2023.03.31 04:55 pahlou Categorizing the standards for each BMET position.

Hey I am currently an intern for crothall healthcare doing biomedical engineering technician work on a various amount of equipment with an inventory sitting at 3000+ device for me and my boss (unit director) to solely maintain as we are the only 2 employees in the bio med department. By the time I graduate I will have acquired and associates in engineering technology, a certification as an advanced manufacturing technician, and 2 year of apprentice experience whilst shadowing a director. Where would I fall in terms of BMET 1- BMET 3? Would I be able to be a traveling biomed straight out of school if not how long until it would be feasible? And lastly what kind of salary would you be demanding if receiving everything I am getting out of school/work program

2023.03.30 20:26 SomethingAgainstD0gs Is it worth it to get the CCNA certificate before starting.

I am a freshly Comptia A+ certified IT professional actively working as an IT technician. I've just started my Network+ certificate studying with the end goal of transfering both into WGU to eliminate the amount of classes that stand between me and achieving my goal of becoming a software engineer.

I am also thinking of getting my CCNA certification before starting classes so that I am able to have a sizeable salary while I am completing the degree. The only problem is that I don't want to waste time getting the CCNA if I will not be able to transfer it in along side my other 2 certificate in exchange for credits.

So my question is:
Does anyone have experience transfering the CCNA in for credits toward the computer science degree? And what classes does it remove that the A+ and Network+ will not have already removed?

2023.03.30 08:20 CoffeeTimeReview Switches career from AEC industry to Retail.

Hi all I'm struggling with a decision. Since I got my bachelors in 2018 I began work in the Architecture/ Engineering industy. I worked at a small 30 person firm for 5 years and ended as a Marketing Coordinator. I then moved to a larger, nationwide firm of over 2000+ employees. I've worked here for a year as a Pursuit Coordinator pushing Word proposals out all day to win work. I excell at this job as it is quite easy and almost mindless at times. I am currently making about $52,000/year on an hourly wage.
As a result of not feeling challenged enough in my current role I began the interview process. I'm currently on a cusp of accepting an offer for a major retail foodchain/gas station company. This is a Coordinator position, specificaly focused on growing their loyalty program/app. I would work more with what inspired me to go into marketing, turning data driven analysis into actionable insights. I love marketing research and analytics and I remember falling in love with retail and the everyday consumer during my time in college and while growing up as I was always generally curious about what drives people to buy the things they buy.
However, there is a certain respect to working in the engineering industy as a marketer. Although, I truly don't believe I fit in with these groups of professionals and have always felt like an outsider. In terms of business I never really felt compelled to learn the insights of how b2b customers work. However the stability knowing that there is always an enginerring firm out there that could use marketing or pursuit coordinator experience is comforting.
Frankly, I'm just a guy who loves video games, memes, and pop culture. My free time is spent watching video game youtubers/streamers, reading manga, watching anime, etc.. My true desire is to work in the entertainment industry one day, that seems the most fun industry to market. But unfortunetly I do not live in an area where that is generally avaialble. I thrive working in a less-serious atmosphere and feel I could truly be more happy working with a product that effects the everyday consumer, because I can relate more to the everyday consumer. I love animals as well and may want to start my own business one day relating to animals. My wife is a vetrinary technician and this is a passion we both share.
Currently at work I feel I can't be myself and have no motovation for studying marketing just to become a senior pursuit coordinator one day. And I get very bored reseaching engineering related trends.
In this new role, I would work under the Director of Advertising, get paid $5,000 more per year (plus $3,000 bonus potential), salaried. I would be giving up my two day/week working from home as this new job would be everyday in the office. This is the biggest thing I would give up thay is truly stopping me from hitting the GO button. Although, whenever I do work at home I feel very districated and push off work just to have to make it up later. I love being home, I just feel a general unease everytime I do stay home for work.
TL;DR. It's 2am. I have work in the morning. I have a typed up resignation but hesitant to turn it in. Do I hang up my time in the AEC/Engineering industry to pursue the type of customer base in which I truly feel compelled to understand (retail)? Am I going up a good thing for something potentially worse? Is it worth the risk for a greater education and career trajectory?
Let me know what you think! I appreciate it.

2023.03.30 02:46 dabiggman Quit a Job after Boss Questioned me for taking my wife to the hospital to deliver our Daughter

The shortest job I've ever had lasted two days. I was interviewing for a role with a company when my wife was 9 months pregnant. I had made sure to mention multiple times to the hiring manager (future boss) that I will be taking one - two weeks off to care for her and our newborn. After the interview, I received a call he wanted to meet to discuss salary for the role. At the time, I was working as an on-call maintenance technician and he told me I had to come right away. I was pretty greasy, but whatever, I had a job that was okay with me leaving for a brief period so I went to his office.
When I arrived, he kind of scoffed and told me this was my "surprise second interview" and he did them like this to catch people off guard and then motioned to my appearance. I mentioned he never said anything of the sort in the phone call and it was unprofessional to do such a thing. However, as I was desperate for the money, I obliged. He told me he didn't believe I had the skills for the job I was interviewing for and questioned my integrity. I disagreed with him and three days later, got the job.
I started on a Monday as a Desktop Administrator. The day started with the Boss showing me the facility and telling everyone that I was "the new Jeremy." He pointed to a suite of closed, solid wood offices and said "that's the CEO and CFO." Then he brought me back to his office where he again questioned my abilities before sending me off to my cube across from the Systems Administrator.
Immediately the SysAdmin and Help Desk Admin told me of how awful the boss was, how the entire IT team had been recycled twice in six months and both were going to be quitting soon. The SysAdmin asked what tasks the Boss had assigned me - I showed him a push cart full of broken laptops (and I mean smashed to fucking pieces) that the Boss wanted me to fix up and put back into circulation, including ones that would cause electric shock. The SysAdmin, technically being my superior, told me instead to begin familiarzing myself with my duties and reading schematics on company infrastructure. The boss must have seen us talking and summoned me to his office. On Day One, he berated and screamed at me that "THE SYSADMIN ISNT YOUR BOSS, I'M YOUR BOSS, UNDERSTAND!" I nodded in quiet agreement. He then told me he wanted me to install some Spy Software on the SysAdmin's PC and the Help Desk Admin's PC because he believed they were "slacking off."
I threw that USB in the trash.
Day 2 was more of the same, but on the night of Day 2, my wife went into labor at 10pm. I called my boss' phone and left a voicemail and also left an email at 1 or 2am stating I would not be in for two weeks because my wife was in labor.
At 8:01am I received a phone call from my boss. As my daughter had been born at 3:15am, I was groggy but answered out of habit. "Where are you?" The voice on the other end asked. "I'm in the Hospital." "I need you to come in, NOW" said the voice. I told my wife I would be right back as the Office and Hospital were only a three minute drive from one another.
I walk into my bosses office and he is PISSED. He berates me at the top of his voice, insults me for the wearing casual clothing (t-shirt and shorts), and tells me I am late. I - being quite tired - respond with "We discussed this multiple times - my wife was pregnant and I would be taking time off when she gives birth."
He responds with, and I will never forget: You weren't the one in labor, why do you need to miss work?
I stood up, gave him the double deuce (two middle fingers), told him to go fuck himself, and walked out.

That is my anti-work story. This was nearly ten years ago, and this guy is STILL the IT Director for that company. Everyone else quit within two months.
Edit: Thanks to everyone showing their support AND sharing their own horror stories. It's good for workers to unite in a common goal of improving working conditions and trying to get people like this removed from their positions.
2nd Edit: For everyone asking, I can't give the name of the company, they are just pioneers of their craft and their craft is metal finishing. Also, this former boss was promoted in January of this year to Vice President of IT. Just goes to show that most executives don't care how horrible someone is as long as they make them money.

2023.03.29 23:43 AnyBookkeeper6093 Received a job offer but the process was weird.

I’m an engineer working in the battery industry and have recently started looking into other jobs. One of the companies in my area has a very persistent HR who pretty much hounded everyone at my current job lol.
This HR guy basically emailed me about an engineer position. And set me up for an interview with the small team of 4. He did not elaborate what the position was for specifically when I asked. It was a group of data scientists with no experimental background looking for someone to turn experiments for their model. They asked me very basic questions- not very technical at all. It felt like an introductory interview.
The next day the HR tells me to contact their VP of recruiting and once again does not explain why. He pretty much hounded me for 1 day to do it which I did and the VP responded asking when I was available for a call.
The HR Hounded me AGAIN within hours because I had not responded immediately and then mentioned that it was to discuss salary and benefits and a possible offer.
Am I wrong in thinking this is weird? Based on the interview it felt like a glorified technician position and the fact they didn’t do a technical interview makes me very suspicious that it’s just going to be a shitty job or work environment.
Thoughts and advice appreciated!
Edit: Another thing I found strange was that there was no job posting for this position on their website.

2023.03.29 06:15 throwawayanon152767 M.S. with no relevant work experience? (STEM)

I received an offer from my undergraduate university to pursue a M.S. in chemistry on an assistantship which covers tuition and a stipend that’s enough to scrape by with no debt, but also no savings. It’s a very low ranked school in chemistry, ranked between 170-180 by USNWR.
My primary concern is that I have zero industrial experience. Not even an internship. I spent my summers doing research instead.
I looked up chemist/scientist jobs that prefer a M.S. holding applicant. 99% of the time, preference for M.S. applicants comes with x years of industrial experience as a co-requisite. And oftentimes, the same listings will accept applicants with a B.S. only, if a greater amount of industrial experience is shown.
ACS cites that M.S. holders consistently report higher incomes, but their data lacks the variable of industrial experience. I wish there was data on the incomes of B.S. vs M.S. vs Ph.D. holders with the same (say, 10-20 years) amount of industrial experience.
This makes me contemplate whether I should forfeit the M.S. offer if I receive an offer as a lab technician. I’m grateful for the offer- don’t get me wrong- but even the low salary as a lab tech would be easier to live off than the stipend of my M.S. assistantship offer, which is between a third to a half of what Ph.D. stipends would be where I live.
Is a getting a M.S. even marginally more advantageous than say, two years of entry-level industrial experience?

2023.03.29 05:41 ImHerzen11 Why do I find most of the jobs where I worked boring? And why is it that money is not the main factor for me to stay at a job?If I don't like the job,I will leave even if the salary is high.I have an opportunity to complete training and then get a job as train driver, wondering if it'll be boring job

I'm 26. I used to do many jobs, most of which I hated and felt really bad at my workplace. I used to work on a construction site, at a car wash, as a waiter, welder, etc. I found all these jobs very boring.
3 years ago, I started working as a helpdesk IT technician. I still work at this job. I fix computer system issues remotely through my laptop, and I work from home. This job is the first job that I worked and that I don't find boring. It's fun, and I enjoy talking to people in a foreign language because our customers are foreigners. I enjoy working on IT issues, working in different programs, having different browsers open, etc. There's lots of multitasking too. I guess I like that the job is dynamic and that I get to do many different tasks during my 8-hour shift as opposed to the jobs that I used to work before where I would get to perform only a couple of repetitive boring tasks.
At my previous jobs, I kind of felt I didn't like being stuck at one place for too long. For example, working as a welder in a hall for 8 hours felt depressing and too static. Now that I work from home I'm still static but for some reason, I don't have that feeling that I'm at a place where I don't wanna be for 8 hours, and it doesn't feel static, I guess I don't feel static because I get immersed into the job because it's fun so I don't mind that I'm at one place all the time (in my room).
Now I have an opportunity to complete training and then work as a train driver in Germany, where I would get to live in a better country and where I would get a better salary than the one that I have now. How do I tell if I'm gonna like that job or not before I actually start doing it? Any advice?

2023.03.29 04:26 1keric Is CAD a good career choice?

I've been looking at learning AutoCAD and Revit specifically to make house plans or plumbing plans for pools etc. I've heard that CAD operators are at the lower level of the ladder meaning they earn the least amount of salary. I live in Miami for some context so there is definitely demand for this career choice. I just want to know if learning Revit and Autocad is worth it so that I can be a Revit technician or AutoCAD operator.

2023.03.28 22:05 Anna_Nemus How are the salaries in Biotech?

Hi all,

How is the current situation of salaries in Oxford? I might have a job proposal coming up at a Biotech company and I want to make sure I aim for the right salary. I have a PhD plus 2.5 years of experience, 2 of which in a related position. The job ad listed PhD plus such experience and other skills that I have, so it is a very good match.
The position requires knowledge from labwork to bioinformatics and soft/communication skills (no management responsibilities). It is usually a salary above a lab technician but below of bioinformaticians, product managers, and maybe sales.

Any clue in the right direction is appreciated!

Anyone on here make a career change from phlebotomy to dental hygiene? I’ve been a phlebotomist for almost 8 years now and it’s just not enough anymore for me in terms of salary. I live paycheck to paycheck and we’re hopefully gonna have kids in the future. Just wondering if anyone made a similar switch? A few people mentioned a con of the job being super repetitive but I feel like I’m already in the same boat doing phlebotomy all day everyday. Also do you think it would be possible to do this and still work or would I have to be completely out of work for classes , clinical, and homework/studying? TIA!!
