Looking for a waterproof softside gear bag
I want a waterproof gear bag to store miscellaneous gear for longer fishing excursions. I tried a 22L hard sided waterproof box (Magellan Outdoors Pro 22 L Waterproof Gear Box) but it's hard sides and footprint don't make efficient use of the space in the rear of my Old Town PDL 106. That's why I want some kind of sturdy soft-side gear bag to keep misc equipment. My largish tackle bag takes up half the space of the rear area so this gear bag would go towards the rear, bungied in place back by the rudder. I have the thinner gear bags where you roll the top down but I'm looking for something more substantial/heavy duty.
Saw this on Amazon - might do the trick, it's a backpack but I could deal with that. Thought I'd ask what others are using in case there was a good kayak-specific solution. I'm aiming for 22 to 45 L size.

2023.01.25 10:05 jab136 A deeper look into the 83 tickers that halted with in the first minute of trading yesterday (1/24/2023). And whether or not the publicly available data (daily price range) supports that they even should or could have halted. (Part 2/2 because of character limit)

For those who missed it, here is part 1, I had to split it up because it was too long. Part 1 goes into why I am looking at this, how I am looking at this, and some TLDR of patterns I found in the data below. It also has the 35 more suspicious tickers as well as the 1 ticker that was just plain odd.
Here is the rest of the DD that I promised in my post earlier looking into the extremely odd halt behavior across quite a few large cap stocks at market open yesterday/today (Tuesday Jan 24, 2023). This took a bit longer to write than expected, so the day that you are seeing this is likely not to be consistent between people or even within this post, whenever I say either "Today" or "Yesterday" I mean 1/24/2023.
Now, I am going to list off all of the tickers that were halted during the "glitch" and give some more data about them. Some company or ticker names have been shortened for formatting, but the tickers are all there if you want to cross check. During the first 15 minutes of trading, a large cap company needs a movement of +/-10% or more to halt (we are in this range), a smaller company needs +/-20% (pretty sure towel is in this range), and a penny stock needs +/-40%. For all of my feasibility calculations for halts, I will default to assuming a +/-10% range unless I comment otherwise.
For those who haven't seen my posts for the last 6 months, I have been tracking Limit Up Limit Down Halts market wide since the end of July I have a few more important posts buried in the first bit of that post going back a bit further. My first post on this topic was my analysis of every stock that had even a single LULD halt between Jan 27 and Jan 29 of 2021. I figured at the time that I might be able to find other tickers possibly in the swap basket.
A big issue that I have started to run into with all of my posts recently is just the honestly quite large task of converting my excel spreadsheets into a digestible format, and if any apes have skills in web development and would like to help me make a website that automatically scrapes data from a couple other websites and then compiles it into a readable format automatically that would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, I think that gets all of the intro out of the way, let's get into the data now
First, let's get into the more simple facts of what happened and was recorded on the NYSE halt tracking page
  1. There were 78 different tickers that all halted at exactly 09:30:15 EST (15 seconds after market open)
  2. there were another 5 tickers that halted in the first minute of trading, the first ticker to halt later than 09:30:15 was swapcorn, which halted at 09:30:16
  3. LULD halts will almost always be either exactly 5 or 10 minutes long (based on my data going back to August 2019), out of the 83 tickers that halted in the first minute of trading, only 10 of them had an even 5 or 10 minute duration, the remaining 73 tickers had seemingly random durations, mostly between 5 and 10 minutes, but quite a few were longer than 10 minutes.
here is the excel spreadsheet that I used in case anyone wants to check it. Column's A-H are a copy and paste from the .csv off the NYSE halt page, but sorted according to start time. Column K subtracts the start time from the end time in order to determine the duration of the halt, Column L checks that the start and end dates match (not an issue here, but I have seen it before). Column O is a manual entry of the market cap of that company from yahoo finance, and column Q is a manual entry of the country where the company is headquartered.
I manually calculated maximum percentages for each ticker based on the daily price range from yahoo finance using the following equations
These equations will always return a smaller absolute percentage for downward movement for downward movement than for upward movement because the denominator in the downward movement is always going to be higher than the denominator of the upward movement. Also, this is literally the largest percentage that could have happened if the entire day's action happened in the first minute of trading, it is likely that the companies didn't actually hit the percentages posted in the first minute, but they could not have possibly get higher percentages than reported here.
Now to summarize what is in the remainder of this post
  1. Oil and Gas was the most common type of company to show up (16 out of 83 halts in the first minute were on companies in that area
  2. Financial companies were tied with Oil and Gas (also 16 out of 83 halts)
  3. The combined market cap of all the companies that were halted in the first minute of trading was 6.23 Trillion dollars
  4. 69 (heh, nice) out of the 83 companies are based in the US, but the other 14 were spread across the UK (3) Taiwan (1), Canada (3), Switzerland (2), Chile (1), Denmark (1), Japan (1), China (1) and Ireland (1)
  5. A considerable number of the tickers (35/83) either would have had to go from their lowest price of the day to the highest price of the day, or literally could not have halted in either direction because there isn't a large enough difference in the reported numbers on yahoo
  6. There was a single company out of the 83 where both of the percentage calculations returned very even fractions (1/2 and 1/3, no rounding on either) which just seemed super odd. Additionally, I am pretty sure I remember some talk on the OG sub after the sneeze about that company, also they literally develop software for the more shadowy 3 letter agencies in the US government so there is also that...
OK, so here are all the tickers that halted during the glitch, that probably shouldn't have halted based on their price ranges over the entire trading day. The rest of the tickers are in part 2 of this post
All of the following are formatted as follows
Verizon (VZ) - telecommunications - US - halt started at 09:30:15, and lasted 8 minutes and 8 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $39.63, opened today at $38.69, and had a range between $32.76 and $44.73, but neither of the prices in that range show up on the actual ticker on the site. If these were within 5 minutes of each other they are either a movement of -27% or +37%, either of which would have triggered a LULD halt (halt bands at that time would have been +/-10%). The current market cap of Verizon as of 01/20 was 167.99 Billion.
AT&T (T) - telecommunications - US - halt started at 09:30:15, and lasted 7 minutes and 49 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $19.10, opened today at $18.97, and had a range between $15.15 and $22.84, again neither price in the range show up on the actual ticker, but they are far enough apart to have triggered a LULD halt in either direction. The current market cap of AT&T as of 01/20 was 137.05 Billion.
Raytheon Technologies Corporation (RTX) - US - Aerospace/defense - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 9 minutes and 17 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $96.25, opened today at $108.84 and had a daily range between $94.02 and $108.84 (opening price). A halt in either direction would have been feasible with this range (+15.76% or -13.62%). The current market cap of RTX is 138.71 Billion as of 01/20.
The Mosaic Company (MOS) - Basic Materials (agriculture) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 13 minutes and 33 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $48.35, opened today at $47.75, and had a daily range between $42.30 and $50.40 although neither of those show up on the chart. A halt in either direction would have been feasible with this range ( +19.15% or -16.07%). The current market cap of MOS is 16.35 Billion as of 01/20.
Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC) - financial services (bank) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 12 minutes and 10 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $45.03, opened today at $44.91, and had a daily range between $40.01 and $45.20, although the chart doesn't show any prices below around $44.50. A halt in either direction would have been feasible with this range (+12.97% or -11.48%). The current market cap of this ticker is 163.84 Billion as of 01/20.
Wells Fargo & Co. Depositary Shares, each representing a 1/1000th interest in a share of Non-Cumulative Perpetual Class A Preferred Stock, Series D (WFC PRD) - same as previous - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 16 minutes and 27 seconds. I am pretty sure that this stock is listed as WFC-PD on yahoo finance, the range for that ticker on yahoo finance was a close yesterday of $19.21, open today at $23.32 and a full range of $19.08 and $23.32 (open price). A halt in either direction would have been feasible with this range (+22.22% or -18.18%). The current market cap of this ticker is not available on yahoo finance.
PPL Corporation (PPL) - Utilities (regulated electric) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 12 minutes and 25 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $29.32, opened today at $29.18, and had a full range of $24.89 to $29.56. The lower price is not even remotely shown on the ticker. A halt in either direction would have been feasible with this range (+18.76% or -15.80%). The current market cap of this ticker was 18.67 Billion as of 09/30/2022 (the most recent market cap is not available).
Union Pacific Corp. (UNP) - Railroads - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 9 minutes and 30 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $210.13, opened today at $223.44 and had a daily range between $201.00 and $235.20. A halt in either direction would have been feasible with this range (+17.01% or -14.54%). The current market cap of this ticker was 128.28 Billion as of 1/20.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Companty Ltd. (TSM) - Taiwan - technology (semiconductors) - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 10 minutes and 52 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $95.66, opened today at $98.00 and had a range between $93.81 and $106.43, although there don't appear to be any prices above $95 on the ticker. A halt in either direction would have been feasible with this range (+13.45% or -11.86%). The current market cap of this ticker was 429.48 Billion as of 1/20.
Newmont Corporation (NEM) - Basic materials (metal mining, primarily gold) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 13 minutes and 23 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $53.63, opened today at $51.12 and had a daily range of $53.04 to $60.08, again, the opening price isn't in the reported range. The reported range would allow for a halt in either direction (+13.27% or -11.72%), but the reported opening price would raise those to (+17.53% or 14.91%). The current market cap of this ticker was 42.34 Billion as of 1/20.
Transocean LTD. (RIG) - Energy (oil/gas) - Switzerland - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 7 minutes and 2 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $6.23, opened today at $5.59 and had a daily range of $5.50 to $6.31 which does include the opening price. The reported range would allow for a halt in either direction (+14.70% or 12.84%). The current market cap of this ticker was 4.34 Billion as of 1/20.
PETROLEO BRASILEIRO S.A.-PETROBRAS ADS (PBR) - Energy (Oil/Gas) - Chile - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 10 minutes and 6 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $11.73, opened today at $14.46 and had a daily range between $10.59 and $12, which doesn't include the opening price so something is probably off there. The reported range would allow for a halt in either direction (+13.31% or -11.75%), however using the opening price increases both of those drastically to (+36.54% or -26.76%). The current market cap of this ticker was 71.54 Billion as of 1/20.
Magellan Midstream Partners, L.P. (MMP) - Energy (Oil/Gas) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted exactly 5 minutes (first one on this list with a normal duration). According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $54.07 and opened today at $60.55. The reported daily range was $52.00 to $60.55 (open), but the visual ticker doesn't show prices much above $54. The reported range would allow for halts in either direction (+16.44% or - 14.12%). The current market cap of this ticker was 10.86 Billion as of 1/20. This ticker had a normal duration, and announced a dividend before market open, so it is possible this is a legitimate halt, however the fact that the actual price range isn't visible on the ticker makes me a bit suspicious still.
Valero Energy Corporation (VLO) - Energy (Oil/gas) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 10 minutes and 15 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $143.08, opened today at $146.56, and had a daily range between $141.85 and $160.16, even though it visually doesn't look like it got close to $140 and definitely doesn't look like it even broke $150 let alone $160 on the chart. The reported range would allow for a halt (+12.91% or -11.43%). The market cap of this ticker was 55.03 Billion as of 1/20.
QuantumScape Corporation (QS) - Consumer Cyclical (lithium batteries for cars) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 9 minutes and 6 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $8.26, opened today at $8.10, and had a daily range between $6.49 and $8.31. The daily range would allow for a halt in either direction even if it is in the +/-20% category (+28.04% or -21.90%). The market cap of this ticker was 3.37 Billion as of 1/20. The first "article" on yahoo news is 5 days old and is explicitly warning against a short squeeze play, so this could be worth a second look.
Altria Group Inc. (MO) - Tobacco - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 7 minutes and 35 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $44.81, opened today at $42.72 and had a daily range between $44.72 (open) and $51.57. The daily range would allow for a halt in either direction (+15.09% or -13.11%). The market cap of this ticker was $80.54 Billion as of 1/21.
McDonald's Corporation (MCD) - Resturaunt - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 10 minutes and 12 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $269.29 and opened at $236.77, with a daily range between $236.77 (open) and $270.16. The daily range would allow for a halt in either direction (+14.10% or -12.36%). the market cap of this ticker was 196.71 Billion as of 1/21.
MP Materials Corp. (MP) - rare earth element mining - US - Halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 6 minutes and 41 seconds. According to yahoo finance, it closed yesterday at $30.78, opened today at $30.65, and had a daily range between $27.31 and $30.65 (open). The daily range would allow for a halt in either direction (+12.23% or -10.90%). The market cap of this ticker was 5.36 Billion as of 1/20.
Western Alliance Bancorporation (WAL) - Financial Services (Bank) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 13 minutes and 32 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $67.79, the opening price was $61.31, the official range from yahoo was $61.31 (open) to $68.72. This range would allow for a halt in either direction (+12.09% or -10.78%). This ticker had a market cap of 7.22 Billion as of 1/19.
Neuberger Berman Next Generation Connectivity Fund Inc. (NBXG) - no information about sector or industry - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 6 minutes and 36 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $10.00, the opening price today was $7.70, and the daily range was $7.70 (open) to $9.97. This would allow for a halt in either direction even at the +/-20% requirement that I suspect the 0.77 Billion market cap puts it at (+29.48% or -22.77%)
NIO Inc. American Depositary Shares, each representing one Class A ordinary share (NIO) - Auto Manufacturer - China - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 8 minutes and 7 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $12.06, the opening price was $14.36 and the daily range was $11.06 to $14.36 (open). This range would allow for a halt in either direction (+29.84% or -22.98%). This company had a market cap of 18.13 Billion as of 1/21
Nike, Inc. (NKE) - Consumer Cyclical (footwear) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 9 minutes and 27 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $128.29, the opening price today was $123.58, and the daily range was $112.36 to $128.01. This range would allow for a halt in either direction (+13.93% or -12.23%). This company had a market cap of 196.33 Billion as of 1/20.
Trane Technologies plc. (TT) - Industrials (heating, cooling, ventilation, etc.) - Ireland - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 15 minutes and 31 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $170.95, the opening price was 173.11 and the daily range was $169.71 to $194.66, although the chart on yahoo doesn't look like there was a price above around $175. The reported range would allow for halts in either direction (+14.70% or -12.82%). The market cap of this company was 39.12 Billion as of 1/20.
Occidental Petroeum Corporation (OXY) - Energy (Oil/Gas) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 11 minutes and 4 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $66.50, the opening price was $58.56, and the reported range was $58.56 (open) to $67.46. The chart on yahoo doesn't visibly show a price below $64. The reported range would allow for halts in either direction (+15.20% or -13.19%). the market cap of this company was 60.82 Billion as of 1/21.
VICI Properties Inc. Common Stock (VICI) - Real Estate (hospitality/entertainment) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 8 minutes and 35 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $33.64, the opening price was $29.91, and the daily range was $28.49 to $34.12. The chart on yahoo doesn't visibly show a price below about $32. The reported range would allow for halts in either direction (+19.76% or -16.50%). The market cap of this company was 34.72 Billion as of 1/21.
COHEN & STEERS QUALITY INCOME REALTY FUND, INC. (RQI) - Financial Services (asset management) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 6 minutes and 11 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $13.00, the opening price today was $13.09, and the daily range was $11.44 to $13.11. The chart on yahoo doesn't visibly show a price below $12.33. The reported range would allow for halts in either direction assuming a +/-10% requirement (+14.60% or -12.74%). The market cap of this ticker was 1.75 Billion as of 1/17.
Public Storage Depositary Shares Each Representing 1/1000 of a 3.875 Cumulative Preferred Share of Beneficial Interest, Series N (PSA.PRN) - Real Estate (storage) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 5 minutes and 55 seconds. Yahoo doesn't have this exact ticker, but I am assuming that it is listed on yahoo under PSA-PN which had a closing price of $17.99 yesterday, an opening price of $22.46 today, and a daily range of $18 to $22.46 (open). The reported range would allow for halts in either direction (+24.78% or 19.86%). Due to the type of security that this is, it doesn't have a market cap, however the larger company (PSA) has a market cap of 50.78 Billion.
Uber Technologies (UBER) - Technology (software) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 10 minutes and 8 seconds. The closing price yesterday was $30.53, the opening price was $25.71, and the reported range was $25.71 (open) to $31.20. The reported range would allow for halts in either direction (+21.35% or -17.60%). This company had a market cap of 60.55 Billion as of 1/20.
U.S. Bancorp Depositary shares, Each representing a 1/1000th interest in a share of series L Non0Cumulative Perpetual Preferred Stock (USB-PRQ) - Financial services (bank) - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 8 minutes and 42 seconds. Yahoo doesn't have the exact ticker, but I am pretty sure it is listed as USB-PQ on yahoo so that is the data I will use here. Previous close price was $18.20, open price was $23.16, daily range was $18.11 to $23.16 which would allow for a halt in either direction (+27.89% or -21.80%). Due to the type of security here, there isn't a market cap, but USB has a market cap of $71.10 Billion as of 1/19
Teladoc Health, Inc. (TDOC) - Healthcare - US - halt started at 09:30:15 and lasted 5 minutes and 44 seconds. Previous close price was $27.66, open price was $28.18, daily range was $27.10 to $31.45. This price range would allow for a halt in either direction (+16.12% or 13.88%). The company has a market cap of 5.91 Billion as of 1/21.
There were 18 more halts after PBF, however 17 of the 18 were either 5 or 10 minutes exactly, and the 1 that isn't a normal duration happened at nearly 11:00:00 with several normal halts in between, so I will just cover the last 18 tickers in my weekend wrapup.

2022.12.19 07:05 Guilty_Chemistry9337 I Saw Three Ships

Before dawn, the people of the town got to work as usual, despite the holiday. It wasn’t a big town, way up in Jutland, on the side of a low but steep hill, leading right down into a small but well-protected harbor. It was bigger than when it had been a sleepy little fishing village. Now it was growing up, as a small but proud member of the Hansa. Its sailors were now traveling all over the world, and had earned a proud reputation as stalwart and able seamen.
Its port was known for its depths. 100 gun ships-of-the-line could, and did, berth right against her docks and not worry about beaching. Once, years ago, a local young man, the son of a wealthy merchant, had sounded the depths of the bay with a heavy stone and long rope. It turned out that the steep slope just kept going right down under the water. That man had gone on to Copenhagen and university, to be a professor of some sort, and had never returned. That was fine enough for the townsfolk. They were a superstitious folk, and felt the depths of the sea were best left unknown and unexplored. Still, a model of the bay, water removed, that the man had made still sat gathering dust on a shelf in the City Hall.
As more and more of the town’s residents awoke, some made small gestures out of respect for the holiday. Mothers added a bit of nutmeg to the breakfast porridge. Old retired sailors poured themselves a half ration of rum. The children of the well-to-do families each enjoyed a ripe orange, for a trading vessel up from Tripoli had made call the week previous.
Overall, though, the mood of the town was melancholy and stifled. Three ships from the town, three ships that had left port long ago, were now long overdue. Three ships, full of men and lads of the town, were feared sunk.
The first had been the Drage, set out to India and points East. That had been during the July of the year previous, when the weather was fine and the seas were calm. The second had been the Dulle Griet, set out in October of that same year, bound for the Spanish colonies around the horn. The third, Zwarte Piet, off to the British colonies in America, this last January. All told, 148 men shipped out, boys, greenhorns, and mates. They left behind 112 mothers, 123 wives, 422 children, with 9 on the way, along with uncountable sisters, cousins, aunts, nieces, lovers and sweethearts. All of whom were fearing their loss to one degree or another.
It wasn’t just their lateness that hung over the town like a storm cloud. There had been three great storms to blow through in recent months. Each one of them could have sunk one or all of the tardy ships.
The first had been in October, just a great powerful blow that had come from the Southwest, warm air from far away. They said that steeples and clock towers had blown over in England and Northern France, killing parsons and public alike. Fishermen caught in the North Sea had claimed that the waves had piled up so high, with a clear blue sky above, that they almost seemed to have glowed a queer emerald green. At least those who’d made it back made that claim.
The second had been in November, from the West. Wild winds had blown every which way, and the rain fell so hard for three days that some worried it was the second deluge. This time the fisherman had nearly exhausted themselves with bailing. The winds and clouds had made finding their way back to port a living nightmare. Dikes had failed in the Low Countries, and those who hadn’t drowned had their farms turned to swamps and acres of mud.
The third had been earlier this December. It had been a terrible blizzard straight out of the North. For two days the townsfolk could hardly make it up or down the steep cobblestone streets without getting lost in the whiteout. Those who lingered outdoors were in danger of losing their earlobes or finger tips to frostbite. After the storm were three more days of horrible cold. Breath turned to ice crystals with each exhalation. The harbor was in danger of freezing over. Then it was gone, as fast as it had come. The fisherman of the North Sea who’d been out when the storm hit did not come back to report their experience. Only the timbers of their little boats washed up on shore. One or all of the three overdue ships could have been caught in one or all of those storms. The mood of the town was still dark, on christmas day, in the morning.
In the middle of the morning, when the last little child was roused from his slumber, and the last of the crusty old salts had worked the stiffness out of his joints, the dark clouds in the sky parted. The sea mist lifted, and there out on the distant horizon were three ships a-sailing, heading straight for home. All of their sails, from mizzen skysail to flying jib were unfurled and they seemed to gleam white in the newly woken sunlight.
Only a few of the townsfolk noticed the sails at first, but word spread faster than man could run. Shouts roared up the steep narrow streets as fast as reflex and sound. Many weren’t sure they could believe their ears, but then the church bells high on the hill began to ring, the whole town was soon overfilled with joy. Mothers hurried their children into thick winter clothing, preparing to go see their fathers off the gangplanks. Old salts treated themselves to a second half-allowance of rum. And then one full ration, because they only had so many years left to enjoy it.
The townsfolk, all bundled up, bustled out into the street, asking their neighbors if their hopes were true. Then they simply looked for themselves, for the streets all had a fine view of the harbor. Sure enough, steady and true, the Zwarte Piet, the Dulle Griet, and the Drage were in the harbor and making straight for the docks. The people started making their way down the winding streets, housing and buildings here and there temporarily blocking their views of the beloved ships. All were asking questions and chatting with their neighbors.
So whither had the three ships been all this time? It was a question on all their lips this Christmas day in the morning, though none had known the truth.
The last ship to leave had the shortest journey. Zwarte Piet made her call in the Massachusetts colony in America, in the town of Kingsport. Formerly Konigshaven before the English had annexed it. Formerly Kungensham before the Dutch had annexed it. The name of the land before the Swedish colonized it is lost to history, and for good reason. At first the sailors of the Zwarte Piet were lost in heavy fog, and spent many days with their sails reefed. Finally, a greenhorn in the crow’s nest spotted a light, coming from a house atop the strange tall hill just outside of town. The fog soon parted and the ship was able to dock.
The second ship, the Dulle Griet, made for the relatively predictable waters of the Strait of Magellan, yet a strange strong wind blew them off course, and she found herself rounding Cape Horn the hard way, through the roaring forties. Many days later, battered and bruised, she found herself becalmed in the southern waters of the Pacific, and remarked on how apt Magellan’s name for the ocean had been. They repaired their sails and timbers, their bruises healed and their appetites resumed, and they made for the nearest possible port. They finally tied up in the misty city of Xebico. Conquered by Spaniards, who now ruled as the elite, the bones, the famous stonework of the city had been built by the skilled hands of native masons. In scale they could have been described as cyclopean, but in form consistent with polygonal dry ashlar jointed stones of the finest craftsmanship. This extended all the way from the breakwaters down at the quay, to the stone fencing surrounding the particularly singular cemetery on the hill.
The first ship to leave and with the longest journey, the Drage, had meant to find a harbor in India. She had provisioned in Zanzibar, then headed off to the East. Yet at some point in the middle of the Indian Ocean she had been struck by a terrible cyclone. By an unholy miracle she had found her way into the storm’s eye, and from there lingered within its confines for days. All bearings were lost, as her men struggled with every ounce of strength to stay away from the eye walls. At night, only the most seasoned of her crew could recognize the stars visible through the narrow eye of the storm. When the sun was up, strange colors ranging from turquoise to bizarre maroons manifested in the colossal swells or blowing mists, all originating from the sun’s obscured light, which could be discerned by its presence but not its direction.
Finally, before dawn on the fourth day, the storm dissipated. The sea was calm. After a passing swarm of colorful butterflies landed on the ship, and then flew off again, the men of the Drage felt the sensation of standing on their heads, followed by the sound of a trillion buzzing black flies. When they awoke, they found themselves in the beds of the hotels and inns and brothels of legendary Carcosa. The Drage was secure, tied up at the docks on that famed city's legendary lake. The crew, in this dreamy land, made by while the skipper and the supercargo went about their dark business.
The ever-growing masses of the little town in Jutland made their way down the hill, to the docks, where they found the ships already moored, this Christmas day in the morning. In their excitement, they hadn’t noticed the strange expressions of the dock crew, who had been closest when the ships approached, and had been the ones to tie the knots on the dock lines. They hadn’t noticed either, how the very same dock crew had been attempting to flee the docks, and were frantic to fight against the surging crowd pushing in the other direction. No, they had been content to wipe their children’s noses, or pinch their cheeks to make them ruddy, or to gossip with the other man’s wife marching next to them. What was on those ships all three, they asked, on Christmas day in the morning?
The Zwarte Piet had her hold full of frankincense, brimming over into the bilge space, and every available drawer and container. The strange and magical incense was made from a tree sap that grew in the deserts of East Africa and far corners of Arabia. By no rights should it have been found in the ports of New England, though ports were always a strange place, where commodities from all over the Great Round could be found for sale. Stranger still was the volume. Tiny amounts of Frankincense were worth kings’ ransoms. A merchantman full of the stuff was worth more than commoners knew numbers for.
On the Dulle Griet, there was myrrh. Rarer still than frankincense, myrrh had a similar origin, the sap of a kind of thorny bush from Arabia. No doubt some trading vessel from Jeddah or Aden had made her port of call there, in Xebico, and unloaded her cargo. The supercargo of the Dulle Griet had no doubt fetched a better price than the middle men of Xebico.
As for the cargo of the Drage, no, it was not gold. It was something far more valuable, and far more dangerous. Her hold contained only a single book. A massive book, bought with the dearest of prices, in dark Carcosa. As dark as its cover and binding. It was a massive thing, a grimoire as massive as the table that bore it. On her return journey, the crew of the Drage had avoided its presence the way feral animals avoid a campfire. For they were illiterate, and only the Drage’s captain, and two of her passengers, understood the book’s contents and its import.
There was an awkward moment as the townsfolk gathered on the dock. They looked to and fro, but found that the usual dock workers seemed to have evaporated into the crowd. The Zwarte Piet had a gangplank already positioned and mounted, though there was no one to give them permission to board, neither stevedore nor ship's officer.
Anxiousness, loneliness, other emotions too uncouth to mention, finally overwhelmed the wives and they rushed their way up the gangplanks. Confusion overtook them, everywhere they looked, every hatch they opened, they could not find their men. The Zwarte Piet had docked, but there wasn’t a soul aboard.
The wives of the crew of the Dulle Griet found a similar absence of their husbands, though it was a very different experience. The ship laid low in the water with the weight of all the life she carried. When they opened the doors and hatches they found sea life in every crevice and corner, as if the ship had spent years under the sea. Here were giant barnacles, and clams. Seaweed, like green mermaid’s hair, hung from the rafters. There were starfish uncountable, purple and gold and orange, some giant forms had over twenty arms. Sea urchins, big and small, threatened with their spines in every direction. In the captain’s quarters, across his desk, was a devilfish of gigantic proportions. Its grayish purplish tentacles writhed and twisted towards the women who’d dare venture this far.
No townsfolk boarded the Drage, no. When the gangplank was fixed, her passengers descended and disembarked. She had borne the Beast, the Antichrist, and His Lady.
And then all the church bells of all the world did ring
And the heavens themselves opened up, and all of the angels screamed.
On Christmas Day, in the morning.

If you’re gardenless, you can still support insect health. Try replacing white outdoor lights, which interfere with many insects’ feeding and breeding patterns. White lights also lure insects into swarms, where they are vulnerable to predators. Yellow bulbs or warm-hued LEDs don’t have these effects.
Another easy project is using scrap wood and packing materials to create simple “hotels” for bees or ladybugs, making sure to carefully sanitize them between seasons. Easiest of all, provide water for insects to drink — they’re adorable to watch as they sip. Replace standing water at least weekly to prevent mosquitoes from developing. https://localnewsmatters.org/2021/03/23/springtime-to-help-insects-make-them-welcome-in-your-garden-heres-how/

They found that about 80% of the genes analyzed remained relatively stable for 24 hours -- their expression didn't change much. These included genes often referred to as housekeeping genes that provide basic cellular functions and are commonly used in research studies to show the quality of the tissue. Another group of genes, known to be present in neurons and shown to be intricately involved in human brain activity such as memory, thinking and seizure activity, rapidly degraded in the hours after death. These genes are important to researchers studying disorders like schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, Loeb said.
A third group of genes -- the 'zombie genes' -- increased their activity at the same time the neuronal genes were ramping down. The pattern of post-mortem changes peaked at about 12 hours. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/03/210323131230.htm

B-quarks, a type of subatomic particle, should decay into electrons and their heavier cousins, muons, at the same rate. But the physicists found the transition occurring at different rates – roughly 85 decays into muons for every 100 decays into electrons.
While there is a one in 1,000 chance that the finding is a statistical fluke, it could be a sign of some other subatomic particle at play that is not currently known to physics.
Dr Patel, a reader in particle physics, told i: “That’s a small enough number to get us usually hyper-sceptical physicists at least cautiously excited. https://inews.co.uk/news/science/cern-scientists-find-evidence-that-could-give-birth-to-a-new-physics-and-help-solve-mysteries-of-the-universe-926361?ITO=newsnow
Our paper posits that organizations may hire some managers who have dark personality traits because their willingness to push ethical boundaries aligns with organizational objectives, particularly in the accounting context where ethical considerations are especially important. Using several validation studies and experiments, we find that experienced executives and recruiting professionals favor hiring a candidate with dark personality traits into an accounting management position over an otherwise better-qualified candidate when the hiring organization faces pressure to manage earnings. Our results help to illuminate why individuals with dark personality traits may effectively compete for high-level accounting positions. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10551-021-04761-z

Psycholinguistic research shows that filled pauses are surprisingly beneficial from a listener’s perspective, even though speakers often try to avoid them. When information is preceded by a filled pause, studies suggest that listeners have better memory and recall of that information3,4. Put another way, hesitation tells listeners to pay attention to what is coming.
But using too many filled pauses can also lead to the perception that a speaker lacks authority and credibility. So, although being prepared and familiar with what you are planning to say will minimize your ums and uhs, don’t worry too much if a few get by — they might actually help your audience to remember what you said.
Be intense
Communicating enthusiasm and excitement helps to keep people engaged, thereby avoiding the dreaded video-conference fatigue or, worse, a glazed-over audience. Aside from varying your pitch, you can also make savvy use of words known as intensifiers — ‘very,’ ‘really,’ ‘incredibly,’ ‘so’ and ‘absolutely’, for example. Intensifiers communicate intensity: why just describe something as ‘important’ when it could be ‘tremendously important’? https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00746-0

The class of marine animals known as cephalopoda – which today includes squids, octopuses, and cuttlefishes – could have been around on Earth 30 million years earlier than previously thought, according to new research.
What's more, if we do need to reset the timings on the appearance of cephalopods, then the whole evolutionary history of invertebrate organisms might need re-examining, given the importance of these creatures in the overall picture of life on the planet.
Key to the new research is the discovery of several 522 million-year-old cone-shaped fossils on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland, Canada, featuring certain tell-tale features that mean they could arguably be classed as cephalopods. https://www.sciencealert.com/cephalopods-may-be-30-million-years-older-than-previously-thought
WASHINGTON - A food preservative used to prolong the shelf life of Pop-Tarts, Rice Krispies Treats, Cheez-Its and almost 1,250 other popular processed foods may harm the immune system, according to a new peer-reviewed study by Environmental Working Group.
For the study, published this week in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, EWG researchers used data from the Environmental Protection Agency's Toxicity Forecaster, or ToxCast, to assess the health hazards of the most common chemicals added to food, as well as the "forever chemicals" known as PFAS, which can migrate to food from packaging.
EWG's analysis of ToxCast data showed that the preservative tert-butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, has been found to harm the immune system both in both animal tests and in non-animal tests known as high-throughput in vitro toxicology testing. This finding is of particular concern during the coronavirus pandemic. https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2021-03/ewg-pui032321.php

A new study has found that most Australian dingoes have pure dingo ancestry, certifying their importance as native apex predators rather than pests.
The research, published in the journal Australian Mammalogy, found virtually no feral dogs across the continent as commonly thought and very little evidence of interbreeding between dingoes (Canis lupus dingo) and domestic dogs (Canis familiaris).
“The results challenge the widespread use of the term ‘wild dog’,” says lead author Kylie Cairns from the University of New South Wales.

This challenges the common wisdom that DNA damage is inherently a process to be prevented. Instead, at least in neurons, it is part of the normal process of switching genes on and off. Expectant women who consumed the caffeine equivalent of as little as half a cup of coffee a day on average had slightly smaller babies than pregnant women who did not consume caffeinated beverages, they found.
Smaller birth size can place infants at higher risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes later in life.
The experts advise pregnant women to steer clear completely from caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and fizzy energy drinks like Red Bull. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-9401895/Pregnant-women-moderate-caffeine-intake-risk-having-small-baby-study-finds.html
Rudolf said the same evolutionary principal might also be applied to the study of human behavior.
"In societies or cultures that live in big family groups among close relatives, for example, you might expect to see less selfish behavior, on average, than in societies or cultures where people are more isolated from their families and more likely to be surrounded by strangers because they have to move often for jobs or other reasons," he said. https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2021-03/ru-dse032521.php

In 2007, Parker and his colleagues found the appendix may serve as a reservoir of useful gut bacteria, the kind that help the body to digest food, they reported in the Journal of Theoretical Biology. When diseases flush both good and bad microbes from the gut, good bacteria can emerge from the safe harbor of the appendix to help restore the gut to a healthy state. https://www.livescience.com/what-if-no-appendix.html

Bacteria collected from more than a mile below the surface of the Pacific Ocean may have just blown one of immunology's longest-held assumptions clean out of the water.
The bacteria are so alien to humans that our immune cells do not even register that they exist, making them completely invisible to our immune systems.
This totally contradicts one of the classic tenets of immunology – that the human immune system evolved to be able to sense every single microbe so it could catch the infectious ones. https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-discover-deep-sea-microbes-that-are-invisible-to-our-immune-system
For the first time, scientists have observed – and filmed! – the first milliseconds of gold crystal formation and found that it's much more complicated than previous research suggested. Rather than a single, irreversible transition, the atoms come together and fall apart multiple times before stabilizing into a crystal.
This discovery has implications for both materials science and manufacturing, as it bolsters our understanding of how materials come together out of a messy pile of atoms. https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-thrilled-to-observe-the-first-milliseconds-of-gold-crystal-formation
Every year, an estimated four percent of the world's vegetated land surface burns, leaving more than 250 megatons of carbonized plants behind. For the first time, a study by the University of Vienna has now recorded elevated concentrations of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFR) in these charcoals - in some cases even up to five years after the fire. These EPFR may generate reactive substances, which in turn harm plants and living organisms. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20210326/Environmentally-persistent-free-radicals-found-in-wildfire-charcoals-remain-stable-for-years.aspx

Why It Matters: Tesla has said its factories should remain union-free and opposed efforts by workers to unionize. Musk has repeatedly clashed with workers at the Fremont factory for their pro-union stance and over working conditions at the factory.
Musk being ordered to delete his tweet is also significant, as Tesla counts tweets by its CEO to be official communication from the company.

The team found that small farms have higher yields than large ones do, perhaps owing to the increased availability of family labour. Smaller farms also tend to have more crop diversity, as well as higher non-crop biodiversity. That’s probably because, compared with industrial farms, modest farms rely less on insecticides, cover more-diverse landscapes and have more field edges between crops and non-cultivated land.
The authors suggest that supporting small farms boosts food production while providing important humanitarian and ecological benefits.

Ever thought about buying or building a bat box to help bats? Think carefully about the design and where you put it, University of Illinois researchers say.
Here's why: Bats and their pups can overheat and die in poorly designed or placed bat boxes, and in a warming climate, it could happen more often.
Illinois bat ecologists Joy O'Keefe and Reed Crawford recently synthesized the available data on bat boxes, also known as bat houses or artificial roosts, to raise awareness of the issue and motivate change in bat box design, marketing, and consumer education. Their recommendations are published in Conservation Science and Practice. https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2021-03/uoic-lbt032921.php

The team studied fruit flies and cutting-edge brain cell models called organoids. They focused on the signals muscles send when stressed. The researchers found that stress signals rely on an enzyme called Amyrel amylase and its product, the disaccharide maltose.
The scientists showed that mimicking the stress signals can protect the brain and retina from aging. The signals work by preventing the buildup of misfolded protein aggregates. Findings suggest that tailoring this signaling may potentially help combat neurodegenerative conditions like age-related dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
"We found that a stress response induced in muscle could impact not only the muscle but also promote protein quality control in distant tissues like the brain and retina," said Fabio Demontis, PhD, of St. Jude Developmental Neurobiology. "This stress response was actually protecting those tissues during aging." https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/03/210326152359.htm
New bacterial strains were identified from different locations on the International Space Station during flights.
Scientists found the presence of genes involved in promoting plant growth in genome analysis of the new strains as part of the research, published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology.
The findings may help in creating “fuel” which could support plants in withstanding stressful environments such as space, according to the University of Hyderabad, whose scientists worked with researchers in the US - including from Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory - for the study. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/bacteria-space-plant-growth-nasa-b1823409.html
The news is out of this world: NASA’s TESS space telescope has captured evidence of more than 2,200 candidate planets orbiting bright, nearby stars, including hundreds of “smaller” planets – many possibly rocky worlds in some ways similar to Earth.
As scientists seek to confirm the discoveries, TESS’s large haul promises a possible explosion in the number of known exoplanets – planets orbiting other stars. Perhaps even better: The relative brightness of the stars they orbit should allow TESS’s successor telescopes to probe some of these planets’ atmospheres to search for water, oxygen, and other molecules that might make them hospitable to life.
The bonanza of exoplanet candidates is detailed in a newly published paper that catalogs the two-year prime mission for TESS (the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite), that has produced a steady stream of exoplanet discoveries since its launch in 2018. http://www.parabolicarc.com/2021/03/27/space-telescope-delivers-the-goods-2200-possible-planets/
The Nernst response occurs when a material converts a flow of heat into an electric voltage. This thermoelectric phenomenon can be exploited in devices that generate electricity from a heat source. The most notable current example is the radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) that were developed in part at Los Alamos. RTGs use heat from the natural radioactive decay of plutonium-238 to generate electricity—one such RTG is currently powering the Perseverance rover on Mars.
"What's exciting is that this colossal anomalous Nernst effect appears to be due to the rich topology of the material. This topology is created by a large spin-orbit coupling, which is common in actinides," Ronning said. "One consequence of topology in metals is the generation of a transverse velocity, which can give rise to a Nernst response as we observe. It can also generate other effects such as novel surface states that may be useful in various quantum information technologies." https://phys.org/news/2021-03-uranium-compound-anomalous-nernst.html
Stripped of all but its veiny skeleton, the circulatory network of a spinach leaf successfully served as an edible substrate upon which the researchers grew bovine animal protein, said Boston College Professor of Engineering Glenn Gaudette, the lead author of the new study. Drinking beetroot juice promotes a mix of mouth bacteria associated with healthier blood vessels and brain function, according to a new study of people aged 70-80.
Beetroot - and other foods including lettuce, spinach and celery - are rich in inorganic nitrate, and many oral bacteria play a role in turning nitrate to nitric oxide, which helps to regulate blood vessels and neurotransmission (chemical messages in the brain).
Older people tend to have lower nitric oxide production, and this is associated with poorer vascular (blood vessel) and cognitive (brain) health. https://www.newswise.com/articles/changes-in-mouth-bacteria-after-drinking-beetroot-juice-may-promote-healthy-ageing

2022.10.16 18:15 NihongoNerd About to go homeless HandBook

Someone asked this question and it's a common question. So i made this for them and you. I highly recommend getting even a super small car and even higher highly recommend getting a job if your going to go homeless. If you can't for whatever reason I give ways to make money and address to get a job. Even if your already homeless. Please read the full thing and comment tips if you have any.
Do you have a car? Do you have a job?
If the answer is yes to both of these do this immediately.
  1. Figure out how big your car ACTUALLY is (you will find out when your sleeping in it) and put the back seats down to make a larger flat surface. I recommend taking your coach cushions and using them as your new back seat bed.
  2. Go to your kitchen and throw anyway ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that is glass. Plastic is your new best friend. You only need one or two Plaits bowls, a pot, maybe a skillet if you have a big car, and get a plastic 5 gallon water jug and a plastic 1 gallon water jug, go to Walmart and get a camping stove or a Asian stove wooden chopsticks (costs like 2$ where i am), bring with you two wash clothes, two towels, duck tap, Paracord, 1 or 2 eating wears if your not good with chop sticks, soap and other cleaning stuff, BUY BANDAIDS!, And maybe a cooler depending on your location. And of course a blanket.
If I remember anything else I'll update it
  1. Push your passenger seat as far up as you can and put all your stuff on the BOTTOM of your seats and cover it up with your bedding then put your blanket/blankets over your bedding. This is important because NO ONE likes the homeless population.
  2. Going back to that last comment make sure you NEVER look homeless. People are more likely to help you if your homeless but don't look it. Idk why but it's just the truth.
  3. Spend the day driving around town and finding places to sleep where no one wills notice you. Go to places you never thought of going it's fine.
  4. Become a morning person. Most places won't care/notice you so long as you leave around 5/6 am.
  5. Become a regular at a coffee shop early morning to charge your things. If you go regular and become friends with the employees they will be more understanding to your situation. But don't tell them your life story first time you meet them. If you do it's the same as picking out a wedding cake on the first date
  6. Get a job and fucking keep it if you don't have it.
  7. Start donating plasma (if you can) once every 4 days. They will tell you 3 but you will get sick. This helps with gas because you will be moving around a lot more than normal.
  8. I might have said get 1 pot but you might want two. If you can't get a gym membership to shower us the stove to heat water and clean yourself.
  9. If you can (and you should if your donating plasma) get a storage unit to put your stuff in AT FIRST! This gives you time to get used to being homeless
  10. Avoid other homeless people don't be a asshole because they can help you out, but don't stick around them. I fucking love the homeless because they taught me how to live but if you hang out with them to much they will fuck up your mind and keep you homeless
  11. Start paying off all your debt. Your living on your car now there's no fucking reason to pay that off unless it's over 10k. Ik that's harsh but to bad
  12. Start going to donation places to get free food and clothes. Make sure the clothes don't make you look homeless. That's very important
  13. Start cooking your food immediately. You can keep food not refrigerated for about a day. Don't push your luck. I'm not joking. If you get sick your fucked
  14. Buy dry food like ramen and learn to love packaged tuna. My favorite snake today is tuna on Ritz crackers
  15. Swallow your fucking shame and start going to KFC ever now and then and ask if you can get free chicken. They will more likely give you some if you come in 5 mins to close. Most fast food places will.
  16. Don't cool In public places again keep your homelessness a secret
  17. After you been homeless for a while figure out if you want to stay that way or not. If you do get a bigger car.
  18. If your city is to hard to be homeless in move. Don't let imaginar conditions hold you back. This isn't meant to be a promot but i have a YouTube channel actually watch it i make videos about getting free housing and work at resorts and seafood processing. It's very easy to get s job doing those, even ex cons can get it.
  19. Get out of being homeless either by traveling or whatever. But you can't do it forever unless you have a plane.
  20. If you don't have a car you can all this just replace the car with a backpack and the 5 gallon water Jung with 2 1 gallons.
  21. If your getting a storage unit I recommend putting your clothes in that and going back ever 2 days to chance clothes
  22. If you don't have a job get one. A address is normally the barrier to entry. What you can do is use your local post office for your mailing address address but you must check it for mail weekly because if you don't they will throw it away. This is federal so if your in the United States it's very helpful information

2022.05.17 20:05 Crazy_Cooter0727 Received my 12v fridge today

ICECO 64QT Dual zone with cover.
Getting closer and closer to my travel journey.
Have some major repairs that must be done on my car before I leave - trans clutch for sure - A/C is more of a want than a need but still a costly repair.
Looking at tents and a cot...any suggestions?
I was thinking about the Magellan Outdoors Pro Swiftrise 4 person hub tent. I like the "Cabin style" simply because I am a tall guy with a dog. I have a tiny car so space is a commodity when packing.
