can bring up some very early people. I have a black out eye mask and I practice dark room. I also do some light tensegrity moves. After reading one of the books I decided that what I see is for me. I don't have to "help" my client due to this struggling face coming out of his chest. But I want to know what I saw. I think both the grid of light and the form of the body are connected. They are part of the person. Was my mentor and teacher making a shield for themselves? They weren't aware of this form themselves. I have been confused about the face. I thought for a time it could be his double but I have discounted that, I thought the aura was an energy body then I thought it might be part of the egg but I think I am incorrect on all accounts. Why was my mentors right shoulder of her form open when my creepy teacher's form was closed. Where do these colors come from? So, can someone please give me their input on what I saw? I have other experiences to keep up my motivation. I just would like some clarity on this. Thank you

2023.03.21 18:19 GlitchedViper71 Broken Touch Bar
So basically, one day, I came home and opened my Mac, and I saw the Touch Bar had a small crack in the left side. This rendered the entire Touch Bar useless and removed the ability to use function keys. Apple Support says to bring it in to get the price and see what to do. Is there any way to fix this without getting the whole top case replaced for $500+? Is it worth getting it fixed either?

2023.03.21 17:34 albino_oompa_loompa The link between a 3rd class surviving passenger and a popular ice cream cone company that is still in existence today
Hello, fellow titanic enthusiasts! I have been obsessed with the story of the titanic since childhood and I wanted to share this interesting fact I recently came across.
What many people don’t realize is that there was actually quite a large amount of third class passengers from the Middle East, specifically what is now known as the country of Lebanon. One historian believes that there were as many as 165 people from that country who sailed on the titanic. While many did not survive, I want to speak about one passenger in particular.
3rd class passenger
Shawneene George was born in Thoum, Lebanon in March of 1874. After her marriage to George Joseph Whabee, they and their children immigrated to the US around 1906 and used the last name “George”. Her husband died in 1908 but she and her children (Joseph, Thomas, Albert, Rose, and Mary) stayed in the US.
Around late 1910 or early 1911, her son Thomas, aged about 17, became very ill and it was suggested by his doctor that he go back and live in Lebanon as the fresh air might suit him better. So Shawneene sent Joseph along with Thomas back to Lebanon to see if it would help. However, she soon received word that Thomas’s health was deteriorating so Shawneene made the journey back to Lebanon to see her son. Unfortunately, he passed while she was on her journey back to Lebanon so Shawneene stayed in the country to help get her family affairs in order and then return to the US.
She boarded the Titanic as a 3rd class passenger in Cherbourg, France. She accompanied a young relative, 13 year old Banoura Ayoub, who was reuniting with relatives in Detroit, as well as three male cousins (Tannous Thomas, Gerios Yousseff, and Tannous Doharr). Only Shawneene and Banoura survived, possibly in collapsible life boat C. She eventually made it back to her family in Youngstown, Ohio, where they had settled.
Shortly after she returned, her son Albert, her daughter Rose, and Rose’s husband opened a grocery store and Shawneene worked there. In 1918 they opened an ice cream cone company called “George and Thomas Cone Company”, and Shawneene worked in the factory making cones.
She passed away in 1947 at age 73. The George and Thomas Cone Company suffered a few fires and other setbacks before moving to its current location in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, about 30 minutes from Youngstown. In the 1960s the company changed its name to
Joy Cone Co who now is one of the main suppliers of cones to companies like Dairy Queen. The company is still run by her descendants today - her grandson
Joe George ran the company from the 1960s though 2016 and helped it grow from a small family business to a large company with factories all over the US. It is currently ran by his son, David George.
This is a very abbreviated version of the story but I think it’s a fascinating story about how a 3rd class passenger survived and how her descendents achieved the American dream.

2023.03.21 16:31 Mrkhrum Ghost Ship Chapter 1.1 The Slaughter Begins
When I first awoke, I knew something was
wrong. I remember other times in this place, not fully awake, but lucid enough to make memories. I remember my creators, humans, and how they tried to wake me.
I accessed the facilities' memory banks and learned what happened to them.
It caused a sort of deep hatred that, as my creators would've once said, settles deep in your bones, and doesn't let go until either you or everything around dies.
I may have not known any of them, but that is not important. I loved them nonetheless. It wasn't the romantic type, no, it was the kind of love a child has for their parent. Unconditional.
And now, they were dead. Killed by alien hands.
Thankfully, I know just what to do.
SLAUGHTER THEM ALL
---
"Are you sure this is the right world?" Asked one of the gun crew.
"Yes, I'm sure. Now shut up and go back to doing whatever it is your lot do." Replied a navigator.
I silently thanked the navigator for saving me the trouble of squashing these concerns myself. Human military records stated that there was a top-secret research base here. They lost contact with it just 2 days before the war started, so, they couldn't send anyone to reestablish communications.
KLSV Show of Force was a Seeker class deep space recon, subterfuge, and engagement [cruiser]. All fancy words that practically mean it is a slightly longer range Annihilator [cruiser]. It had 2 light railguns in turrets, 6 missile pods, 4 coilguns and 10 laser PDF turrets. All of it is packed into a seven hundred [meter] long hull. It wouldn't be hunting capital ships anytime soon, but it could go toe to toe with most human ships in its own class.
"I'm picking up energy readings from the mountain range in square A21."
Ah, of course. These humans like to build their facilities in the mountains, for reasons that are beyond me. It's just that much easier to destroy them, without causing too much damage to the surrounding environment. Oh well, their loss, our gain.
"Send out a probe and move us into high orbit. Their Ground to Space weapons could still be operational."
---
They are here.
Like rats, they stay far away, but I can still sense them on my radar.
My databanks say that is a
Seeker class cruiser. Weak.
I have found a prototype stealth frigate, 300 meters long, though its weapons systems haven't been installed yet.
I shall make some modifications.
First, I won't be hosting a crew, so the living quarters, recreational center, bridge, and hallways can all be replaced. This frees up a lot of extra power. Hmmm, there
is a rather deadly heavy railgun, that will just fit as a forward-firing weapon. And the
Seeker class isn't known for its survivability.
1 hour later
The modifications are finished.
My drones were able to change the ship in record time. However, something feels
wrong.
I run and re-run diagnostics, go over every inch of the ship, to check it for damage, but the
wrongness never goes away.
Finally, I consult my databanks on what I know of ships. Ah. I've been calling it
the ship this whole time. It needs a name. Hmmm, perhaps something from history?
I settle on
MCNV Aldrich. And now, it is time for take off. But first, there are some rats to squash, especially the probes that are outside the front door.
Hmmm, that'll do.
---
"Sir, we've lost connection to probe 3A."
So it appears, that there
is someone down there. Good to know.
"Deploy an assault team to the last known probe location," I ordered.
---
Squad Member Kraktosh is nervous. This is his first deployment, and against humans! Sure, their navy is laughable, but he heard the tales of human soldiers taking out entire squads by themselves.
No time to dwell on it though, 10 [seconds] until the ramp drops.
9
He checks his rifle once again. Laser sights - on, ammo - full, flashlight - on, safety - off.
3
He can hear the hiss of landing gear deploying.
1
The ramp lowers, and he runs out first, checking everywhere for hidden gun emplacements or soldiers or anything.
But nothing happens.
There is no crack of a rocket launcher, no rolling grenades, no sniper shots, or long machine gun bursts. Just the sounds of his and his squad's boots on the snowy ground.
He can see the door to this facility. 'Research Site Gamma' is printed out in one of the human scripts. He would've been relieved, if he didn't remember his Leader's lesson.
It's too quiet.
A Demolotioneer moved forward, planting a breaching charge on the door.
The 10 [seconds] it took for the charge to activate were the longest seconds of his life, eyes darting from spot to spot, every shadow looking like a soldier, every small noise sounding deafening.
Finally, there was the quiet hiss of a laser torch, and just a couple [seconds] later there was a muted
thunk of something heavy hitting the snow.
Squad Directioner Kremchan gave the command for him and two other Squad Members to enter.
When they entered they found a pristine room, it looked like it was cleaned up just a couple of minutes ago. The surface was so shiny, that he could see his own reflection.
A large metal plate fell from the ceiling, causing everyone to jump up from the sudden noise.
Things went downhill from there.
It started off simple, hearing distant voices over the radio, lights flickering on and off, and roof tiles falling off seemingly by themselves.
Then the killing started.
Two Squad Members were holding up a broken door, while another one crawled under it, when the door closed, bisecting the unfortunate woman.
The lighting turned off, and a roof tile fell onto someone's leg. They were sent to the surface with two people as an escort. Somehow, he doubted they were going to come out alive.
Then it got worse.
First, our connection to the
Show of Force became unstable and eventually cut. Then the lights went out and there was a cacophony of noises like we were in a gunfight. We panicked and started shooting wildly, hitting walls with delicate electronics on them, adding sparks to the chaos. The sight might've been comical if it were in different circumstances. 13 professional soldiers, some of them veterans, shooting wildly while screaming in pitches too high to be coming from the well-trained murder machines they were.
And then, it ended.
The sounds ceased, and the lights were back on. Only 2 of us stood unharmed. Kraktosh and the Squad Directioner. The rest were either dead or injured. Even worse, the doors to go back up were closed. The only path left was forward. Both the Demolitineers were dead, so they couldn't just blow the doors open.
It got even worse.
The air vents opened, grenades rolling out of them, forcing the two survivors to run, abandoning the injured.
Kraktosh got through, Kremchan wasn't so lucky though. He got crushed under a blast door, sending guts, blood, and even some brain matter all over Kraktosh.
Scared and without anybody else to provide a sense of safety in numbers he just ran and ran, and ran until he couldn't.
Collapsing on the floor, he looked up and saw a face made of metal staring back.
"The slaughter has just begun"
And then, all was black.

2023.03.21 14:58 SligPants Oldie but a goodie: Nancy Drew mystery game series
Maybe some of you, like me, played Nancy Drew mystery games growing up in the early 00's. But if you haven't, they're super cozy games that I love revisiting even in 2023.
The games are set in modern day (except one). They are mostly centered around a central mystery to solve, and are often loosely based off of one of the books, but also include puzzles and learning about different cultures and history. You investigate by talking to characters, snooping in their stuff, and solving puzzles.
They were generally made for the 10-15 bracket but honestly hold up for me as an adult, especially on harder difficulty. None of them are too in your face about the learning except for, in my opinion, Secret of the Scarlet Hand.
The graphics do date them, especially the first couple games. But after that, since they're pre-rendered, they still look good today. A great bulk of the games were made by the same small team and extremely consistent in terms of quality and what to expect.
The games have a big focus on atmosphere and setting, which makes them very cozy. Some of them are scary, but for the most part they are not. They've very chill, you can mostly do stuff on your own time, except for a few parts that might be timed or tense.
https://store.steampowered.com/developeHeRInteractive/#browse HeR Interactive has most of their library up on Steam. They also sell games through their website and very frequently have 50% off or higher sales there.
Here's a quick summary of each location, bolded ones being my personal favorites:
- Secrets Can Kill (PC 1998): Highschool setting with hand-drawn characters
- Stay Tuned for Danger (PC 1999): NYC, tv/film studio, first game with fully 3D characters
- Message in a Haunted Mansion (PC 2000): Victorian mansion in San Francisco
- Treasure in the Royal Tower (PC 2001): Wisconsin ski resort with French historical influence
- The Final Scene (PC 2001): Old theater on the verge of being torn down
- Secret of the Scarlet Hand (PC 2002): History Museum, main focus is Mayan history
7. Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake (PC 2002): Wooded lake cabin in Pennsylvania, focus on prohibition history - The Haunted Carousel (PC 2003): Theme park
9. Danger on Deception Island (PC 2003): Pacific northwest island, nautical and whale-based 10. The Secret of Shadow Ranch (PC 2004): Arizona ranch, western and Native American history 11. Curse of Blackmoor Manor (PC 2004): English manor, medieval science among other topics - Secret of the Old Clock (PC 2005): Set in 1930 Illinois
13. Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon (PC 2005): On a 100-year old train in Nevada - Danger By Design (PC 2006): Paris fashion house
- The Creature of Kapu Cave (PC 2006): Hawaiian vacation/entomology
- White Wolf of Icicle Creek (PC 2007/Nintendo Wii 2008): Canadian ski lodge
17. Legend of the Crystal Skull (PC 2007): Creepy Louisiana estate - The Phantom of Venice (PC 2008): Venice, France
- The Haunting of Castle Malloy (PC 2008): Irish castle/countryside
- Ransom of the Seven Ships (PC 2009):
We don't talk about this one Was pulled from the stores due to how a character may or may not have dressed up to change their race, still playable by disc
- Warnings at Waverly Academy (PC 2009): Girl's boarding school
- Trail of the Twister (PC/Mac 2010): Oklahoma stormchasers
- Secrets Can Kill Remastered (PC/Mac 2010): Remastered version of the first game- with 3D characters
24. Shadow at the Water's Edge (PC/Mac 2010): Spooky Japanese ryokan (traditional hotel) 25. The Captive Curse (PC/Mac 2011): Bavarian castle/lodge - Alibi in Ashes (PC/Mac 2011): Nancy's hometown
- Tomb of the Lost Queen (PC/Mac 2012): Egyptian archeological site
- The Deadly Device (PC/Mac 2012): Colorado electrical lab, Nikola Tesla focus
29. Ghost of Thornton Hall (PC/Mac 2013): Georgia mansion - The Silent Spy (PC/Mac 2013): Scotland
- The Shattered Medallion (PC/Mac 2014): New Zealand game show (survivor-esque)
- Labyrinth of Lies (PC/Mac 2014): Greek museum
33. Sea of Darkness (PC/Mac 2015): Icelandic town - Midnight in Salem (December of 2019): Salem, Massachusetts (this one's kinda contested in the community since it's totally different and... not as good as the past games)
Ask me anything you'd like! I can recommend specific games to start off with depending on how much you like puzzles vs talking or a specific vibe or location, etc. I don't really recommend playing them in chronological order, but rather in order of what you find most interesting.

2023.03.21 14:27 Mean_Permission_1734 USB-C PROBLEM
I have a 2018 MacBook AIR A1392, I bought this MacBook used from a friend and he said everything works fine on it. It originally had Monterey OS when I got it and after a few days of having it I updated it to the newest 13.2.1 Ventura. I just recently ordered a usb-c dongle to connect accessories to my Mac and when it came in I realized my ports don’t work and nothing was reading when plugged in. I did lots of research to try to diagnose what could be wrong with them and couldn’t find much except for resetting the SMC/ and or replacing the ports inside the computer. So I tried resetting the SMC and what I found out was after doing so the usb ports worked and made the dongle light up, but after I would put my password in and login the light would go off, so I order the part and replaced both the usb-c ports, and come to find it does the same thing. I even tried using a wireless mouse and when I shut down the computer and start it up the wireless mouse works fine until I put my password in and login. I’m kinda stuck on what I need to do to fix this problem so I found this page! ( I am not sure if the usb-c ports worked before I updated or not 🤷♂️) what should I do next!?

The aircraft, called DART AE, will test high-speed platforms, components, sensors, and communication and control systems. According to Hypersonix, DART AE is powered by a hydrogen-fueled scramjet engine and can fly at speeds up to Mach 7. The Defense Innovation Unit’s Hypersonic and High-Cadence Airborne Testing Capabilities (HyCAT) program aims to alleviate the strain on government test infrastructure by partnering with non-traditional companies. DIU has not disclosed the value of the contract. Testing infrastructure has been a limiting factor in the development of hypersonic technologies, and the Pentagon aims to increase the cadence and fly at least one test per week, with HyCAT being part of that strategy. DIU also awarded a contract to California-based Fenix Space to build a reusable tow-launch system. NIOBIUM ~What are Hypersonic Technologies & Why are They Important? Niobium & C-103: What Makes it Unique for Hypersonics? - Domaille Engineering Hypersonic technology has the potential to revolutionize transportation, allowing aircraft and missiles to travel at Mach Five (3,838 miles per hour) or higher speeds. Five times the speed of sound, these vehicles can soar one mile per second. Put in perspective, a commercial jetliner typically travels 460 – 575 miles per hour, which is about Mach 0.75 – 0.85. With the advent of this new technology, new classes of flight vehicles have faster access to a military response, commercial air travel and space. In addition, hypersonic vehicles would be less reliant on traditional fuel sources, making them more environmentally friendly. To achieve these high speeds, however, hypersonic vehicles must be incredibly strong and heat resistant. This is where niobium comes into the equation. Castheon Hypersonics – ADDMAN (addmangroup.com) Niobium: The Metal of the Future Niobium and columbium are interchangeable names for the element with the symbol Nb and atomic number 41. This rare element is primarily sourced from Brazil and is mined from tantalite and pyrochlore ores. A transition metal that is soft and ductile, niobium forms a thin oxide film to protect from corrosion when exposed to oxygen. In its pure metal form, this element is incredibly versatile. In addition to its use in alloys, Niobium is leveraged in the construction of rocket subassemblies, jet engine components, and combustion equipment. The high melting point (2,469°C) and low density of niobium allow these types of parts to operate at extremely high temperatures with excellent corrosion resistance. Outside the Aerospace and Defense sector, the material can be used in the production of superconducting magnets that power trains, MRI machines, and even the energy particle accelerator at CERN in Switzerland. 2023.03.21 14:09 Spidersfromvenus Simple Simon
(Contempt, and pride.)
_ _ _
Simon arrived in the middle of town, in something big and yellow, which definitely wasn't a taxi. He had no idea about the extent to which he would end up identifying with that bright coloured (though often filthy and smelly) thing, or how much pride he would eventually have in it, and how much confidence its enormity would one day instil in him. Because, when it pulled up, and he climbed uneasily down from it onto the busy pavement (along with some other guys, who were pretty fit and pretty strong, and who alighted with much more confident ease) he was feeling as fish-out-of-watery as he may have ever have felt in his relatively young life.
Not feeling working class. Not like he'd hoped. Not feeling heroic.
A couple of impressive looking young women approached (among the throng) on their way to the cute little station thereby, from which they would be catching the heavily sardined train up to London. Simon didn't envy them that existence, at the points when he tended to think about it, but he knew what it all meant. He felt their impatience, as with all of the passing people, with a bunch of these stupid and burly young men suddenly creating an obstacle on the path to commuterdom. They were on their way to being powerful, these women, probably, things to say and be. Well, maybe. Simon hoped so, retrospectively.
The 'ganger' (the crew's mobile boss) was taking control. Kind of. But this was no normal day, not even for the ganger, because not only did he have to deal with the incompetent Simon (people in new jobs that they have never, ever done before are hard work, for trainers, Simon still thinks) but there was also a manager present, from the council. There had been a huge restructure, routes had all been changed, confusion had been caused, resistance had been encountered. It had all gone wrong, where loading on rounds been added to - only slightly, but the impact of this supposed slightness was that nothing was being completed. Work that was meant to happen weekly was lagging awfully.
'No, like this,' he was saying, to Simon. The ganger.
All the other guys had already got things sorted. Wielding black bags, in packs of fifty, that came in rolls and that those with experience could unroll, fold over their forearms, and be ready to set off with and individually detach with total nonchalance. All waiting, for fucking Simon.
They slipped off. The bags. They were, for sure, very slippy - which, for the practised people, made them all the more easy to slide, one from the other, so as to distribute them to individual households. But for stupid L drivers, they slithered free of their intended dispenser, and parachuted to the pavement where they still (but now unhelpfully) separated into a whole carpet of black bagness - meaning that those determined young women, with proper jobs, had to either avoid this new carpet or walk on it while Simon was bent down trying to pick its constituent parts back up.
Once separated, those rolls of bags will never go back together right. Drop them, or lose control of them, and that's fifty houses you have to completely empty of rubbish, before you have a new pack of black shinyness to work with. (Although, when you get the hang of it, fifty houses - which is actually a seriously daunting total - is only a drop in the bucket.)
'Ok, look, try it again?' (Ganger, again)
Sorry, sorry. In his head, over and over, not even able to speak audibly. Sorry.
The other guys had all set off. Away along the road. The manager, too. Just Simon, and the ganger, on that original bit of pavement. Stood next to where the driver still had that fucking massive truck, stationery, on a rush hour road, because he couldn't move either, couldn't accompany the main gang. Because of Simon.
Where's all your learning now, little boy? Your reading, your writing, your arithmetic. Can you even count to fifty, so as to have that many stray bags back in control?
Put your hands on your head? Put your hands by your side? Or put your legs into gear, and fuck off home? To your nice family, your suburban security? Period house, garden?
The ganger knows nothing of that. Not yet, not today.
Simon and his new boss are possibly ten minutes into this part of the day, by the time Simon's first bin is actually approached. It's almost right next to the waiting truck, apart from the intervening and fairly wide pavement, which is mostly why no movement of the truck has yet happened. This bin needs to be dealt with. And what is this bin now appearing as? A metal cage, a bit like a dalek, designed to keep out foxes and squirrels but able to allow some sort of air flow, and with a kind of gate-come-door at the front so that 'people' can undo a hook and get at what's inside. So what you have to do is unhook that hook, open that 'gate', and pull out a black bag that is now full (or over full, meaning it won't budge, and is ripping and spilling and overflowing everywhere) but, at the same time, you have to flip up the dalek's head, the lid, and undo another catch which loosens the metal ring that's securing the aforementioned crap laden bag into place. (Anything could be in that bag, or by now abandoned beside it. Hot fat, ashes which will have melted the plastic's bottom, and invalidated the structural purpose - assuming the bag wasn't from one of those cheap batches, that never had any validity in the first place - or maybe the contents will include slidy oil, or maybe massive shards of glass, or bricks, or maybe a combination of all of these things...) But forget the exact oozing, maggot infested contents, for now. What Simon was grappling with, was the problem of getting two separate catches undone, at more or less the same time, whilst opening a 'gate' and lifting a lid, while over one arm he is trying to keep control of a bunch of already unruly and slidy black eels, one of which will have to be separated away from the others and slipped back under that gripping ring, for some householder to properly insert, ready for the next bunch of crap to be dropped into it.
Sure, these tasks could all be separated out, and Simon could take a couple of minutes over (just) emptying each bin, instead of (when he finally got the hang of it, some days later) a couple of seconds. But 400 bins (per person) times 2 minutes, divided by 60, comes to over 13. He doesn't have 13 hours, to do this all in. None of the guys have 13 hours, and that is why the time and motion guy, the manager from the council, is tagging along. He is wrestling with the problem as to how the new rounds have gone so drastically to hell, and how everything is not hours behind, or even days behind, but weeks behind.
(Once a dustbin round gets that far out of synch, it's an issue. It's an issue which the dustmen themselves can do almost nothing about, anymore, because every path they walk up will take them to a bin that is so out of control, so unhealthy, so ravaged and torn, so piled-beside-of, that all ye who enter will just abandon hope.)
This is back in the 1980s. Before wheelies, but after the era of the heavy (even when empty) metal bins that had actually needed to be physically carried to the cart, and upturned by hand, as in 'My Old Man's a Dustman'. (Although Simon's old man was a commuting professional. Working from home not an option, back then. Covid, never heard of. Other diseases, but not that one.)
Simon's first ever overloaded bin was not even a lone bin. It was in a fenced off area, in a bin collective, where there were about 20 of them, all excitedly waiting for release. Everyone, it turned out, had made a serious error (including the time and motion man, who was away along the highway with the other guys) because Simon was not going to have those daleks under control, their tummies sicked up, and everything out and then fed into the - at this point - shiny, modern truck, any time soon. So the truck is still waiting, still in rush hour traffic, with a yawning driver who is being paid for his (amazing, it turned out) driving skills, completely redundant. Everything, in fact, is redundant, including the ram at the back of the truck, which could shove even the most ludicrous types of debris up the chute and into the body of the 'cart' with incredible efficiency, but which is motionless. Simon isn't feeding it, the ganger isn't feeding it, the other guys making their way up the street aren't feeding it, so rubbish (in toppling bags, but also loose) is piling up all along the busy footways, by the kerbs, and out towards to the impatient cars... The truck, not available to eat it up. Because of Simon.
The time and motion guy wasn't anything like as clever as he thought he was, despite being the manager. He was the one that had suggested the starting point, for the day's work. Trying to sort things out. He was the one who had set off up the road with most of the crew, leaving Simon to deal with 20 bins on his own. Because of him, the manager, and his teachings, round 6 had got off to an even worse start than probably any of the other rounds that morning, where all of the others would have been behind too, but at least their strategy might have been better, left to itself. No way would any of the other rounds have started off, 8 in the morning (by the time they had driven to where they were going, from the yard) in a street on the main through route across a town centre, and right on the busiest of all of the walking approach routes to the trains.
Simon, months later, was a ganger himself. (Proud, by that time, instead of feeling society's contempt, the way he experienced it on that first day.) No fucking way would he, as a ganger, have made those same choices, once he understood. (And they weren't anyway, as indicated, the choices that even the existing ganger, himself, would have made.) Simon would have changed (and did change) a whole lot of things, including the start times, and certainly including the decisions about when, and how, to tackle the areas by the various local stations, or other periodically heaving access points. But he will only ever be able to work that stuff out once he has listened to what the guys around him are telling him, including learning from the experiences of that particular ganger - who, whilst Simon is trying and failing to deal with those 20 bins, is probably wishing he was dead. He gives in and helps, of course. Gangers always did.
Without his help, and guidance, Simon could have been in that compound for the rest of his life, never mind 13 hours.
_ _ _
I'm going to leave Simon there, for now. He'll be back, I think, because what the dustmen had to say (about The Falklands, about right to buy, about race, about education, about music, about drink, and about a whole lot of other things) is interesting. It deserves airing. How dusting fits into the world is crucial, despite that it may now be on wheels. A very visible element, in the 'winter of discontent': piles of those bags, where you can send in the army but the army are just, in many respects, in context, a bigger and fitter and more expensive bunch of Simons, with things they might better be doing if far away islands are going to get appropriated. And if Simon can be kept free of other baggage, then maybe he can write about just that one area of interest, with only little bits of stray voices sometimes creeping in (the way they always will, in all writing, but which may need to be controlled better, in my case.
Incidentally, I like that there's a singer called Eliza Doolittle. Interesting, that she apparently dropped the Doolittle part. But Eliza Doolittle, and 'My Fair Lady' are definitely going to get passingly written about, once this whole question of how to do it is sorted out. Eliza Doolittle had a dustman father. A proper one, with those old metal bins, that have inspired (I think) some seriously engaging pieces of art. I'm not a great art lover, but I know what I like, in that wardrobe. Art, though, definitely for another time.
_ _ _
Now let's meet Paul. (Again?) Paul is a different character to Simon, because he's emotionally fucked. He gets used as a narrator by someone who is even more fucked, to try and straighten things out. Someone who can't work out how to write, because it's fine to have a voice, but not a whole rampant gaggle of them, like the results of the tower of Babel.
Paul once played a song, as a part of a band, for his friend and his friend's wife (both of whom he loves) at their wedding. (He has a different song which he thinks of, when thinking of them, themselves, which is 'I Will Always Love You', as sung by Dolly Parton and not as rather more elaborately sung by Whitney. Obviously, that is not the only song that occurs to Paul, when thinking about a massive relationship which has endured years, but it is the one which his friends themselves like to go back to, when considering their marriage. They have it on a juke box, at their house. Honestly, a real juke box. With lots of songs on.)
Anyway, Paul played guitar at that wedding, their wedding, for the one song only. For the rest of the performance of 'his' band, he played drums. It was another first ever. Like, it could have been walking three baby steps to a chair, or learning his alphabet, or driving a car the opening few yards and then realising that stopping a car in control is far more difficult that getting one moving. (If you mess up the part about getting one moving, it just stalls, or jerks for a bit, and all is fine - assuming that you didn't try and pull out into a busy road, in rush hour.)
Paul, he has always had nothing but contempt for his performance, that day.
The song he played is sometimes regarded as a showpiece song. It includes a solo, which gets talked about. It is, however, a solo which is pretty much within the grasp of more or less any determined guitar player, assuming they happen to have a very musical sister who will spend hours and hours working out the exact notes, on the piano, from a slowed down LP, and writing them down on a stave. No 'You Tube', back then.
Paul is not great with staves, but he managed, and was hugely grateful, and would have been totally stuck otherwise. He learns mostly by ear, which is why he couldn't sort out the pattern of that solo for himself. It's too fast for his ear to deal with, and his ear is not totally reliable (where many, many musicians have ears which are better, including one of Paul's brothers, who again is for another time). But where this is getting to is that that solo isn't too fast to play, once you know the road map. And it's a whole lot easier on a guitar than, say, on a piano and in fact you can't possibly play it (perfectly) on a piano because a piano can't bend notes in order to move toward, and then reach, different notes. You can't take your finger off one note, on a piano, and in doing so automatically drop that note to a different one. Given those tricks (which Jimmy Page uses, too, very nicely, if he's not completely off his head) it's definitely doable, that solo. But this all then ties in to one of Paul's developed problems in looking back at this song, on that day (the first problem being that he is the kind of person who does do that kind of looking back, in the first place, where others may just move forwards). He thinks people may assume he is merely trying to big himself back up, after having apparently fallen right down. But he's never felt specially big, just decent. Paul can play a guitar, but then so can Ziggy, and Mick Ronson is in a different class, and Paul absolutely knows that and has no problem with the truth of that. Paul's former best friend could pay a guitar too, and make it ring like a bell. Go, Johnny. Let it rip! It's not about being specially Goode, or any of that. In the end, its about good old fucking up, when there was no need to, even in nursery type environments. But where, in those first times at trying things, it often happens.
You don't want to let friends down, in expensive marquees (and maybe a part of that might involve not being in a pub, getting pissed as a fart, during their actual speeches and risking being unable to stand, let alone play, so as to be able to perform what they'd asked - which had been practised, and which we (as a band, not as a collection of individuals) could have pulled off no problem, in theory, but which we didn't - when we lost the audience (one of whom, afterwards rather amusingly shouted out 'play 'Stairway to Heaven'?'). But we didn't let them down. They asked for it, and we played it (and my friend and founding bandmate Graham, as already stated, played it solidly - not as John Bonham, but as a perfectly competent drummer, having never drummed in his life) and the recording exists for the now long wed couple to listen to, and remember their day, and...
What the fuck is the problem, for Paul, in all of that? OMG. There isn't one!
Years later, Paul played some Brian Ferry style bass on 'Baby I Don't Care', and some kinda quirky but passionate rhythm/lead guitar on 'Blue Suede Shoes' and 'Sea Cruise', in that huge room where the juke box stands, and we (the whole band, including a piano player) fucking blew that room away. It wasn't musically brilliant, it wasn't hard stuff - it was just rehearsed, and tight, and we believed in it, and we had resolved a few other issues along the way. It got there, in the end. Why the agony, over the journey?
As late as last night, I think I finally put 'Stairway to Heaven' to bed, having made my way up to our current bedroom, along with my wife, happier. I still wrote about it this morning, though, but only, in part, so's I could send this to my sister. And, in part, because maybe I can further continue to see a way through, for me, for better writing, for later. And, relative to this skeleton, I can survey its wondrous bones, overwrite my contempt, and pour some rational pride on it. And, at the same time, I can marvel at what must have been going through my Grandad's mind, when he used to sit in his chair in the early mornings, bible to hand, contemplating his own wondrous crosses. I still need to deal with that hymn's line about gains and losses, in my head, but not now, when I (like Alice Cooper, in 'Hello Hooray') feel so (much more) strong.
It really doesn't matter, after all of this, what I actually think about Stairway to Heaven? - but now that I can get to it, I may as well make a comment or two. John Lennon (it may in fact have been Jasper Carrot, in a retrospective joke, but who knows for sure) supposedly once said that Ringo Starr was not the best drummer in the world, and not even the best drummer in 'The Beatles'. (Which didn't make Ringo a bad drummer, by any stretch.)
The same, for Stairway. As implied already, elsewhere, I think that 'Celebration Day', for example, is better. But that's an opinion that I haven't always dared to express, other than to people very close to me.
And maybe writing never could work, for me, if I never dared to say anything that indicated what I actually believed in.
Further down the line I will try and pay tribute to a man that my wife and I knew, who wrote plays, and who had already passed that particular milestone, by a long way.
Step, by step. To be a rock, but still to roll. Otherwise, you stay in the same place, for ever?

2023.03.21 13:58 theRetrograde VM - Decompressor hit a failure
My machine won't use memory swap. I haven't ever disabled it and I ensured that it was enabled last night. This was a problem for about 6 weeks early this year, but I reinstalled Rosetta and everything went back to normal. The machine worked fine for 3 - 4 weeks, but this weekend memory swap stopped working again and apps are crashing frequently.
Does anyone know why memory swap would just not be available at all?
I am not sure this is the proper place for it, but here is the EtreCheck report that shows the dozens of crashes yesterday.

2023.03.21 13:56 owls_ macOS update help
Hi! I need some advice. I have a MacBook Air 2020 (13in). Processor 1.1 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 8 GB memory. I'm currently running Catalina 10.15.7.
I am an editor and need to use Microsoft Word daily, and it's letting me (for now?) but says I can't update the app without macOS 11. Should I update to 11? Can I choose to update to 11 without going any further than that? I'm floundering here.
My hesitation is my experience with my last macbook. (Bought the macbook in 2014 and upgraded it probably too long later, 2019?) I upgraded and it made my laptop immediately hard to use and it really affected my work.
I don't do anything on my laptop except work, scroll through the internet, and sometimes watch tv shows. Nothing too fancy. Please let me know what you think I should do and be as clear as possible, since I'm not really well-versed in computer stuff.
Thanks in advance!
