I have a 1 year-old and a 4 year-old and I feel like I’m barely hanging on. These kids are smart, silly, a lot of fun, and super cute. They also have regular meltdowns, make the house a disaster, and give me no personal space.
I know that things don’t get easier, just different, but I feel like I’m hitting my max here. I’m so jealous of friends with no kids and find myself sad for friends who are pregnant. I never felt that way until recently. I’m not depressed, just burnt out.
Did anyone else’s experience of parenthood turn around when the kids were a little older? I need some hope!

I’m a single dad of 4: 14M, 12F, 9M and 9F with primary custody. We’ve/I’ve never been able to afford to buy a house in a decent school district and as such, have relied on an amazing K-8 charter school where our kids have thrived, truly. We live in a decent neighborhood in the city but the schools aren’t great. Our 14yo son got into an all boys college prep school for high school with almost a full scholarship. He is finishing up 8th grade at the charter school, where my younger children also attend.
I’m worried about the social divide. This school is located in a neighborhood we definitely could never afford to live in, and it seems that quite a bit of the students there are from that neighborhood. It’s a great school, academically challenging and athletically competitive (both of which was important to him). He has dreams of attending one of the service academies and many graduates of this school go on to do that each year.
We are middle class. I’m just worried about him feeling “less than” or out of place. He’s just so excited to go there and has been watching all the videos on YouTube that he can find about the school. I don’t want to ruin that for him. Black kids are also like 3% of the entire student population and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think about it (we are a Black family).

Hey folks. Love the game warts and all, but holy shit this might be the most bug-infested game I've played in a long time. (I'm playing on PC.)
Bugs were consistent (broken textures, funky movements, occasional graphical hiccups and framerate loss), but many were non-disruptive to gameplay and the ones that were weren't so constant the game was unplayable.
But now, it's like I got far enough in the game to where it's become completely unstable. It's right after I fought the Demon-Hulk, and doing pretty much anything causes a crash. Running around the Abbey? Crash. Opening a COIL? Crash. Upgrading cards in the Yard? Crash. Starting a mission? Crash. Changing outfits? Crash. Opening the game and clicking Continue? Crash.
And I feel like an EMT doing useless CPR, because hoo boy I've tried everything. Everything in the pinned bug post, everything in articles I've found online. Removing the 2K Launcher, changing Direct X version, verifying file integrity in Steam, turning all graphics settings down to medium and even minimum, and 2 dozen other tricks.
So despite wanting to see how it all ends, I must bid my time with Midnight Suns adieu. Extremely frustrating and I expected better of Firaxis/2K, but oh well. At least I got it on sale, and I hope the rest of you continue to have fun for me! Kinda reminded me of the old fun times I had with Metal Gear Acid.

For some context:
He and I have been married 3 years. Moved in together six months into the marriage. SO decided to bring in brother in law (who is 37, SO and I are 32) with him when we moved into our current house 2.5 years ago. Bil had been living with him after he lost his job, so it was logical he would come I guess, but SO never said a word about bringing him. Not to the landlady when we signed our lease and she specifically asked if anyone else will be living, not to me. When I found out through his mother and called him out for not telling me, he basically gaslit me for not asking and brought up other instances where I hadn't told him something (I once went to the dermatologist for skin care routine when we were married but still long distance and didn't tell him).
Since then things have not been great between us. When things are good, he's affectionate, loving, supportive of my interests and ambitions. But bil living with us has caused immense privacy issues which husband doesn't seem to understand. Bil pays no bills and this was also not discussed with me. But SO is rarely receptive to criticism. If I ever bring up an issue related to him, he will either pretend it's a non issue or deflect blame like the example in the first para. Rarely, if ever any apology.
Cut to yesterday. Mil has also been living with us for the last two months and she will be here another four months. It's caused so many space issues since she sleeps in the living room next to the dining table. I like working in the living room at night for some peace and quiet but make sure to turn off the light when she's sleeping. I just work in the dark but I'm far enough from her that the laptop light doesn't bother her.
I've been working late nights often recently because of hectic schedule. Husband asks me every day to work in the bedroom, but I tell him I prefer living room. Yesterday he told me the same thing except in a very enforcing way. And then took away my work laptop and wouldn't return it. I kept warning him to give it back saying I have work and it's unacceptable. I climbed towards him to grab it. Wouldn't give it. I started yelling that I have important deliverables and I need it. Wouldn't give it and held my wrist very tightly and called my name in a warning tone. I screamed to him that he was hurting me. This went on for awhile with me trying to take my laptop back..by now he had closed it so I might have lost unsaved work and I was making a presentation. Once when I was climbing over him trying to grab my laptop from him, he pushed me away with his leg on my waist. I got so angry I started saying the meanest things to him and I told him it's over between us. He said mean things back. He riled me up so much with the things he said I hit his arm.
He finally gave my laptop back but not before saying my working in the living room is a disturbance to his mother, although I specifically mentioned that I ensure the light is off and I just need to be alone when I work.
He clearly told his mother everything and made himself the victim. But I'm just shaken.

At my wife's baby shower we took a few photos to celebrate.
I smiled and said "oh cute" but I fucking hated every single one. I looked more pregnant than my wife. In the back of my mind I was contending with the reality that I was also about to be a father. How the hell was I supposed to lose weight with a newborn? Everything I've read and heard says that I wouldn't have time to lose weight or exercise or even sit down for a meal. I'd already tried to lose weight countless times in the past 5 years and failed every single time.
Part of me secretly hoped for the mythical "parent mode" where I'd be so inspired by my Childs birth I'd lose weight and get in shape. At that point it's all I could do was hope for a miracle.
Well, that miracle never came. My daughter was born and our lives were thrown into chaos for that first month or so. I still wanted to be healthier for my daughter but it wasn't spurning any serious life changes until one day when we were discussing what she would be eating when she started eating solids. I realized we needed to start eating healthier foods in the house at a consistent rate. Our usual week schedule would be healthy breakfasts and lunches, a few home cooked meals during the week and eating out the rest of the time. I knew it wasn't great, but I just figured it probably wasn't that bad compared to most people. From my countless other weight-loss attempts, I knew I was decent and keeping my calories under 2,000 during the week but figured I just barely bumped that on the weekends (which I conveniently never tracked because it was too embarrassing).
Knowing she had to eat healthier was the seed that started it all. I started with small goals, just eating better. I made it a point to eat home cooked meals every day of the week and only go out to eat 1 or 2 times on the weekend. Then I started counting calories, like I had so many times in the past. I was sure I would fail this time but I tried anyways. My biggest goal was to actually count what I was eating and not allow myself to skip weekends just because I knew it was embarrassing.
For calorie counting the biggest change I made from times past was forgiveness. It's absolutely a personal thing which will be different for every person but for me I couldn't stand when I failed. One bad weekend would reset the entire process, I'd completely fall off and it'd be months before I tried again (and the cycle continued). I realized I needed to actually brush off bad meals or days. Like, not let them devour my mindset for days. When we were dealing with the first months of my daughters sleep schedule, I would frequently get upset at myself because I got upset at her, an infant, for not sleeping well. I knew it was stupid to feel any type of way towards a baby like that so it became a self-hate cycle where I'd rage at myself for feeling like that and I'd spiral for a few days. Then finally I actually just forgave myself, truly, for feeling upset during one episode and just asked my wife for help and then did something else. It wasn't the end of my anger but I did realize that true forgiveness was healing. I applied the same thing to my eating and started to find it much easier to bounce back.
Another change I had, which I wish I had a nice anecdote for how I implemented it, was controlling my cravings. I'm an absolute treat monster. I love any and every type of treat. I would never buy them because it would be catastrophic in the house when one evening I was bored and would just demolish whatever we had. Once I had my CICO in play, I decided "fuck these treats" and started actively looking for situations to challenge myself to not eat them. Girl Scout season is usually a mess but I was able to actually have boxes of cookies in my house and not eat them, or eat a single cookie within my budget and then stop. I started to relish the power dynamic shifting to where I knew I was in control and not the treat.
Last piece was working out. I know CICO is the most important aspect, but exercise can't be left completely out of the equation if only because of the mental boosts it gives. I started extremely small. 10 min workouts with a kettlebell, 3x a week. I did that until it was routine to be outside for those 10 min. Then I started adding onto it with the C25K running plan. I'd do the days run and then a little weights after. Maybe 30-40 min total. The actual calories being lost was negligible but the mental energy boost I got from having completed even the smallest workout was enough to help me see through the day. I also started to love being able to eat an extra 100 or 200 calories in the form of some snack - cheetos or whatever current craving I was having.
After a couple months I graduated from the C25K program and started running 3 5Ks a week. At this point I switched to a more running focused workout as I started to get more enjoyment from that. In the last month I've started doing a half marathon training program which has me exercising 5x a week. it's perfect.
Today was the day I finally was under 200 lbs. It look longer than I expected because in the first few months I dropped weight like crazy but recently it's slowed to only being about 1lb a week. I'm taking solace in the fact that the weight loss is consistent and the lifestyle I live is sustainable long term.

Grand Theft Auto is no stranger to add-on content, but the latest in a long line of leaks suggests Rockstar might be taking a bit of a different approach for the long-awaited sequel — splitting up parts of the game to repackage as DLC.
The rumor comes from established Rockstar leaker Tez2, who says Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently targeting a release in holiday 2024 “which has been pushed back multiple times.” Tez2 adds the game may be pushed back again, into to 2025.
Furthermore, Tez2 claims Rockstar is considering breaking up the game’s content into post-launch DLC, to ensure the game can meet a release date. If GTA 6 launches in 2024, it will be a whopping 11 years since the last release in the franchise.
This wouldn’t be an unprecedented move from Rockstar, considering the approach the studio has taken with GTA Online, incrementally releasing massive updates and new story content. Notably, however, GTA 5 didn’t feature any additional story content, just updates to the Online portion of the game.
GTA Online GTA Online has managed to stay relevant for a decade with consistent updates, and it makes sense Rockstar would pivot to that same approach to single-player content.ROCKSTAR Taking this approach would let Rockstar more easily hit whatever internal timeline is established for GTA 6, and provide a road map of content to make post-launch more appealing to players. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time this kind of rumor has been brought up by Tez2, as last August the leaker reported GTA 6 would “expand over time,” adding on new cities after launch.
The easiest approach would be to create content that ties into both the single-player and multiplayer aspects of GTA 6, and creating new cities in-game could do just that. New locations could be fully playable in the online portion, while also adding on hand-crafted stories and missions. This would allow Rockstar to continue the overwhelming success of GTA Online, while story content could help attract new players or those that might not care to engage with multiplayer.
This tactic of splitting up elements of the game as DLC is something Nintendo has been using for years, to great success. Mario Strikers: Battle League, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Nintendo Switch Sports, have all seen scheduled add-ons for new content, even years after their initial release. At this point, it’s not clear how much of a live-service element there will be for GTA 6, but this Nintendo-like approach would allow Rockstar to retain players who are primarily interested in single-player experiences.
GTA 5 Although GTA 5 never received single-player DLC, Rockstar’s director of design said in a 2017 interview the studio would “love to do more single-player add-ons for games in the future.”ROCKSTAR Nintendo stands apart from other developers, though, in that typically these updates are free or bundled with a Switch Online subscription. It’s a smart move, as games like Mario Strikers, which would typically have a very short shelf life, suddenly provide players with more of a reason to stick with it for the long haul. It also allows Nintendo to continue to sell its older, first-party titles with minimal discounts.
There’s no video game property in existence bigger than Grand Theft Auto, and a report in 2020 estimated GTA Online made a staggering $600 million in 2019. Even in 2023, it continues to hold an enviable place in the sales charts month after month. The popularity of GTA Online has only continued to increase over the years, and that mainstream success is exactly what’s poised to make GTA 6 such a massive success.
Breaking up content into DLC lets Rockstar bring GTA 6 back into the conversation every six months, year, or whatever release timeline suits the studio and the community best. Seeing a big GTA 6 update in a State of Play or other presentation will likely bring thousands of players flocking back to the game, and considering GTA 5 and GTA Online are still alive and kicking a decade later, it’s easy to say Rockstar is hoping for lightning to strike twice with GTA 6.
